Astros Won 9-7

This game was unorthodox by Angels standards because they actually scored a bunch of runs. The dreaded Doug Eddings was the home plate umpire today. Well, if Angels strikeouts counted as highlights I would have a bunch of them for you in the first two innings. Nothing really happened until the bottom of the second inning when the Astros plated a run on a sacrifice fly. 1-0 Astros.

Gustavo Campero got a one out triple in the top of the third inning. Jack Lopez came up and somehow managed to get an RBI base hit. 1-1 tie.

A Taylor Ward ground out advanced Lopez to second. Lopez would have been there earlier on a steal were it not for batter interference by Taylor Ward. Zach Neto flied out to end the top of the third inning.

Kyle Tucker got his second hit and Alex Bregman hit a two run homer. 3-1 Astros. Yainer Diaz singled. Jeremy Pena hit one back to Anderson who royally screwed up. The Astros ended up with men at second and third with one out. It was initially scored a double error on Anderson. That was revised to be one error (on the terrible throw to second) and a fielder’s choice. Jake Meyers homered. 6-1 Astros. The Angels asked for an umpire review but the home run was upheld. Mauricio Dubon singled to chase Tyler Anderson out of the game. Enter Kenny Rosenberg. He got Jose Altuve out to end the third inning.

In the fourth, Kevin Pillar got a one out walk. Pillar stole second with two outs while Eric Wagaman batted. A Wagaman base hit scored Kevin Pillar. 6-2 Astros.

Matt Thaiss lined a single into right field advancing Wagaman to third. Gustavo Campero got hit by a pitch to load the bases for The Mighty Lopez. He grounded to Jeremy Pena who didn’t have a play. Eric Wagaman scored 6-3 Astros.

The bases were still loaded with two outs for Taylor Ward who flied out. Yordan Alvarez walked and Kyle Tucker singled. Alex Bregman then singled scoring Alvarez. 7-3 Astros. Yainer Diaz singled on a liner to center field. It scored Kyle Tucker. 8-3 Astros. Jeremy Pena hit a double play ball but the Angels only got the out at second. This was the first out of the inning. Victor Caratini hit into a double play to end the inning at last.

Zach Neto singled on the ground through to center. Justin Verlander balked to send him to second base. Nolan Schanuel singled to put men at first and third with no outs. Kevin Pillar lined out to third. Nico Kavadas popped out to third. Eric Wagaman doubled to center leaving runners at second and third. Zach Neto scored. 8-4 Astros. Verlander was driven out of the game.

Matt Thaiss got a hit into right center to score a couple more. 8-6 Astros. Gustavo Campero made an out to end the Angels scoring in the fifth.

Roansy Contreras came in to pitch for the Angels. He retired the Astros without further scoring. Taylor Ward got a one out infield single to get the Angels started in the top of the sixth inning. It led to nothing.

Kyle Tucker hit a homer to make it 9-6 Astros. So much for a pitcher’s duel. Let’s go for 20-17 Angels!

Now we come to the Angels seventh. Kevin Pillar homered. 9-7 Astros. Suck it Astros!

Nico Kavadas singled to right. Eric Wagaman singled to left. There were still no outs and men on first and second. Matt Thaiss struck out. Gustavo Campero flied out to left. Brandon Drury came in to pinch hit for Jack Lopez. It’s hard to believe I just typed that. He struck out. That’s more believable.

The Astros went three up three down. The Angels came up in the eighth inning only down by two. Ryan Pressly came in to pitch for the Astros. He retired the Angels in order. Brock Burke came in to pitch for the Angels. He retired the Astros in order.

In the ninth with Josh Hader pitching, Kevin Pillar struck out. So did pinch hitter Logan O’Hoppe. Eric
Wagaman flied out to end the game. Astros won unfortunately.

This is probably sacrilege ‘round here but, I can help but to be impressed by Houston’s ability to be this good for this long. We’re waaaay beyond the cheatstros era.

What a run.

Verlander can eat a bag of D’s though.

Really good balance and Tucker missed a sizeable chunk of time.

Indeed asstros are good…but they’re cheaters forever.

Stro’s are tough. Cheater thing is way overblown, I respect what they’ve done. You get 2-3 cornerstone players with some good arms, winning expectations become the norm. A good GM signs the right players along the way to add to the supporting cast to keep the train moving. A couple of key farm players arrive and bingo. Angels had a good run from 2004 up to 2014 until Arte forced Pujols and Hamilton onto the team.

