LA Angeles Wednesday News Crash: Rejected

Morning Angels fans. Have some links.

Angels News

So apparently, the Platypus hasn’t been locked up entirely. Stroman was given an offer by the Angels, but he rejected it even though it was more money. Ow.

More ow, apparently Detmers knew Ohtani wasn’t coming back. Like, I think we all knew, but still…

Detmers also revealed that the Angels will be on a 5 man rotation next season. Which he seems to be more comfortable with anyway.

Good news though, is that the Angels international signings are significant. 15 new guys including the 8th most sought after one. Someone more qualified than me needs to tell us if it is a good or bad class.

Look, hitters!

And more good news. K-Rod will be the manager of the Venezuela U15 National Team!

Around Baseball

Vlad’s other son is now a Met. Ew.

Poor Giants, no one wants to sign there because their hotels suck or something. At least that is what Logan Webb says.

They still have a chance though as there are a ton of FA players out there still. Seriously, the Hot Stove has been shut off.

Crickets

Somehow, the A’s get revenue sharing for 2024 despite not even having a stadium plan yet. Wow.

Anything I missed? Post below for upvotes!

Take 2:

Clevinger: 2/26. We need the innings and I want another righty.
Justin Turner: 1/10
Neris: 2/20
Soler: 2/20

Turner makes more sense than Anderson as our primary needs are likely going to be third base and a platoon partner for first base. We also need a plus bat for DH every day.

No ace but Clevinger, Detmers, Sandoval, Anderson, Canning with Silseth, Plesac, and Davis in AAA shouldn’t embarrass themselves.

Plenty of pop up and down the lineup. Nice bench of Turner and Rengifo when Rendon is healthy.

Bullpen adds a veteran anchor.

For a nano-second, I thought we signed Clevinger….

To your point, he would round out our youngish rotation quite nicely indeed.

As I said previously, Shohei pitched poorly over the last two months apart from the ace-like start in Detroit. We won’t miss his pitching (much) IMO.,,, of course his bat is another matter.

Agreed but with the DH not Ocupado this year it would enable us to possibly rotate better bats through out the lineup to potentially produce more runs (That and the Fat Boy and the Pool hustler have to stay healthy of course)

I’m hoping and praying that Fat Boy embraces his inner Edgar Martinez and focuses almost solely on health, flexibility and the art of hitting. Perhaps he can be the 4th OF to give Moniak & Crew and occasional breather.

If you watch the whole Ron Washington interview on foul territory, he discussed his recent conversations with Mike Trout where Mike’s biggest request for change to Wash was to be more aggressive on the field and on the base paths. I’m sure this made Wash but I keep thinking there goes his latest attempt to stay healthy throughout the season.

Hhhhmmmm

Well… hopefully this means that Trout is going to shed a pounds of mass, etc. At 32, the only way to increase speed is to lose some weight.

Would still prefer Moniak in CF immediately.

True. And the position player group would be largely all guys who put up wRC+ of 100 or more last year including several likely to be better this year.

Trout 135
Soler 126
Drury 114
Rengifo 114
Moniak 114
Turner 114
O’Hoppe 113
Schanuel 112
Ward 107

Then you have the Netos and Rendon’s about 90. Thaiss was down about 75.

Clevinger would keep Perry from signing Lorenzen, good. Clevinger might be a nice deadline candidate if he does pitch well. Clevinger, Silseth and Canning from the right side with Sandy, Detmers and Anderson (or Ryu and Lauer) from the left.

I’m not sure why the Angels would not just commit to Adelle as the power bat vs a 3-year Soler. Jo has 30+ homers in his bat if he could get 500+ABs and I’m not really a fan of the guy. Why not make 2024 the year we fish or cut bait on this guy.

There is no reliever on the FA market who will make a significant difference. It is all recycled arms that keep ending up FAs.

All for Justin Turner. Make that piece happen. Again, potential bat for a contender at the deadline.

I also think Adell hits 30+ dingers with 500+ AB’s. The question boils down to batting average (.200 or .250) and strike out rate (30% or 40%) ????

Good observation Soler. Expensive veteran version of Adelle. I don’t really like either option. Turner be a great add IMHO.

