LA Angels Thursday News Crash: Baseball Everywhere

Last year we had just enough MLB to give us a little reprieve from the day to day doldrums. I snuck in some KBO as well. And now that life is approaching what we’d call “normal” it is just astounding how much baseball is truly going on.

At the MLB level, Shohei Ohtani continues to be the national story. Really I could link dozens of articles but let’s just focus on why he should win MVP.

Granted being on the big stage in NY is one reason for the extra coverage. Ohtani is getting run to the point the NY press is wondering if he’s getting too much.

But MLB isn’t the only game in town. Not by a longshot.

Possibly missed while watching Ohtani drop bombs in NY on Monday was this amazing catch at the College World Series.

As I type this, an incredible College World Series is headed to a winner take all Game 3. The stands have been full, the games have been great, and I’m putting a trip to Omaha on the calendar in the next two years.

But, just like an infomercial, there’s more. Families and friends are once again enjoying the minor league baseball experience.

Our own Turk’s Teeth is doing a phenomenal job keeping track of the talent down on our farm. One standout, Davis Daniel had to postpone our interview today. Why? He got called up.

If you want a little insight into lower level minor league ball, here’s this: we tried to do a zoom chat a couple of weeks ago but the wifi at the team hotel is too slow to keep the video going and the players aren’t allowed to go anywhere but the ballpark. So we had to set up the interview for when he was on the road and at a hotel with decent wifi. Two weeks with no luck. How’s that for minor league grinding?

Late breaking news, and probably the only link that will get comments, comes from LA where absolutely disgusting details on Trevor Bauer’s charges were released by The Athletic. It is rare I’m at a loss for words, but I’m at a loss for words.

I’ll be back with a more substantial, 3 day, Independence Day segment tomorrow. Please link what I missed below.

Don’t forget Alfredo Griffin who told Dipshit that Baldoquin could play is the MLB now.

Well the fact that Dipshit didn’t know the difference (Including that young Vladdy Jr was future star ) is the reason why he is a dipshit.

Reggie Bush cheated Big Time and the NCAA took away his Heisman Trophy, not that the rules changed he wants it back, lot’s of laughs. You got free house, cars, and cash and knew you were cheating, jeez and more geez. What a low life. He wants to be rewarded for cheating.

It’s like if ‘Roids became legal and Roger, Barry, ARod. Sheffield, Papi, etc said hey what about us now getting into the HOF. Break the rules and to bad for you.

He didn’t cheat, he had a paying job that the NCAA does not like. The NCAA wants all athletes to be needy.

Explain clearly how he cheated again, and then explain how that unfairly influenced his on-field performance to the point where he unfairly won the Heisman.

And in comparison to USC, explain how other schools such as Miami or even Penn State got a relative slap on the wrist for the same or in the case of Penn State , much more egregious violations.

The NCAA is complete and utter joke

^This^ is the key point.

If the NCAA wants to punish Bush and USC because he and his family received “gifts” and money, that is fine. Just be fair and punish the SEC schools in the same way.

Would Alabama, Georgia or LSU ever get a punishment like this? Not only taking away a deserved Heisman from one of their players but actually stripping a National Championship?

The answer is no. The “Old Boys Network” is favored by the NCAA. If you don’t know those are the old, white racists who have memberships at Augusta and run those big time SEC Schools. The NCAA and the “Old Boys Network” does not like the left-leaning ways of California but they sure as hell will turn a blind eye to the shady dealings of Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida, you know, their brethren.

When I use my big gray logic machine, I suspect just about every pitcher who doesn’t employ a popped out curve ball, a knuckle ball, or a splitter was using goop of some kind. Maybe a few guys that got more fastball rise out of it slipping off their fingertips skipped it too. Otherwise, if I’m a pitcher who needs to snap the ball out of my hand with my fingertips I was using goop. Why wouldn’t I? No one cared till last month. I don’t think there’s much point in speculating about every pitcher who has a bad start or who’s K rate drops. Chances are they were using something.

Great day for a postponement/rainout since everyone but the clubhouse guy has pitched the last couple of days. Plus we leave NY on a high note rather than a quick turnaround, no one to pitch, 12-5 loss.

Cowboy26

The Angels now have 5 of their top pitching prospects making up the rotation In Madison, Al. Detmers, CRod (who pitched 2-2/3 scoreless innings yesterday) Cooper Criswell , Kyle Tyler & Davis Daniel.

Alot of these guys may never see the Triple A band boxes of the PCL West but instead ultimately get promoted directly to Anaheim.

Shouldn’t the Angels move the Bee’s to a city where the altitude is not an issue with player development?

Accessing Google Maps now, scouring the western 1/3 of the nation for a suitable city with a reasonable altitude, maybe closer to home.

