LA Angels Tuesday News Crash: Back Tightness

Nolan Schanuel has back tightness. He was scratched from yesterday’s game. It remains to be seen how serious it is. Ben Joyce had a good inning yesterday. That’s what we are looking for.

Here is Aaron Hicks scoring from first on an error.

The Giants are getting Blake Snell. The hits just keep on coming for the Yankees. DJ LeMahieu fouled a ball off of his foot and is now questionable for opening day due to bone bruise.

There was an attempted coup of sorts in the MLBPA yesterday. Not Tony Clark, but somebody pretty close to the top is on the hot seat.

Looks like rain on Opening Day (which is precisely why they have that Friday after opening day open)… if that’s the case, I can make the game. Was planning on going to the Saturday and maybe Sunday game, too, as I’ll be out in VA for the next two months starting this weekend.

Apparently it isn’t based on talent. More like longevity with the team. I don’t know.

Whew. 2 years at $31M per is a far cry from the seven-year deal Snell was supposedly angling for. Sort of sets the market for Montgomery doesn’t it? Thinking 3/$80M seems about right? I wouldn’t be mad if the Halos did that.

And its really a 1 yer deal because of the opt out. And you lose your draft pick

That’s the problem. Losing the draft pick. Angels cannot afford to do that.

Huh. Really? Signing Snell (or Montgomery, for that matter) would only cost the Halos their second-highest draft pick… and how big a deal is that, really, for a front-line starter? Even if it WAS their first-rounder, probably worth it. They draft eight this year. For shits and gigs, I called up the last 15 or so No. 8 picks prior to 2022 (since it wouldn’t be reasonable to expect more recent draftees to have made the Majors yet). And here is that illustrious group.

Benny Montgomery
Robert Hassell
Josh Jung
Carter Stewart
Adam Haseley
Cal Quantrill
Carson Fulmer
Kyle Freeland
Hunter Dozier
Mark Appel
Francisco Lindor
Delino DeShields
Mike Leake
Gordon Beckham
Casey Weathers
Drew Stubbs
Wade Townsend

So, yeah, if Montgomery costs us Francisco Lindor, no bueno. But there’s like a 7 percent chance of that happening. I’ll take the arm. Plenty of other draft picks to strike gold on…

Come what may, the real action can’t start soon enough. This has been a tedious offseason to say the least.

That’s all I got.

Especially with that structure for a deal. An expensive ($32 mil) one-year rental on a team expected to be a non-contender even if they sign him would be bad enough, and then you throw in the $30 mil player option if he sucks.

But I sure won’t be upset if Snell owns the Dodgers every time he faces them and the Giants knock out the Doyers in the playoffs.

Several months ago we posted that the over/under seemed to be 73, I’m changing the number to 72.5 and I’m on the under.

I’ll take the over. As it stands, this team won’t contend, but I do think they are better than the past two years. With the development of younger players, improved coaching and a relatively healthy season from Mike Trout (130 or more games), I expect this team to win 76-77 games. Big “ifs”? Maybe, but every other team has their “ifs” as well.

The March and April schedule looks brutal. If they come out of that stretch near .500 (not likely😀) I’ll be surprised. To me the biggest “if’s” involve health, this organization never stays healthy.

It’s inevitable that Pineapple and those likeminded hopium addicts will be correct and this collection of misfits will play like a team and make the playoffs in 2024.

Good morning all, we dodged a bullet by not signing Snell imho. Borass releases info about the Angels looking to sign one of his clients through his fav scrips and then sits back and waits for other teams to call so he can use the Halos as a starting point in money-while all the time knowing he can’t get Arte to make a commitment about signing anyone. All those “Scoops” about the Angels being “interested” never proved true. Are we seeing Arte lowering the payroll, oh yes, Why? To sell the team is why. But, he will still want the buyer to pay the court ordered money coming at the team and other billionaires are balking at that.

Rebuilding is the key word. it will be a long process and it will take time-so be it. Now if we can stay away from JD Martinez and Montgomery also, I want us to rebuild and stop signing the over 30 crowd.

I surmise if the Halos were going to sign anyone of substance, it would have been Snell. I don’t see another signing coming — unless it’s a Lorenzen or the like for a reduced deal. And the Angels would likely need to have decided one of their current starters won’t cut it do to the latter.

It seems Arte is looking for players that will pay him to allow them to join the team. I guess that leaves Bauer?

The angels should hire officers Malloy, and officers Reed to do a thorough investigation of Bauer. Those guys don’t F around, if they approve, I’m in.

Good thoughts. My concern is that the franchise is not rebuilding. They openly say they don’t rebuild, and their actions align to that philosophy.

To rebuild something it first has to be “destroyed” (torn down). Arte and the Minions haven’t torn down the team. They had the chance less than a year ago to sell off assets for prospects, and chose not to. Then they started to give assets away to save payroll.

Perry did make a smart hire with Washington so that player development could occur even – if it’s happening for the first time at the major league level. However, the team is not rebuilding. It’s not even reloading. It’s surely not rebalancing, rediscovering, recreating, or reassembling. There will be no rejoicing until they get real about building back better. 😂

Twebur

They first need to find the “Root Causes” behind the need for rebuilding. That will require “Moreno the Terrible” to assemble a “Blue Panel Think Tank” to think about what they need to think.

I’m right with you on this Senator. They are doing nothing. I’m actually puzzled by the signing of Stephenson under the circumstances. It’s almost as if Arte finally realized there is no short term path forward and is seriously considering selling. I’m not sure Artie actually has the money to either keep the team interesting while rebuilding like the Dodgers did, or to buy the jersey sellers he would need to continue his normal MO.
