The Cardinals avoided arbitration with Tommy Edman. The Orioles, for their part, avoided arbitration with Cionel Perez. The Yankees avoided arbitration with Juan Soto on a one year deal for $31 Million.
The Pirates will sign Aroldis Chapman.
Collin McHugh has announced his retirement. So did Tony Wolters.
The Astros designated left-hander Matt Gage for assignment. The Angels already have a full 40 man roster, so these random guys are unlikely to get picked up. Or will he?
Hall of Famer Ryne Sandberg has been diagnosed with prostate cancer. It’s metastatic.

I’ve come around to being ok with a 3 year deal for Bellinger. Simply for the chance to have Sho underperform for them and Bellinger play at an MVP level for the Angels. Worth the risk IMO to get some ounce of ethos and narrative control back from the hated ones in Blue.
No Firework Articles?
Man the non-Boras Clients are starting to fly off the shelves the last few days. I guess for Scotty’s kids we have to wait until mid to late February?
I went to the NLDS game 2 and caught the DBacks pitching staff mow down the Dodgers… I think Enright is cooking up a similar formula. I’m not sure if it’s soon rate, velocity , arm angles or like that but I think he’s working in tandem to create something similar. I was able to see the variety and power on display that night, it just got me thinking. But with Shohei gone we have no starter like Zac Gallen. All of our left over starters pitch around batters, not through them. It’s going to be lame if we have nibbling starters
Angels sign Matt Moore – 1 year, $9m
Maybe Perry is reading our posts after all.
Well he should if he isn’t. But Now will they finally get rid of Ingram?
BTW it looks like Estevez is still the closer. https://twitter.com/TaylorBlakeWard/status/1749901966267040032
So that would currently leave us with:
Closer
Estevez
7 & 8 innings
Stephenson/Moore
5-7 innings
Soriano/Garcia/Joyce/Cimber
Long man/Mop up
Suarez
Only Soriano & Joyce have options left but this would mean there is no place right now on the Major League staff for Plesac or Kolarek. I guess Those are good problems to have
Let’s hope Ingram finally got his Big A parking pass cancelled
This sounds like depth (though it could still be deeper).
In AAA, bullpen has Herget, Wantz, Ingram and Kolarek. Rotation has Bachman, Plesac, Rosenberg, Daniel. All waiting in the wings.
We should also get Quijada and Warren back at some point (for what that is worth).
good. He gets a “small” raise
A little higher money than I expected but I’ll take it. Solid addition unless he suddenly unravels.
After Chapman, it came down to Moore for me. Diekman was plan B.
Nice to avoid a 2nd year, deadline material trade.
Really few comments today comparatively… quiet day.
The doldrums of the offseason indeed.
Sports talk radio today, multiple reports that we might be more than serious about having Mr. C. Bellinger join our little band of misfit toys.
Art needs his fix.
I was initially against this BUT the more I think about it, considering that Bellinger is only 28 years old and we are devoid of Left handed power and speed in our lineup this may make alot of sense even with the Yute movement.
Bellinger has no proven track record of staying good. He’s had two good seasons in like the last six. You cannot do a long-term deal and pay big money to someone like that. His best years have been when his next deal is up. Not a good sign.
Yea but his dad was on the 2002 WS team . That makes him a legacy.
Beltre, Mauer and Helton in. Surprised that only three made it in.
All three were studs-They all deserve it.