4 of the 10 teams under 700 feet. Move to the Northwest, Texas, Northern, CA. Sugar Land, TX elevation 100 feet, Round Rock, TX, 700 feet,
Sacramento, 30 feet, Tacoma, 240 feet.

I propose we play the Sacramento River Cats (SF AAA) in a 7 games series for the rights to their city and stadium. We win, we move the Bee hives and Joe Adell’s bedroom set, couch and refrigerator to Sac Town.

I have been grossed out by the Tyler Skaggs situation. It makes us look terrible. Then I see Trevor Bauer and how disgusting he is and how that overshadows things over here. Bauer is such scum. Yes I know she’s not blameless for returning and it’s all weird. But damn that’s sordid.

Also, Rachel Luba disgusts me. I was really bothered when she called herself a female trailblazer. First off, notice how suddenly his agent is now referring the guy and not Luba. Luba also went in a Twitter rant in the female accuser .Luba also represents Puig another domestic abuser. Luba was just an opportunist

I’m actually glad about it. It would have been nice to take 3 of 4 but 2 of 3 is good, too. It leaves us on a high. Odds are we would have lost today. I’m not saying we would have but these two teams are similar so a split makes sense and I’d rather have that 2 of 3 feeling.

Speaking of Vanderbilt…I want Rocker!!!

CWS struggles could slip him to our #9 pick.

FungoAle
Legend

On Rocker:

Carlos Collazo – Baseball America – June 18: “Rocker has dealt with inconsistent velocity this spring, sitting in the 89-93 mph range at times before getting back to his usual mid-90s stuff. He’s still succeeded and overwhelmed SEC hitters even without his best velocity, but scouts question how that pitch will play at the next level, especially due to the fact that his fastball has played down at times dating back to high school.”

I saw Rocker pitch 3-times in the Regionals and WS, was not overpowering. There are red flags with the drop in velocity. Will be interested to see how Turk weighs in on this guy.

But that’s our TrAdition!!

gitchogritchoffmypettis

Reply to  FungoAle

What worries me about Rocker, from the little I’ve seen, is that that fastball is strait AF. Even just solid college hitters don’t seem to have that much trouble with it sometimes. Not sure we wouldn’t all be bitching about having drafted him two years from now.

He also looks like he is barely avoiding the fat farm now, in his early 20s. Granted, I’m not in the camp that’s treasuring this #9 pick like it’s a top 5, so if he were a bust for us I still think we can get good arms out of this draft. But I am not sure people who want him have really looked at him. Those are the same people, in general, who will wrend their blouses over a 9 pick like it’s a 3 when this doesn’t work.

Or he’s CC Sabathia. Who knows?

FungoAle
Legend

Yeah, Rocker is a big guy and judging by the dad, he has some big bones and still filling out. Weight could be an issue once he hits the pros.

Limited ball movement is also a ding against Madden’s resume, which has me concerned. His fastball when up in the zone, gets hit. But he is a 1st round talent. I’ll support it but I’m nervous on this dude and with Rockers velocity drop, him too.

I recognize the masses here just wants a pitcher goddammit!! Let’s see how this plays out. The Top 10 has really set themselves apart and consist of 4-prep SS, Leiter, Jobe, and catcher Davis. With Rocker in that group. When rounds 2-5 come along, we can snag some arms but hoping we nail the 9 pick regardless of position.

gitchogritchoffmypettis
Legend
Reply to  FungoAle

While there is no “sure thing” arm in the draft, though we aren’t picking early enough to get em if there was. Still, I am excited for this draft because there are literally 15-20 pitchers I wouldn’t mind getting that project to around our pick spots in the first 4 rounds. I think we’ll get some pretty high quality pitching prospects this year…. all we have to do is develop some of them.

Could be worse ( a college catcher who can’t catch or HS outfielder that can’t field or hit MLB pitching ).

If a high school arm like Painter or Jobe fell to us would you be OK taking him? As far as #1 starter potential goes those guys may actually fit the bill more than Maddon or Bachman, but it would be a 4 year wait to see them maybe.

You maybe right in your assessment of Bauer Senator, but let’s keep in mind that he will have his day in court and then we will hopefully know the truth. I figure that at best Trevor is just plain flat out stupid. So is the girl for returning to his house. Celebrity or not he never should of met with her even once knowing that she could go to the police with a story or that she may try and get money from him. At worse he is a deviate who has ruined his life and proves he is just plain flat out a stupid criminal. So are we just lucky we were not in the bidding for his services? YUP, and we really need a good story Of crime, sex, and Rockin’ Roll, lol.

My take is both need to see a shrink and put in the nut house.
