LA Angels Tuesday News Crash: Detmers Back

Today Reid Detmers is back. Cross your fingers. He will start against the Dodgers. No problem. They are a bunch of scrubs.

Hey! The Pirates just released Jose Rojas. I guess that doesn’t solve anything. The Padres just designated outfielder Jose Azocar for assignment. They have reinstated Fernando Tatis Jr. The Reds designated first baseman Dominic Smith for assignment. Royals first baseman Vinnie Pasquantino is out with a broken thumb.

Gerrit Cole left a start with an apparent calf injury.

Ippei in court for sentencing on October 25th….could get up to 33 years.

Story couldn’t go away fast enough for Shohei, the doyers and MLB.

Free Ippei

Free Shohei for keeping his prison commissary fully funded for however long he stays in the slammer.

Free Ippei’s pitching arm for his baseball prison league and running the most lucrative gambling ring in prison history.

Why the hand-wringing over Arte saying that there’s no plans to “honor” Ohtani this series? It’s not like he’s retiring. Give the adolescent angst a rest.

As it was his choice, Ohtani made a decision to leave. I have no hard feelings. I’m glad he got generational wealth to play a game. I wish him the best when he’s not playing us. He’s having a great season.

This is game 138 for the Angels and nothing more. All the drama and subplots for a guy anyone who follows baseball hears about daily is funny-stupid.

I mean, he did win an MVP in our uniform last year. We probably should do *something*.

Even if it’s just a video tribute and let him tip his cap to the crowd. Though i’m sure he’ll get a standing O that first AB.

I would agree with this assessment Mia.

Think of any other sport … IF an MVP player in the NBA leaves a team and then returns to play them the next season that player will inevitably get a video tribute of some sort, even if just a short one.

And remember folks, Shohei won TWO MVP’s with us, not just one. Very few players win MVP awards and a decidedly smaller number win two or more.

He does deserve some sort of acknowledgement. Not saying we need to bow down and kiss his feet, but acknowledgement for his time here, YES.

Hi, BannedInLA. Long time, no opinion from me. Life happens, and finally, I am in Anaheim for the first time in 20 years! I have never been inside, and tonight will be my very first time. Went to the ticket office and got a ticket, there were many people working to control traffic in the parking lot in very hot weather, so they are expecting a larger crowd than usual. And you and I know the reason. I am thrilled to watch Angels play Dodgers.

Sorry that we could not treat each other in San Diego. Perhaps we can do that next season. I will visit CtPG little more often this month.

I don’t get all the jilted lover stuff as many of us have worked for a crappy companies and then looked for a way out. What If a better company in your space came and offered you a shit ton of money to do the same thing?

Ohtani was a great player for the Angels but the team’s shortcomings and financial considerations led him to consider his options. What the Angels need to ask themselves is why their competitor consistently offers the marketplace a better product.

And let’s face it, there’s no way Arte could or should have offered him $700MM.
And if someone waved that kind of money in my face, of course I’d f***ing take the job.

I don’t blame Shohei, I blame the Doyers (and I hate that stupid deferral thing that let them only take a $400MM luxury tax hit).

$38mm (ish) a year at NPVCV is still a boatload of money. We must admit that it’s a really savvy move with Ohtani’s team to suggesting that option that into existence. He presently makes so much in endorsements already that he doesn’t even know when $14mm+ randomly disappears from his accounts.

‘jilted lover’ – that is a good analogy.

did they leave to find themselves? go back to Asia to discover a deeper meaning of life?
did they go to a simpler life, out of the fanfare? like Toronto?
or did they go to the fancy, rich option just up the street with the bigger house and better looks, seeking glamour and riches?

A lot of things can be true at the same time:

It’s true that Arte and his cronies mismanaged this team so badly pre-Ohtani and Ohtani era and that’s a major reason why this team didn’t win a lot more games than they should have.

It’s also true that the Angels had two of the best players in the world for six years. But to only the true Angels fans, they never really played together at peak. 2018-2020 peak Trout was with so-so and injured Ohtani, and 2021-2023 peak Ohtani was with an injured Trout.

It’s also true that while Ohtani did “give his best” for the last 3 years, the Angels also bent over backwards to accommodate every Ohtani ouchie, awwie, feelings and emotions there were. Never mind that there were screwing every one else’s schedule – if Ohtani feels like he couldn’t pitch tomorrow, someone else will have to. Even if it was ill-advised to go for it last season to the detriment of the team’s present and immediate future, they still accommodated his “desire” to play as if in playoff contention.

