LA Angels Thursday News Crash: Heads up!

A bit of Angels Related Linkage

It’s official.  Andrelton Simmons is on the ten day injured list.  About David Fletcher, Joe Maddon is quoted as saying “The analytical world does not infiltrate his methods.”  This is not really news, but it is a link about angels.  On a sadder note, former Angels manager John McNamara has died at the age of 88.

Dodgers Versus Astros Brouhaha

Early Wednesday it looked like nobody was in trouble yet for that fracas between the Dodgers and Astros.  Houston was apparently warned at the time while the Dodgers were not. Joe Kelly might still get a spanking or a time out from MLB. He did. It’s eight games. That didn’t take long. Dave Roberts was banned for one game. Joe Kelly is appealing the suspension.  Dusty Baker says the Dodgers are dirty.  I doubt if that is going to improve relations between the two teams.  He says he doesn’t expect the Astros to retaliate, but I wouldn’t expect him to say they will. He got fined for his part in the fracas. Lance McCullers fanned the flames a little bit too.  (I like the comments to this one).  Meanwhile, Dave Roberts and Joe Kelly don’t seem particularly contrite and there are calls on social media for the Dodgers to build a statue of Joe Kelly. Keynan Middleton is a fan.    Dave Roberts even thinks the Astros will not retaliate.  Only time will tell I suppose.  He planned to tell his team that it was important to stay on the bench, though. I guess he can still do that as long as he doesn’t show up at the game.

In Other Baseball News

Nick Markakis had opted out but now he has opted back in.  The scheduling shenanigans are underway as the Yankees and Orioles will play against each other while they were scheduled to play the Phillies and marlins respectively.  MLB and the players union are discussing further rule changes in the wake of the Marlins outbreak of COVID-19.  The Orioles traded Hector Velazquez to the Astros.  Watch your head, Hector.

so how long will Trout be out? Paternity leave now

As I understand it, paternity leave is nominally three days, but I assume that in this case the team will allow Trout as much time as he wants, more or less.

I believe he has to come off the paternity list after 3 games, but with a 30 man roster, they can afford to give him some extra time.

Also, my money is on Aaron Trout.

We are all aware of all the proud ex major league players with kids playing in MLB in 2020, but there is a former major league player with a resume that includes a MVP season along with a Triple Crown season and induction into the Hall of Fame that currently has a grandson hitting Home Runs including a walk off one last night. The Hall of Famer in question is Carl Yastrzemski more commonly referred to as Yaz. The press is now taken to calling the grandson the same in an adoring way because Mike Yastrzemski is the real deal apparently as he tied for the HR team led after being called up last year and is starting this season off hot too. I’m happy for all the parents and grandparents of these ML players, good for you folks to be proud. And good for these players following in the family tradition.

Where was Matt Andriese last night? Or is he starting against Houston?

I have the solution!

The MLB gave the Astros players immunity in exchange for honest testimony. So, whenever somebody throws at the Astros, the MLB should just give that player immunity in exchange for honest testimony as to whether it was intentional.

So Dusty Baker thinks the Dodgers are dirty? I guess his Astros are in a completely different category. I vote for feculent. Look it up.

Joe Maddon cost us a game period. But Billy Eppler put this pitching staff together just like he has for the prior 4 seasons, with waiver wire crap and weak trades. Epper while being handcuffed with Albert, Trout, Rendon, Upton and Simmons big contracts is still responsible for Myers. Yet we learned that Barnes can’t be used everyday. We should have won last night, oh well there is a game today to win, Go Get Them Halos!

Definitely overmanaging going on yesterday. Maddon justified it as Heaney was losing velocity, but given he was cruising simply asking Heaney how he was feeling would have clarified the situation.

Rob Manfred is just so weak. Afraid of fallout from owners for being a lot tougher on the Astros than he was, not coming down on the Red Sox nor the Yankees for also doing just what the Astros did. When it comes down to a player though he suspends him the equivalent of 13% of the season without throwing a fastball and hitting an opponent. So how long do we the fans have to put up with Manfred? Only time will tell when the owners will wise up and do the right thing.

Signals to me that Manfred is ok with the players cheating. He expects it and welcomes it. Just don’t let the owners or coaches in on the secret and all is fine.