Does Twitter have a word count, because the “limited season tickets are still available, our representatives are standing by” got cut off
I dont understand this team at all. Either rebuild or try to win. What are we hoping to accomplish next year? Either try to acquire prospects or win more games.
As usual they are doing neither.
Signing some FAs mean the farm can percolate a little more. IMHO, I think the Halo brass promised Trout they’d never, “Tear down rebuild” before he signed that long term contract.
Percolate!??!? More like “not rely on” or “ignore”
And now we have Miguel Sano…
Whatever his salary……+ + more $ for extra food. He’s a big boy.
Yeah, that’s a tight end playin MLB.
he’s lost a ton of weight
Coming to Spring “in the best shape of his life”.
Round or pear-shaped?
More mediocrity.
So we DFA’d Alfonso Rivas… I can’t even remember who that was.
Bummer I thought he’d potentially be a good pick up. He’s a left handed hitting 1B/Outfielder with off the charts 1B defense . Think of Trey Cabbage with good defense that won’t strike out every other at bat
Apparently there is a chance he’ll make it through waivers, but we’ll see.
He only had 100 odd plate appearances last year. I can’t imagine anyone is eager to snap him up.
Either way, The Salt Lake Bees will be nasty this year
So they DFA’d him for a strike out machine in Sanó!
It’s been a year….and the “unfinished business” hasn’t even been started.
https://x.com/Angels/status/1617656148148224001?s=20
That’s as noteworthy as the WNBA documentary “Unfinished Business” on Amazon Prime.
Booooo Art.
Hall of F’s – Class of 2024 today
Beltre
Mauer
Helton
Wagner
maybe Sheffield – hope so – might as well let him in
on the other end, i think Torri is done but Frankie survives. And am surprised Bart isn’t getting much love at all.
I agree with Sheffield, he overcame that “…unhappy” comment he made in Milwaukee. He was a gamer and a HoFer.
I agree as well. Sheffield was very feared in the batters box. Hit baseballs hard every stop along the way. He is the only one that I would vote for but recognize Helton and Beltre will likely get in eventually. Mauer and Wagner should not.
Sheffield is both a better player than David Ortiz and failed fewer PED tests.
I’m not happy the bar is now set that low. But it is.
#freepeterose
Sheffield and Ortiz cheated to win.
Degenerate gamblers don’t always want to win. And the games Rose didn’t bet featured a lot of managerial behavior that is suspect at best.
No comparison.
I was just funnin’ Jeff, when Bart Giamatti died, so did any hope for Charley Hustle to grace the baseball HoF, unless as a paying customer.
What I can’t figure out is the permissions Rose has received to participate in certain MLB activities. Is he all the way out forever or not?
Mark my words Jeff, MLB will do some BS honoring, maybe even post humous induction, after Rose casts off his mortal coil.
I’d want Joe Jackson in before Rose. As far as I can tell, Shoeless Joe was banned because he wouldn’t snitch
This guy? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PJwt2dxx9yg I’m not sure he’ll ever get in.
My issue with Sheffield, even if you ignore his issues with “The Clear”, is as a young 19 to 20 year old he admitted he intentionally made errors in games to get out of Milwaukee.
I dont know about you but any time a player does not always give his best, for whatever reason, I have a hard time supporting him for baseballs most hallowed award.
Agreed.
Glad we didn’t sign Chapman. We don’t need a domestic abuser on the team. Yes, in an argument, firing a gun in anger in your garage is domestic violence, but he’s a celebrity and it was in Florida, so no arrest.
Eat it Doyers.

That headline got me a little hot under the collar.
The entitlement is just dripping all over my computer.
Two thoughts…
Mens…. Prostate cancer is real and messes with us more than any other cancer. Metastatic means it’s spread, not good!!

Getting checked is NOT this anymore
Know your PSA scores (slowly rising = no bueno), meet with a urologist/oncologist and get a biopsy if needed (polyps are normal). Catching cancer early is paramount to survival.
Self care is something that’s been normalized for women or ‘metrosexuals’. Nothing is more emasculating than being dead, get checked!
While you’re at it:

*I have tried to take 2 very serious subjects and bring attention to it while being a poor man’s comedian*
Thanks dude. Self care goes a long way and men don’t get checked like they should. Late last year I went and got a test…..(Clears throat)….that I had been putting off for too long, that men of my distinguished age group need to have.
Mercifully for me, and unfortunate for everyone else, all was clear on the test. Please self-check and check your significant other as well.
If your doctor orders a poop in the box don’t blow it off…get er done.
Yes, but for many of us, the doctor going in through the out door is the one test men generally put off-I did, but a good wife stayed on me to get it done.
My uncle had prostate cancer so I’m on the 3 year up periscope schedule.
Every six months to a year, and my urologist doesn’t even offer to take me out to dinner after.
By the way, the biopsy is extremely intrusive and painful, but if you need it, GET IT DONE!!!!
As the great Eric Cartman once said:
Indeed RF, on both fronts.
Good that you are putting in the effort bud.
This is the reason married men live longer.
It’s basically why I chose a female doctor.
It’s hard not to follow her advice when I know it’s for my own damn good.
Are you sure it wasn’t the skinnier fingers?
Her insistence makes me doubt her long term wisdom though….LOL
Is this a PSA for PSA’s?

Chevy’s next line in the movie was great: ”Whew…ever serve time, Doc?”
That sucks for Sandberg. Hoping for the best for him.
Rough news about Sandberg. I lived in the north side of Chicago in ‘88 and ‘89 (about a block from Wrigley). The Cubbies were a bunch of fun – particularly in ‘89 when Mark Grace showed up. That summer you couldn’t go anywhere without hearing the Cubs games on cabbies radios. You could literally walk down the street and follow the games listening to Harry Caray blaring from cab to cab. Those were the days and Sandberg was the toast of the town.
As an Angel fan, the hapless Cubs were right up my alley. They became my National League team. The film Taking Care of Business (1990) had the Angels and the Cubs in the World Series – a dream of mine. Particularly after the ‘89 Angels (91 wins but a very tough Division that year had them 3rd) and the ‘89 Cubs (93 wins – 1st in their Division)
So many great Sandberg memories. He always was a tough out – hope that applies to prostate cancer too.
