LA Angels Tuesday News Crash: MRI

Ron Washington sez: “You see the ball. Hit the ball. Run. Field. Throw.”

Anthony Rendon is back. Let’s see how long it lasts this time. He got a double yesterday.

Gerrit Cole will be having an MRI on his pitching elbow. Something is wrong but they don’t yet know just how wrong it is. Oswald Peraza, also of the Yankees, will miss six to eight weeks with a shoulder injury. Lucas Giolito will be having elbow surgery this afternoon. The Giants will release J.D. Davis. He’s going through waivers right now.

Royals outfielder Dairon Blanco will get an MRI on his calf while Edward Cabrera gets his MRI on the shoulder.

Does Spring Training matter?

Friday Rangers score 2 runs and lose.

Saturday 1 run in a loss.

Sunday 1 run in a loss.

Monday 15 runs in an ass whipping win over the Angels.

Tuesday 0 runs in a loss.

Spring Training games only matter if you got feelz. They matter zero in reality both in terms of scoreboard and actual team evaluation due to the number of A, AA and AAA players who get invites and are on the field over Spring Training as well as managers not really managing to win Exactly zero conclusions can be drawn. I’ve seen guys bat .500+ in Spring Training only to start the season 0 fer 20. I’ve seen guys with awful Springs have a big start to the season. It means zero.

They don’t matter if Trout or Rendone batt .190, but matters if Adell does. It doesn’t matter if Sandoval’s ERA needs a scientific calculator to enumerate, but it does to Plesac and a few others.

For upcoming, hopefull upcomers and bubble guys ST is everything, for the obvious veterans and contracts being carried, it isn’t everything.

Robin Yount was around 37 or 38 playing CF everyday and he was part of the first generation of baseball weight trainers. He could still run and patrol CF just fine, Trout will be fine also for a few years to come.

This is of course addressing ONLY the age issue for Trout.

It is my strong belief that the reason why we have not had a meet-up at the Big A is because we would all co-support each other’s overdrinking to cover the pain of Halo fandom and end up without any designated drivers.

All the Rendone hate does not seem fair to me. No doubt, he is terribly overpaid and has grossly failed to come anywhere close to expectations. He has been injured.

He gets knocked for putting family first? What’s wrong with putting family first? It doesn’t mean he doesn’t show up for his job.

While his getting hurt again and missing significant time is a distinct possibility, it’s also possible that he is healthy and puts up impressive numbers. Not likely to be on par with his all star caliber seasons, but playing 130-140 games and batting 280/350/450 wouldn’t surprise me.

If we release him, I would almost expect him to go elsewhere and make us regret it.

HalosFanForLife

He’s had former teammates confirm that he showed limited interest in the game. When questioned about it, he obfuscates by saying it’s not a priority because God and his family come first. Well, he’s not the only one that sees it that way, but he’s the one with the reputation for not loving the game and it shows in his performance. He got paid, so we get what we get.

His attitude during these times is not what I like to see in a player, making it look like he’s not really interested in fulfilling his side of the contract. I can’t read minds, but in my job, when a person has that kind of attitude, production and missed time we try to find a way to help them move on to a place they’d be happier.

Roy Hobbs
Super Member

Nobody knocked him for saying he puts family first, just that his job, profession, and commitment to his contract didn’t seem to be very important to him based on his comments. While it’s certainly possible for him to put put up impressive numbers, it is highly unlikely. 280/350/450 is not even remotely impressive or very close to what he is theoretically getting paid for, although it would a dramatic improvement over the last 3 years. I would be very surprised at 280/350/450. He has shown the ability, at least when healthy, to get on base so they should leverage that by getting him out of the clean up slot and put him at the top of the order. Because of his perceived poor atitude, and lack of production, I do not think that we would ever regret releasing him although I am not suggesting we do. His ill advised public comments and poor performance, especially when you consider his compensation, is why people have negative feelings. I’ll be generous and say no one “hates” Him, they are just very frustrated by the fact that his contract apparently prevents the Angels from acquiring needed talent and moving forward.

FungoAle
Legend

As a former Rendon supporter and a fan of his signing on, I don’t think it is likely that he will ever put-up impressive numbers again. Just too far gone from his last productive year, 2019. I think he is now just a “guy”, nothing special.

You mean baseball 3rd?

