Agony of Defeat Postgame

Today we started out with Reid Detmers versus Cal Quantrill. Did Reid turn it around? He did reasonably well. The Angels scored a bunch. The Guardians scored a bunch off of Andrew Wantz and Ryan Tepera. Too many!

Inning 1:

Happy birthday Mickey Moniak who led off the game with a homer!

Mike Trout hit a fly ball for an out. Shohei Ohtani struck out. Anthony Rendon grounded out to third. 1-0 Angels. For the Guardians, Steven Kwan led off with a double. Ahmed Rosario singled but Kwan was held at third. Jose Ramirez struck out but Ahmed Rosario simultaneously stole second base. Josh Bell hit an ostensible sac fly but Hunter Renfroe gunned down Rosario at third base. He did it so fast that the issue arose of whether Kwan reached home plate before the third out at third. The Guardians’ challenge of the play at third failed so therefore there were three outs. The inning ended with no Guardian score after some uncertainty. 1-0 Angels. Rendon’s tag was also pretty good.

Inning 2:

Hunter Renfroe came up and singled. Brandon Drury and Gio Urshela both hit fly ball outs. Matt Thaiss grounded out to second. For the Guardians, Josh Naylor singled. Gabriel Arias struck out. Andres Gimenez grounded into a force out, but was too fast to be doubled up. Myles Straw also hit into a force out to end the inning.

Inning 3:

Zach Neto made out on a fly ball to right. Mickey Moniak walked. He stole second base without a throw during Mike Trout’s at bat. Mike Trout then got drilled on the left elbow. He stayed in the game, but damn! Shohei Ohtani made the Guardians pay with a nice double to left that scored Moniak. 2-0 Angels.

Anthony Rendon sacrificed Mike Trout in to make it 3-0 Angels.

Hunter Renfroe flied out. For the Guardians, Cam Gallagher struck out. Steven Kwan grounded to third and the throw to first was off line. The scorer called it a hit. Ahmed Rosario then hit into a double play.

Inning 4:

Brandon Drury doubled to left to lead off the fourth inning. Gio Urshela hit one to short and while
Rosario threw to first Drury went ahead and ran around him to third. Doh! Matt Thaiss struck out. Zach Neto grounded out to third. For the Guardians, Jose Ramirez doubled. Josh Bell walked and Reid Detmers picked off Ramirez at second. Josh Naylor lined out to Mike Trout. Gabriel Arias lined out to Hunter Renfroe.

Inning 5:

Mickey Moniak hit a lead off single. Mike Trout hit into a fielder’s choice. Shohei Ohtani walked. Anthony Rendon hit into a double play to end the Angels half of the fifth inning. Andres Gimenez lined out to Anthony Rendon. Myles Straw hit a fly ball out to Mike Trout. Cam Gallagher grounded out to third.

Inning 6:

Hunter Renfroe flied out to left field. Brandon Drury singled to right. Gio Urshela popped out to right. Matt Thaiss walked. Zach Net popped out to first base. Steven Kwan walked and then stole second. Ahmed Rosario doubled to score Kwan.. 3-1 Angels. Chris Devenski came in to replace Detmers. Jose Ramirez hit a fly ball to advance Rosario to third. Devenski threw a wild pitch to score Ahmed Rosario. 3-2 Angels. Josh Bell and Josh Naylor both struck out.

Inning 7:

Mickey Moniak singled to lead off the seventh inning. Mike Trout popped out to right. Shohei Ohtani struck out. Mickey Moniak stole another base during Luis Rengifo’s at bat. (Anthony Rendon had left the game with left groin tightness.) He scored on a single by Rengifo. Rengifo made it to second on a really crap throw.

Cam Gallagher was awarded with a throwing error. Hunter Renfroe struck out. 4-2 Angels. For the Guardians, Gabriel Arias walked to lead the inning off. Andres Gimenez popped up into a double play by Zach Neto. Very nice! Myles Straw struck out.

