Today we had Lucas Giolito versus Kevin Gausman. That’s a pretty intense pitching match up. The home run ball was the early story, though. Shohei Ohtani hit his 39th and then Matt Chapman hit his 14th.
Danny Jansen also hit his 14th homer to make it 2-1 Toronto in the third inning. That remained the score until the bottom of the sixth inning. Whit Merrifield singled, stole second and reached third on a Matt Thaiss throwing error. Bo Bichette doubled to make the score 3-1. The Angels intentionally walked Vlad Guerrero Jr. and then Andrew Velazquez committed a fielding error in George Springer’s at bat to load up the bases for Matt Chapman. The Angels replaced Lucas Giolito with Jose Soriano. Soriano’s third pitch bonked off the glove of Matt Thaiss and somehow Merrifield did not score from third base. Soriano struck out a couple of guys to ensure no further scoring in the sixth.
In the top of the seventh inning, Mike Moustakas reached on a single, Matt Thaiss walked, and Hunter Renfroe also walked. With the bases loaded and no outs, the Blue Jays replaced Kevin Gausman with Erik Swanson. Trey Cabbage struck out. Swanson grooved a two strike fastball and Cabbage merely fouled it off. Eduardo Escobar pinch hit for Andrew Velazquez and also struck out. Luis Rengifo popped out to right to end the Angels half of the seventh. It was still 3-1 Toronto.
Jose Soriano got the first two Blue Jays out in the bottom of the seventh inning and then Whit Merrifield homered to make it 4-1 Toronto. Bo Bichette followed that with a single. Mercifully, Brandon Belt struck out.
Toronto brought in Tim Mayza to replace Erik Swanson. Shohei grounded out. Moniak struck out. Taylor Ward singled to bring up Mike Moustakas who got an infield hit to short. Matt Thaiss struck out looking on three pitches to earn his hat trick and leave the Angels with only three more outs in the game. The Angels brought in Jacob Webb to face Vlad Guerrero Jr. He got three ground outs in a row from the tough part of the Blue Jays order.
Down by three with three outs left, the Angels faced closer Jordan Romano. Hunter Renfroe hit a fly ball out to right. Trey Cabbage singled on a liner to center field. Eduardo Escobar singled to right. Cabbage made it to second base. Luis Rengifo worked a full count and there was an injury delay involving Jordan Romano, who stayed in the game. He then walked Rengifo to load the bases.
Michael Stefanic came in to pinch hit for Shohei Ohtani. That was not the stupidest thing I ever typed, but it’s up there. Something is obviously going on with Shohei. Stefanic struck out for the second out. Mickey Moniak came up to face replacement pitcher Yimi Garcia. He promptly lined out to second to end the game. The Angels dropped this one 4-1 to the Blue Jays.

Weak, Phil. I expected better
from you.
If you haven’t figured it out by now What Phillip says to the press and what he says to his players and the umpires are two different things
Yea there’s probably not a more publicly different persona in the bigs than No Phil. Guaranteed he gave the club and expletive laced challenge to respond to Chapman. Fullerton Titan brother or not.
While lying through his teeth telling the media everything is copacetic.
Who cares…throw the ball, hit the ball, catch the ball, is all that matters.
Motivation is powerful tool
Unofficial stat according to the interwebs…
If the Angels had some extra fire from “Red Ass Chappy’s” comments last night, it would be the 14,268,221 time in professional sports that has happened.
Eat it Dick Head Chapman
Eat it Canada….go suck on a bag of milk.
Exactly. This is just dumb to focus on this when your team is losing.
Another reason why I love this site. Expanding my vocabulary.
“fine, excellent, going well,” 1919, but it may have origins in 19c. U.S. Southern black speech. Origin unknown; suspects include Latin, Yiddish (Hebrew kol b’seder), Italian, Louisiana French (coupe-sétique), and Native American. Among linguists, none is considered especially convincing. The popularization, and sometimes the invention, of the word often is attributed to U.S. entertainer Bill “Bojangles” Robinson (1878-1949).
Hahahaa. One of my favorite words. Criminally underused
I know. I was being sarcastic. Of course he’s not going to say what he really said to his players.
Waaaaay blown out of proportion .

Well, we will see the managerial chops of Ray Montgomery, I guess. I hope the Angels blow out the Jays tonight for two reasons:
1. F Chapman.
2. So we’re spared for impactful managerial decisions in a close game, like pinch-hitting and bullpen usage.

Neto confirms what we thought. He and everyone on the team is “trying to hit a home run every at bat”
I don’t remember Nevin touching any umpire last night.

