Two way leadoff Ohtani day at New Yankee Stadium. It went horribly. 7 ER, 2/3 of an inning. He had no command, was sweating like crazy, and couldn’t get any help from the umps either. It was an NL game in an ugly game in NY. The bullpen after Slegers actually did a good job. (Except Mayers) And the offense came back in the 9th. It was a crazy wet game.
Recap
2 Way Disaster
Ohtani’s day started off with a flyout. A Rendon walk and a Gosselin home run game the Angels the lead, however. 2-0 Angels.
Shohei walked the first batter as a pitcher and the second batter. Then a wild pitch. It was not looking good as he was sweating up a storm. Another walk loaded the bases. Back to back singles, an rbi groundout, a HBP, and a bases loaded walk meant 4 runs scored and Maddon pulled him. He did not have it at all and couldn’t get a grip in the hot humid sun.
Slegers came in and gave up a double and 3 runs. So that is 7 ER for Ohtani with only 2/3 of an inning. Not good at all.
Bullpen Game
Down 7-2, the Angels needed to score badly, and playing by NL rules now, it was not looking good at all. They got 1. 7-3 NYY. Claudio came in to pitch next. He loaded the bases but somehow didn’t allow any runs.
Top of the 3rd, Angels get the bases loaded thanks to nyy mistakes yet get nothing. Claudio couldn’t find the strikezone either and after getting 2 on he was removed for Bundy. Yes, the sp from 2 days ago is back on the mound in relief. After a strikeout and a wild pitch, water fell from the sky!
Rain Delay
After a while, the rain let up some, the nerve, and Bundy went back out there in the middle of an at bat. He got out of the jam without issue.
Bundy also got a chance to hit in the 4th, not that he could do anything. But then again, neither could the others. He pitched the bottom half as the rain came back with a vengeance, and despite no grip, Bundy didn’t give up any more. Still 7-3 NYY.
The fifth inning saw the Angels crawl closer with a Walsh solo shot. A rain home run. 7-4 now.
Rain Delay Part 2
Just as things looked good again, another rain delay. These teams with weather really need roofs. After another waiting time, the game resumed and Watson came in to pitch. He got through the 5th without issue.
Watson got to hit a well, or at least just stand there at the plate. The Angels got nothing in the 6th. In the bottom half he couldn’t keep the Yankees off base and was pulled. Cishek time! He got a double play and ended the threat.
7th inning time as midnight on the east coast came. The Angels did nothing again on offense. Cishek kept the Yankees from scoring. Still 7-4 after 7.
Angels did nothing in the 8th as they are running out of time. Mayers came in for the bottom half and gave up a run. Now it was 8-4 NYY.
Last chance for the Angels vs Chapman. They actually got on base. Bases loaded for Walsh and HE HIT A GRAND SLAM! TIED GAME!
And it did not end there. Gosselin walked, Fletcher got a hit, and Rengifo drove them in! 10-8 Angels!
Then Ward doubled in Rengifo! 11-8 Angels!
Brand New Game
D-Cell came in for the bottom of the 9th with a save opportunity up 3. Groundout for out one. Then a groundout for out 2. A strikeout for out 3. THE ANGELS WIN!
Upcoming
The Angels still have to face the MFY tomorrow morning. At 39-41 they are way behind the other AL powerhouses but are not dead yet!
1 yr deal for $3M this season for TB. Will be FA after this season’s over.
BTW Thanks JD for leaving us Jered Walsh, Jose Suarez, and David Fletcher.
1 yr deal for $2M this season for the Twins. Will be FA after a Week
Rather have Zunino
Besides we have enuff cryebabies that still want a catcher. Matt Shoemaker will never have another season like 2014 again.
And No Vladdy Jr.
Thank You soooo much Jerry.
Thanx Billy E
Shane Bieber, Justin Upton got to pick his own incompetent Pharm Systum Direcktir ( Matt Swanson…..UGH!!! He’s still here BTW!! ). We dohnt hav the werst pharm systum for nuthin. 😫 💩
Hey, idiot… how about putting some F***ING NAMES on these pictures?
I dunno ther naymes.
BTW WCC didn’t have Matt Shoomakerz nayme eether. Don’t be a hater with a big ass chip on yer shoulder. I feel like Michael Moore in Midwest politics being ostracized for pointing out that these people voted for politicians who sold them out in the 1980’s.
I gave up during the second rain delay and did not check the score until first thing this morning. What a great surprise and what a way for the Angels to drag me back in.
Today is rained out…we win the series Y/N?
Of course we won. We played three games and won two of them !!
Only catch is a one day detour to MFY Stadium on August 16th during an East Coast swing
Yeah, that will be a brutal stretch. Lots of games against tough teams and no days off….
I hope Ohtani gets the start in NY
Nice win!
Nice?
I’d think you would have some superlative to offer instead of simply “nice.” It was in fact alot better than nice. It was fantastic !!
UnFUCKINGbelievable win!
That’ll do.
To Break TrAdition , We need more Superlatives and less Super Laxatives.
I gave it an exclamation point. 😀
Nice!
The game ended as it began: a star pitcher serves up several walks followed by clutch hits and a total of 7 earned runs. The only difference being Ohtani is great and Chapman sucks.
Wow! We won!
Slegers is the Happiest person from the comeback win.
Loved seeing Chapman sulking in the dugout. Reminded me of ol sphincter lips Papelbon years ago. Glad rez didn’t call “ballgame” and it was just some of us “rez-wannabees” calling it in the first. We were dead wrong.
If he really cared, he would have puked.
I’m more glad the Umpires didn’t call ballgame.