Assuming Arte gets his TV money and has about $40 million to spend ($60 million off last year minus the $20 million or so Ohtani brought in endorsement money).

Clevinger: 2/26 million
Neris: 2 years $16 million
Jorge Soler: 2 years $20 million
Tim Anderson: 1 year $10 million

Some decent names here, Jeff. I suspect Clevinger is done though. He’s not on my list of wants. There are other names that would be fine also. The team needs depth and guys that make contact mostly. Plus bullpen arms and one decent starter.

I like Clevinger but you maybe right Stan that hes closer to the end although I’m curious what his velocity is now that hes a couple years removed from TJS.

Neris is old but still effective ( and has been his whole career) I’m a little leery of giving out 2 year deals to older relievers ( Tepera & Loup are still fresh in the memory bank) but he can definitely use the veteran presence.

Soler reminds me of Big Daddy when he gets on one of those ht streaks where you just cant shit past him but his defense has been lbadr. According to the Fielding bible he amassed -5 DRS in just 230 innings last year so obviously the Marlins used him primarily as a DH. With Rendon & trout can we afford to do that next year?

Anderson’s defensive work at short last year was abysmal but as a starting second basemen ( which he played during the WBC) and a backup to Neto I think it would be intriguing. (especially with Wash’s fielding instruction) I’m not sure you would need to pay him $10 million though after 2 subpar seasons with the bat.

Clevinger put up 3.3 WAR across 131 innings last year. Even with a little drop in production he’d still be no worse than Detmers (2.1 WAR in 148) or Sandoval (0.5 WAR in 144.2).

Anderson’s stats in all areas were likely down due to injury. I’m betting on a healthy Anderson being closer to his normal self.

Soler is DH most days with at most 1 or 2 days in the field. I like him better than JD Martinez because he can give Trout a day off and absorb garbage time.

Soler is basically a DH that you run out to the outfield once in a while just for kicks. Anderson used to be a stud. Unless they caught him for PEDs or something, he’s worth a gamble. The talent is there.

Like Cowboy’s comments about Soler below – I wonder what role Tim Anderson would have.

Is he better than Drury at 2B (paying 10M, we would expect him to start, right?)? Can he fill in for Rendon at 3B? Is he suited to a bench role, and if so better than Rengifo in that role?

I do think we need an additional IF, in case of injury, but I would prefer someone with more positional flexibility. Unless we are replacing one of Schanuel, Drury, Neto, Rendon in the IF, then anyone we sign is basically competing for a bench spot to go along with Rengifo, a C (Thaiss?), and OF (Adell?). Getting someone who can cover all positions, but at least 1B and 3B would be critical, I would think. (We have Soto, Paris, Stefanic for the middle of the IF).

Sure, someone needs to be play DH sometimes, but we want to rotate Trout and Rendon there (right?), so they should have versatility too (which is why I am not high on bringing in JD, for example).

Jeff Joiner

I’m counting on zero games from Rendon. Donovan Solano has positional flexibility. So does Whit Merrifield. But none really specialize at third base.

Justin Turner fits this team like a glove if Rendon is even remotely healthy. Turner could also spell Schanuel at first against lefties.

Actually, the more I think about it the more I’d prefer JT to Anderson.

With the Diamond bankruptcy uncertainty remaining for 2025 it’s interesting to note that we have only 4 players under contract for that season Totaling $96.7 million) . And the 4th highest amount belongs to Evan White at $8,000,000. But, we will have at least 12 arbitration eligible players with only Rengifo and Canning in their 3rd and final year of eligibility.

It will be interesting to see if Perry is even allowed to sign any players beyond this year even if they are only 2 year deals . It will certainly tell us what Arte thinks of his precious TV deal for the ensuing years

I like Reid Detmers being candid here. I think most players didn’t just feel this in the offseason, but even way back in August.

Oh, and Reid is excited to be back to an expected 5-man rotation, and be on a more regular, consistent turn (and not being moved around too much because a certain someone had on ouchie.)

I’m in the Bay Area too… I was wondering what my options were. I’ve just enjoyed the 19 A’s games a year (when the schedule was skewed which was nice), plus any vs the Giants, and then MLB Network on cable had a bunch, which was enough for me.
But those numbers are dropping a lot.

