Of the names we expected to see moved, Brandon Marsh was not one of them. However, according to Jeff Passan, the bearded flash is on his way to the City of Brotherly Love.
Logan O’hoppe, a catcher in AA will be the return for Marsh.
Stay tuned for further updates and analysis.
Update: Logan O’Hoppe is having a great season in AA, hitting .275 and carrying a lofty .392 on base percentage. There’s some pop in that bat too, as evidenced by the .888 OPS. He’s 22 years old and should be in the bigs as early as next year.
MLB had O’Hoppe rated the third best prospect in the Phillies organization. Here’s a bit of a scouting report on him.
O’Hoppe was honored with the Sportsmanship Award in the Arizona Fall League as the player other players most liked to work with. That’s a very important trait in a catcher and continues Perry Minasian’s goal of creating a good clubhouse.
I wish Marsh the best. I thought he’d patrol center and let Trout move to a corner. But if O’Hoppe is what he’s supposed to be, this will be a win for all involved.
How can anyone be surprised with todays decisions from the Angels powers that be. This revolving door of negligence just continues to accelerate on this unbelievable downhill skid. The only way through this horror show that currently resides under the big A is the dream that Arte finally sells the team to some actual baseball people.
or dream that Arte expands payroll
Go Padres!
and take the chargers with you.
I wish we would’ve traded Adell and not Marsh, but what value…..
awful trade! SAD!
yeah, yeah, yeah…..
Two absolute powerhouses to north and south both with strong front offices. I wonder how that translates in the off season? Angels billboards hung in LA fall a little flat when they are hanging championship flags up at their stadium.
Unless we were on Hos’ No Trade list , why the hell couldn’t we have done this move? https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2022/08/padres-trade-eric-hosmer-red-sox.html#comments
So Perry’s two big FA moves this offseason were signing Iggy and Thor.
6 months later, he has traded them both away.
This looks bad, even to the casual fan who doesn’t sit here like us analyzing every single thing.
Phillies fans now happy with today. They see it as O’Hoppe and Moniak for Thor and Marsh…which is what it is, isn’t it?
The call is coming from inside the house.
Well, if the owner doesn’t care, and the front office doesn’t care, why should I?
Wish they would just speak the evil by announcing the start of a rebuild and get on with it.
Jesse Chavez and A prospect for duracell? Salary dump move?
Nothing but minor league cast offs and a few super stars that are hurt. Feel bad for Ohtani as it would have been the decent/smart thing to trade him now.
Raisel gone??
Quite gone. I guess Loup is probably closer now, presuming the Angels ever have another lead in the ninth.
let’s recap:
Iggy for salary relief.
Thor for a Hail Mary
Marsh for a solid prospect.
Two giveaways and one “wait and see”.
With Iggy’s salary gone, do we extend Ohtani? Or do we wait til the last possible moment to make a decision?
Marsh was more than a solid prospect. That was a downgrade move.
agree
Tend to as well but he has looked really bad and I have been questioning my early read on him. Thought he was the cf of the future.
He had not yet peaked
Hope he does well. I really like that guy.
Not even close. Hated this trade tbh
Wait til you see him tearing it up 2 years from now.
I had thought we kept Iggy, and was a little glad. Now I see I was wrong.
I’m not sure this sends a good message, trading Iggy. If it was just to save money, and we aren’t contending next year anyway, why was it so important to save $16MM instead of having a closer?
He hasn’t been a closer this year. Lots of blown saves
I have not been agreeing with you lately, but here I do…
Closers are volatile and Iggy still has good stuff. Who closes in 2023 ??
Chris Rodriguez if we decide he can’t stay healthy enough to be a starter
If he can’t stay healthy as a 7th inning guy what makes you think he’ll stay healthy as our Closer ??
He got hurt as a starter. He’s only played a handful of games in the bullpen in his career
Hmmm. Not the way I remember it.
Pretty sure he was coming out of the pen when he went down with the injury.
Hope this doesn’t turn into another one sided messed up trade for the Halos.
I still think Marsh can be a good hitter. He came up with a good feel for the strike zone and completely regressed.
I believe he’ll end up a .280 hitter.
He has some work to do and has shown to be vulnerable to high stuff.
Iglesias traded to Braves
salary dump. Chavez is 38 (useful, though) and Davidson….well…26 years old, 13 walks in 15 innings.
He will be excellent with them.
Just watch.
if we got Moniak and Sanchez for Thor, and if it was a bidding war, I would think Toronto’s offer was really terrible.
My brother suggested that Angels could have got have gotten the prospect haul the Padres gave up for Ohtani. My response was Arte doesn’t care about wins except at the turnstiles and Japanese ad dollars.
oh just shut up.
No, do the math on Ohtani. Great guy, player and draw that most likely ends up elsewhere. Let’s see in a year if I was correct.
*Japanese ad yen.
Well, this was a very underwhelming trade deadline. It is very difficult being an Angel fan. Love the team, hate the people that run it. I wonder if other organizations do not bother dealing with the Angels because of Arte’s history of handling negotiations. Either way, thank you to the people that run this website and dealing with our frustrations of a lousy season.
I might be wrong because why not? But I’m gonna give Perry an F for his work today.
Today? How about his Angel career? Pitching and Run Prevention…
Thought Marsh trade was an excellent return. Iglesias was salary dump that made sense. Thor was the one I thought we’d get a better prospect return for.
