LA Angels Wednesday News Crash: Flap Away!

Good morning Angels fans. Hope you are safe. It is a dangerous world out there. Have some links.

Angels News

Trevor Bauer asked Angels twitter fans to sell him on the team. It did not go well you could say. Should have asked here instead.

Angels will officially pick 9th overall in the 2021 draft. First time they picked in the top 9 since 1997 when the Angels picked 3rd.

MLB suggests that Francisco Lindor may be a good fit to be traded to the Angels. Right, because the Angels need to trade their limited trade chips for an elite SS. I’m rolling my eyes, in case you can’t tell.

With the Angel Stadium land purchased, there is more info out now, apparently the team will stay in Anaheim for at least 30 years and up to 75 years.

Around Baseball

Tommy Pham got stabbed Sunday, his stab wound was 12 inches long and 5 wide. He was getting out of a nightclub when a fight broke out. Apparently he is in good condition.

In good Umpiring, Monday night’s ALCS home plate umpire John Tumpane was perfect. Literally. In the first time since pitches were tracked, an umpire called a perfect game.

Mr. Perfecto

Someone made a comic book cover for the Astros cheating scandal. Looks very Supervillainy.

Bruce Bochy is up for managing again. Maybe.

The Rays and Braves are both closer to the World Series than the Astros and Dodgers are, which is not making certain MLB executives happy.

Not that the Dodgers are going down easy, as they rallied to make it a one run game in the 9th. Astros though, well they shoot themselves in the foot.

Bad post game questions are expected when it comes to sports, so it is no surprise when one happened after the Dodgers vs Braves game.

GOOOOOOOO MAJESTIC SEA FLAPPY FLAPS!!! I want to see the team with the 10M payroll that plays in a depressing tube lit cave in an industrial park win the World Series in a year that the Cubs, Yankees AND Doyers all bought a shot and failed.

John Tumpane for GM. He knows pitches.

Thanks to the ratings bonanza, MLB and the networks want (and will always want) the Doyers and MFY.

I wrote this in the game thread but thought I would share it here as well.

In Edgar Allen Poe’s classic A Tell Tale Heart, the main character commits murder and is haunted by guilt which takes the form of a thumping sound from which he cannot escape.

Skip ahead 150 years and Jose Altuve is hearing a buzzing sound in his ears distracting enough to cause him to make errant throws. I’m calling the new story A Trash Can Heart.

Still not as bad as Mickey Sasser, Steve Sax or my favorite Chuck Knoblauch.

“….Knoblauch started having problems throwing the ball to first base, a routine and relatively simple task for any second baseman. In 1999 he had a total of 26 errors. And, apparently, one of his wild throws from second base hit Keith Olberman’s mom in the face as she watched the game from the stands”

Mackey.

Knoblauch must be Rev’s favorite ballplayer, no?

Altuve’s priest told him it’s either 10,000 Hail Mary’s or a few bounced throws. Efficiency.

During Sax’s wild arm period, I was dragged to Chavez Latrine. We’re sitting in the second deck right at first base. Ground ball to Sax, I yell “Heads up, we’re gonna get a souvenir baseball!”

Doyer fans, being Doyer fans, pelted me with peanuts.

Still worth it.

Had a similar comment about Taylor Ward at 3B in Tempe a couple of years ago.

You win LOL. Did you know that Harvey Mandel was the guy who showed EVH the rudiments of fretboard tapping?

The Rays are showing how important great pitching is. Hopefully the team’s taking notes. Also I’m smiling seeing the Braves go 2-0 in the NLCS.

If it’s a Braves-Rays World Series, I’ll consider watching it.

I hope someone from the Rays brain trust (preferably a pitching specialist) is on the short list of GM candidates, even if it is a “long” list per Carpino.

Dodgers pitching a fit today.

Lindor and Plesac or an arm for Adell or Marsh? Now that’s interesting. One year of greatness from Lindor followed by a QO if they still exist and 4 years of Plesac.

Really, if you add a Bauer or Stroman to that rotation the only weakness is the bullpen.

Fletcher, Lindor, Trout, Rendon, Walsh, Upton, Adell, Stassi, with Ohtani mixed in there somewhere is great.

Stroman, Bundy, Plesac, Heaney, Canning with Barria, Sandoval, and Detmers as depth is a nice staff.

I think that trade would cost you Adell AND Marsh. Adell for Plesac straight up would be more realistic.

True. Depending on how badly Cleveland wants to dump Lindor’s salary. Bad thing is we only have two really good trade chips and we probably need to hold onto one.

Be nice if a couple of the further away lottery tickets like Jeremiah Jackson had a good year in the minors in 2020 to build some value.

This may be blasphemy, but given how badly we need pitching, I’d trade Marsh and Adell for good arms. Say if Cleveland offered Pleasac and a package arm of some interest and Detroit offered Matt Boyd and a couple of mid-range prospect arms I’d give both those teams a big time OF prospect and another prospect or two.

I like both Adell and Marsh, and I like the idea of cheap budding stars. But offense isn’t our problem and we can play Walsh out there, same with Ward. If we gained 2 starters (plus, as we always hope, Ohtani) we could invest some money in maybe Dee Gordon or Jurickson Profar to play IF/OF too, plus say Kurt Suzuki at catcher (or get Castro back) and then build up our pen, maybe a couple big spends like Shane Greene and Liam Hendricks (or Blake Treinen) and maybe a couple other solid relief arms…. there are actually a lot of solid but not flashy relievers out there.

If we traded for 2 starters there would be A LOT we could do with “Trevor’s” 30 million and, while it would suck to see Adell and Marsh become stars on another team, they would be a luxury for us and pitching is a NEED. Of course if Jordyn Adams became the next Christian Yelich it would help us get over it.
