MLB GM’s are in the lunch room with all their goodies on full display. And while the Angels have a nasty room temperature tuna sandwich as a main course, they do have a Capri Sun and a cookie that the cooler kids might want in a trade.
Who might Perry trade? We’ve talked about it a ton here and other publications are making predictions.
Sam Blum is predicting Arte to hold onto anybody controlled beyond 2024, which would be a mistake. If you have The Athletic, this is worth a read.
Reid Detmers is drawing plenty of trade interest. I wonder what other teams see that the Angels have failed to develop.
Of course, trades aren’t the only way to add talent. The Angels have signed many of their 2024 draftees including first rounder Christian Moore and 11th rounder Trey Gregory-Alford.
In a big blow to the Angels, third round draft pick Ryan Prager announced he will return as the Texas A&M ace in 2025. Not only do the Angels miss out on a chance to add a talented pitcher, they will not be able to allocate his slot bonus elsewhere.
A few late draft picks remain unsigned and 19th round Hail Mary Connor Gatwood will head to college instead of the paid ranks. But for the most part, Perry has secured the real talent he drafted outside of Prager.
There was also baseball this week including a sweep of the Mariners. Scoring wins behind Tyler Anderson and Jose Soriano made sense, but it was Griffin Canning with a stud performance in the sweep clincher.
Our Highlight of the Week comes from game one of that sweep. Look at Jo Adell settle down and drive the ball up the middle rather than come out of his shoes swinging for the fences. He’s done that quite a bit lately. Growth? I hope so.
Elsewhere around baseball, confirmed lowlife cheater Alex Cora signed on to stay in the city of lowlife cheating sports figures and I caused a bit of a tizzy by stating so.
I’m sure plenty of news will break this weekend regarding trades so please help us keep this post up to speed.
Enjoy your weekend. Summer in Southern California is the best.
Estevez gone to Phillies for their #23 and #28 (MLB rated) pitching prospects
Caden Dana tonight:
9 IP | 3 H | 2 R | 2 ER | 1 BB | 10 K
High School draftee with upside
Stupid Perry
He looks great!
I wonder when the trainers will inject him with “Arte’s Remedy” serum that broke Newcomb and Detmers?
Angels manager Ron Washington on the trade deadline: “No matter who we have left, we will have O’Hoppe, Neto, Schanuel, Moniak. That core is going to be here. Mike (Trout), Rendon are going to be here and we are going to perform with whatever we have.”

Im not putting too much stock in Wash omitting Adell, because he didn’t name Joyce or Soriano either.
You know O’Hoppe and Neto and Schanuel and Moniak…..
Adell and Joyce and Soriano and Dana
……..…but do recall, the most famous reindeer of all?
Rengifo the red-nosed reindeer, had a very shiny bat
and if you ever saw it
you’d see it go wack
All of the CTPG guys
Used to laugh and call him names
They never let poor Rengifo
Join in any baseball games
Nice
And he includes Moniak.

True.

So how does Zac Efflin compare to Tyler Anderson? (I noticed they both are under contract through next year) Should we expect a similar better or worse return for TA?
A quick look at Baseball Reference show 2 similar pitching records, with age being the biggest difference.
Anderson IP 1067.0 ERA 4.18 FIP 4.31 WHIP 1.266 H9 8.6 HR9 1.2 BB9 2.8 SO9 7.5
Eflin IP 947.0 ERA 4.26 FIP 4.03 WHIP 1.229 H9 9.2 HR9 1.3 BB9 1.9 SO9 7.8
With Monday’s scheduled off day , the Angels wont need to fill the 5th starter blackhole Until next Saturday August 3rd. It looks like the newest Angel acquisition is making a debut at the Great Salt Lake tomorrow so will we be seeing Johnny Cueto in an Angel uniform next Saturday?
Trout news. Davis Daniel recalled.
All I see is Rosenburp gone, Dav Dan up. Trout is Trout’ing
Nothing has changed, same as it ever was.
I don’t understand your comment. I tore the tendon in my ankle playing tennis and a lot of scar tissue built up. My ankle looks ugly, but felt fine after the inside scar tissue broke up.
Just that Trout is frequently hurting himself, or recovering from hurting himself.
And the deck chair reshuffling of SP.
And yes, I know scar tissue is a bitch.
And Trout just doesn’t heal very fast from any injury.
Trout was injured watching his wife give birth.
He knows what scar tissue is, you’re telling me the docs didn’t tell him to expect some pain when coming back? C’mon – no more excuses for the guy. He’s getting paid half-billion dollars to be on the field. You don’t go ask to get pulled from a game every time something is sore.
He was amazing before he hit age 28 and signed the mega-contract. If we get 80 games out of the guy per season now it’s a freaking miracle.
Trout is Aslan…. rumors abound and at some point he’s gonna show up and do some cool shit
…and then the ball hits him in the arm and he’s Rodney Dangerfield in Caddyshack