It’s also true that Ohtani didn’t wow the league when he first joined. A ROY campaign in 2018 that was cut short by his first TJ, a middling, so-so DH only season in 2019, and a horrible can’t-hit, can’t pitch Ohtani in 2020. Still the Angels stuck with him. It’s not far off to imagine a world where a 2020 can’t-hit, can’t-pitch Ohtani would have been cut by the Dodgers had he been with them since the beginning.

It’s true that the Angels unleashed him to the league by removing all restrictions in 2021. The one good thing Joe Maddon did in his short Angels stay.

It’s true that it also sucks the media and the Dodgers themselves portraying him to be now in his destiny that they’re playing for him, deriding the Angels every chance they get. Never mind that the Angels did all the hard work of figuring out this 2-way thing for the entire league to see and enjoy.

At the end of the day, I still remain an Angels fan, as painful and pathetic it may be. Ohtani going to the Dodgers and not converting me means there’s nothing in the world that can ever make me a Doyer fan. I’m sure that’s perfectly fine for everyone involved. For the first time in years, I can see the seeds of a bright future of the Angels, even if it may take a couple of years to get there – Dana, Soriano, Joyce, Schanuel, Neto, O’Hoppe, maybe even Adell, Moniak and Moore.

And the Dodgers have their $70M DH. I’m sure the louder and farther HRs than those ones that JD Martinez used to also make will be a huge difference maker in the playoffs.

The reason the Angels have not been good for ten years now can be summed up in one word. Injuries.

I follow a lot of teams. I don’t care what sad bitch Angels fan whines about roster depth and GM responsibility and farm systems. None of the teams I pay attention to could have survived having most of their expected top talent injured or hampered by injury more than half of the time.

If the majority of the players Arte pays large sums to were healthy and playing together there would have been seasons where we fell short because of pitching or Houston just being too good, but we’d have looked a lot different since 2014.

And no. Even if any of the sad sacks around here could even define who is a constantly “good” mlb training/med staff for me it wouldn’t have saved us most years. Sure, there are plenty of ways Arte could do a better job of owning the team. I doubt any of them would have made a huge difference in a lot of the past few seasons.

Shitsipper Fan Ju Ju = Injured talent = less talent = losses

I think the warm glow of enthusiastic young players growing together is exactly what this septic situation needs and I would love it if Arte or NewUnicorm never spends on a huge FA again cause I honestly don’t think Angels fans know how to handle it without pissing their pants.

The word I’d choose is development. Almost nothing developed during the past ten years. then injuries come around and there is no depth. A good minor league system can make up for many injuries and there was none. I know the Doyers haven’t had as much bad luck as the Angels but when they do have injuries, they have some depth to make up for it. I think I’ve read that they’ve got a starting rotation that has been decimated this year, but they’re still in first.

Annnnnddd… the Dodgers are one team. The one team everyone always points to. And yet, outside maybe the Orioles (Though if Burnes went down all year I’d say they’re screwed too), just about EVERY play off team would be an also ran if 2/3 of their starting line up got hurt for most of the season.

Yes. If you have the development ability AND massive resources of the Dodgers you can maybe get by with some yet fewer important injuries than the Angels have had most seasons. But if you’re the Brewers? The Cardinals? The Braves? Probably not.

Boos rained down as Shohei Ohtani appeared on the Angel Stadium video board.
In this awful season, the first since Ohtani moved on from his former club, the ballpark is rarely full. The fanbase has tired of elevated hopes turning into debilitating disappointment. Swaths of empty seats are a nightly occurrence.

But that night, opening night, was an exception. The ballpark was filled, sold out, and lively. Before the game started, the Angels renewed their tradition — Calling All Angels by Train played alongside a montage of the team’s history.

When shots of Ohtani, an undeniably massive part of that history, appeared, a cascade of anger spilled out of those present. The Angel-turned-Dodger was given the traitor’s treatment.

Ohtani will return to Angel Stadium on Tuesday night for his first regular season game at the ballpark he called home for six years. And when he does, the Dodgers’ $700 million man should receive a raucous ovation from the fans that once adored him.

Wearing their uniform, Ohtani did things unheard of on a modern baseball field, and in a relatively short time, cemented himself as an all-time Angels great. He was a two-time MVP, two-time Silver Slugger, Rookie of the Year and finished fourth in Cy Young voting.

In his final three seasons, he crushed 124 homers, drove in 290 runs and posted an .964 OPS. In that same span, he recorded a 2.84 ERA over 428 1/3 innings on the mound. His WHIP at just 1.051. His numbers were outrageous, and his presence made every night — and certainly every start — feel more like an event, elevating an otherwise moribund franchise. He should get a hero’s welcome.

“I’m sure they’ll embrace him, he was a big part of this team for a long time,” said Angels catcher Matt Thaiss, who was Ohtani’s teammate for five years. “I think a lot of the fans are grateful to watch him play for a that many years. See him break records, win MVPs.”