GP Baseball, where did you get idea Dodgers abandoning Kershaw?? Ridiculous, no way are they going to let the greatest LA Dodger era player walk to another team and ruin his legacy as one team HOF. If it were true, sure definitely sign him it would be a huge rebuttal to Ohtani signing. Unfortunately no way the organization let it happen nor Kershaw himself would be interested in leaving. Only reason he is still unsigned is cause his surgery, but after he will be back in blue 2024.

I know you are 100% correct assuming he can pitch again.
No sure thing with shoulder surgery.
I know there is no way he comes to Anaheim, i doubt the Rangers as well.
I half jokingly said he should be an Angel.
The other half of the unfunny “joke” I should have added is he wouldnt have to worry about blowing up in the playoffs in Anaheim.
Playoffs???

99% Dodger blue. But I wouldn’t completely rule out the Rangers. We’re only talking about 3 months at the end of the season plus a likely playoff run.

Pulp Fiction is a very loose “sequel” in that a character in R.Dogs is briefly mentioned in P.Fiction, but it was more an “Easter Egg” for die hards to catch.

This movie as cast & written then wouldn’t get green lit in the current social environment.

It’s always fun for me to rewatch something and see what I missed. Good call. Rewatched a few King of the Hill episodes recently (where the souphanousiphone’s are constantly making fun of where they used to live, OC) and noticed a Bart Simpson doll in Bobby’s room. Obviously a crossover worker from Simpson’s adding in their little flare. I thought Hank was loosely based on a Beavis and Butthead character.

All Tarentino films of that era have loose connections or easter eggs.

Uma Thurman literally lays out the plots of the 2 Kill Bill films at the dinner table in Pulp Fiction.

It is literally the ‘70s again except the teams in the early 70s actually had a slightly better record than the teams in the early 2020s. ‘24 is shaping up like ‘74 with likely around 68 wins. And there was similarly with the Halos ‘wasting’ Nolan Ryan in the 70s decade just like ‘wasting’ Trout in the 2020s.

If history repeats itself, then we have some ugly seasons approaching followed by some hope and success at the end of the decade.

I remember!! Crazy proposition that a single person or two would be in charge of all CA sports team sites. So much for dichotomy.
Im not sure Rev’s Hamilton post has aged well (I loved it at the time and it got me to create an account/start posting) and still think it’s BS SB Nation deleted it/reprimanded him. I guess on that note, maybe we can add drug/alcohol use and players bedroom lives to the list of things we shouldn’t talk about. Those tend to go sideways and typically don’t age well. There are 3 sides to a story but the focus is usually only one one.
We will RIP mayhood or talk up people having problems (the guy who would translate Ohtani’s pressers comes to mind) and at the same time admonish our current coach for past misgivings or generally shit on someone who doesn’t give in to low hanging fruit. Doesn’t make for a very welcoming environment and I know I’m not making things easy on myself… but I do enjoy dissenting opinions as much as concurring ones.
I think the current back and forth between Stephen A Myth and Jason Whitelock offer a lot of substance to what is going on in the sports world and how it’s being reported.
But I digress, go Angels!

Funny.
How about when we had Finley, Langston and Abbott?
I think Abbott was gone by the 1995 meltdown in game 163. Maybe no game 163 if he was there all year?
Ah. Great memories

71, sounds like we have about the same tenure. My earliest memories of being an Angel fan was when Fregosi was shipped out of town for some dude named Ryan

Sounds Like you were there too.
I got Tanana’s autograph when he was literally stepping off the bus to report to the Angels for the 1st time.
Us kids there didn’t know him and thought his name was banana.
What a stud he became.
I clearly remember the hyped nationally televised game between him and “the bird” Mark Fidrych.
They were 2 of the best pitchers in the game at that time

What’s crazy is the size of these Dominicans at 15 and 16. MLB is “against steroids”, yet it’s no problem when kids are taking it there to stand out and sign the big contract. They are taking it like candy down there, and we do nothing about it. They’d prefer to tout all these advanced players. It is not a level playing field. Granted they do a great job of developing tools and it’s a total lifestyle down there, but the steroid issue is ignored in the same way Selig ignored it. #firemanfred #cleanuptheacademies

Why have the Dodgers abandoned Kershaw? Is he dun-in? And no Texas rumors either. For 10-12 million he’s a gamble but may still have one last hurrah left in him and would be a great mentor.

