LA Angels Wednesday News Crash: Final Stretch

Morning Angels fans. Have some links

Angels News

The Angels lost to the 120 loss White Sox Team. Somehow. Well, a Lopez somehow.

Next loss will be the Angels’ 95th. Which would tie the most any Angel team ever lost with the 1980 team. It will also guarantee an Angels last place finish for the first time since 1999.

And nothing will change as long as Arte Moreno owns the team. Yeesh.

Consider this:

Trout has not played 120+ games in 5 years

10 years since the Angels made the playoffs

15 since the Angels won a postseason game

High school freshmen have only lived in a world where the Angels have been one of the worst teams in baseball.

Around Baseball

Padres clinch a playoff spot. Which spot, undecided as of now, but prolly WC1.

O’s clinch a playoff spot as well. 99% it is WC1 in the AL.

Houston has won the AL West. Again. For the 7th time in the last 8 seasons.

A’s are playing their final games in Oakland forever. It is sad.

How much has pitching changed in 34 years? Fastball velo was averaging in the 80’s.

Schwarber continues to be the weirdest leadoff hitter ever. But hey, as long as it works.

The White Sox need to win just 2 more games to not have the worst winning percentage of any modern MLB team. And the Angels made that possible for them.

Anything I missed? Post below for upvotes.

Fifteen years of waiting for this team to turn it around feels a lot like all the time I spent hoping my ex-wife would change. But here I am, still hanging on, and still misspelling “perennial.” Honestly, I’ve tried to get into other teams, but this site keeps pulling me back every day. I even searched for other blogs (is this technically a blog?), but I couldn’t find anything that matched what Joiner writes here.
I had high hopes that the rule changes implemented last year would shift the game closer to an era when speed was more valued. While I appreciate the faster pace of play, I can’t say I’m seeing the resurgence of Ozzie Smith-style players or guys hitting for average. Sure, I hear more about steals and speed, but I’m just not seeing it as much as I’d like while watching games. Still, I’m cautiously optimistic that teams will eventually figure out how to fully exploit these new rules, and we’ll enter a new era of baseball that’s not just home runs and strikeouts. But right now, it feels like we’re still waiting.
Also, I’m not sure what I was supposed to take away from looking at Schwarber’s stats, aside from the fact he looks way more like a cleanup hitter than a leadoff guy. That’s not too strange in today’s game, but I’m no expert compared to some of you here.
As for A’s fans, I really feel for them. The owner should’ve made it work in Oakland. I typically lean fiscally conservative and believe an owner should do what he wants with his property, but in this case, I’m siding with the fans—he should have found a way to stay.

The doyers received a full generation of fans because of their success and the lack of angels success. That’s less merch sold, tickets bought, and less eyes they will have for as long as this team exists.

The white sox actually need to win 4 to avoid a worse percentage than the 62 Mets. Two more wins would make them 39-123 while the Mets were 40-120.

Tonight it’s Suarez but I think we’ll outscore them…. I hope so, anyway

That’s a lot of faith in Suarez. The dam is going to break at some point and the runs will flow with him on the mound.

Watched SportsCenter last night and the Angels were treated as the punchline we really are, down to being called Anaheim for most of the lowlights.

You think nobody can screw up a 2 out in the 8th inning lead against the worst club in modern baseball, but the Angels proved that one team can.

MLB must have a built-in cushion for franchises that are run poorly. In other words, as long as there are no more than X number of shitty organizations, the whole of MLB is good. The White Sox and Angels clearly have two terrible long-time owners but it seems like MLB is okay with it. I realize it’s all about money, but damn, these franchises are BAD from top to bottom.

He has, but this year is off the charts. He would at least call the balls and strikes based on the steikezone. Now, if a Halo pitcher is within a few inches of the strikezone, he says it’s a strike.

I just want consistency. Otherwise, he sounds like a fool.

I think that was the worst game of the year against a team with 120 losses that hasn’t come from behind after the sixth inning all year. Fuck Jack Lopez forever! Take your hair and go away! I love how Wash keeps schooling the guys in defensive infield fundamentals. That said, it wasted a beautiful performance by Jack.

Schwarber has a .368 OBA which is way better than anyone on our team so hitting leadoff is certainly justifiable. What amazes me is that he has 100 RBIs from that spot. He has driven himself in 37 times which helps.

Here’s a story in the stay classy or stay home category:

The Pittsburgh Pirates cut first baseman Rowdy Tellez with six games left in the MLB regular season. Normally, this move wouldn’t mean much. However, Tellez was just four plate appearances shy of a massive $200,000 bonus, and fans are clamoring for Tellez to get his due.”

Nutting being Nutting.

He’s a short sighted as Arte. Sad thing is the Pirates have enough of a pitching pipeline they could be good fairly soon but with Nutting not paying for good free agents and now stiffing the mid level ones who do sign there, free agency will be tough for them.

