2022 MLB Draft thread

The 2022 MLB draft kicks off today with the first round airing live at 4PM. In case you need a rundown on how this works and who picks where, click here.

Our own Turk’s Teeth did a great primer for CtPG.

Expect the Angels pick to come in between 5 and 6 PM.

Post all your (over) reactions to that lick and all the others here.

I was being a little snarky yesterday when I said it looked like the Angels analytics dept was just sorting amateur player tables by single rate stats, but I dunno. It kinda looks like that!

Well if you have little faith in the coaching abilities of your own system, you better draft players that already know how take a walk and hit a bomb.

Interesting. I would have thought it would have been the other way around. https://twitter.com/TaylorBlakeWard/status/1549512006763368448

I’m cynical. I think they meant to draft Casey and accidentally drafted Caden. I could be wrong.

I am kinda surprised we had no CA draftees this year.

Housing is too expensive. We cant afford to pay our scouts the going wage here.

That Gavin Turley guy sure dropped a long way… I wonder why we didn’t grab him. His description seems to fit right what Perry likes…

I think he’s going to college…. OSU… the other OSU… but still orange and black.

I wonder why someone picked him at all… is it just to take the off chance that they will somehow convince him to bail on college? I can’t think of any other benefit.

So…. Oklahoma State pitchers and Michael Hermosillos? Mostly kidding, who knows if any of these late draft guys will be any good. Looks like PTP wants pen arms and a 4th OF who doesn’t look lost and might hit over .200 pretty desperately.

Dana brothers – one high schooler and one college. Interesting.

Saw that. Always reeks of laziness to me when I see that. As if a scout went to one school, liked a few names, submitted them, called it a day and hit the bars. Job well done.

It would be cool if we could ask some guy in the org “what’s up with the Okla St arms?”. Is it that we have one scout and he lives in Stillwater? Is it that a guy who worked with Dylan Axelrod is now the Cowboys pitching coach and those guys are theoretically easier to grade and train up? Does Perry just like the color orange?

But alas, our team isn’t one of those MLB teams that comes out and tells the entire world what they are thinking and feeling and doing all the time the way good orgs do it.

They just drafted Caden Dana’s brother Casey as well. That’s a new way of putting the pressure on to sign – keep the family together.

PTP sure loves them Cowboys. This is the third pitcher we’ve taken from the OSU staff in this year’s draft. https://www.mlb.com/video/2022-draft-bryce-osmond-rhp?t=mlb-draft

I really do suspect this is a partly a consequence of their lack of area scouts and cross-checkers post-pandemic. They go back to the same well rather often.

Caden Dana is Baby Thor, and a similar prep play (though different talent profile) to the Mason Albright late round draft last year. Depending on your prospect list, he’s a 2nd-4th round talent – a top 100 guy per Baseball America.

They must have some sense they can sign him if they took him first out of the gate today. It would go some small way toward ameliorating the loss of the 2nd rounder if they did.

Finally drafted a catcher. Yeah. Why does Arte hate catchers?

I think that is the guy that says PR on the chart. I saw that and didn’t know what column that was under, and thought why on earth are the Angels drafting a Pinch Runner?

But he’s a Puerto Rican Catcher. We all know those guys are terrible.

12th round pick Jared Southard has already tweeted thanks but no thanks.

That could change but for now he’s sticking with college ball

Don’t let facts get in the way. This is a fantastic chance for us web-GMs to declare how stupid the guy with an actual job with an actual baseball FO is.

If you only knew how successful I’ve run my fantasy football team for decades……and of course the differences in the 2 are very small…..so I feel ok in judging MLB Front Offices..

I’m speechless… more harm to our farm. Why would we burn a pick on a guy who already knew he wasn’t interested? No effort to check first?
I know that 12th round isn’t a massive loss, but still it is a pick.

Well looky here we drafted a high school pitcher. Unfortunately it looks like he still has his original UCL. https://www.mlb.com/video/2022-draft-caden-dana-rhp?t=mlb-draft

I just watched some video of him… looks good for a 11th rounder, but we will probably have to overpay him to get him to skip college.

I hate this draft because obviously Arte made PTP draft Neto instead of PLAYER because Neto is cheaper, also drafting player instead of PLAYER and also PLAYER but not player shows how cheap Arte is because of a lack of flux capacitor Fibonaccies within the ganglia and data. POBO… more than just a great sandwich.

They went all-in on power arms and power bats on Day Two.

Lots of red flags on every player – injuries, age, track record. A lot of single-tool upside players, with heavy flameout potential. But in a system with little power across the board, it’s an interesting upside strategy.

Also a strategy best taken in a system with a strong development culture and good medical staff – neither of which the Angels possess.

Could it be an attempt to grab high upside guys in effort to use for trades? So if they show early promise, use as package. It could turn bad, but if turns out good, then great. I concur Angels who have encountered guys with injury problems, usually turns out bad. Though I do believe they drafted Clevinger who had injury woes and dumpd in early and look how that turned out…

I give this franchise too much credit sometimes but the past 2 drafts feel like course corrections for the system as a whole (low on pitchers? ALL PITCHERS. No ceiling guys? ONLY CEILING GUYS)

If Minasian survives to the next draft I wonder if it will just be a straight forward normal affair with him feeling like he re-balanced things…..or will every year be some wild reaction.

I mean, could you make the argument he’s currently the hardest-throwing human being on the planet? (The fastest fastball in MLB this year was “only” 103.) That’s worthy of some excitement, whatever his imperfections are as a pitcher.

Both Joyce and the reliever from Oklahoma St we took (Madero?) throw heat but it’s both wild in the zone (and thus MLB hittable) and strait.

So, shock of shocks, the kids we drafted today will not be in the MLB next week. Someone’s gonna have to teach them to hit spots and get some movement on their pitches. Luckily that’s not that uncommon and it’s very possible.

What’s crazy is we have what? 5 pretty “leverage” strait to the pen college prospects we’ve drafted in 2 years? By the time Loup/Tepera’s contracts are done we may be in a position to not really need to pay for pen arms…. kind of like the Braves and Cardinals (go figure). Maybe sign a guy for experience, but the bulk of the work is done by farm boys.
