LA Angels Tuesday News Crash: Improvement

Here is an article about Jo Adell’s new swing and improvement he is seeing. It is unclear whether the article is written by Rhett Bollinger or Jordan Bastien.

Will Wagner got selected by the Blue Jays in time for the series with the Angels. Will he be a thorn in our side, a walking error, or just sit on the bench? The Padres reinstated Joe Musgrove from the 60 day IL and designated Carl Edwards for assignment to make room.

The Mariners just extended Victor Robles for two years. Only two years? Grow a pair Jerry. Extend him through his age 42 season.

Minor league right-hander Matt Bowman opted out of his deal with the Twins and is now a free agent. Instead, the Twins promoted Zebby Matthews who also was not on the 40 man roster. Other moves must be forthcoming.

Mookie Betts is back. He is playing right field and batting second after some former pitcher. The Dodgers also designated Ahmed Rosario for assignment.

Jarren Duran got suspended two games for uttering that homophobic slur at a fan. While that article says Duran was suspended by MLB, MLB says that the Red Sox suspended him “in consultation with Major League Baseball.” In any event, his salary for those two games will go to a charity supporting LGBTQ people and those who love them.

Jo Adell: 4th career HR robbery

He now leads MLB right fielders in Defensive Runs Saved.

All 4 for Adell have come in the last 3 seasons. Only Kyle Tucker (6) and Tyrone Taylor (5) have more in that time.

Relievers just don’t compare….Better to use a good starter to lock down a WS win than a overpaid 9th inning pitcher (Mad Bum 2014 WS vs the Royals).

Source?

Because if so, why did the Baltimore Orioles suck so bad when he was their pitching coach?

Funny how one little word matters…his time not all time.

Baseball-Reference.com: “Leo Mazzone was considered by many to be the best pitching coach of his time. He was the long-time pitching coach for the Atlanta Braves and also coached the Baltimore Orioles, albeit with less success.”

Seems like a fair reaction from Yunel and like a dumb conversation to engage in these days. You either think one way and want every one else to do the same or think the opposite way and keep quiet about it so as to not get called a bigot.

nominated for stupidest article I’ve read this week: Matt Snyder at cbs dot com with his belief that “non-contending teams” should not IBB Aaron Judge.

“How about letting your pitchers have a chance to prove themselves against the best slugger in the league? Every batter faced provides the opportunity for a learning experience”

and “Let your pitchers face him and evaluate them. That’s basically all that’s left in the season for non-contenders: evaluation. What good does it do a young pitcher on a bad team to be told, “you aren’t allowed to face this guy. He’s too good.” ”

But it’s ok for contending teams to walk him because they want to “stack wins”.

Does that guy understand the concept of baseball? I don’t think so

Any athletic non-competitive actions are highly offensive to me. In addition, “non-contending teams” have a duty to play well against contenders for integrity’s sake.

He probably believes it’s a bonus that the pitcher who was in AA last week gets to “experience” Judge hitting a 450′ laser off the out of town scoreboard.

Intentionally walking Judge is kinda like Verlander losing a no-hitter because Aybar bunted for a basehit during a no-hitter. Teams play the games to win not to glorify other players.

Dropping the leg kick has done wonders for Adell, Neto, and even Shohei at the start of his career.

Should Trout consider doing the same? Maybe it would help with his god-awful contact numbers vs fastballs.

PedroCerrano

That is great thought. Earlier in his career he didn’t seem to have as tough a time getting to fastballs and I’ve always attributed that to his desire to go deep along with his added bulk. The greatness of Trout’s hitting in my mind is due to having a short, quick and still powerful swing.

If anyone has the time, can you plz pull Adell’s numbers since he ditched the leg kick?

Jo Adell in August:

44 PA
.300 / .344 / .520
.864 OPS
2 HR
2 doubles
7 RBIs
20.5% K%
9.1% BB%

Too small a sample size as all players, both good-bad-grat have ebbs and flows as Adell has had in the past. We all hope for one of two things to happen to Adell, one is that he become a .270-25-90 hitter, or he is traded for one.