Cheating can’t be overdone – it either is cheating or it’s not as there is no gray area, imho. There is no question the Astros cheated and that was the hole intent of hiding the fact and why Manfraud says today he regrets giving amnesty to all involved.

The dye is pretty much cast, or if you prefer, the cake is pretty much baked – on this season.

“Zeto” is our best player and there is still room to improve. Potential all-star.

Schanny improved this season. I think he’ll be a 20 HR guy next year but, I’m really hoping he can boost the BA to at least .275….

Soriano was a total revelation. Is he for real?

I’m really hoping that Mickey and especially O’Hoppe finish strong. Logan has had a horrid 2 months at the plate and in danger if finishing below .230

The day after the season ends, Monday September 30th.

I will be commenting on this horrible wasted 2024 season.

Yuts and Joe would say, are the future of the Angels and at this point no one here would disagree. Moving forward we all can also agree that more Yuts filling the ranks from within will be the best thing that can happen along with some other nice moves.

Other nice moves including waving goodbye to Arte and his taillights, rebuilding the minor leagues with Yuts along with better coaches, training and teaching come with that. Signing up to tay in the Big A. This year has been kool watching Neto and O’Hoppe improve, watching the progression of a lot of the Yuts get a taste of the big leagues whether good or bad as that comes with the territory. Rebuilding does not happen fast, but it does have its own rewards of watching as the Yuts improve year after year. Some will bomb out, others traded, and some become everyday players and a very few All-Stars.

Down to the last 10 days or so we can say that having “Hopeium” for the future of the team will be fun to watch and we have a small core to watch and hope to see them better themselves next season along with a new group that will arrive to give us even more of that hopeium.

Sometimes getting it right makes everything look good. I wanted the Angels brass to draft Neto, and I truly believed that he would be gone by the time it announced we were on the board, but it worked out. I had a favorite player on the roster that is now in Philly, and we now have a premium catcher and didn’t feel bad about losing my fav for someone better. Rebuilding is tough, and even tougher with Manfraud’s new drafting rules which were meant to keep things honest and help fans stay engaged with their teams. From the start of approx 2010 or so was saw many teams “tank” and eventually become big winners such as the Royals, Orioles, Braves, Asstros, and Padres and Marlins proving that hard times can and do lean to big successes and rewards for the fans.

We are and have been witnessed to proving that signing “Big Names” in free agency does not equate to long- or short-term success other than at the ticket counters and TV and Radio ratings, but not getting to the Playoffs.

Zach Neto (age 23) in his 1st full MLB season:

150 games
581 PAs
.247 / .317 / .433
109 OPS+
21 💣s
32 doubles
30 stolen bases (78.9%)
4.8 WAR

🧲Neto is the best player on this team 😇

True statement for active players. He’s a really good player but it says a lot about the state of the team.

That we have a lot to hope on for his future and a 2 or3 year hope for a lasting rebuild, then I’ll agree.

We need 3-4 Zach Netos. Maaaaybe Trout has a comeback season in him, that’s just one. I just don’t see it from Schanuel.

Rebuilding takes a few seasons, so we need to see Schanny come through, he wasn’t bad for a rookie even though he wasn’t great. I have hope that he has continued success.

Neto had an 85 OPS+ last year at the same age and then broke out this year. The difference is Neto runs well, hits for power, and is an elite defender at a defensive position. Schanuel is slow, below average defensively, and doesn’t hit for power at a primary offensive position. There were much better choices available when he was drafted. I don’t hold much hope but I am very open to being proven wrong. Even if he doesn’t hit like you would prefer, I believe the Angels will stick with him for years. Today, based on what I see, I am not hopeful or optimistic about their young bats other than Neto and Moore. I am hopeful for Moore. Hopefully there will be some surprises next year. Except for Neto and Moore, we are hoping that all the rest will suddenly begin to perform at a level that they never have previously. That’s a lot of long shots.

can’t wait to see the stats tomorrow. Rendon 0.6 I think. Wags was 0.4 but had 3 hits so he might have closed the gap

Fangraphs has Rendon at -0.1 so Wags is ahead there.

So, sorry I was wrong. The boys did score 7 runs. Problem is the Astros didn’t stop at 7 but proceeded to 9. Credit for coming back and not quitting.

Ugghhh. Eddings and his ever moving, expanding strike zone.
I would have told the first 5 or 6 batters to bunt on Verlander, just to screw with him.
