LA Angels Wednesday News Crash: Proud to be an Angels fan

Good Morning Angels fans! Have some links!

Angels News

The Angels won their second game in a row, and thus their first series win at home! All against the 2nd best team in the NL West, a CY Rookie pitcher, and way too many Padres fans in the stands.

As Tyler Anderson again showed on Monday, he is an even year pitcher. Not just 2024 and 2022 either. His 2016 and 2018 seasons were also above average while his 2021, 2023, and 2019 seasons were his worst. Yes, his 2017 season was slightly above average and his 2020 slightly below, but he is better in even years and bad in odd years. So yes, I agree trade him so that his 2025 is someone else’s problem.

Some good news! Jo Adell won defensive player of the month!

Around Baseball

Gambling in Baseball is a serious matter. Multiple players are now punished severely. 4 get a 1 year suspension. While Tucupita Marcano has been banned for life due to betting on the Pirates while being on the Pirates. Or maybe it was because he made bets on 25 Pirate games and had a win rate of less than 1/20. Dude critically FAILED and spent over 150K to be banned FOR-EV-ER.

The opposite of being punished is David Fletcher, who, as a knuckleball pitcher for Atlanta’s AA team, threw another gem. HOW?! And wasn’t HE caught betting?!

Especially since it was with the same guy Ippei used, and Ippei is being sentenced in OCT for a long time. Not likely the 33 years max sentence, but still.

With all this gambling, it is the perfect time for Fan Duel to buy the naming rights to the 18 regional sports networks that are currently Bally Sports. You know, THE SPORTS BETTING COMPANY.

In non gambling news, Christian Javier is having TJ surgery. Astros pitching is very thin.

Oh and the A’s will try to play some games outside of LV after the stadium is built in a stupid “multi home” thing that the Rays were laughed at for suggesting. Because it is. And it might happen this time.

For once, Social Media did a good thing, as it was responsible for Angel Herandez to take Manfred’s bribe to retire already. Maybe we misjudged you social media… NAH!

Anything I missed? Post below for upvotes!

Pillar instead of Moniak

Hey, I saw a clip of Bauer being stunned by a bad call and thought it would be a good time to see how he’s doing in Mexico.

6-0, 1.53 ERA

Nobody is rushing to get him. He’s 33 now

I am impressed with what ever method Arte used to infiltrate Houston’s FO, hire the cheesiest training staff, and then snap the elbow tendons of so many of their pitchers. Shohei’s mom was always aware of the evil lurking at the Big A…. but now the whole of the MLB may feel the stink. PLUS, Arte obviously ruined Forest Whitely. Ol’CheapnEvil weaves his wicked web.

The Halos have strike a balance with keeping young rough guys, retaining guys who are legit (Reneeeefo & Ward) and maybe cast-off trade some of the journeyman, though they won’t fetch much return.

I also must express my extreme lack of confidence that Arte & Perry will get much a return if we trade anyone (i.e. Quero trade). Sandoval and Anderson seem the two names bandied about, Anderson could net a very good return if it’s made at the right time, the right team and the Halos receive some needed guidance from another club-LOL.

I trust PTP but have no faith in Arte being the final yes or no. Our GM went for it all last year and it backfired. Renfroe had been putting up decent power numbers in seasons prior and had some decent moments. Drury worked out. Players who are on the cusp of turning it around or turning it off are a very tough call. But when you have limited info because of a weak scouting department the right choices are tough to make.

Rengifo has shown good upside for second half last year and first part of this season, he has value and with this current team is worth more in a trade than holding on to him. I like Ward, but again in value his value is to trade him for youth. This team is stuck with two contracts that have been producing only injury for years and we need to start from scratch to see light at the end of the tunnel.

Our last winning season saw no Playoffs when the Royal won a WS. Finances pushed them to sell off some great and very good players and look where they are now. That Angels keep trying to win and avoid a sell off and nothing changes, we are long overdue to try another way to get to the playoffs. Selling off what little we have in assets gives us a chance for another day were holding on gives us nothing as proven for way too long.

