Eric Kay’s trial was rescheduled to April. This is a “to do list” for Perry Minasian.

Over the weekend Tommy Lasorda went into intensive care where he is said to be resting comfortably. How did Ryan Tepera get a 10 place vote in the MVP balloting? Yu Darvish, anyone? This youth coach is way out of control. MLB Trade Rumors has a Free Agent destination picking contest.

Clevinger to get TJS, signs 2 yr deal with the Padres anyway.

https://www.cbssports.com/mlb/news/padres-mike-clevinger-needs-tommy-john-surgery-and-will-miss-entire-2021-mlb-season/

I haven’t seen it mentioned that Dylan Bundy came in 9th in Cy Young voting so that’s cool.

And Trout was 5th (and only 1 pt out of 4th) for MVP.

They did this with GRich. They just like paying recovery bills like good dads

Cheap “bounce back” starter candidates and and trying to find the right costly bullpen pieces sounds like Jerry Eppler

True. Given that there’s something like 1 good starter candidate without serious injury problems plus Charlie “Florida Boy” Morton I bet EVERY GM is doing this. That or looking to trade. At any rate, something will happen and we can all complain about it then.

But I want to complain now! Then I want to complain that everyone else is complaining about my complaint (which will be the only right take, clearly)! Then I will complain when people stop commenting on my complaining (particularly because I complain too much). Waaaaa!

(That, and we should sign an ACE, yesterday!)

Lots of middle to back end pitching options available. I’m thinking solid rotation with good bullpen is the way to go here and Minasian has helped build some nice bullpens in Atlanta.

Odorizzi and Tanaka are now the class of the free agent class. Not mind blowing. Be nice to add one, but they will likely demand more than they are worth. If upside is added, it will likely be through a trade.

Get at least one guy like Chase Anderson (106 ERA+ if you exclude last year, 103 with it), Brett Anderson (103), maybe a slight gamble on Folty from Atlanta (still only 28), or Mike Minor to solidify the back end of the rotation.

Take the savings and invest in the bullpen.

Yeah. Honestly, if Minasian waits out the market, I suspect there will be a lot of good relievers who can be had for rather cheaply in Jan/Feb. The bullpen market is likely to be hurt significantly on the whole (as evidenced by no one wanting Hand at a 1/10 value), so I imagine we’ll see him be patient on this front.

Conversely, based on the deals we have seen for Ray and Smyly, the SP market will probably still be relatively strong, at least compared to other positions. We’ll see what Minasian does.

Pitching this off season will cost period, as there is not enough to fill all 30 teams, so maybe filling in the Bullpen and adding a couple of cheat starters ASAP is smart way of delivering to our needs. Taking a chance on Kluber and some others coming off TJS and signing them for one or two years is a less expensive way to fill in the needs too. Very intriguing and fun to guess.

See Tim Lincecum in 2016. 😡
We don’t fix totaled Lamborghinis and make them whole again. Arte prefers the lousy scout and coach who’ve been in the organization since 1987 and watched the Dodgers find Mike Piazza, Russell Martin, Paul LoDuca, and Cody Bellinger. BTW none of those guys had anything to do with Sabermetrics.

A couple of pieces of the Braves bullpen are free agents. I wonder if Minasian brings either Melancon or O’day over.

Side note: Angels never should have let O’day get away.

Obviously, everyone is shooting for Bauer (and he should be our first choice, even if he costs 30M a year (I would hope to back load the deal so that is uses Pujols money from 2022).

However, if he goes elsewhere (like the Mets to build the superrotation), then I think we should target Tanaka and Taijuan Walker. Getting two more SP would push everyone down, not require relying on Ohtani’s arm, and give Detmers/Naughton time to develop/prove themselves.

If we could pair that with some bullpen help, either top of the line (Hand) or waiting out the market (and risk the dumpster diving label so often applied to Eppler) that would be great.

