LA Angels Tuesday News Crash: Bird’s the Word

Twelve are suspended, nine of which are in the Angels organization.

Matt Duffy left Sunday’s game with lower back tightness. Matt Thaiss got called up. The Angels claimed Dillon Thomas off waivers and designated Kyle Barraclough for assignment. Austin Warren and Patrick Sandoval visited kids at a local children’s hospital.

Jesse Winker apologized to the fans for the double bird. He says that is all he is going to apologize for. Marco Gonzales says the Angels are “classless.” Here is what Phil Nevin had to say about the situation. (video link) This is a pretty good angle to view the fight. The video is short but it shows how quickly things escalated. Here is the Jomboy commentary.

The Kansas City Royals just traded first baseman/Designated Hitter Carlos Santana to the Mariners. Speaking of Kansas City, Zack Grienke remains weird.

Ronald Acuna Jr. fouled a ball off his foot on Saturday and can’t put any weight on it. X-Rays were negative but the braves are still figuring out his status going forward.

The Blue Jays signed Sergio Romo to a major league deal.

Fernando Tatis Jr. is fifth in All Star voting for the National League shortstop position even though he has not played a game this year.

David Blitzer bought a minority stake in the Cleveland Guardians.

Watch Pablo Sandoval obliterate a catcher in a home plate collision down in Mexico.

MLB won’t charge the Athletics a relocation fee if they move to Las Vegas.

Real “smart” for Rendon to get involved in the brawl after having the wrist surgery. Since he’s done for the year anyway what the hell’s he care. Might as well get involved and show how “tough” he is. Homey’s making a guaranteed $35 MILLION per year 7 yrs/$245MM. So he’ll have plenty of time to sit on his ass…

When the brawl started, and the guys from the bullpen ran towards the infield, I found myself looking for Percy to be leading the charge……

I think it’s proof that I’ve been locked in a time vacuum where I can’t leave the year 2002 because the Angels have pretty much sucked every year since.

Because we’re the Angels this always happens:

Angels placed RHP Archie Bradley on the 15-day injured list with a right elbow fracture.
Bradley suffered the injury during Sunday’s brawl with the Mariners when he fell over the dugout railing. He is expected to miss multiple months, if not the remainder of the 2022 season. The 29-year-old reliever leaves behind a 4.82 ERA, 1.29 WHIP, and 15/7 K/BB ratio in 18 2/3 innings of relief with the Angels.

Not knowing the particulars of how he managed to fall over the rail, we could be getting a bit harsh here. He may have been forced over by the scrum. If he got stuck between a tight pushing mob and the rail, maintaining balance could be nearly impossible.
I have no idea exactly how it happened, but I’m sorry for him.

Not sure why so many on this site are clamoring for Adell. He’s hitting .213 with an OPS of .841, with 40 strike outs in 108 at bats at SLC. He needs to perform a lot better than that at AAA before he should be called up.

Warren just started a rehab assignment at SL so he should be back real soon. Maybe Geraldo Reyes who’s also at SL? Too bad Buttrey cant get his stuff together or this would be a great opportunity for him.

The Angels also have a couple of 2021 relief pitcher draftees at Rocket City who have done pretty well. RHP Luke Murphy and LHP Eric Torres so at some point they could be options as well.

I don’t understand how anyone can really blame the Angels for showing that they’re willing to retaliate (especially after the Scoscia era where no teams worried about retaliation at all). One of Trout’s only cold zones is up and in, and that has led to him getting hit A LOT due to pitchers not hitting their spot. It’s led to a lot of injury scares for Trout.

Marcotor

Hit A LOT as compared to whom? It’s one of the few categories where Mike is not near, or leading the league. Contreras leads with 14, Mike T has 7. You could look it up.

I didn’t say Trout had the most HBP, I said that he’s had a lot of injury scares. Go back to April of this year, or 2018 against Texas. Or better yet, you could look it up and see that Trout’s cold zone is up and in on the strike zone, and he’s constantly hit due to pitchers not hitting their spot there.

