LA Angels Weekend News Crash: It’s Here!

The 2024 regular season has arrived. Six months of baseball every day. We can now let the joyous wins and the crushing defeats become part of our everyday lives again.

Mike Trout sums up Opening Day perfectly. And I can’t wait to cheer him on again this season.

There are predictions on every sports site. All you really need to read are CtPG’s and Fangraphs. At least, that’s all I’m going to link.

Pretty much everybody is predicting the Angels win total to start with a 7. If you want to have a little fun, the Angels are +5000 to win the AL West. In old school terms that means a 50 to 1 underdog.

Go ahead, put down $100 and see what happens. If you don’t have a bookie, just hit up Ohtani.

I joke, a bit, but that story is going to keep getting run until the truth or a logical story comes out. I sincerely hope he just helped out a friend and later figured out he broke a rule. But we’ll see.

Hat tip to Steve Wendt for sending me the press release on this. The Inland Empire 66ers, the Angels A ball affiliate, has been sold.

I’m working with Steve to set up a season preview interview in the coming weeks.

With MLB rosters set, teams now set up minor league rosters. Here is most of the Salt Lake City Bees.

Yes that is Andrew Wantz as a starter. Davis Daniel is the ace of the staff and next man up at the MLB level. This is definitely not a stacked AAA team by any measure.

The Dodgers started and ended the off season handing out 9 digit contracts. Will Smith, welcome to the club. This is the Will Smith that hits baseballs, not comedians.

Speaking of spending money, here are the top 5 and bottom 5 payrolls in MLB this season. The A’s are literally pocketing other teams money while trying to get taxpayers to fund their new park in Las Vegas. With profits like this built in, why even try to win?

We all predicted Jordan Montgomery to Arizona on a one year deal, right?

Here’s a thought: this rebuild/see what we have year is coming at a perfect time. Almost all of the top tier free agent talent available this off season is able to be back on the market next off season. Hopefully there will be more TV money (or any in the Angels case) to spur those opt outs. So if this team does show some promise there will likely be about two years of free agent talent available in a single off season.

For those of you who celebrate Easter, have a great one. I’ll be with family watching my little dude hunt eggs with his cousins.

Please link what I missed below.

Looks like we might get a rain delay to start the game… clear after that.

Assuming we play, I think we’ll win which will keep Hicks and Sano in the lineup longer

So no Bellinger and JD on long-term contracts so as not to block the kids (Moniak and Adell), but it’s fine for retreads like Hicks and Sano to do just that because at most they’ll likely be only with the team until July? THEN we finally play the kids, right?! RIGHT?!

So which retread will the Angels sign next offseason to block the kids, at least until July?!

Yeah, the Hicks thing in particular makes no sense to me, especially since he is an outfielder. Moniak showed what he can do last year — you’d think that the org would want to see if he could come close to replicating that over a full season… And we all know this is the final chance for Adell. If you are not going to go out and add the pitching we COULD have had in order to truly be competitive, (such as Snell or Monty) then you need to give him AB’s as well

So Moniak hit’s RHP way better than Hicks. And Hicks was proclaimed to be our lefty masher, but he’s in there against a righty. Awesome. Wash needs to go.

Perry signed Hicks and Sano. Maddon complained about Perry interfering. At this point I think Perry is deciding who plays

Well whoever is making the decisions needs to go. I can only watch like a few abs, and it’s blatantly obvious Sano’s bat is slow and he has Trout disease multiplied by 10x.

I’m not mad about Sano being on the team as a bench piece. The maddening part is starting him over Rengifo. I’ve addressed Hicks vs Moniak enough already this morning lol.

yea he has his place, starting against a lefty or a bat off the bench against a lefty. His days as an everyday player are long gone. People hating on Renny when hes 27 and put up a solid season last year I don’t get.

I’m more upset about Sano taking At Bats away from Jo Adell who typically has hit RHP’s better than LHP’s. Watching his potential base running skills this spring that “kid” is elite and we need to get him some At Bats.

Angels need to get Adell in the line-up at least 5 games a week. I don’t see where a pinch-hitting capacity or an occasional start will allow him to not press.

Agree. Sano is insurance at 3B for Rendone and could be a good power source/PH in late innings.

The really frustrating one for me is Hicks… Makes ZERO sense to me. Especially batting him 2nd over Schanuel…

Hicks likely has had his hot streak of the year this month. Spring Training can really muck up a manager’s mind.

Wonder how long we have to suffer thru Hicks and Sano starting over Rengifo and Moniak/Adell.

Benching 2+ WAR players in their 20s for journeymen. Gotta love it

You are happy that a player (27 years old btw) who has put up 4.3 WAR for us in the last 2 seasons is now riding the bench?