“I think the fanbase will be excited to have him back,” said Angels manager Ron Washington. “He’s one of the best players in baseball. For his baseball acumen, I’m more than certain that the fans miss it. And they’re gonna love to see it again.”

Even Dodgers manager Dave Roberts agreed.
“Them not winning there had nothing to do with his performance,” said Dodgers manager Dave Roberts. “… I think the fans will receive him really well with gratitude and appreciation.”

Ohtani did receive a warm ovation from a mix of both fanbases when he returned for an exhibition game in March. But the sentiment toward Ohtani remains mixed, at best.

Fans do have every justifiable reason to be mad that Ohtani is not on their team anymore. They can be steamed that he’s playing for their big brother rivals. Those emotions, however, should not be directed at the player himself.

It was Angels owner Arte Moreno who decided against actively pursuing Ohtani in free agency. His agent, Nez Balelo, said that the Angels had “every opportunity” to make a competitive offer and that “the Angels are special to Shohei.”

In April, Ohtani was asked in Japanese about getting more important and pressure-filled at-bats with the Dodgers than the Angels. He called out the question.
“I love the Angels and I love the fans,” he responded. “I think that would be disrespectful to the Angels.”
Ohtani said he can’t know if he would have accepted a theoretical Angels’ offer.

“It’s hard to tell, obviously the offer did not come to fruition,” he said on Monday. “It’s really a situation where it’s more of an ‘if they did,’ So I can’t really speak on that.”

Still, it is clear he respects his former employer. And it’s completely unfair to blame him for leaving, given that there was no viable financial or competitive reason to return.

The fanbase should applaud Ohtani for even contemplating a new contract in Anaheim. For years, Moreno and his front office surrounded the world’s greatest player with a roster that could not back him up.
The Angels went 223-263 from 2021-23. They never finished with more than 77 wins in a season. They never once played a meaningful September game. The Angels provided him with a comfortable environment.

But not a winning one.
His homers in Angels losses became a joke within the sport. Instead of indulging in the humor, complaining about the on-field product or just bolting at the first chance he could, he’s remained classy and thankful to his first big league team.

“For me, it’s a special place,” Ohtani said, noting he still keeps tabs on the Angels. “I spent the most time compared to other stadiums — being able to spend the time playing in front of the fans.”

The Angels are 25 1/2 games worse than their Los Angeles counterparts. The Dodgers have the best record in baseball. The Angels are the worst in the AL West.
The Dodgers are paying him $700 million over 10 years, and agreed to his salary deferral plan. The Angels wouldn’t countenance any of that.

Hearing that begs a pretty obvious question. What exactly was he supposed to do? The Dodgers were willing to spend. The Angels were not.

“The vitriol for Ohtani amongst Halos fans is that he’s playing for the crosstown rivals,” said Chuck Richter, a lifelong Angels fan who runs an online Angels message board and hosts an Angels podcast. “There is real hate for the Dodgers by most lifetime Angels fans.

“If he would have went to Toronto, I would be an Ohtani fan still,” Richter added. “Not maybe the same level when he was with the Angels, but I would hope he would win a World Series with the Blue Jays.”

Sports fandom isn’t always nuanced and rational. The die-hards don’t like when you leave their team for their rival. It truly can be that simple, even if it shouldn’t be.

The Dodgers would have been a strong team even without Ohtani. The Angels wouldn’t be a playoff team if Ohtani had agreed to stay. Still, his return highlights a stark contrast between these two SoCal ball clubs. And heightens the emotions that the Angels fanbase might feel as he steps into the batters box.

As of Monday, the Angels said they had no plans to honor Ohtani before Tuesday’s game. A spokesman noted it’s possible that could change.

If they were to follow through on that plan, and actually do nothing, it would be a mistake. A bad one.
The team delivered a classy pre-game gesture before his pre-season exhibition game in March. They played a video and congratulated him on his MVP. The fans in the lightly filled stadium applauded, Ohtani waved.

He poured everything he could into this place. The reason he’s no longer there has everything to do with organizational frugality and incompetence. Hopefully, the moment is a positive one for all involved, and then the competitive juices can flow. That’s baseball. That’s sports. Do everything you can to beat your opponent.

“Hopefully when we do play him, we’re able to shut him down,” Washington said. “That’s what I want to do. Shut Ohtani down.”
But whether they shut him down, or he hits a home run, that respect and appreciation for Ohtani should never waver. He’s earned that much.

That’s the way to honor him – every year, just clear and empty his locker in the middle of the game.

I don’t agree that fans are justified in being mad at Ohtani. Why should they be ? It is not like he badmouthed the team. He played hard every day and kept his mouth shut about the losing. He has only every had positive things to say about the organization and his teammates. I would expect no less from a classy, humble citizen of Japan.

