Angels Barely Avoid Getting Swept by Baltimore, Somehow, win 7-6

Remember the optimism the Angels had? yeah, it was gone now after 2 losses to Baltimore. This game was a must win to avoid utter panic amongst Angels fans.

In the final game vs Baltimore at home, things were a bit stressful for the Angels. It looked great at first, scoring 6 in the first inning. However, the Angels pitching had a terrible performance on the day, squandering the lead.

Jose Suarez had the mound again, a third day game for him. He went 4 and a third innings, giving up 3 runs on 3 hits, striking out 6 while walking 2. All 3 runs were on a 3 run home run.

Austin Warren gave up 3 of his own, including a 2 run home run.

It was Jo Adell who shone brightest today on the offense, hitting a Grand Slam in the first inning. Walsh drove in 2 as well, again in the first.

Highlighted Recap

The Angels struck first, with Walsh getting a bases loaded single to drive in Ohtani and Trout in the first.

2-0 Angels!

After another walk, Jo Adell came to the plate against a new pitcher and immediately hit a GRAND SLAM!

6-0 Angels!

However, 3 runs were given back by a 3 run shot in the 3rd by Suarez. 6-3 Angels.

There were multiple other scares in the 5th and 6th, but the bullpen shut it down. Meanwhile, the Angels failed to even get on base much, with a caught stealing to boot!

It finally caught up to them, however, as Austin Warren allowed 3 runs in the 7th. 6-6 tied game.

Thankfully, the Angels got the lead back thanks to a bases loaded walk in the 7th!

7-6 Angels!

Jimmy Herget had a clean 8th, and while the Angels loaded the bases again, they did not score again.

Archie Bradley closed out the 9th after jimmy gave up another baserunner. He shut the door, and secured the save. Angels win 7-6 and avoid the sweep!

HR’s should leave the park. Hate that yellow line in RF. Yeah it was for us that time, but more often than not I feel like it goes against us.

I am not a big fan of it either. It just doesn’t look right. However, I have to disagree about help/hurt as it has helped us on a number of occasions, including several from Trout.

I’m a little nervous about ongoing success with having Jose Suarez in the rotation. It seems last year he would come in form the pen and just start mowing down the competition. this year he seems to just dilly dally and slows down even more as soon as he gets into trouble.

Unfortunately our options at AAA don’t appear to be any better. Canning is still a month away. Neither Jansen Junk, Davis Daniel or Jhonathan Diaz have really stepped up yet at Salt Lake. I would think the best option from the farm right now has to be Cesar Valdez who pitched a complete game 2 run 8 strike out performance last Friday.

It’s still early but Suarez with a 5.54 ERA and a 1.54 Whip there’s good reason to be nervous. In fact there good reason to be nervous about anything with this team with Joe Maddon at the helm..

Worst win for any baseball team ever. Someone should fold this team and it’s front office up, wipe their ass with it, then spit a wad of gum in it, then put it in their pocket and run from Pomona to Malibu. Then throw their clothes in the ocean. Then light themselves on fire. Farhan Zaidi!

Emojis.

We are nine and seven. Let’s all be outraged.

Nobody is ever allowed to be upset about this perfect, flawless product. Wanting after 8 years to look like a team that matches up with its star power is embarrassing. Be content with mediocrity

Agree. Somebody here will continue to shame others for having high expectations and himself, as you say, defend mediocrity. However, some of us will not be content with two games over .500 or even just .500 while playing sloppy, error filled baseball. We have the best two players in the game — we should be significantly better than two games over .500!

Bit of a slow motion car crash there after the 1st. Glad we pulled it out.

I wouldn’t have pinch hit Walsh there with the bases loaded. Given how this team has been playing defense, surprised Maddon decided that was a move worth making given the narrow lead headed to the 9th. Or maybe I’m not surprised.

Expect much more of the same from Rendon. He is using his injury from last year to explain why can’t throw, field or hit. It also explains why Maddon wants to rest him every 5th day. There is no way he should be hitting behind Trout if he can’t protect him. I don’t know what to say about the fielding.

Rendon contract of 7 years/$245M is even worse than the Albert Pujols contract which was 10 years/$250M. Insane $$$ and was against then and now. I don’t care how the Angels’ apologists try to spin it.. it was a bad signing and another albatross for the Angels.