Knowing that there would be heavy rain today they probably had a mandate from the League to do everything possible to get the game in.
If they’d known that the MFY would wind up losing, they would have called it.
That is probably true too !!!
But they could have easily called it (with the league’s blessing) after the second rain delay as an official game. So this “opportunity” is the result of somebody with balls on the umpiring crew, working with the Angels, to get this game completed
Maybe Soggy Joe isn’t a complete Maddoning fool after all.
I never thought he was, despite questioning a couple of decisions this season. Over the course of a long season there will always be a few decisions a manager makes that you disagree with or don’t like.
But I never stopped being a fan of Joe. He would have to screw up a bunch of times and over an extended period for me to change my thinking about him.
As far as last night goes, Joe said in the postgame presser that Dan Iassonga did a good job of handling the decision to call or play. He said that Dan was very “measured” and not emotional about the decision and had looked at the weather radar and seen that the rain would let up. So, there is that.
All that said, knowing how the League typically favors the Yankees in any number of ways it would not have been surprising if that game had been called with them leading….
here’s an interesting bit from CBS Sports:
“The grand slam is the first Chapman has allowed in his career. That was also only the fourth home run he’s surrendered to a lefty batter, and the first since 2017.”
That is really incredible. Walsh did something unbelievable.
Sutton was on point as Chapman did look rather pedestrian last night. The guy they had on the hill in the 7th & 8th was nails and made me think the Angels were beat. Thanks to my always optimistic bride we kept it on and I didn’t miss something cool 🙂
The Bride of Jobu ?
Can She Pitch?
I say “F-it” … I do it myself.
Nope, that ain’t one of us in a previous game. That’s Pinstripe Alley tonight.
I thought we cornered the market on being negative.
A few people were blaming Boone. They said he should have pulled Chapman after he walked the third guy. Can’t say I disagree. Despite Cashman’s recent comments you have to believe that Boone is feeling increasing pressure.
His seat has to be feeling pretty hot right now.
btw WE WON THIS more than the Yankees losing it.
that took some balls to come back from that first inning deficit. amazing.
it didn’t even look like luetge was ready when he came in; i’d have expected he certainly wasn’t ready for walsh
I am not defending either side but Yankee fans would say he should have started warming him up after the second walk.
I’m shocked, SHOCKED! And yes, I actually am that shocked.
Anything can happen in a baseball game, but it usually doesn’t but this this time it did.
I was at a friend’s, amped up to see Shohei’s start in Yankee Stadium and after 40 pitches and 7 runs, we found other things to do. Total bummer. I wrote it off as a loss.
I checked in twice: both rain delays. I didn’t see Walsh’s salami or any of that stuff afterward. Man…
I guess Elias thinks this is the first time since at least 1900 that a team gave up 7 in the 1st and scored 7 in the 9th to win? Holy shit!
Aye: this was SHOCKING to read about. (Also, in non-Angels news: I hope Bauer’s career is ruined by this thing. Such an asshole.)
After Iggy Struckout. I thought we would leave the runners stranded(TrAdition). Then Gif came through. Mind blown twice this innging
I was equally shocked and had been discussing Maddon’s Sosh-Esq Mathis man crush on Renjifo. “WTF is the guy doing taking up space on a MLB roster?” Then it’s…”Oh well what do we know?”
Maddon’s Soth-like man crush is on Cishek.
Do these wins against the Yankees count? Good Lord I love beating the Yankees. Every time a Yankee fan screams profanities at a screen because a player whose name he never bothered to learn puts the Yankees behind with a clutch hit a darling baby sloth is born.
Seriously, that’s how sloths are made.
Considering the gestation period of a sloth and how many angry Yankee fans there are? , Yeah I don’t believe that for one second.
So you are a science denier. OK.
If we somehow manage to turn things around, I think we’ll look back on this game as the turning point in the season…
It is rare to comeback and win games that you trail by 4 or more runs going into the 9th. But we did it!!!
Walsh is a hero !!!
Finally, the Yankees have a “day that doesn’t exist” on THEIR calendar.
Yuck the Fankees

Places the puking baby Yoda in a diff perspective, doesn’t it?
Shame on you !!!
You do not approve of lighting that baby up?
one of the best post-win images. Missing Victor a bit, but I’m on the “I like Daron Sutton wagon” all by my lonesome (Lana might be here too).
Right there with you, Dude.
I’m starting to like him more myself.
But what does that say about us?
Its says you guys like an irritating voice and dead air time after jokes. Even Gubi who laughs at everything gives him dead silence. What do you think about that Jose?
Even the nice David Fletcher didn’t know what to say after Sut said, Hi I’m your Announcer, I’m the one that says good things about you, or something like that. Dudes light high pitch (doesn’t know) know it all Delivery is blah. Even when he says he doesn’t know it, sounds sarcastic to the point Gubi doesn’t know what to say. I had high Hope’s for him when he was announced. He is getting slightly better(b/c anything’s better than the crap he was doing), But I can’t get past Chicken Little telling me the Sky is Falling.
Thanks! Should I send it to Victor? Maybe he’ll make a Big Fly t shirt out of it!
It would be my first Big Fly shirt. NICE!
We are better than the Yankees. Teams are built similar, but the Yankees play in the AL East, and feast on them lame teams, and we have OAK and HOU in our division.
Great game Walshie.
PANTHER is the Pen
Rays, Red Sox and Blue Jays is a pretty mean gauntlet.
You are right, they did their damage against the Central, just like us, but also do good against the West, unlike us.
Assumptions from past seasons.
I give Panther to Walsh. Pen is Honorable Mention.
I’ll sleep well tonight. Halos amazing comeback parlayed with a Clippers loss.
