Angels Stay Alive: Win 5-2

Mike Clevinger still hates the Angels. Ever since he was traded to Cleveland from the Angels, Clevinger has hated the team. For him to pitch vs the Angels again brings him joy. Sure he lost last time, but he would have his revenge.

Facing Clevinger was Jamie Barria. A pitcher that has done better this year than last, yet there is one thing he is not, Clevinger. Barria gave up a home run in the first inning and the team was quickly in a hole. This was bad for the Angels.

But then San Diego had a scare with Clevinger after 1 inning. It seems like he may have been injured and was pulled from the game. He may not be ready for the postseason. A postseason that the Angels look to miss out on.

Not that the team gave up, as Shohei Ohtani hit a game tying home run in the 2nd. Then Justin Upton puts the Hot in Hot Pocket, hitting a massive home run himself right after. Then after a not home run from Taylor Ward, Anthony Bemboom hit one in his stead.

Hot Pocket…

Now it was time for Jamie Barria to settle down and get outs. Which he did for the 2nd inning. Yet after just one batter in the 3rd, Maddon pulled him for Patrick Sandoval. It was a bullpen game with only 6 runs scored total.

For coming in as relief, Sandoval actually provided some, pitching a scoreless 3rd-5th. Matt Andriese took over in the 6th. Seems Maddon was having a 9 batter per pitcher guideline going on for the game. Mike Mayers came in for the 8th and Félix Peña closed it out in the 9th.

Angels are now 26-31. 3 Games left at Dodger Stadium starting Friday.

no game Thursday so we will be alive, no matter what, going into the final weekend (if you count Friday night as the weekend). Yes, it would have been nice if we’d won 4 or 5 more games and already been in, or at least on the verge of being in, but if you look at it as Friday’s game being the equivalent of Game 160 in a regular season and we’re still in the chase…

I know, I have to squint to see it that way (and ignore the expanded playoff situation).

And (ugh) let’s go, Rangers. I can’t put an exclamation mark on that.

Does Toronto play today? Our E# is currently 1. If Toronto wins, we’re out.

I stand corrected. Our E# vs. Houston is 2.

Here are my two take aways from today.

First, TREVOR BAUER HAS ALREADY SAID HE WILL SIGN FOR MORE THAN ONE YEAR IF HE LIKES THE SITUATION AND CONTRACT. There’s no need to worry or comment about worrying over his insistence on one year deals. Bauer is a douche who said a douchey thing and now he’s backed off it because he realized it was a stupid thing to say.

Which leads to take away two. Mike Clevinger is a huge dick baby and I’m glad he’s hurt. He was a nothing prospect when we traded him. If getting traded, or having some old man not like your dumbf*** haircut bruises your soul that much then you should probably get hurt and stop playing baseball. It’s for your own good Mike. Then you can go off, start a hydroponic weed business and be the most self messianic asshole in that talkative field.

Also, Walsh had no hits…. so ohviously he sucks.

Trevor Bauer will NEVER sign with the Angels. Along with the whole money thing, he values everything the Angels are not. He isn’t just looking to join a winning franchise, but one that is on the cutting edge. Analytics, first rate support staff, technology, etc…He wants to join a forward thinking organization that has fully embraced the science of modern baseball. He has said all of this multiple times.

His wish list is everything the Angels are not. In fact, I couldn’t think of a worse franchise for Bauer.

That, and other reasons, would be why I didn’t say anything at all about Bauer signing with the Angels in that comment up there.

You know we are going to end the season one game out, right?

…unless we don’t! Everybody in baseball should be rooting for us or the mariners at this point!

The baseball world needs the Rangers to step up and play some good baseball these last 4 games.

Astros lose. We’re 2 1/2 games back. Halos have three games left, Astros 4.

If only the Astros were facing a decent team instead of the Rangers.

On the bright side, Lynn is pitching tomorrow, so maybe he can eke one out for them.

An interesting thing to note – will the Dodgers, who assuredly have very negative feelings towards the Astros, “lay down” and let us beat them, if it appears that doing so would prevent the Astros from reaching the playoffs?

Part of being a sports fan is being blindly hopeful in the face of long odds. Tanking is well out of the question already so we might as well hope for the best!

Yeah Astros playing Rangers and us playing Dodgers is a worst case scenario. Being good at baseball requires a lot of repetition so I doubt Dodgers give stars much off time but hey maybe we’ll get lucky.

You know, one thing in the silver lining category is that this team hasn’t quit. The season was over before it began, basically, with the pen clearly being a dumpster fire and the rotation not being much better and a number of guys we count on having off years.

But, as Eric pointed out, 17-9 since the low point of the season with a lot of those against really good teams. Trout is still laying it all out there to catch the final out of the game.

They aren’t just mailing it in when they easily could be in a weird 2020 barely matters anyway kind of season.

That’s something good. I at least feel like I’m rooting for guys that are actually trying. It makes me feel better.

Wholeheartedly agree. It’s hard to believe that we were 12-25 at one point. Since then, having gone 14-6, this team has really given me something to believe in (maybe not this year), but next year too..

We can only hope. But, for now, Angels baseball is alive and well.

Bauer is throwing gas on three-days rest, setting him up for a Sunday start if needed, and it’s honestly one of the most impressive things I’ve seen. $35 million for this man. Stat.

I’m a huge Bauer fan. I’d love this move. I’m extremely pessimistic we would ever do it, though.

Well you do have about 25 mil freed up by Teheran and Simmons

We are going to need that for Harvey, Cahill, and Allen.

Well.. Arte has previously said he does not care about the luxury tax limit.

If that is the case, then perhaps we can offer Bauer a backloaded, long-term deal. Pujols’ contract expires in one year, and Upton the year thereafter.

So – offer Bauer a backloaded 6-7 year deal with ~25mil AAV or so. Wishful thinking, I know..

Bauer has said he will only accept 1 year deals to the team that offers him max money. So all Arte has to do is open up the wallet for one year. I know we have seen our horrible share of 1 year deals year in year out, but Bauer is a 1 year deal Arte should back up the brinks truck for.

Bauer is more likely to join the Los Angeles Rams than he is the Angels. Bauer has said that he wants to join a franchise with a winning culture that is at the cutting edge of modern baseball. He has made it clear that he will only join a franchise with first rate analytics, training, technology, etc, etc…clubs that have not only been at the forefront of this movement but have also shown that they can compete for championships year in and year out. The Angels are probably the very worst franchise in this regard.

Congrad’s to Sandoval, stay strong kid. Nice play by Trout just like the twenty-one year old version. At this point of the season there is an easy answer to the question “guess who had three hits today?”. We sure got the “team” deal going on in our playing..