Inning 8:

Brandon Drury grounded out to short. Gio Urshela was out on a fly ball to right. Matt Thaiss reached on a fielding error by the Guardians shortstop. Zach Neto homered to left. 6-2 Angels.

Mickey Moniak struck out to end the Angels half of the eighth inning. Will Brennan pinch hit for Cam Gallagher. It was a long at bat but he eventually hit a fly ball to Mike Trout for an out. Steven Kwan singled to Hunter Renfroe. Ahmed Rosario singled toward Trout. Jose Ramirez got an RBI hit to make it 6-3 Angels. Josh Bell singled on a grounder to right to make it 6-4 Angels. At this point Andrew Wantz was pulled in favor of Ryan Tepera. Within two pitches Josh Naylor hit a three run homer off of Ryan Tepera to make it 7-6 Guardians. David Fry struck out. Andres Gimenez homered as well. 8-6 Guardians. Myles Straw walked. Will Brennan came back up and had a pitch clock violation for a ball. Myles Straw stole second base during this at bat. Brennan grounded out to Drury. The Guardians were held to a mere six runs this inning. No problem!

Inning 9:

Mike Trout struck out for the first out. Shohei Ohtani grounded out to second base. Luis Rengifo was the Angels last hope. He walked to keep the game alive. Hunter Renfroe hit a liner to left field and Rengifo made it to third. Brett Phillips came in to pinch run for Renfroe. He stole second base during the Brandon Drury at bat. Drury grounded out to third to end the game. Sorry folks!

Here’s chatGPT generated haiku about ryan tepera:

Tepera, oh no!
ERA reached for the sky,
Angels said, “Bye, bro!”

The world is a better place with Tepera no longer of the roster. Now he can become the best reliever in baseball elsewhere.

Randazzo apparently got picked to MC this broadcast. Watching pregame show and Randazzo was on the field with someone I did not recognize. It was not Gubi.

Gubi is with the broadcast. Randazzo is pretty smooth, but he makes a few statements during broadcast that makes me anxious. He sounded that Angels win was already in the bag after Neto’s two run homer yesterday. And as you know, it was not.

I said anyone with major league stuff is better. Your reading comprehension is worse than Tepera’s pitching.

A lot of us were thinking that this would happen. I thought it was a good signing at the time but relievers are a crap shoot. Hopefully they can sort it out.

I am somewhat intrigued. Today’s game is the first time Angel’s game is on Peacock. I get free access because I have the basic plan with Xfinity, but for cord cutters, one must pay $4.99 monthly to watch this game. I do not know if they still have free trial period. As most of you, I am quite upset with MLB decision to give exclusive rights to broadcast certain games to Apple and now Peacock (NBC) where one must pay some monthly fee even if he or she has already subscribed and paid for MLB.TV.

I predicted this lineup yesterday after Trout got hit by pitch in his left elbow and leg. I do not know if he was scheduled to be off, but I am certain Rendon’s groin strain was unexpected. Will miss his relatively steady at bats and concerned how long he will be out of lineup. What options do Angels have for a third baseman if he is to go on IL?

I do not like that Angels have to play really early this morning, but I like the fact that I get to watch Angels game first thing on Mother’s Day Sunday. (Happy Mother’s Day to all mothers in the world!) My Mother’s Day wish is that Angels score a lot of runs first to relieve pressure from Sandoval and get stress free win today.

3B is Urshella. They have players who can play anywhere on the IF. Maybe bring Fletch back up? 🤣

Many of us like David Fletcher especially at 2nd base. He is such a high IQ player and gets along well with everyone on the team. Probably one of the best friends for Shohei. If we do not have to expect much from Fletch offensively, then I would welcome the move.

Ideally, Jared Walsh comes back but let’s let him adjust to being in a batters box first and make sure he is able to sleep again

We are wasting Mickey Moniak’s prime.