If he goes full Christian Yelich and never recovers, I agree. I think he’s allowed to dust some rust off given the injury he had. He had a slow start in his first year here and finished with MVP votes.

Rendon also won a ring with the Nationals in 2019 so I get how his contract would be for a higher AAV. Having Scott Boras as his agent doesn’t hurt, either..

Even though I know this will never happen.. I don’t think **ANY** player should be signed to a contract for more than 5 years. I don’t care WHO it is. Especially pitchers. Because a player 9 times out of 10 will never live up to the contract and has declining output or even worse has a career-ending injury and he’s still getting guaranteed $$$. The way the deals are structured a player gets a higher salary in the latter years. It’s insanity.

And just to add… when Ohtani’s contract is up at the end of this year he’ll get some ridiculous record-breaking 10-year deal if the Angels will even be able to pay it. Just wait and see..

That’s where I think he’s going. Rust is one thing, Bad back/hip/legs/lower will probably never go away. Baseball is hard enough, but impossible when your body is falling apart in your 30s.

Must be a different injury. According to medical websites not all hip injuries are the same and not all hip surgeries are successful, and not all function necessarily returns. Plus Rendon was older when he had the surgery. Obviously I’m not a doctor, and none of us have access to his medical records.

However, if you read the link it appears that Rendon’s surgery has not fixed his problem and there is no timeline. He just plans to keep playing and hopes he will get better in the future. Plus Stassi isn’t costing us $37million a year. Rendon literally can’t throw a ball to first because of his ongoing pain. Doesn’t that raise a red flag for you?

I’m not a doctor and don’t play one on television but I think I was essentially agreeing with you. Stassi had a hip impingement condition that was surgically repaired on both sides of his body. I believe Rendon had the same condition relieved but only on one side. I’m sure Stassi worked hard during his rehab & offseason but he never seemed to complain about its impact on his game. Is there any guarantee that Rendon will return to normal while playing through this condition especially if he cant make basic throws to first nor generate any power with his backside? Maybe its best to put him back on the IL and have him rehab this condition in Arizona.

He currently has a .351 OBP

Let’s maybe calm down and let him round into shape and going full Pujols on him. Albert at this point was a DH with 7+ years left on his deal. Rendon has 4 after 2022. If anything he should be leading off until he’s hitting for power regularly since he’s seeing the ball better than anyone on the roster.

At least Justin Upton comes off the books this year.
Maybe even Joe does too, (Oligarch go sign former Padre’s skipper Jayce Tingler who’s in Minnesota for $1M) quit spending millions to put lipstick on pigs. Then let Perry hire 150 good new little people (scouts, coaches, trainers, and cross checkers). Start plundering the top shelf level NCAA baseball programs for these people (Univ of Florida, Univ of Texas Austin, Vanderbilt, Miss St, LSU, UCLA) and quit embarrassing us with MLB’s worst farm system (Keith Law still says so).
BYE!!!!

Captain Jack probably played his last game in Anaheim for awhile today. Fletch maybe activated as early as tomorrow and I suspect he will be odd man out. also After Next Sunday the Angels will be forced to get down to 26 players on their roster which means no more than 8 pitchers in the bullpen. Right now, with Herget’s performance today, I would think the leading candidates for demotion have to be the A & W brothers, Austin Warren & Andrew Wantz.

If MLB had any huevos that would have made the Yankees forfeit the game yesterday. God knows with disco demolition night & 10 cent beer night from the past there definitely is precedent.

Angels batters walked 9 times and left 9 runners stranded on base to barely hold on to salvage a win at home against a bad team. This team has work to do to improve..

Every team leaves runners on base it happens but it seems to be a real issue with the Angels the leaving bases loaded, a runner on third etc. They had the same problem last season and the one before…..

Patrick, why do you pay a guy 14 or 15 million per year to close and in a one run game at home not to use him? Because we don’t want to put pressure on him according to Joe. Is that what makes a great closer, if not why pay him as much as you do?

I guess Kent and Bobby V are history.

I don’t think that pressure thing is the real reason. Joe probably doesn’t want to cause conflict or issues. Maybe Raisel was unhappy about how he was used last night? On the radio Mark said he was “unavailable” today presumably because of soreness or minor injury.

But he only three 10 pitches last night.

Pretty clear this is something else.
