Memorial Day weekend is upon us. Before getting to baseball it is paramount we thank those who paid the ultimate sacrifice so we can spend our weekends wrapped in the cloak of freedom, playing baseball and enjoying our families. If anybody in your life has paid this sacrifice our hearts go out to you.
And now to our regular programming…
Raise your hand if you predicted the Angels would head to Texas and win series against both the defending World Series champs and the team that has had a stranglehold on the division for nearly a decade. Yeah, me neither.
But win back to back series is exactly what the Angels did for the first time this season.
Let the kids play? Yes! Kyren Paris delivered the big blow Wednesday. His first MLB home run. Look at the million dollar smile on the kid’s face. This was a really enjoyable moment as an Angels fan.
As much as I’d love for that to be the highlight of the week, I have to go with Tyler Anderson’s dominant 8 inning performance.
Anderson is truly pitching masterfully this season. He’s mixing speeds and locations, getting weak contact, and parlaying those quick outs into longer outings. He neither racked up strikeouts (4 on the day) nor lit up the radar gun but he did what really matters: 8 IP, 1 ER, 6 hits, 4 K’s, 2 BB. On the day Anderson threw 95 pitches, or about 12 per inning.
Back to those kids, they carried the team to a win over Houston on Monday night. Four Angels age 25 or younger hit a home run in that game. If we are looking/hoping for a core to emerge this season Monday was a great day.
Unfortunately one of those kids, Zach Neto, left Wednesday’s game with elbow soreness. He’s dealt with elbow issues since youth so hopefully this isn’t bad.
Not only playing well when healthy but showing up and talking to the media? Anthony Rendon is full of surprises in 2024. In that link above Rendon talked about his slowly healing hamstring injury. He’s still out for a long time.
Now the Angels head home where they have been dreadful. On the road, they are a .500 team. At home, the wheels fall off.

6-16 is the worst home record in the league. I can grant them a pretty tough home schedule thus far, but that is horrid. If the Angels continue this pace they’ll go 22-59 at the Big A this year.
Turning that home record around won’t get any easier this homestand and the very tough Cleveland Guardians and New York Yankees come to town.
The Yankees currently feature young star Juan Soto and a $300 million payroll. Their owner Hal Steinbrenner called the Yanks payroll “unsustainable” while discussing a potential Soto extension.
When the Yankees care about payroll, things are wrong in the baseball world. I’ve written about and linked the impending cable TV fallout for half of the league. The Yanks aren’t a part of Diamond Sports but if they are starting to count dollars, it isn’t a good sign for the rest of the league.
The Baltimore Orioles were swept for the first time in 107 series. That is a pretty impressive streak.
Baltimore was swept by the Cardinals, who feature prominently in the trade deadline piece. Uncharacteristically the Cardinals are disappointing at the MLB level and have an uninspiring farm system.
Conference tournaments are kicking off across college baseball. I’ve been watching the SEC tournament both for fun and to scout potential draft picks. Here is that schedule.
UC Irvine wraps up the year with a three game home set against CSU, Northridge. The Anteaters are ranked highly enough they could host a Regional in the NCAA tourney if they hold onto the spot.
Enjoy the games and stick around for some draft coverage. Cookmeister outlined some players to watch and I took a look at college arms we could select in the first round.
I’ll be publishing pieces on college position players and players who might make good picks later in the draft.
Let’s all welcome aboard the first CtPG intern Nolan Jess. He’ll be writing more post games and writing pieces that allow him to find his niche in the sports world as he prepares to major in sports broadcasting.
Enjoy your weekend but also remember why we have Monday off work. My son’s league takes Saturday off so we have our final game of the season on Wednesday. It has been another great season of spending time with my son, watching him smile and make friends and improve on the field. To say I love him beyond words is an understatement and I’m so thankful for this time with him.
L
Man, I am really happy I’m not a Rockies fan.
Or deeply committed to the White Sox.
Those are some truly bleak teams even if I kinda like the Sox.
I wonder how Goose “5th Starter” Gaskin is…..
Why didn’t Arte buy Neto a better elbow? What an asshole.
Do we still hate Ron Washington this weekend? Someone tell me how to think and feel.
Joe Adell. Officially crossed into positive DRS in the outfield as an MLB player recently. Billy Eppler hasn’t been around thinking he knows more about baseball than I do for a while, so I guess I can be a little OK with Jo. But Arte still owns the team, so Jo’s still a total bust. Why is almost everyone involved with baseball more dumber than me?
I’m not a scientist. Do Derek Jeter’s kids arrive with herpes?
The A’s rookie closer has six years of club control and the A’s may trade him. Being an A’s fan now must be like drinking toilet water to survive. Will Las Vegas try to send them back? At least they aren’t owned by Arte. Lucky A’s fans.
I kind of want to extend Taylor Ward. I like the cut of his jib. And he has perfect hair all the time. Two things a young team needs. I’d kind of rather have him at 20M a year for 5 years than Juan Soto at 45M a year for 10. I no trust Soto and he’ll be a DH at 30.
Mu Shu Pork. That shit is good.
I donāt āhateā Washington, but I do hate the hire, I just dislike Washington as the manager. As for Jeter, itās not herpes, itās jerpes, he gets his very own strain, because he is āthe captainā .
In 2024, Iām watching a lot more White Sox, Aās, Rockies, especially Metsā¦..and of course, the Halos.
thatās my baseball universe and the Angels are the Kings of that land!!
Cant wait until Cheap Ass Arte realizes how much money he can make by bringing this delicacy to Anaheim. Off course maybe this is one of Perry’s new pre game Nutrition plans for the Trash Panda Players