Nutting is nuts because his team may cost him money from the pool, he draws from being a small market team and he will not receive as much this year. There are at least five teams that have for shit owners. A’s, Angels, Pirates, White Sox, Marlins. They take turns being at the top of the list each day. Must be hard working for these folks knowing that each day may be your last.

Silent C (Kochanowicz) is a beast.

Should be solidly in the 2025 rotation.

Is he? Should he? Or did he just pitch against the worst team in baseball errr major league history.

He is 2-5 with a 4+ ERA. Digging deeper he only averages 3 strikes outs per 9 inning. His WHIP is a very mediocre 1.217 which is essentially the same that he had at Rocket City where he went 5-8 with a 4.50 ERA over 102 innings. He is averaging giving up 9+ hits and 1 HR per game this year in both AA and the majors (he did not pitch in AAA).

Those statistics scream MEDIOCRE. One good performance does not change that. Not sure why you would anoint starting rotation status for ‘25 on the kid. He should be in the minors learning his craft.

I know I’m the optimist on a site full of reasonable negativity, but there’s no need to be extra hyperbolic this morning.

Lets address these comments of yours:
“Or did he just pitch against the worst team in baseball errr major league history”
“One good performance does not change that”

hmmm… because after yesterday’s gem
his ERA has dropped to 2.64 over his last 51.1 IP since his return to the majors.

“Jack Kochanowicz with seven scoreless tonight, that makes seven of eighth outings going for six-or-more innings with three-or-fewer runs permitted”

https://x.com/TaylorBlakeWard/status/1838768137573212259?t=CKPNQdyEwKjde6Q66k5XCA&s=19

Anything to fit a narrative, right? You really said you dug deeper while completely omitting his MLB success 😂. Arighty

again – these young kids have streaks in whoh they are good. Batters too. But over 162 games it is consistency that matters. Vitamin K has not showed that….yet.

I’m just saying to anoint him as a ‘25 starter requires a brand of optimism that I cannot muster.

Chock it up to realism versus pessimism.

His ERA+ is 3rd best on the team after the two I mentioned above. His FIP is also behind Detmers in addition to the other two, and his WHIP is second only to Soriano. The numbers suggest, at least for this year, he has been our 3rd best starting pitcher. Future predictions are obviously completely subjective and anyone’s guess.

You’re not being a realist. You’re being a contrarian twit. A sub 3 ERA over eight starts is clearly better than mediocre and is a large enough sample size to suggest future success… maybe not a sub-3 ERA over his entire career, but likely a rotation piece. And while his sinker doesn’t get a ton of strikeouts, it’s proven great at inducing weak contact, which is also fun.

Ok, so long time lurker and just joined today. Well I’d say it is more than 1 good start. In his last 5 starts alone (2 CHI, 1 TEX, 1 MIN, 1 DET) he is 1-2, 2.27 ERA and a 0.95 WHIP. I’d say 2 BB in 31.2 innings is actually quite good. 4 quality starts with the fifth falling just short at 5.2 innings. He also has 16 strikeouts in those 31.2 innings. Who cares about strikeouts, an out is an out, I actually find it quite refreshing to see someone pitch and not just throw as fast as possible.

Welcome. He shows promise. No doubt. But putting him in the ‘25 rotation is a sad commentary on the state of this Org. We all know it takes time for the League to catch up to these young guys – but when they do….. So it’s a huge unknown at best.

Strikeouts are important because they remove the chance for the proverbial ‘ball with eyes’ or an error. That is why strikeouts are so valued.

Thanks, it’s good to be here! I do agree that a spot in the 2025 rotation is not a 100% lock but who would you put in there? The only locks I’d say are Anderson (Obviously $13 mil gives that away), Soriano (as long as he is healthy) and then who else. Everyone here knows that unless hell freezes over, Arte is NOT picking up any major starting pitching free agents. So, with that being said, I’m really bored at work today, so I decided to look up some other starters in the past 25 years that have come up through the minors and what their first 10 starts looked like.

I’m pretty sure we can all agree that WTY, Washburn and Santana were all pretty good for the Angels. I’m not saying that Silent C is going to be the same but there is only one way to find out, let him pitch.

I do like the low amount of BB for Silent C.

I agree, and I would say, out of all of the pitchers that the Angels have brought up the past couple of years, Silent C looks, as of right now, one of the top 3. I’d say Soriano 1 and Silseth, when healthy, 2. I’m still not sure on Detmers, I think he really could turn into something, but he is definitely trending in the wrong direction.

I’m planning on doing an off season write up on him like I did for Adell a couple of weeks ago.

His baseballsavant page pretty much tells us what we already know but there are some interesting wrinkles.

For example, he’s 49th percentile in chase rate but 1st percentile in K rate and whiff %. I love the ground ball and walk rates, but at some point you need to make guys miss a little more often.

Yes. Swing and miss is important because the K eliminates variables like we saw last night.