Pineapple12

This sample size directly coincides with Jo scrapping the leg kick. Pretty significant development… let’s see how the rest of the season goes.

For you P12. No Problema. Since July 29:

52 PAs.289/.385/.533 2 DBLs 3 HRs 8 RBIs 5 BBs 11 K’s .323 BABIP 1 SBs

Now he actually had already started a resurgence prior to July 30th It started on July 12th as his numbers over that period were:

45 PA’s .270/.400/.405 2 DBLs 1 HR 8 RBIs 7 BBs 12 Ks .375 BABIP 3 SBs

So combined over his last 100 PA’s, Adells numbers are very encouraging. The strikeouts are definitely down without the leg kick while he has definitely not experienced a loss in power so Jo is right about that.

I think power is one of those things that I naturally can generate,” Adell said. “I don’t think I really have to create it. It’s going to give me a chance to be simpler and kind of get to the ball a little bit better — and especially facing good fastballs and situations with runners on. [It] gives me a better chance to put those balls in play and do more damage.”

Too bad Schanny doesn’t have any natural Power. He’d be incredible.

Schanny this offseason will scrap the stand-all-day long for……

-sitting/laying/standing lifting weights get stronger and quicker
-sitting/laying/standing doing yoga/pilates what ever new age trend to increase his flexibility and counter his stiff swing.

……thus increasing his natural Power. He’s 22. Still has some man weight to put on. All of this can get that OPS to be closer and Moore like Jo.

Free Schanny’s swing up!

Yeah. But Nevin would have given Adell a piece of my mind because one time he yelled at a player I don’t like. Sometimes you have to break all your young players so you feel like a real baseball man. Back in my day we walked both hills one way to snow school and drank away the pain damn it.

I was all in on Blake Snell in the offseason. We could’ve made a real run at a 2x Cy Young winner when his market was at its lowest. That surely won’t be the case when he turns down his PO and enters FA again after the season. He’s simply elite.

Before you tell me he has an ERA near 4 (I know) go look at his last 7 starts, which account for 65% of his total IP this season. For fun, go check out Jordan Montgomery’s stats and compare lol.

The only rational objection to signing Snell was to avoid adding another mega contract to the books. When his market came down the way it did, we should’ve pounced on the opportunity.

Sigh

2024 season (13 starts)
69 IP
3.91 ERA

Last 7 starts:
45.1 IP
0.998 ERA

No need for mental gymnastics, Blake Snell is elite.

Be careful what you ask Arte…..always remember trAdition still is with us.

I don’t care what he did this month. Whatever team pays that guy big money will come to regret it. He will be 32 next season and he’s only thrown more than 130 innings twice in his career. His no-no was the first complete game of his career!

The longer I watch the Angels swing and miss on free agents the more I admire Tampa’s approach. Why not spend your resources on development and only extend the core guys? They consistently jettison a few good players for prospect hauls each year and then let some other team pay for those guys through their 30s.

If the Angels applied these principles along with the ability to spend more than Tampa they could do good things. I know that the Angels don’t currently have an organizational philosophy or a culture but one can hope.

I wanted him too, he started rusty in the beginning of the season from waiting to be signed but is back to form. Snell wanted to stay on west coast and many MLB writers had him most likely headed to Angels. For a team desperate for a top rotation starter, Arte/Perry screwed up. After all the deadline non-trades it makes you wonder what the heck are they gonna do this offseason FA market.

Conveniently omitting the fact he’s a 2x Cy Young winner. I get it tho, having an actual ace on the staff locked in for 5+ years would’ve really sucked.

Two-time CYA winner is one thing, but what does he do in between. He certainly is not HOF bound. 30-million-dollar players need to show consistency, he does not. 30 million a season is enough to stall us in a rebuilding phase, that’ and he is not going to put us in the WS. I loved Dean Chance and Nolan Ryan, and even they couldn’t put us in the WS. We need trades and draft choices to get back to the top.