The commentary is hilarious. He calls two fit guys eating bugs sick and twisted, and they cut to an overweight couple eating hot dogs and calls that normal ā¦
TJS scheduled for next Friday?

Obviously it’s just matter of time!!
Death Elbow. It’s nice the team’s putting on a brave face for the kid, but we all won’t be fooled again.
Back from a trip to the USAF Museum in Dayton, Ohio (City of light, city of magic!). So I missed the two best series of the season so far. I appreciate how difficult it is for East Coasters to keep up with the games. On the bright side, I did get to see a Sukhoi Su-27UB Flanker in the flesh, along with about a gazillion other planes. Great trip.
Awesome museum, was there at Wright-Paterson in 2003 on business for a B-2 meeting. Needed two days to go through and see everything. I only had a half-day. They had yet to have a B-2 on display, came later. Fan of the WW airplanes.
I want to go there.
Hopefully they start playing league average, respectable baseball his home-stand.
Win a home day game for a change, 0-6. Stop doing what youāve been doing!
Free home cooking!
Tonight’s Lineups…no Neto
https://www.mlb.com/gameday/guardians-vs-angels/2024/05/24/746227/preview
Normal teams have an update on Neto by nowā¦.where is Sam the Hat when you need him, knock on a door and ask.
But the training staff said they werenāt worried!
They just havenāt decided on the surgery date yet
So we need to play the rest of the schedule on the roadļ»æ š ļ»æ. Rojas is seems is better at PXP than GMing ļ»æ š ļ»æ. How the heck did the A’s pass us on the downhill? Dang A’s.ļ»æ š ļ»æ. Typical that the Halos will win just anuff (ļ»æ š ļ»æ) to not get a top 3 or 4 pick, rebuild-you wanta talk rebuild!ļ»æ š® ļ»æ. Will the real Detmers please stand up. Pillar is playing out of his mind, good for him.ļ»æ š ļ»æ. I am a big Neato Neto fan and love O’Hoppe.ļ»æ šÆ ļ»æ.
ļ»æ ā¤ ļ»æEveryone have a wonderful and safe 3 day holiday. To Vets we thank you for your service, you are thought of this weekend.

Another kid from Cubaā¦. we might be able to form A Cuban Boy Band in the future.

And Roberto Baldoquin can be the Band Manager.
Whta do you have in mind for band name?
The “Cohibas”
Not sure how many we have? The Fidel 4? Or is it 3? The Fightāen Castroās overtake the Assātros!
Late May Organizational awakening?