Over under on Season Ending TJ Knee Surgery date is August 15th.
I’ll take the under.
$500,000 Eppei Bucks on the over. One more tease that he’s coming back.
IIIIII….. don’t care anymore.
I don’t understand your comment either.
I know some of yall may want this from the trade SIMs thing, but now they make you pay so here….
O’s Phillies trade was a shrug. Hays (0.6)/Dominguez(-0.7)
O’s/Rays Efflin was worth (17.2) and that pile of prospects was worth(11.7) with Horvath being the big get. #10 prospect.
Mariners/Blue Jays Garcia was worth (1.3) and Clase is worth (4.1) and Sharp’s a toss in with no lising.
Eflin’s off the board and was probably the best “non splash” starter candidate. So now teams will shift to guys like our Anderson a bit. Or spend bigger in a guy like Taillon.
It’s not a suprise that the team with the biggest pile of +++ prospects got Eflin.
It is of note, for some of us, that Eflin did not net a #1 prospect.
Doyers do like bringing guys back home. Still hear on the intrawebs they want Anderson.
Jerrah’ on the phone, making more trades. Yumi Yumi!
I think this is good for us as the more available relievers that are traded to teams we have a no/seldom trade policy the more suitors are left for an Estevez trade.
Aidan Miller would work.
We’re likely not getting their 2nd best prospect (55 grade) for 2 months of a closer. But maybe we could snag Saltiban or Rincones Jr and some down list guy, maybe Klassen….
I was more posturing as I know that it is not likely realistic. But… they really need him and so could a few others. He’s only worth what someone is willing to pay.
Toss in Trout, get Stott and a prospect.
If only it was that easy.
Oh goody cuz we know Dombrowski ‘s favorite motto is
If we trade with the Phills there is a good chance we can get an above value starter prospect back because the Phils rotation is stacked and they have Painter and Abel in the wings.
So maybe a Klassen or an Aldegheri type pitching prospect…. maybe sneak a guy like Jalvin Arias too. That would be a realistic “big win”.
Perry was captured on video practicing before the trade deadline. https://youtu.be/Ag6DtzRUF5U?si=eeVW50ZAQzb4tdMI

A always thought running my fantasy football team (serious league, strong desire to win, with friends same group, very competitive, over 30 years) wasn’t much different to the real thing.
GM’ing is hard. Go PTP!
https://sports.yahoo.com/what-is-it-like-to-be-an-mlb-gm-at-the-trade-deadline-140055789.html
Is this article about how stupid Perry is? If not it’s fake news.
It seems to say horse trading is more interesting, fun and exciting when you have high quality horses to trade with.
And Perry is in the article, GM’s call him, but only because he’s stupid and they know they can fleece him.
They will trade us Olthof…..
Of course because you are your own cantankerous owner.
Owner…….and GM…..also POFO, and advance scout.
Even had a Arte moment long ago when I traded a Running Back because he signed with the Steelers. I hate the Steelers.
The Angels have been the best team in Baseball over the last 4 years against pitchers making their MLB debut
But…but… what about Cy Rookie?
WE are the Cy Rookie Now
Skip the base running segment.