Career greats: Trout (90), Ruth (43), Bonds (106), Mays (44), Cobb (94), Wagner (125). Considering Trout’s career is only half over, he does seem to be getting beaned more often than other greats.

Now, he’s nowhere near players known for leaning out over the plate like Biggio (285), or guys like A-Rod (176), and Jeter (170), but 90 is still a lot and Trout has a chance to approach the high 100s by the end of his career. He’s certainly on-pace to be top 25 all time for HBP. And we know none of the pitches thrown at Trout are because he’s an A-hole. The same can’t be said for other HBP leaders.

This particular season Trout isn’t among the leaders, but he’s also already been injured once from being hit and is clearly sick and tired of it. However, between 2011 – 2019 he was hit 81 times, good for 10th on the leaderboard for that time period. That’s a far cry from Rizzo’s 145 during the same time period, but again, Rizzo is known for leaning into pitches to take it on the arm.

Now let’s narrow the focus to top 20 WAR players during that span. Trout is the clear leader in 2011-2019 with 81 HBP. Russell Martin has 78, McCutchen and Feeman have 65. At the other end, Betts has 19, Cabrera has 21. In the middle we see names like Donaldson with only 45 and Posey with 38.

In sum, Trout is being hit more than other current and former top players. Part of that is probably that Trout’s weakness is perceived as being high and inside, but part of it is likely that teams feel free to throw high and tight to Trout because he’s such a nice guy that he doesn’t charge the mound and the Angels don’t retaliate.

I’d wager Trout doesn’t like the idea of retaliation. I’d also wager he decided enough was enough and agreed when the team discussed having Wantz throw at someone.

When your stars get thrown at, at their head no less, you have to retaliate. Not protecting your star players is soft.

Furthermore, if you are pitching to that gnome altuve, or any other cheating asstros, you are REQUIRED to bean those cheating fuckers every time!

If this team was something like 15 games over .500 and suspensions would potentially impact a postseason appearance- Nevin may have thought twice. But in this situation with Trout almost being beaned, it had to be done.

How ridiculous it is the way the league handed out punishment to the actual fight participants. All the action took place in front of the Angels dugout. When Seattle attacked, how else were they supposed to defend themselves. Why no suspension for Seattle’s manager who was in the middle of the scrum. Stupid and insane. That said, I’m so glad we finally defended ourselves and sent a message to the rest of baseball no more headhunting Mike Trout.

I agree Scott Servais should have a 2-3 game suspension. Also, Iglesias probably only deserves one for his tantrum, because I don’t think he was actually involved in the fight.

The rest seem to be okay. Nevin planned it – 10; Winker was the initial aggressor – 7; Rendon threw the first “punch” – 5; Crawford was overall probably the most violent – 5; Tepera was the most involved combatant from the Angels – 3; Wantz deliberately threw at 2 players – 3; and down the line.

Servais was somewhere between the Angels’ coaches up to Tepera level of involvement, so 2-3 would be appropriate.

I would agree, Servais should have gotten a game or two, I don’t know how he avoided suspension when three Ångels coaches were suspended.

After that, I think the league got the rest of the suspensions right.

I think the Nevin suspension’s a bit long because he so obviously set out to start a fight…. which is usually a bad idea, but was probably what needed to be done in this case.

I think the Sthailers were sad that we hit Upton and decided to test the Angels every which way they could. I’m all for letting some stuff go, but if they are gonna set out to see how much they can get away with it’s time to hit a man in the ass with a baseball.

All the “what? They didn’t even hit Trout?” stuff is crap. You could tell from how he acted in the dugout Winker and friends were good to go, and they were good to go cause they knew they’d been screwing around and asking for it in the previous games. We hit Upton, so the Semen don’t like us. They forced the issue, so we fought. Even the MLB saw it coming, so they gotta make the punishment worse.

It was a pretty good watch outside of the Upton stuff which seemed like a reach. I don’t think he or anyone else thought that was anything but a slipped pitch due to a poorly rubbed up ball.