Besides, Shohei and his team gave Arte every chance to be a part of the bidding. In fact, they reached out many times during the process. If anything it was Team Arte and Co. that rebuffed Shohei. My belief (and there is evidence to this) is that Arte never intended to spend the money it would take to keep the All Time GOAT. He only wanted to give the fanbase the impression that he tried. In fact he really didn’t.

Exactly. Arte passed on the chance to help Nez ask for an extra 30M from the Doyers.

No, what actually happened was that Nez threw out the number $50 million per year pretty early in the conversation. Arte told Nez (paraphrase) that there is no way the marketplace would give Shohei $50 million per year… Not sure if Arte believed that or if he was just trying to extricate himself… in any case, that is what he said.

Of course, Arte was waaay wrong as Shohei got alot more than $50 million per by pulling in $70 million !

Detmers gained some MPH…even Cann’ting gained some MPH. Both had fluctuations in that improvement.

That was under Wise, Barry can get a little Juice on Kerry’s FB.

This is misinformation. The Angels have zero talent in the minors. You love Putin, I mean Arte. Full stop.

But truly I dig Kerry. His type. He doesn’t throw 100 MPH so he’ll always be a 45 grade prospect, but I am actually a big supporter of drafting and developing starters with “stuff” over velo. I have no science to back it up, but my thinking is that these guys will go seven innings more often and get hurt less. Then if you have a bullpen full of 98 MPH+ guys…. this could be cheap and effective even if it’s not glamourous. Like the 1990 Reds.

I love a 104 MPH fastball as much as the next guy, but I think if you get guys to tone down a little and PITCH the way ISright did with Soriano this year you’ll get a better team.

Trying to decide which are worse, MFY fans or Doyer fans.

I think it’s Doyer fans. On the road, they both suck, to the point where I have sworn never to attend a game at the Big A vs the MFY. On the gripping hand, in their native habitat in the Bronx, MFY fans can be relatively decent. Doyer fans are still just thugs at the Latrine.

Agree with you here red. I too have been to several games where the Angels played in NY (both old and new Yankee Stadium) and the fans were predominantly friendly. Yeah, they would tease in a good natured way, but they were almost never mean. In fact, a few were actually respectful of the Angels and the team we had (this is back when we were good lol).

I think I encountered maybe 1-2 mean ones over several games spanning a few years.

The Doyer fans to me are second worst in MLB only to Boston fans.

the better time to hang around Doyer fans is mid-October but you should have plenty of ‘AZ D-Backs – NL Champs 2023’ stuff lying around

Good morning, did you know that the record for a batter hitting the most 3-run HRs in a season in the American League is by Ken Griffey Jr. with 13? Yep, 13, I know the Angels don’t have to worry none about having a player accomplishing that lofty goal, although we could tie the record for most HRs with nobody on. Oh, you want to know who holds the National League record? Ok, now if I told you it is held, the record for 3-run blasts in one season is a Shortstop, who comes to mind? Now think of current starting National League Shortstops, who do you think it is. Another clue you say, he played for the Rays at one time. One more clue-he is at present employed bt the former American League team.

The Angels great Mike Trout may not even have 3-run HRs that even total 13, but Willy Adames has 29 HRs in ’24 of which 13 have been 3-run jobs and with a month yet to go may just break the record and be in sole possession of the record by himself, impressive, very impressive. Congratulations goes out to Brewers Willy Adames 🏆

To hit 3 run jimmy-jacks, one must have runners on base before you. To be fair to Trout, when he was in his prime, the Halos failed to provide the opportunities.

What’s the all time single season record for solo dingers? Cuz if MNT stayed healthy this year he’d have that major league record sewn up.

The day of reckoning has finally come — Detmers Day vs Shohei’s return.

I’ll be at the game. Anyone else?

Hi, Pineapple. Long time no see. I had been busy, and could not keep up with the Angels or for that matter whole MLB.

I’m going to fulfill my promise. I’ll be in Anaheim this morning, and I’ll go to the Big A. Where are you sitting? I have not bought the ticket, but I’ll sit close to you so that I can visit!

It would be the most Detmers think ever to shut them down for 8 innings after a long AAA stint. We’ll see.

Or, he throws a no-hitter for 8 innings, gets pulled after walking the leadoff batter in the ninth and his replacement promptly surrenders a two-run bomb to win the game.

We have Ben Joyce.
Blowing 9th inning saves are for teams who do not have Ben Joyce.

Detmers only game at the Big A vs the Doyers was last year in June:

7 inning 2 hits 1 BB 8 K’s

It’s going to be pretty hard to top that one against the hated ones.