@Jared_Tims
prospect Anthony Scull is red hot right now for Inland E

Any desire to get the band back together, or is everyone happy with the Matty V, Patty O’Shit, Razzle Dazzle trifecta ?
I’m all in for the rojas and gubi reunion.
Rojas Fridays instead of Patty and Matty V?
Hell yes !! And please!!
But Iām a fan of Razzel Dazzel. Maybe Victor would want to ease back in.
I liike Wayne. No need rolling back the clock. Gubi is a good guy but a new voice would not crush me. His little sayings after a home run are a bit cheesy.
Definitely. Love Vic on the air and he lets me join him in the booth.
I’m probably in the minority, but I don’t like Rojas at all
If were bringing anybody back I would want the Wonder Dog…love him.
I think I would rather have all my fingernails yanked off simultaneously then ever hear again how “Hud” broke up a fight between Billy Martin and Ed Whitson. I think he told that story to “Fizz” at least 2,393,818 times.
The worst announcing team in all of Angel history. Even Bob Starr was better. Or Don Nelson.
Rojas is knowledgeable, knows the game and rules, plays well with Gubi. Rojas is arrogant, knows more than the fans he is talking too, talks down to people and from the 6th inning on he and Gubi are in their own zone and if the team is losing (Happens a lot of late I notice, can’t get nothing by me you knowļ»æ š ļ»æ) the conversation can and will be about anything except baseball. So, either way is kool for me. Patty O never improved, Matty V. is fun for me to listen to, and I am ambivalent about Razzle Dazzle.
Bring Dick back from the grave, prop him up and have Rich Little do Dick-Oh My…..
Drysdale would be my dead guy choice along with Doctor Angel Fever.
I like Rojas. He is less of a homer for the Angels and isn’t as afraid to speak truth.
Randazzo is great. An unquestioned W for Arte & Carpino which have been few and far between.
You’re going to make me bring it up aren’t you?
*ahem*
Does Victor know the different between a base hit and a double? If so then he would do a better job than Razzle Dazzle.
In all seriousness, Randazzo is good, but I can’t un-hear that he does this in every game and it drives me absolutely nuts.
so should it be bases hit or base hits for a double?
Any alternative to O’Neal would be a massive improvement! Victor probably wouldn’t pass the Arte test. I like Wayne.
If we were to trade, we have better players than those mentioned in the deadline trade article. For next year, Soto would be a great addition to our young core as he is young as well and Rendon goes off the books in 2 years. It all depends on how soon you believe we could be competitive and how confident you are in our young players developing. We have a long way to go this year as we are not yet a third of the way through, and we’ll need to see where the young players are at the end of the year. Thus far, I am personally sold on Neto and O’Hoppe. The jury is still out for me on Schanuel, Adell, and Moniak. Adell is doing well so far, He needs to end the season at the same level he’s playing at now which WRC+ 123. If somehow we were to acquire Soto, Trout, Ward, and Adell, could rotate through the DH spot next year.
You were full on chubbin for the “We should totally keep Ohtani” thing the last couple years weren’t you.
Could not have been me because I have only been here since spring training this year, but since you ask, I would like to have kept Ohtani for a reasonable price as he’s a great player but certainly for nothing close to what he got. However, I was totally in favor of trading him last year at the deadline and I was against the trades that were made.
Rendon will likely be back when Trout returns. I predict All-Star break for both. The wins over the two Texas teams were fun. Angels now need Detmers to figure it out. Heās become the weak link.
BTW Neto says he will be ok. Apparently just something minor he can play through. Thatās good news.
Please link the Neto news. I haven’t seen that anywhere
Re: Neto. Thatās a bit concerning to me as it sounds potentially chronic and something that may worsen over time. Hope Iām wrong.
I hope we get the MNT that hit about 30 jacks when he returned after the back ailment in 22ā
Neto missed a lot of time last year, needs to fight through it to show he’s durable
If the guy who fixed him last year is still in SLC, Detmers should be optioned. The kid’s confidence is shot at this point. Needs a reset!
The Angels should just throw a big āSurprise Retirement Partyā for Rendon at the All Star Break. And I mean, so much of a surprise, that Rendone isnāt even aware of it. Just celebrate him so he feels good, and send him off to whatever he does when heās not temporarily playing baseball. At this point, he just keeps the team from having a consistent 3rd baseman, even if that player isnāt really a 3rd baseman.
Finally decided to buy a ticket to our next 3 Sunday home games (CLE, HOU, DET).
This team has won me over.
Fun fact —
Phillies are the best team in baseball, and over their last 8 series we played them the best. They took 2/3 with a +1 run differential. The +1 is their lowest RD in a single series since -7 vs. PIT (4/11 – 4/14). Fwiw, we should’ve won the series but Estevez happened.
Praying for positive news on Neto ššš
Arte enabler! ļ»æ š ļ»æ
Take the opener tonight!!
Just throw strikes Sandy.