Oh he would have if not held back. Thought they were going to come to blows because the blue was chirping back at No Phil
Rendon on the incident
Pushing.wav – Rendon said “We should be more aggressive “I’ve seen more pushing in the Men’s Room!”
Makes sense and am happy to see we are finally using a rehab assignment.
“Brandon Drury said he’s starting a rehab series with SLC this week and hopes to return on Thursday, when the Angels come back to Anaheim.”

That would be fantastic!
As a GM, aside from failing with the pitching for the most part, his biggest whiff was not adding a credible shortstop. Neto proved to be a minor miracle but there is absolutely nothing behind him, and now we are paying the price. We should have gone after Amed Rosario instead of letting the Doyers get him for nothing.
Neto wasn’t a miracle since I suspect the Angels planned on him debuting this year . You forgot about Gio who got the lionshare of shortstop starts earlier in the year before Neto he was the backup plan . No one thought he’d break his pelvis
And David Fletcher who is who washed.
Um… Luis Rengifo, hello? Don’t forget about Phil’s favorite toy
Luis Rengifo is always available. Never underestimate this major factor.
[Rubs eyes]
I’ve seen some “thumbs ups” from 5thStarter below!
Welcome back! The mentions of Haren brought you out of your retirement????
hehehehehehe
DD, why you gotta out 5th lol ?
I noticed his likes yesterday during the gamethread but unlike you i didn’t open my big mouth 😂
Chime is 5th…we need you!!!
Forget Cyborg Ohtani or Brito Neto . This is the biggest story of the day: https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2023/07/bartolo-colon-to-officially-retire-2.html

Yet?
we gotta save Neto from himself. Put the kid on the 15 day
I want back at the jays. Let’s go!!
At least, we don’t have to wait till 7 pm west coast time.
Especially Chapman
Neto is a brittle mess Squid.needs to be thrown back in the lake and Rengifo is a ticking time Bomb. Unless we think Fletch is he answer ( which he hadn’t been for 3 years) Perry needs to fill this void ASAP . Get Anderson from the ChiSox they’re still having a fire sale over there and he’s been a 300 hitter in the past . He could even slide over to second Like he did in the WBC if/when? Neto ever gets healthy . I know he’s had a horrendously down season but he had an OPS around .850 the last 10 games and would solve our problem at lead off once and for all
Good lineup. Shoutout to Ohtani for being a dawg.
Please put Neto on the IL
With the injuries, there’s never a day to keep both Velasquez and Rengifo out of the starting lineup. We desperately need reinforcements/injured players to become uninjured.
Ive been Squid > Fletcher all season, but Squid shouldn’t be allowed back in the starting lineup.
He’s only out there for defense and it’s been shaky. At least Stefanic is a good AB every time.
Same here, but Squid is “better” by default as Fletcher is wawawawashed.
Squid is best suited as a late game replacement & pinch base runner.
This is the confirmed lineup for today?
Confirmed by Jeff Fletcher. Someone is wondering if Sho is a cyborg.

Jeff made a funny….software update😀
How do you know that was a joke?
SOURCE?
😆
I’m assuming that he’s been on continuous IV drips since he was pulled last night.
Ohtani is cognizant of the pivotal nature of these games. Love this dude.
We should be able to get to Manoah before Detmer’s third time through their lineup.
There you go.
We need to rake & rake early & often.
Use your brain Phil…Ohtani day off.
Wtf, that’s an auto L
Luckily Phil didn’t listen to your advice haha
Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm!!!
Biggest game up-to-date, Ohtani wasn’t missing it
Apparently, it was some sort of software update glitch. 😉
He would be in the cage all day anyway might as well bat.
Ump was sickeningly bad yesterday lol
+2.11 runs for TOR and the 3 most impactful missed calls went against us.
Lets get this W today ! Detmers Day babyyyyyy
Crap, this sucks. We’re not good enough to overcome this gross incompetence.
“Just Win Baby!!”
Al Davis in the house!
Interesting, because the dude is quite dead.
Crashing the Gates of Hell.
He was corpse’y looking at the end.
“Just get the calls right, blue!”
That’s above anything that guy can do.
Ohayo!
Isn’t that the state famous for Rock’n Roll Hall of Fame and Drew Carey?
When I joke with my buddy from Yokohama after he says “Ohayo” I answer “Pennsylvania!”
The Angels just played a doubleheader the day before and were facing Toronto’s ace. A win would’ve been a minor miracle.
Yes…a let down was to be expected.
The good thing is the Angels actually had a chance to tie it up in the 9th and potentially win in extras. The bad call on Stefanic really screwed up the momentum.
If you expect to win you got to score some runs!!!
