Who Likes Runs? Postgame

OK. Let’s see how Griffin Canning did today. Let’s see how David Fletcher did today. Let’s see how the Angels did in general today. Well there are a lot of effin’ videos. I guess this game was OK.

Fletcher did deliver a two run single in the second inning. 2-1 Angels.

Taylor Ward grounded into a double play and Shohei Ohtani struck out.

In the third, Mike Trout homered, Brandon Drury homered, and Matt Thaiss Homered all in a row. 5-0 Angels at this point. This is more like the usual way the Angels score their runs. I’ll take the small ball runs earlier provided by Fletcher, though.

Hunter Renfroe walked and Mickey Moniak singled with an Eduardo Escobar ground out in between. Taylor Ward Singled to make it 6-0 Angels.

Shohei Ohtani also had an RBI single. 7-0 Angels.

Brandon Drury singled to score both Taylor Ward and Shohei Ohtani. 9-0 Angels.

Now Matt Thaiss walked and Hunter Renfroe doubled to the right side to drive in three more. 12-0 Angels if you’re keeping score.

Eduardo Escobar also singled to drive in a run. 13-0 Angels.

Mickey Moniak hit the fourth homer of the inning to make it 15-0 Angels. Just your typical Angels third inning. David Fletcher grounded out to end the festivities.

While Exequiel Tovar tripled, the Rockies were not able to score any runs in reply to the Angels offensive explosion.

Taylor Ward singled and Mike Trout singled in the fourth. Brandon Drury hit an RBI single to make it 16-0.

Matt Thaiss made it 17-0 with an RBI single.

Hunter Renfroe doubled again to make it 18-0.

Mickey Moniak then doubled to make it 20-0 Angels.

David Fletcher hit a three run homer to make it 23-0. Dude!

Shohei Ohtani made an out (strikeout) to end the scoring fest in the fourth.

Two Rockies grounded out and Randal Grichuk struck out to bring the Angels back up again in the fifth inning.

While Squid and Drury made outs to start the fifth inning, Matt Thaiss got another hit. Hunter Renfroe also singled to send Thaiss to second. A wild pitch advanced Thaiss to third and Renfroe to second. Eduardo Escobar then hit a fly ball out to end the inning.

Andrew Velazquez is now your center fielder. Mike Trout got the rest of the day off. Padlo and Rengifo also came in as “defensive replacements.” The Rockies failed to score in the fifth.

In the top of the sixth inning Mickey Moniak doubled and David Fletcher singled to put men at first and third with no outs. Taylor Ward grounded into a force out to score Moniak. 24-0 Angels.

A wild pitch sent Taylor Ward to second and Shohei Ohtani grounded out to send Ward to third. Andrew Velazquez struck out to end the inning. The Rockies went three up three down.

Now the Rockies brought in Karl Kauffmann to pitch instead of Noah Davis. Bummer. Luis Rengifo walked. Matt Thaiss grounded into a force out. Huntre Renfroe singled to send Matt Thaiss to second. Kevin Padlo grounded into a double play.

Kolton Ingram replaced Griffin Canning on the mound. Nolan Jones lined out and Randal Grichuk singled on a grounder to left. Harold Castro flied out. Elehuris Montero struck out.

Mickey Moniak doubled to center in the top of the eighth inning. David Fletcher singled to drive Moniak to third. Taylor Ward grounded into a force out to score Moniak. 25-0 Angels.

Shohei Ohtani grounded into a double play to end the Angels half of the eighth inning. Brenton Doyle came up for the Rockies and homered to make it 25-1 Angels. Kolton Ingram struck out a couple of guys and then Coco Montes doubled to left. Jorge Alfaro grounded out to end the threat.

In the ninth, Andrew Velazquez lined out to center. Luis Rengifo flied out to left. Matt Thaiss flied out to center. Tucker Davidson came in for the non-save. Nolan Jones struck out swinging. Randal Grichuk flied out to short. Harold Castro struck out swinging to end the game.

The Angels won this one overwhelmingly. So much for the Saturday curse!

Same here. This is a good opportunity to not only keep the hot hand(s) in the lineup, but it allows Moniak to face LHP and if he can pass this test, we really have something….

I guess Nevin was not too pleased that we could not hold shut out, missing the modern day record of 25-0 game.

This is actually very bad news. Since it means Moore had a setback . We really needed him to stabilize the 7th and/or 8th inning. With Devo struggling and our lack of viable high leverage LHP, this also means way more Poup in our lives then we need to be subjected to.

Second degree abdominal muscle strain usually requiring 6-8 weeks and his last outing being on May 23, I thought it was little too premature for Angels to have him start throwing. As I posted earlier, I don’t expect him to be back before ASG. And you are correct in us suffering Loupie scary moments for a while longer.