Fkn Arte. What an asshole. He probably wants to eat some children before the DNC starts.
Chick-fil-A has a basement, it’s just like the pizza place in NY where Hillary eats.
It’s crazy to think that the Angels (probably) have one of the most desirable jobs once Arte is gone.
Only then will we be able to bring in front office people who can really turn this thing around. Sigh.
Because UnicornBigDaddyNewOwner?
What if UnicornBigDaddyNewOwner is the second coming of Jackie “Let’s contract the team” Autry, would this be such a “desirable” place in the NewOwner fantasy??
I won’t miss Arte when he leaves, if he does. But do you remember who Arte outbid to buy the Angels in the first place.
Yeah, frank McCourt. And there would have been no Guggenheim rescue here.
Don’t scare me Marco
I’m hoping the Ducks owners, the Samueli’s, get to buy the Angels. They have this whole OC Vibe community area plan in front of Honda Center being developed right now. It would be great to merge the Angels with the Ducks, which could also mean changing the name back to Anaheim.
I think the TV contract thing is running dry for Arte. If the profits dwindle, then so does his presence. He’s trying to milk for more money for the sale, but I don’t think the value is going up.
The sooner Arte and his family sell, the faster we get out of hell.
we need to trade the expiring contracts for whatever we can get. On the subject of Ward, Rengifo and Anderson, unless we can get something amazing, it wouldn’t be the end of the world to wait until the off-season to let a new GM take a shot at it. However, moving TA now would be best. His value will never be higher.
So, Mike Trout? Any further report? My two cents is he should’ve gotten the other surgery, the more permanent solution. However, with Trout it probably wouldn’t have made much of a difference either way. No reason to bring him back this year no matter what.
Longer to takes to get an update, the more likely it’s bad news…………trAdition
Who?
Trout is definitively the champion of “just resting up for next year”. Like a norse giant.
GOAT at Load Management?
-Kawhi Leonard
Actually, Leonard reminds me of Rendon. “He just doesn’t care enough to not have real injuries that limit him”.
Not being able to sign your third round pick is more than, “oh well.” It’s yet another fail for a farm system that is seriously depleted. I wonder who will be the next intern to replace current intern Minasian.
I understand we get an extra compensatory pick next year, somewhat lower but a better draft class. Maybe a new GM will pick better, so possibly a silver lining.
I was wondering about that. So maybe we find some luck on the backend of this mistake next year.
Don’t get your hopes up on PTP’s dismissal. I highly doubt Art even follows the draft outside of the 1st pick, not likely to get pissy about a young kid’s decision that had options…..with that said, looks like another blunder, not creating more confidence, that’s for sure.
Im not sure picking better is the problem. The Angels 2022 draft may go down as one of their stronger drafts in the 15 years ( That may not be saying much but you got to start somewhere)
I agree and even though the Angels get a 3rd comp pick next year I would consider this a fireable offense consider the state of the farm system.
But I think it is important for this organization to know why this happened. for example is it:
Maybe it’s a combination of things that happened but Perry is ultimately in charge and many of the same doofuses (Doofi?) that were involved in this debacle will probably be around next year when the next GM is hired.
In the grand scheme of baseball things, not being able to sign your third round pick is just about as “oh well” as it gets.
James Paxton is going to the Red Sox.
Great. I’m sure Sam the Hat thought it was important to announce that he will not be changing his superflous opinion on the Angels trade deadline plans that no-one cares about.
I feel so much better now.
Sam
the Hat. Sam is hat Free. Free the Hat…Free SamSo technically he can be categorized in the “Men without Hats” grouping?
Do you disagree with his “superfluous” opinion?
No. just as I dont disagree with the “opinion” that water is wet. But I’m not getting paid for my insight unlike the Blumster who has somehow hoodwinked The NY Times.
Availability is the best ability. I think Jeff Fletcher‘s takes more vacation days than trout. At least Sam’s breathless report on the wetness of water is a daily one…….unless of course he’s in Pittsburgh cover the Pirates, not sure why. Maybe he’s got a big scoop on the ward trade? 😀😀😀😀😀
Free Sams Hat!
Bring back the Hat!
Makes sense. I just don’t know what I would write about given the state of the franchise. It’s like nothing can realistically change until Arturo sells. So I’m willing to give him a little leeway.
His article about the trade deadline was actually one of his better ones and likely one that most here would agree with. However, here’s a quote from Perry ““To talk about next season and the season after that, for me doesn’t necessarily make sense.”
Yes Perry, and that is exactly the problem. No long term plan.