Tepera. dear dear Ryan. I think you are just about out of rope buddy. You went out on your “get right mystery ailment session”. Came back and looked ok for about 30 seconds. Now you cost us another game here. Third week of April? Ok. Second week of May? Not so much. I think it may be time for the eyes of the platypus to start looking for your replacement on the roster. Please enjoy your money, but I think you may be cooked here.

Remember how angry some of you were when Wantz was not around? I do. Though this was probably a fluke for him… I hope. Mike Trout. I loaf him. He has amazing skills. He still kinda looks like crap… probably the best crap ever, but still crap.

We didn’t collapse after the pen prolapse. Almost came back. That’s good. Gotta turd the page and win tomorrow.

Angry? Tired of this team XYZ&ME? Gonna had enough and stuff? No more watching or commenting? Sounds good. Please do.

What a frustrating loss.

You know of instances of the team having no business winning certain games? This is the game that the Angels have no business losing. But they lost anyway.

Wow, I really thought we had a pretty decent rotation preseason. Now it seems we have an ace and about 6 or 7 number 4 or 5 type pitchers.

I can’t imagine that the hitters like putting up 5+ runs and blowing late leads, and I would guess that even the most stoic player is susceptible to finger pointing. Hopefully the clubhouse isn’t in complete shambles

They’ve lost games before. If they win some games they’ll be fine. If they were that easy to crack they wouldn’t be where they are. Wantz and Tepera are probably mad at themselves enough for everyone.

WTF is with all the 2 inning appearances by our pen this year? In all my years of watching baseball I don’t feel like I’ve ever really seen this before.

We are crushing guys arms when they play and then they’re shut down for a day or two afterwards. Which leads to having to pitch Loupera in high leverage situations. Not to mention two of the guys in the pen are long relievers that only get used situationally. Bullpen management and strategy seems so fucked to me.

I’m seeing a lot of Wantz hate on here tonight but why the hell was he asked to throw 40 pitches?

I think it started when Detmers was allowed back to pitch in the 6th inning, and Cleveland had a single by Kwan (who I like because he played for Oregon State and won College World Series) subsequently scored with a double by Rosario. Devenski came in to replace Detmers, and Cleveland was able to advance Rosario with a productive out with sacrifice fly and he went on to score with a wild pitch/passed ball. You could argue Devenski should have replaced Detmers after Kwan’s single. Wantz came in the seventh inning, and I think he allowed a lead off walk, but thanks to Neto’s amazing over the head catch which he bubbled but ended up doubling up the first base runner. Wantz returned in the 8th inning and you know the rest. If Phil could do this again, I bet he would have chosen Barria, who is probably much more stable than Tepera. I do not know what the status of Moore was, but if he were available, I think Phil would have put Moore in before Tepera. I read that the Angels club house post game was eerily quiet.

Moore was probably not available because, surprise surprise, he pitched two innings the night before.

Maybe Devenski could have gone in the 7th – pushing everyone back. Wantz probably shouldn’t be pitching muliple innings often – it seems Barria, Silseth and Devenski are better in that role. Wantz, Moore, and Estevez seem good with a single inning, even higher leverage.

I must be missing something here….

Why is Nevin putting Tepera in in the 8th inning of a game that we have a chance to win?

Tepera hasn’t earned this.

He’s not an 8th inning pitcher.

Not last year; not this year.

Nevin says he has confidence in Loup and Suarez, so he keeps putting them out there.

It sure feels that the team would have be more competitive if Nevin exercised better bullpen management and judgement.

The post-game radio feed, Terry and Mark were frying the pitching moves in the 8th. Nice to hear some real critiques when deserved.versus Gubi and the Angel red lipstick he wears.

He kinda has to say that stuff. Like some of you guys with your kids. He also has a very limited number of arms to use so he can’t just lock them in a closet. Again, kind of like some of you guys’ kids.