No shit, I’m still pissed about giving up a run. I remember once watching the Dodgers smoke the Padres 19-0. The zero just makes it feel much more of a smoke job.

Devenski did not biff the force out at second that could have been an inning ending double play ( or the ground ball out that our third baseman did face plant right next to as the ball rolled into left field a play earlier)

I suspect thats one reason why neither players been in the starting line up the last 2 days

Perry has provided Phil with plenty of cards to mix & match and it’s up to Phil to deal said cards effectively. I’d assume that the hot hand is going to largely dictate who (whom?) plays.

And we have Moore,
Rendon & Neto on the cusp.

Good times.

Who’s bags are being packed? Rengafo, Squid? We need Squid at SS, even though he’s not playing good defense there right now. Are they actually going to go with one less pitcher? Part ways with the seldom used Tucker? Send down Ingram?

Moore will be back soon (hopefully), wait until till then to get rid of the pitcher?

Thinking Rengafo is on the move, and they will try to trade him. Maybe Moose will need to wait a day or two unless they get rid of a pitcher.

Without knowing what MRI exactly showed on Neto the day after his oblique strain, I am not 100% sure, but it is probably safe to assume that he will not be back until after ASG and more likely toward the end of next month, seeing how careful Angels have been with Moore, who I think will be also held until after ASG break. I anticipate Rendon will be the first one to be back, likely this upcoming week.

Davidson is occupying a spot while being perhaps the worst player on the 26 man roster. I could see him going.

Rengifo still might get the nod over Squid, but injuries can & will happen and that tends
to guide decision making.

Perry will wait for some injury rash to hit some team and move Rengifo for some minor pieces or toss him in with others for a larger nugget. That’s my take.

Was really hoping the modern day record of most runs scored by 1 team in a game would have been broken. 23 runs after 4 innings, thought there was a great shot, especially in Coors. Team record is ok but wanted history. Once Phil started to dump his bench, I suspected the opportunity was gone..

Ward LF
Ohtani DH
Trout CF
Drury 2B
Renfroe RF
Escobar 3B
Moose 1B
Wallach C
Fletch SS

Let’s make a bunch of new records today, Angels!

I dont Moustakas will start with a lefty on the bump. And Velaquez dating back to last year has been hitting Lefties pretty solid.

With Tyler Anderson on the mound you’re going to want your best defense out there.

Plus I suspect Mous is pretty tired from the jet lag.

We gave Walsh plenty of ABs to prove he is not just a platoon split, failed. Moniak needs a 200-300 ABs against lefties so we can find out if he is tapping into his No. 1 draft selection powers. His MILB history indicates he might be challenged.

Don’t know why, but my phone this morning was displaying WBC Columbia vs Mexico game which took place just before this season started. Urshela was a starting 3B for Columbia, flashing good leather. I don’t know if playing in WBC added more stress on the Columbian, but Rendon’s frequent and prolonged IL did not help, either, leading to his eventual unfortunately season ending injury.

However, just like Thaiss and Wallach’s unexpected performance alleviated the pain from loss of O’Hoppe, the combination of Escobar and Fletch yesterday was a sensational success to produce another psychological analgesics for Urshela’s absence. Hopefully, the medicine’s effectiveness will last long enough to have Moore, Neto, and Rendon to be back healthy.

Switching dugouts has happened before, plenty of times but rare. Always brings me back to the day Joel Youngblood in 1982 got a hit for 2-different teams, Mets and Expos, in the same day after being traded. A record never to be be broken.

Believe it or not Canning’s ERA is now under 4.00. After last night’s win he is sitting right at 3.99. Nice.

Quite a progression for him — let’s hope he keeps the progression up. He’s beginning to look like he could be a legit Number 3 starter.

Yes, and since we have (for now) Ohtani, Sandoval and Detmers, we only ‘need’ him to be a 4.

I still want to get another starter (or two) to displace Anderson and Davidson, and leaving Barria to be long-relief out of the pen. Wishful thinking?

JackFrost

Agree with the addition… Sandy has been disappointing and not near a real Number 2 starter. I’d like to see us add a guy who could be considered a high 3 if not a lower end number 2 starter..

Kiyotchan

Looking ahead to projected starters for White Sox series being Detmers/Ohtani/Barria/Sandoval. If they keep 6 man rotation, then Canning/Anderson/Detmers for Arizona series, Ohtani/Barria/Sandoval for Padres series, Canning/Anderson for Doyers. Because of All Star break, Nevin can consider conversion to 5 man rotation, skipping Barria for Padres series->Ohtani/Sandoval/Canning. July 6 being off day, Detmers/Ohtani (or Anderson/Detmers) for Doyers is still possible. I would love to see both Detmers and Ohtani to have opportunities to avenge their recent losses to Doyers despite pitching gems.