First Hunter Dozier gets indicted then released by the Angels….wait a sec….um…just released by the Angels, I had the wrong guy.

Sheesh, I forgot about Dozier, and seeing his AA numbers, that is an easy forget.

Angels: Victor Mederos, RHP (No. 15)
Though Mederos did spend some time in the big leagues last summer, he’s not been able to consistently harness his stuff to get outs and get back to Los Angeles. After posting a 6.94 ERA in Double-A over five April starts, he found a little bit of a better groove this month. It would be nice to see him miss more bats and walk fewer hitters (9 K’s in 23 1/3 IP), he has posted an impressive 1.54 ERA, .183 BAA and 0.99 WHIP in four starts.

But during that same May month, Mederos produced a very unimpressive 4.5 K’s/9 & 1.16 K/BB.

Manager Ron Washington said the Angels are likely to stick with four starters until June 15, which is the next day that they would need a pitcher to replace demoted left-hander Reid Detmers.

The Angels have an off day on Thursday and another next Monday, pushing the need for another pitcher back to the Saturday game in San Francisco.

Although Washington said on Sunday that right-hander Chase Silseth could be a candidate, the Angels now have Silseth’s next minor league rehab start scheduled for Thursday. That would not give him time to squeeze in a third minor league outing before that June 15 game.

Another good game by Sandy. After laying an egg vs Cleveland, he’s had 2 great bounce back games against 2 teams better than the Angels. I would like to see him go 7 or maybe even 8, like Tyler has done. But nevertheless, it was a great game.

Keep doing this Sandy and the team will have two viable pitchers on the market by the deadline.

This is the trajectory I was hoping for Reid. Have a bad start, or a couple of them, but course-correct after.

Pulling a page outta Frosty’s book, why are we so quick to want and trade Sandy? His ceiling is somewhere around a #2-3 and is under team control thru 2026.

Pumping 95-97 MPH is a game changer. Let’s see him maintain that for the rest of the season.

Anderson and maybe Canning should be moved. Sandy is a keeper imo.

I’m inclined to trade Sandy exactly because he’s still cost-controlled, and as long as he plays good, would probably fetch better prospects than Tyler.

Angels are not going to contend for another 2-3 years. By then, Sandy will be 29/30 years old. Would you rather have a 24 yr old Kyle Bradish-type, or a 30 yr old Patrick Sandoval during that time?

Fair pov. My rebuttal would be that Bradish was an unheralded prospect in our shit system and BMore turned him elite. Are we gonna be able to do that with whatever middling prospect we get in return for Sandy? History tells us the answer is a resounding no.

Barry Enright is starting to cook. I want to see Sandy grow into the #2 that I believe he can be. Of course, I think Detmers is a future CY Young so take my opinion with a grain of salt lol.

If we can confidently say this team is a year away from serious contention, I would hold on to Sandy, even if his inconsistency drives me nuts. But we have to be realistic and admit we’re still a ways off.

Fair on Bradish. It’s foolish, but I’m hoping we get the favorable karma this time on whoever “unheralded prospects” we’ll eventually get from the bullpen we’ll trade away. But I’m hoping for a top 6-10 prospect from the mid-tier farm systems for the likes of Sandy, Tyler, Ward and Rengifo, and some throw-ins that more likely than not, we’ll never hear from again. But hopefully, they’re a winning lottery ticket instead.

Bradish is now 27 years old. When he was 24 he was putting up a 4.67 ERA and a 1.431 WHIP at AAA Norfolk. He didnt really figure it out until last season in his 5th year of professional baseball.

Even though hes actually younger than Bradish, Sandy is a little bit different in that he was drafted out of high school at the age of 18. His stuff is quality and I think he knows what he’s doing now but he’s his own worst enemy . The meltdowns you see on the mound are just the tip of the ice berg as I under stand hes a hot head off the field as well. If he could ever figured out how to control his emotions, I firmly believe he could be a top pitcher in this league but thats a big if.

If you asked who I would close it would have to Bradish. Even though they are essentially the same age, there’s enough of a record now on Bradish that he could be consistently good going forward. And considering hes still a year or two away from Arbitration a much better value for a budget conscious team.