Gale Sayers wrote a famous book entitled “I Am Third” (The inspiration for Brians Song) Where he stated that God was first , His family second but himself and his playing career were third. I dont think anyone ever questioned the Kansas Comet’s commitment even though his incredible career was cut short early by injuries. So IMHO it just comes down to cause and effect, Rendon has sucked as an Angel , his body has also broken down now but he cant keep his flap shut without saying something that comes across as moronic justification for what appears to be a laissez-faire attitude. In many ways he reminds me of Jimmy Edmonds who always acted like he didnt care about the team or even rehabbing his injuries effectively. Of course Edmonds went on to have multiple successful seasons in St Louis and is probably a borderline HOFer. Rendon actually jumped the shark and his Angel career may never amount to much more than a trivia discussion for candidate for the worst contract in MLB history. yet we dont know how he is in the clubhouse. if hes not a detriment to the team why not let him play?. There’s still a chance that we could get some production out some portion of his last 3 years of the contract.

This is a good question I guess We pay whatever he agrees to as he is now an unrestricted FA and apparently arbitration awards are not 100% guaranteed but prorated if the player is released early on. MLBTR wrote this:

Davis won an arbitration hearing over the Giants earlier in the offseason, which awarded him a $6.9MM salary. However, under the terms of the collective bargaining agreement, that sum isn’t fully guaranteed until Opening Day. By cutting him now, the Giants could potentially only owe him 30 days of termination pay — about $1.11MM. The CBA, however, explicitly states that this applies to players who have “failed to exhibit sufficient skill or competitive ability.” That hardly seems to apply to Davis, who hit .248/.325/.413 with 18 home runs during the 2023 regular season and is 6-for-15 with a pair of homers this spring (.400/.471/.800).

Under the previous collective bargaining agreement, no arbitration deals were fully guaranteed unless specifically bargained as such. The new set of rules fully guarantees the deals of players who agree to terms absent a hearing — but allows teams to move on from players who go to a hearing without being responsible for the full freight of the contract. A player released more 16 or more days before the season opener is entitled to 30 days of his prorated salary, whereas a player released with fewer than 16 days before the opener is entitled to 45 days of his prorated salary. Again, however, that’s contingent on “failure to exhibit sufficient skill or competitive ability.” Davis’ representatives at ALIGND Sports and the MLBPA ostensibly have cause to file a grievance on his behalf, claiming that his termination is not reflective of his skill (or lack thereof).

So it looks like the Giants are not off the hook quite yet for just 30 days of pay.

Timing is everything. In December, he probably could have pulled it off. Now, after everyone set their 40-man, ran players through waivers, and have gotten their eyes on prospects – it is hard to add someone to the mix.

He won the arbitration, so it really depends on who decides what ‘sufficient skill or competitive ability’ means. Davis is plagued by a freak injury/illness (like Jered Walsh) or a case of the yips, or developed a hole in his glove during ST. If they let the Giants off the hook because they signed a FA All-Star, what is to stop any team from doing this kind of end-run around the Arbitration process?

Good morning, everyone! I missed my opportunity to opine yesterday on Bauer’s appearance, but I read all of your comments regarding Bauer and chuckled when GranpaBaseball mentioned that he would want the Angels to sign Bauer. Nikkan Sports this morning published that he is likely not be picked up by any MLB team for now; it also mentions that he can return to Yokohama Baystars and play there and continue to communicate with MLB teams.

Nikkan Sports additionally reported that Japanese and Korean baseball fans are giddy that they would be able to watch Yu Darvish vs former Angels DH what’s his face in the first official MLB game. Dodgers also announced that Yoshinobu Yamamoto will start in the second of the Korea series.

I could not participate yesterday because I was umpiring local high school game in their first official day. It was rainy, windy and cold, but we finished the whole game. I was rusty, but was glad to be back behind the plate. I feel spring is around the corner.

National media may not but every local reporter in every city will be asking Trout/Neto/O’Hoppe what do they think of playing with someone accused of XX then add in that Bauer can’t shut up long enough for teams to forget he’s a jerk and you’ve got a season of other players being forced talking about Bauer instead of the Angels.

I hope they continue to pass on the clubhouse distraction.

Angels/Doyers concessions suck, can confirm. Whats your experience?

A new study ranking the top Major League Baseball stadiums in terms of concessions has found our local franchises lacking for fans wanting to grab a drink or a bite to eat during the game.

To determine the best ballparks for foodies, Ontario Bets created an index that took four key factors into account.

number of concessions stands divided by the stadium’s square footage
number of concessions stands in comparison to the stadium’s capacity
price of a beer per ounce

Unfortunately for the millions of fans going to Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles or Angel Stadium in Anaheim this year, the results weren’t good.

The Dodgers, who currently rank 9th in team payroll for 2024, were considered the 27th worst out of 30 teams when it comes to concessions.

The Angels, also among the upper half in terms of payroll at 13th, were 25th on the concession study.

Seattle, Blue Jays, Brewers are 1-3.

I think this is it. Google is amazing. https://ktla.com/news/california/dodgers-angels-among-worst-in-new-concession-study/

I agree with Safeco/T mobile Park being number one. Have their garlic fries and fish burger/tacos; you will be in heaven.

