LA Angels Monday News Crash: DIY Links!

Hidey ho, Halos fans. The Angels topped off the weekend by splitting a set with the Seattle Mariners. They were helped by some terrific pitching performances, including Reid Detmers’ 7-strong innings yesterday.

Today’s thread will be a DIY, so please share any informative, insightful links in the comments below.

Reading the JP Craawford piece on MLBTraderumors had me thinking, could trader Jerry think about unloading him?

I had to pull up the trade simulator to see what fits.

Angels get JP Crawford 38.2 value
Mariners get Fletcher and Ward 38.9 value

Rengifo gets the 2B position, we solve our SS issue.

Now I wish we still had Marsh but Adell, Trout, Moniak, would be the start. But I feel like we could go after a FA OF easier than getting into the bidding war for SS next year.

Does this work? Gritch, am I way off base here?

Are you joking???

I would rather have Fletch alone over Crawford, and certainly Ward alone way over him.

Why in the hell would I trade both?

This kind of thing is why I totally disregard the trade simulator stuff..

Remember when Arte was a total piece of shit who loved money more than winning because he wouldn’t pay more than the Cubs for Jason Heyward?

I do.

I also remember when a smaller % of people around here got so thirsty for free agent juices that they were pissed Arte didn’t care enough about winning to sign Kris Bryant. That would have been so championish if he had.

There were people that actually wanted him to sign Heyward? Good thing he signed with the cubs, that was like paying for a range rover.

Dude, there was strait up CtPG style runny mascara, “this org is a joke” rage over it. Why do ya think all the dull pointing around here’s such a friggin joke to me? Since about 2006 it’s some variant of the same conniption all day every day over everything…. which is why the gods hate our team.

Heyward I was never high on even that offseason. Glad we didn’t go there.

But Arte defiantly refusing to raise his offer on Adrian Beltre to like $80M when Beltre wanted to play here outweighs all the goodwill of not signing Heyward, JA Happ, Keuchel etc.

IMO it was the inflection point of his entire ownership because of the chain reaction of transactions that resulted due to the void Beltre would have filled (Wells, Pujols, Hamilton probably do not happen if Beltre was on the payroll)

A defensive wizard center fielder with an underwhelming bat will be a free agent.

Possible replacement for our defensive wizard with an underwhelming bat? Probably a lateral move WAR wise although Marsh has upside remaining and KK does not.

However, if you can have the same defensive value on the grass and a catcher who can actually hit in the lineup that’s an improvement.

Has a $13M Club Option which I would not exercise. A better option to me is Brandon Nimmo. This team cannot afford to keep rolling out below par bats. More of the same, right?

Next years FA OFs are very subpar. Perry needs to trade his way. Use Rocket City or whatever, team needs to win.

This team can not afford to ever pay for an above average bat again.

The Rays will 100% buy out that option and he’ll be a free agent next year. Coming off injury, KK will cost a fraction of that $13 million.

But if he can provide solid defense in CF with an OPS+ even close to his career 90, he’d be more than replacing what Marsh gave us this year.

I like the idea, up to a point. Good defensive 4th OF is really valuable, BUT he definitely should not be a starter.

But that also means we need at least another “starting” OF.

My main goal is to get Trout out of center.

KK’s career splits vs. righties: .247/.310/.425. That’s considerably better than we got from Marsh this year and right about league average.

Trout in one corner, Ward in another, KK in CF against most righties.

Adell, Trout, Ward vs. lefties

Occasionally Trout at DH so Adell, KK, Ward.

I think that’s great news. I like what I have seen from Moniak so far. Of course with the disclaimer that it is only SSS.

If Trout isn’t coming back, I wouldn’t mind seeing the rest of the season have a starting OF of Adell-Moniak-Ward. Might as well evaluate if the team is set on OF so they can focus on other things in the offseason.

Exactly.

Neither Adell or Moniak has gotten a couple of straight months worth of big league time. That’s what I want to.

Time to let them get out there and have some success, some failures, and see how they adapt to each.

Good post. The trade Trout comments are sadly about as accurate as the trade Albert post once were. Unless Trout is once again stellar for an extended period the Angels are married to that $35.4mm hit as well given his recent injury history. Personally I’d like to see them pull an Erstad with him and move him to first base. He’s a stellar athlete but perhaps needs to be protected from himself given his frame and style of play. Pretty certain I’ll get roasted for these takes though 🙂

Walter Johnson. Along with Christy Mathewson these two guys are like long lost semi-folk heroes that are victims of incredible recency bias. I have heard talk show twats basically write Johnson off when comparing him to frggin CC Sabathia.

