LA Angels Tuesday News Crash: Batting Allergy

Alex Verdugo is allergic to his batting gloves and his tattoos. Cobalt and chromium are nasty. I wonder what genius decided to make tattoo inks out of them. I wear gloves just to oil paint with those elements.

Old friend Alex Cobb just went on the injured list.

Austin Riley has a fractured hand after being hit by a pitch on Sunday. It may be the end of his season. Hunter Greene appears to have avoided major injury. He should be back vomiting on the mound in no time. Ketel Marte is on the injured list now. The Dodgers just DFAd Nick Ahmed. Freddie Freeman is playing though a hairline fracture of his finger.

Luis Garcia of the Astros is out for the rest of the season. The Pirates just designated right-hander Ryder Ryan for assignment. Ryder Ruffley is still in the War Room with Merkin Muffley.

I believe 1 of 3 scenarios happen if we get the first draft pick.

Ethan Holiday spurns our drafting of him to sit out and enter next season.

Holiday signs a huge NIL deal to get the “college experience” knowing he will spend almost no time in the minors

Perry chooses to draft under slot at #1 so he can draft two high school pitchers coming off TJ in the 9th -10th round.

I believe the correct answer is (e) None of the above.

There’s some interesting math to run on scenario 2.

Last year’s top pick had a slot value of $10.75 million. It has been over $10 million for a few years but nobody has actually signed for full slot. Skenes got $9.2 million last year.

Three years from now it should be about $11.5 million given its current pace. So if Ethan can nab a couple million in NIL money and say $10.5 million as the first overall pick, he’d be about $3-4 million better off than Skenes.

That’s a big gamble to make on yourself, though. If his draft stock drops more than 10 spots he’s worse off than Skenes.

The glass-empty drumbeat of this site is beginning to wear me down. I don’t believe it is the opinion of most Angels’ fans that our franchise is abysmal, stupid and unworthy of our interest and support. But that appears to be the prevailing opinion here.

I choose to focus on the beauty of the game itself, an interesting group of young players and my optimistic viewpoint on most things (other than politics). I’m 75 years old and wish to spend my remaining years enjoying my Angels fandom. Sorry for a lot of you folks!

it’s much easier to hide behind a keyboard and get your negative thoughts off on others (I’m absolutely guilty of this), than enjoy things as a collective.

I’m not hiding nor am I trying to harsh the buzz of others.

I’m 63. I grew up in Diamond Bar. I remember when to 57 and 60 didn’t exist, and when Orange County still had orange groves. I cheered in 2002, and cried in 2009 when Adenhart was killed. I’ve suffered with the team since its inception and have earned enough service stripes to vent about the state of affairs during Arte’s reign of terror.

I’m not looking to create more misery for Angel fans. It’s already there with or without me.

“I don’t believe it is the opinion of most Angels’ fans that our franchise is abysmal, stupid and unworthy of our interest and support. “

The nightly attendance (actual butts in seats) speaks clearly that this is the case. We are truly abysmal. But I still love these losers!

You are what your record attendance says you are.

By record, we are 4th worst team, so the glass is about 14% full. Seems about right

I get that and respect that, but we are now last, behind the A’s, in the West (with the Ass-tro’s once again probably winning the division). That has kind of a stupefying affect on my desire to watch current Angels baseball, as opposed to retreating to YouTube and watching the good ol’ days of 1993, 1997, 2013, or some such year, and I like Wash and some of our young players. Sigh, you have good, admirable reasons, but it’s hard to stay interested right now.

I’m trying to keep an even perspective. We’re a bad team right now but we have some good young pieces that are fun to watch.

Anybody basing this season on wins and losses is going to be bummed out. But if you look at it as (hopefully) a developmental year for a future core, this is an interesting season.

When I first posted it, the Angels piece was going for a $1. Others, over $150, $92, several for $70. The Angels are a fraction of all the others. Just like like our farm rankings and place in the standings, at the bottom.

Derp. You left out Yeferson Vargas. Doesn’t fit the narrative? 1.38 ERA 15K/13 innings.

Cowboy26

Jorge Yeferson’s 1.231 WHIP and 5.53 BB/9 is a little high for Low A ball but he just turned 20 years so we have Hopium.

BTW You didnt mention the 26 year old Zeferjahn with his 2.35 ERA .782 WHIP and 22 k’s in 13-1/3 innings at the Great Salt Lake. He maybe a useful bullpen arm next year

Look both trades have already been a win for the Halos even though Cheap & evil Arte has 6 more mouths to feed Wish sandwiches to in his minor league slum. but I just find it ironic that we cant seem to have nice things even when this ball club does something right

Not sure why I should be happy about a player’s failure. I do care how the players the Angels received are doing. But I don’t root against former players.

Good morning to all. Neto is on track to lead the team in HR’s, a serious accomplishment even on bad team. What a future this kid has, as for Perry haters, Neto was a first round pick by PTP.

Some one said about a year or so ago, of current players, looking at those under 25, that Witt Jr. would be the one to make it to the HOF and i’ve been watching him more closely ever since.

Yep, he’s on track to the HOF.

Sure. I guess. Our season is so shitty, it’s necessary to create reasons to be excitable. However, the stats don’t lie regarding Witt vs. Neto.

Neto 2024 season stats

  • AVG: .261, 57th
  • HR: 18, Tied-54th
  • RBI: 62, Tied-44th
  • OPS: .784, 42nd

Witt Jr. 2024 season stats

  • AVG: .349, 1st
  • HR: 25, Tied-19th
  • RBI: 91, 5th
  • OPS: 1.014, 3rd

I hate Perry for many reasons, mainly, team results. Yes, he selected him. He did not ignore the “this is the guy to take” flashing signs coming from the CtPG fan pile. Angels needed a SS with batting skills and drafted a SS with batting skills.

Take a piece of paper, draw a line down the middle. On the left, write down Minasian’s good transactions. On the right, put down the bad ones. Which one has more entries? I’ll give you a clue, it’s not the one of the left. Results actually matter. Minasian is not very good at his job, whatever it actually is under Arturo, which isn’t clear.

Love that we have a shortstop that we may be able to count on for the next generation.
I’ll have to see another full year like this.

Senator_John_Blutarsky

Neto’s performance this year is encouraging. When he’s produced similar results or better for multiple seasons, then we have something special.

As for Perry: he’s done some good things, and he’s done some not so good things. He’s performed “okay” as a GM. The narrative that everything bad that happens with player personnel is the work of Arte is naive. If the intent is to play that card, then let’s pretend that Arte told Perry to draft Neto. It’s just as ludicrous a proposition.