We don’t see ball in the same way.

Luis Rengifo 2022-2023

Took me exactly two days to realize Wash is not the guy this team needs. If he can’t see Sano can’t hit velocity especially coming from righthanders then he is blind. Can he hit a lefty that relies on off speed stuff, yes, can he hit righties relying mostly on velocity, hell to the no.

Yea, I’m pretty disappointed he’s starting a 34 year old Aaron Hicks over a 25 year old Mickey Moniak.

Not like Mickey was better last season, oh wait …

That one I don’t understand either especially against RHP’s although Hicks has better throwing arm and his wife is related to Tiger Woods.

I am a great admirer of the Rays and the incredible value they get out of their roster. I fully expect them to compete again this season.

If you consider 99 wins for 74 million compared to the Angels 73 wins for 240 million, it’s stunning. The Rays paid $740,000 per win. The Angels paid nearly $3.3 million per win. That means the Angels paid nearly 5x for every win by comparison. That is mind boggling.

Finally Oakland is hilarious. Rendon’s contract is basically their entire payroll.

Rays just keep drafting players that become MLB good. And young talent they trade for also turn out. Great scouting but some of it is also luck. How many times are you going to trade away great pitching and recoup that thru young talent. They will eventually be what A’s are now if they keep that tiny payroll.

It’s not luck if you have a successful system and you are good at player development. If it is luck it’s making your own luck.

Who wants to bet Drew Pomeranz is going to be great in the Dodgers bullpen this year? Like how every average player they get seems to magically become good? Dodger fans tell me it’s cause organization has a winning culture so players do better. Unlike Angels who suck so everyone that goes there becomes lousy. Thank god at least Thor proved that logic ain’t 100% !!

“ the Red Sox never really had much of a chance to sign Montgomery. He preferred not to sign with the Boston because he wants to win”

Does this mean that Monty valued wins over the chance to play with Mike Trout?

What is the tax situation in Arizona?

Asking for a friend who sees a lot of the FAs seeming to avoid high tax situations unless a shit hole like LA or New York offers them 300+ million.

Arte needs to pay the good FA’s more to get them here because…well….um….he’s Arte.

This offseason again proved that players will hold out for the most money when they believe they are owed a big payday. When that strategy fails, they message they will play for a team that can make the playoffs.

Arte could have had Snell, Montgomery, JD, Bellinger, etc. if he paid them. All players have to do is look how quickly the unicorn fled the scene and Trout’s plea for help going unnoticed to know this is not a desirable place to be. Arte being a known quantity can no longer get the really good free agents on a “bargain basement” price.

In protest of the A’s planned move to Las Vegas in 2028, fan groups staged a boycott of the home opener Thursday, purchasing tickets to the game to organize a block party outside the stadium. Paid attendance for the game was 13,522, but many never made it inside.

Marsh homered and of course the Mets out-Angeled the Angels today.

I love MLBTV. Present team excepted this has been a fine opening day.

Snakes alive in the 3rd 14 runs without a HR

So even with MLBTV they want an additional $99 to get the Dbeks too – I’m glad I will be able to watch them now ( but still)

Incredible technology that now allows me to watch a baseball game 10 miles from my house on Mlbtv -we live in a marvelous age 🙄

Not happening yet, but I would be fine with Rengifo at 3B, Drury at 2B, Moniak in LF against Righties, and Adell DHing. I don’t need to Rendon anymore and Hicks and Sano likely won’t be here next year.

sometimes it’s hard to deal with national media bias. Like that ESPN thing where Ohtani was on a “practice team”. Or mlb dot com that keeps showing Yankee highlights in between innings on Gameday.

It’s a day off today and I’m following women’s basketball because Oregon State is alive. So it was merely annoying before their game vs Notre Dame when the CBS Sports photo was captioned “Irish in action today” but come on!! After Oregon State won you’d think it’d be something like “Oregon State beats Notre Dame to reach the Elite Eight” or something like that. No, of course not. It’s “Irish fall in round of 16”. (It’s since been changed to “Oregon St. women dump Irish from Sweet 16”. Hey, a mention!)

Meanwhile I’m reminded of the story of John Lennon, recording in NYC, with George Harrison and Jim Keltner, and Keltner saying something rude about McCartney, to which the two ex-Beatles pretty much said “we can blast him but no one outside can”. So even though I’m bummed about yesterday and about the season’s outlook, I don’t appreciate articles saying “poor Mike Trout,, the team sucks”. *We* can say it but I don’t want to read it from know-nothings like Keown.

gitchogritchoffmypettis

Keltner’s the shit though…. and he was in on the whole “Join the Jim Keltner fan club…” joke…. so they seemed OK with him bagging on Paul WITH them.