We could, in theory, wait out the market on all of our other needs (middle IF, 4th OF, C).

I personally really like some of the bp options this year. May and McGee are solid, following May on Instagram I’d love to have his personality on the team, his numbers since moving to the bp are pretty good too. McGee has some solid numbers as well. As for infield and pitching I want to say let’s try out the NPB and KBO players, try signing Ha-Seong Kim and maybe Sugano or Arihara. As for those already in mlb, the article lists some good ones.

If Arte really does make baseball decisions for marketing purposes he’s missed the huge Korean population in his back yard.

I think it’d be huge if we sign Kim, I’ve only read decent things about his play, maybe a couple question marks next to his defense but other than that people seem to like him. At first I wasn’t so sure because everyone was saying Simba would be back but now, I think I’d like if we sign Kim would love Simba but if it’s truly over then Kim may do good for us.

Hall of fame voting will be interesting this year, no doubt. Steroid users should not be allowed in period. But after that who belongs in? For me I would think that Wagner was every bit as good a relief pitcher as any to come down the road, he sure didn’t blow many saves. Kent was a power hitting 2b and power hitting 2b are very rare. Played a long time too with 3 teams. Helton was a great hitting 1st but did play in Denver where thin air helps a lot. But his split on road and home were not that much different, so maybe he should go in. Schilling should go in and personality after retiring should not be held back for that. Torii Hunter is on the bubble with me, but lean towards putting him in. Tim Hudson was certainly an above average pitcher and won 224 games, tough call there. There will be debate on this the rest of the next few weeks.

Pudge Rodriguez and Mike Piazza are already in. Probably Rickey Henderson, too. I think the ship has sailed on steroid users.

Torii is definitely a Hall of Famer to me. He’s not a First Ballot guy, but he’s Hall of Famer. I think he’ll make it by his third year of eligibility. He won’t get in on the First Ballot, but very few do. If Phil Rizzuto and his 42 career WAR is a Hall of Famer then Torri and his 50 career WAR sure is.

The problem is Phil Rizzuto is a total bullshit Yankee hall of famer. I’m not sure Torii is making it past the Mud Room of Very Good. If Evans isn’t in with 17 more WAR and guys like Keith Hernandez and Will Clark and Jack Clark don’t warrant a second look with the same WAR I don’t see Torii getting in unless we use the magic of CGI to make all his footage in a Twins uni into Yankee pinstripes.

I don’t see a lot to argue with in that link to the to-do list. I would rather find a shortstop and leave Fletch at second, though. I kind of like his arm better with the shorter throws from there. Not major, though. Ideally we could resign Simba but it seems pretty unlikely.

I’m hoping we can take advantage of some of the clubs who’ve already begun to express budget concerns (cry poor). A team like AZ, who’ve made comments placing them in this category, is a good bet for a trade that relieves veteran payroll. I’d love a Nick Ahmed (who’s under contract through 2023) to replace Simba and keep the seat warm until Vera/Paris are ready. I actually think we could build a package to AZ that would address multiple areas of need. Left handed corner OF (Kole & Peralta), veteran SP (Merrill Kelly), young/controlled P (Luke Weaver) ect. There’s possibilities there for sure.

This is the off season being a GM is going to be tough as we do not know what is coming down the road. The claim all 30 teams lost money this past season because of the Covid-19 virus which will still be out there in 2021, at least for the first half of the season. But if the cable money is included hard to understand losing money with the Halos. I do not see Fletcher physically holding up playing short and is just flat out awesome at 2b. If keeping Fletcher at SS then a lot of options are available and keeps the money spent go a lot farther.

That youth coach would be tossed and most likely banned in my son’s league. Zero tolerance for those types of things from either coaches or parents.

Last year my kids were on a kindergarten basketball team (5-6 year olds).

In the league championship game the police literally had to be called because of the way one of the coaches and some of the parents were acting.

I mean, think about that, police being called for a kindergarten basketball game.

The world is nuts.