But he’s such an interesting guy. No one can prove how hard he threw, but everyone said for decades he threw harder than anyone ever has accept maybe Bob Feller. His mechanics were weird. He played for the Washington Senators. He was a pretty mellow guy. So he kind of just fades into the mists of history and, since he played before integration etc people act as though he’d never faced competition as withering as Josh Gibson and Cool Papa Bell. But he did. And he made them look silly. He’s a prime example of who I think of when I hear that “PLAYER” would be a massive HOF star if he played in 1921… maybe, but I’m not 100% certain.

I won’t list them here, but if you see his stats, and then imagine he was a Yankee, he’d be the greatest pitcher ever by a country mile. If you’re bored, take a look at this short video on how Johnson was basically so good, even compared to modern pitchers, that it makes no sense. If you want to see some footage of his weird pitching, we got that here. This is also kind of cool. Colorized footage of Senators spring training with Johnson as manager throwing with some of his pitchers…. but it’s cool to see the drills, etc that all these old timey players were doing, etc. I watch all these pitchers, see their bodies, how they throw, and think to myself “All of these guys could basically throw 300 innings back then. Andrew Heaney can’t throw 100. When Max Scherzer pitches 180 innings he’s a “warrior”. Yup. “

It’s hard to believe that the Big Train threw that hard with his funky 3/4 arm delivery.

With that arm motion…. imagine how much that ball must have moved, it was also likely a very “heavy” fast ball too.

Hey CoachDad. Ever wondered what the difference is between complaining about coaches and what coaches actually do? No?

Well, want to see lots of cool stuff about what they teach at Driveline? Here’s a ton of interesting videos on everything from arm health maintenance to recognizing pitches, etc. You can then go ahead and play like this is all stuff you’ve known all along and have been successfully preaching to all the SEC and MLB players you’ve personally mentored over the years…

Ahh yes. Steven Duggar, Texas castoff. Another dumpster dive by Perry. “Between San Fran and Texas, he’s hit .189/.241/.245, wRC+ of 39, striking out in 48.3% of his plate appearances on the year.”

He should fit right in to this pathetic team.

I’m good with another year or so. I think his entire system requires a deep, homegrown bullpen and he’s a year away from having that based on what I’m seeing in AA.

That will coincide with the Tepera and Loup contracts, both of which looked good when they were signed, falling off the books.

I think that, when a team is really really really screwed up and full of evil, the way people describe it multiple times per day on my favorite Angels site, then it’s only fair and totally realistic to demand that a new GM fix it all in a year and a half. If he doesn’t, then obviously the plan was to never fix anything at all and said GM needs to be fired because a POBO and his completely different skill set will be what will fix everything.

I don’t see why they couldn’t. I believe the only downsides are 1) they need to have room on the 40-man roster when he is activated and 2) they can’t put him back on the IL next season for the same injury.

I think they have to take him off the 60 day IL during the off-season and back on the 40 man

Players come off the IL during the off-season regardless (because of the rule 5 draft), but a player that ended the season on the IL is eligible to go back on the IL on opening day.

If Rendon is activated to serve his suspension at the end of this season, he won’t be eligible to be placed back on the IL on opening day unless he suffers a new injury.

Pete Rose always felt he was better than everyone around him. The only commitments he ever made were to himself. A Commissioner allows PED’s use and now PED users are in the Hall of Fame and the Commissioner that allowed it to happen is in the Hall. Another Commissioner allowed sign stealing to go unpunished and the cheaters are still in the game.
I have always believed that Selig was a slim ball and gave used car salesman a bad name. He did more harm to the game than good. I believe that about his handpicked successor also. Pete Rose was always a slimeball and top-notch liar. I have also always believed that that Pete Rose should not go into the Hall of Fame. But MLB endorses gambling now and the MLBHOF allows cheaters, so how is it that Pete Rose and his character flaws is on the outside looking in?

I have no use for the HoF and will never attend again. The straw that broke the Camel’s Back was “Poppi”. Shoeless Joe had no idea what he agreed to in 1919, but was showed no leniency, but he was barred from the game and all other cheater’s except Rose are allowed to play and retire and except for 2 PED users, all others are to be looked upon with reverence, go figure.