Sandy is borderline. 2026 is an early ETA for us being good again. BUT he could be kept/extended. On the other hand, control through 2026 is what gives him a lot of trade value. So if some team offers mink and caviar for him, trade him.

I’m not saying we shouldn’t or won’t, but I’m not understanding why people here think we are going to start trading away our younger cost controlled players?
This would require a change of course and admit we are rebuilding. A word this owner doesn’t have in his vocabulary.

We don’t have the farm system to replace these guys. We are not an attractive destination for free agent’s. We need to field a team next year.

Sandy has always struggled with efficiency so he always runs out of pitches by 5 or 6 innings.

I looked at the standings and the Padres are only a .500 team. No wonder we’re beating them.

They’re .500 because of the two losses handed to them by the Halos. 😀

Rendone has 2 years left on his contract, and once he’s finally gone our payroll will be clean as as a whistle.

Vlad Jr. will be a FA after the 2025 season. I know it’s a ways away, but I’m ready to reignite the Vlad Jr. to Anaheim dream.

Junior is over-hyped and has a body-type that will not age well. He’ll command a Rendon-like annual salary and will become the newest addition to the Angels “Barcalounger Brigade” of players collecting exorbitant compensation to relax on IR.

The MLB Owners got behind Manfraud’s idea to tie into sports betting so some money could be made and now the hammer is dropping on players and Bally sports is belly up and Sho and Fletch dodge bullets. Was it really worth the money to give MLB a black eye?

Does anyone know the real rules here? Don’t use Bookies and don’t bet on MLB-got it. But Poker tournaments are Ok but not in casinos in Vegas, Ok. Gardena or on tribal lands-is that Ok? Betting on your own team is a logical no go and at least since 1920 that rule has been around.

Can’t help it but I keep going back to PEDS, if players had been banned for cheating for cheating and stiffer punishments had been laid out on teams for sign stealing maybe players would think more about their careers. Sports Gambling is an addiction, that does not mean get out of jail free cards to be used, it just means that the closer to the sport’s betting world the pro leagues venture, the more that the games will in the long run get their tails in the ringer and the authentic Wins and points scored will ultimately be questioned and when the time comes and it will, that games are fixed then what will the leagues be worth.

If I could be the leader of a major league in the world of sports, I would pull teams out of Vegas and drop all tie in to Sports Gaming of all kinds. Kennesaw Landis was no woke nice guy, he came down hard on Gambling and now MLB should read into their own history before the pass a point of no return.

I got to understand why Miss America and Miss Universe Pageants are held in casinos (I actually met Trump during one). My friend was the video producer on one and invited me in – he explained the whole thing. The casinos invite in their high-rollers from all over the world. High-rollers are invited to a party to meet the girls. Girls go with the high-rollers gambling. High-rollers lose money showing off. The casinos are all in on the suites and promotions with these sports teams. I expect the A’s will make a big Japanese signing after they arrive in Las Vegas.

Looks like the sports betting investigations are increasing in scope. They have expanded to both legal and illegal sports books and seem to have gotten to the point of cross reference of customer lists to names of athletes, and I doubt it is just athletes / personnel in just baseball. This is going to go on for awhile and ensnare participants in other sports as well as some organizations of criminals. Can’t help to think that this is just a continuation of the investigation that Phil Mikelson got caught up in. That was also Newport Beach/Orange County linked.

Remember when professional sports wouldn’t have a team in Las Vegas because of legalized gambling?

Remember when sports went testing crazy to identify PED users?

Remember when the NCAA would not approve student athletes being paid?

Remember when placing advertising on MLB uniforms was unthinkable?

I do too.

Once the public gets desensitized it’s just a matter of time before it’s accepted. The desensitizing moves rapidly if the government figures out a way to tax it.

GrandpaBaseball

About PED users being tested randomly and that didn’t include the whole league? I do not remember MLB going crazy about because the player’s union never allowed it, that why to this day many still question big HR totals and lost a great many die-hard fans.