Really wasn’t anything noteworthy… athletics & red sux at the bottom. HR Derby and ASG in LA were fun, concession wise seemed liked everything newer was in the outfield. Hadn’t been there since Stadium Series Ducks v Kings years before so not an expert there at all. I was closer to home plate, which was below standard.

For the Big A (can’t speak for ‘23 as I took the year off attending) but it’s pretty awful. Price, quality, waiting, you name it. Even sitting in Club and having things delivered it’s about 50/50. Bringing things in (including a diaper bag) is first time every time there and the experience greatly depends on which security person there is. I’ve literally seen tall boys and other things snuck in and consumed but using Angels clear bags and following policy to a T is met with resistance.

Colorado and San Diego are much better in every category (recent examples).

Can’t think of a reason why I’d go there. I used to do the freeway series here and there but stopped that in the mid 2000s. I don’t know if it’s 20x better here but I still show up pretty often. Fireworks nights and some giveaways have been reason enough, even if the product on the field or in the concessions is D- grade. For what it’s worth, have been to crypto and StubHub center within the last 2 weeks. Crypto barely gets a passing grade (bringing in food they’ve gotten much better) and StubHub is the same as the Big A. I miss tailgating.

Says nothing about quality or diversity of concessions. Only measures availability and cost for the basics.

I think both might score even lower than they did if those were considered. Doyer dogs controversy has been going on for awhile and post covid Angels concessions have been downright awful. Even the better options that were behind home plate (by Michelle Carew statue/courtyard) aren’t as available as they once were.

Do they still have sundae in a helmet? That is all that matters. 😀

I don’t know when I last went to a game in Anaheim. I think it was around 2004 or something.

Last week we discussed the move of Betts to short. Here is a great article on the subject. I think he’s going to struggle but I expect by the end of the season he’ll make huge strides. The two most rushed positions are C and SS. That will take time to adjust to.

One of the greatest player acquisition mistakes (by the BoSox) since they traded The Babe….

All three of the prospects dealt by the Dodgers were highly regarded at the time. Now – Verdugo is a journeyman outfielder, Downs flamed out and Wong is a back-up catcher.

The Red Sox traded Mookie Betts and right-hander David Price to the Dodgers in exchange for outfielder Alex Verdugo and prospects Jeter Downs and Connor Wong on Feb. 10, 2020. The Dodgers also agreed to pay half of the remaining $96 million owed to Price over the last three years of his contract.

Betts was certainly a disaster, Jeff Bagwell for Larry Anderson is right there too.

Good morning, Angels brethren, I see that Borass and PTP still talking about Blake Snell and have added JT Martinez in the mix as well. Someone help me out here, Gerritt Cole was a Borass client also, right? Borass used us to get more from the Yankees and a pissed off Moreno and his hurt ass signed Rendone. Makes sense to bail Borass out while we are getting clipped. JD saw hittable pitches because of the lineup that the Dodgers had and now is 38 years old season. Can the Angels get any dumber? They sure can. 😂

Being “used” in business by someone requires your complicity. I have come to accept that the current version of Arte thrives on being outbid for marquee players because he gets more mileage by claiming “he tried” than by actually spending the money.

The first case of this was Boras and Mark Teixiera. They kept going back to Arte for higher and higher bids then signed with NY and said he was going to NY all along.

During the Cole negotiations Arte straight up told Boras he wanted Rendon. So he not only helped Boras get more from NY he let Boras know he’d overpay for Rendon.

It has to be difficult to come up with a worse strategy than that.

Texiera, Crawford, Beltre. Then it seemed We were pretty much boycotting BorAss free agents until the Rendone signing in the 2020 off season .

Conversely though The Angels did have success with WTY both out of college and then with the 2021 extension. but Stoneman strong armed the original negotiation out of the draft right up until the one year deadline ( I suspect this is why Weaver fell to us to the 12th pick int he first place) The extension was all Weavers doing . In fact I dont think Borass even showed up to the press conference.

I always thought it would be a good idea to bid up players so other teams overpaid them and wondered how often it happened.

You mean 36 year old season G Pa. But I disagree with your assessment on JDM. He has always been a professional hitter even prior to being in the star studded Doyer lineup and his stats reflect this. the biggest problem with him is his lack of a defensive position which is why the Doyers didnt re-sign him knowing they would pursue the unicorn.

I would think the Angels could get him cheap enough but this would definitely precipitate a trade of a fifth outfielder. The only outfielder with any real trade value is Ward although there may still be some lingering concerns over the injury that retard his evaluation by other teams.

The positional flexibility is why we shouldn’t sign him. We need the DH to spell Trout and Rendon, and having 5 OF works well for that.