A CYA winner not signed, asking price too high?

At this point I would take fliers on a couple on invites to ST like Grichuk, Meadows for OF, Chapman for third, Urshela Utl, and Lorenzen for swingman.

Or are the teams thinking in terms of signing after ST starts to get a lower price? Could be. Still Bellinger, Hader, Montgomery and Snell all still out there is weird, but let the games begin, I guess.

Lorenzen is still floating around? I thought he signed somewhere weeks ago. Yeah, he’s definitely worth a 1-2 year deal.

Grichuk to bolster the OF makes a ton of sense since we have more questions than answers with that group.

The only sure thing is Trout and he can’t stay healthy.

That would be an awkward situation, “Hey Grichuk, we really want you know….as opposed to jettisoning you late in the season…..no for reals….come here and talk to me.”

Perhaps, but Grichuk’s options are probably limited at this stage and he figures to get plenty of playing time in Anaheim.

They jettisoned him 2013 and he got over it. I’m sure he’d be fine coming back here..

However, I think there are better options available for a 4th (5th) outfielder out there. Grichuk’s defensive numbers last year were not so good so I’m not sure how much of an improvement he would be over Moniak/Ward/Adell

Whatever the case, OF is an area of concern.

Trout – Oft-injured & declining.

Moniak – Everyday player or half-season mirage?

Ward – The jury is out until/unless he proves he’s beyond the psychological hurdle of the HBP.

Adell – Thus far, he’s only proven that he’s a .200 hitter with a 40% K rate.

How could I forget that stellar signing !!!

Hopefully he flames out quickly during Spring Training rather than raking, getting an opening day roster spot and then reminding everyone that he can’t hit when the real games start.

Hey G Pa The only way Chapman will be accepting a Spring Training invite is if you attach a $200 million dollar check to it

Maybe? I guess we will have to see the details. Kings hockey was/is carried by Bally’s but the app doesn’t let me poach someone else’s account anymore (netflix like locations services enabled now), so I use a VPN and ESPN+ to get the game.

You have to poach Amazon Prime? I assumed everyone had their own account at this stage since most of us buy random sh*t via Amazon anyway. I think Prime is roughly $99 annually, which is a good deal, frankly.

No, I’m not a paid shill for Amazon though I probably sound like one. Haha

I don’t have to, I chose to. Like a lot of people choose to spend over $200/month on internet/cable/streaming. I down to $50/month and still have access to everything, even Peacocks “exclusive” Dolphins/Taylor Swift game.

I hear you. I only pay for Amazon Prime, Netflix and ESPN+ (for my UFC fix) – approximately $25/month.

I’ll occasionally pay for HBO for a month to binge watch House Of Dragons, etc.

🤓 📚 Kindle showing games would be kool, 2 – 4 – 1 deal. We’ll read all about it. If Bezos wants in, and he’s singing “I’m into something good” 🎶 then there is money in it still.

Amazon has already announced they will be charging more for Prime if you don’t want commercials. Expect a significant additional payment if you want baseball.

Sounds like the Angels are not part of the Amazon package. Will still be Bally’s for us it appears.

per MLBTR:

9:50am: Josh Kosman of The New York Post reports that Amazon is giving Diamond roughly $100MM for the streaming rights of the Tigers, Royals, Marlins, Brewers and Rays. That money and the Sinclair settlement money could be presented to a Houston bankruptcy judge as early as today.

There was no way Stroman was coming here, unless they offered just really, really stupid money. He came right out and said he wanted to play for the Yankees, his home team where he grew up.

So despite being a free agent in 2020 and choosing the Mets and despite being a free agent in 2021 and choosing the Cubs he just realized he’s a life long Yankees fan and couldn’t sign with anyone else ?

🤔

He literally had his agent go to The Yankees and talk to them, and he went public, asking for the Yankees to sign him. He most likely left money on the table, much to the dismay of his agent.

Stroman should have accrued generational wealth at this point to playing for the Yanks probably fulfills some childhood dream. Good for him.
