LA Angels Tuesday News Crash:

Yoshinobu Yamamoto is officially posted. His window of negotiations begins today. Ron Washington talked on a podcast. Shohei Ohtani to the outfield? That should do his throwing elbow a lot of good.

I know how disappointed you all will be, but you can just cross Yerry De Los Santos and Osvaldo Bido off your shopping lists. I know, I know. Game over. Perhaps more significantly, Lance Lynn signed with the Cardinals. Reynaldo Lopez got a three year deal with the Braves. Gilberto Celestino just got a minor league deal with the Pirates while Cole Sulser got his with the Mets.

The owners said that the Athletics can move to Las Vegas. Let’s hope we don’t end up with a Black Athletic Supporter scandal. Admittedly, they don’t need to throw games to be bad.

Zack Britton retired.

Would it be too much to ask Perry to trade Adell and Rengifo along with their stone gloves for some kids that show some promise? Their mis Q’s are as bad as my spelling, but mi spelling doesint cause losses.

Orange County it would appear is the pit stop for asst. coaches to become coaches then move on sometimes to bigger and better positions. Some of our GM’s have gone on to better themselves even for only one year. Maybe that’s why there is a train station so close to the parking lot. 🙂 I hope that they all do exceptionally well.

Will his big brain be able to deal with disgruntled Yankee fans as Stanton strikes out again, as he is carrying a.152 average into the final week of June?

Guillermo “No longer call me Willie” Hernandez passed away at 69.

I had the (mis)fortune of having ST ABs against Hernandez, actually all three turned out incredibly well…..for Hernandez. The story behind asking to be called Guillermo in the latter part of his career always cracks me up.

His sweeper was absolutely unbelievably horrifying.

I think the biggest thing since Perry has been here is his inability to get the secret sauce that makes meh players produce average results. The batters produced 16WAR over the season per bRef . I did my own rudimentary calculations here but there’s no reason you can’t get 24-26 war from the offense/defense with small improvements and of course health. A line up of guys giving you 1 -2.5 war even with a Trout down to 5war over a full season makes this team significantly better.

I think the hires of Ron and EY Sr is specifically for defensive improvements for Schanuel, Adell, Moniak and even Neto who needs to learn how to play less reckless so that he stays in the lineup.

The hiring of Bo Porter is obviously to baby sit Rendon but even if get gets him to be replacement level (1.0-1.5 war) he can be useful.

The combo of Johnny and and Tim Laker (well experienced) is to work on an organizational approach to hitting which is our biggest issue. We all can see it and Ohtani had the guts to say it when he mentioned the consistent Dodgers’ batting approach to him. This is to help guys like Moniak, Adell, Neto and even Rengifo. (Possibly too a Trey Cabbage, Sonny DiCharia, Kyren Paris or Jordyn Adams if they stick around)

Enright and any pitching coaches are obviously here to develop Detmers, Silseth, and Canning and the young guys in the pen.

These moves scream a move to develop the young guys which is finally where they need to be, but criminal that it’s taken 4 years in Perry’s tenure.

That being said hiring Ron Washington is the only reason these guys are coming on board.

I expect that the only major move could be a front line starter but the whole league is looking for pitching. They’ll need another utility IF and possibly another OF , which is why people have been identifying Rosario Candelario, Gurriel or Soler as combinations.

Spot on but I took the liberty of fixing one sentence for you:

These moves scream a move to develop the young guys which is finally where they need to be, but criminal that it’s taken 4 14+ years in Perry’s Arte’s tenure.

Sonny Di had a .223 BA and 8 HR in 2023, he has a .211 BA with 9 HR in MILB. I don’t see him making it to Anaheim.

So, I did a line of hopium this morning, the results are the following:

I believe that IF we can sign two good starters, we can give our young line-up a chance to score and not play ketchup….catsup….catch up all the time. Additionally, a surprise signing, like Lee, could invigorate the line-up. I have hope for 2024, but that may catch a beat down depending on what the Halos sign for 2024.

“The Angels announce they’ve hired Barry Enright as pitching coach. The former Angels pitcher was formerly a coach with the D-Backs under Brent Strom.”

Yeah, remember the Blanton/Hanson and other pitchers signed blitz a few years ago?

Biggest FA signing presser ever, also a bright window dressing on a dark future for the Halos.

Halos reportedly looking at Maeda. Please tag on a team option for a second year, just in case….lightning strikes.

Maeda isn’t good. He wasn’t good years ago. This would not be a worthwhile move. Teams view him as an “innings eater.” I never undertook why having someone pitch many mediocre to bad innings for you was a good idea worth spending money on. At least take guys that have upside. Maeda has basically none.

We need guys that actually get past the fourth inning w/o giving up four or more runs and leaving runners on for a constantly taxed BP. He might be a one-year stop gap signing. All FA signings aren’t going to stop the presses.

OK so how do you define upside and not very good?

Maeda has been injured the last 3 years but was not bad at all last season coming back from TJS in late 2021

While his ERA+ last year was slightly above league average at 102+ his peripherals were fantastic especially compared to his other starters.

His WHIP last year was 1.17. Only Ohtani had a lower WHIP among Angel starters. he struck out 10.1 batters per 9 innings . Again only Ohtani was significantly higher than that among the starting staff. His K/BB ratio of 4.18 bested every pitcher that started for us last year. He still averages over 5 innings a start but career wise hes even better as a reliever so I would much rather have him as a swinger than say Tyler Anderson.

I know hes old I’m. not talking about a 7 year deal here but who would you rather pay 2 years and $26 million to ? Kenta Maeda or Tyler Anderson?

So now that Ohtani is likely gone ,The Angels are linked to an Asian free agent for the first time in 6 years?

This cannot be a coincidence.

When the Halos (failed?) did not sign him to an extension it pretty much assured that he was going to “Test the market,” meaning fly the coop. Add in the futility of the last couple of years and staying in the OC doesn’t seem likely.

Signing Asian players can end up a slightly lower cost than established MLB FA stars. If Ohtani would’ve put up his numbers in MLB the Halos would’ve never signed him to that EXTREMELY team friendly contract. Why do you think Yamamoto isn’t projected to get a 7/$210M contract?

That Korean player Lee looks like a smart signing for us.
