Major League Baseball will be suspending their operations, according to ESPN’s Jeff Passan and The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal.
After several sports leagues suspended operations yesterday, including the NBA, baseball followed suit. To anybody monitoring the situation, this was inevitable. The coronavirus, which the World Health Organization declared a pandemic yesterday, is spreading rapidly. This puts the entire baseball world at risk, whether it was the players, coaches, fans, team personnel, etc. This is the correct move but it doesn’t make it any easier to swallow for us baseball junkies.
Here’s what we know: Spring Training games will be suspended. As a result, the beginning of the regular season will likely be delayed. Once Rob Manfred and the 30 MLB owners hold a conference call, this will all be official. What happens after that is unclear. We will continue to monitor the situation and hold a discussion here. As of now, Angels Baseball is in limbo and there is no timetable for when we’ll be able to watch again.
I have random classic games playing in the background. Just like good times
What a time for my T-Mobile MLBatBAT subscription to end. Waiting for 3/24 to arrive. Come on people in charge, step it up.
For those who are concerned about the virus and for those who are sick. STAY HOME! For the rest of us who do not fear a virus like this, go on and live your lives. The only way you are going to stop this virus from spreading is for everyone to stay home for whatever amount of time is needed. We all know this is not going to happen. All it takes is one human who has it (knowing or not) to spread it to another and there you have it, on it goes. But guess what, we have to eat so we could get it at the market. We need money to work, shit, could get it there too! Sell that Drama! Or don’t be afraid of getting sick.
Check out Spain and France to see how your naive approach worked out. They also looked at Italy and assumed they’d be different but nope. Hospitals already overrun and ventilators already in short supply and they’re nowhere near their peak yet.
That’s us in 10-14 days when it becomes apparent the mentality of “let the concerned citizens do all the work so the selfish ones don’t get bored” ends up devastating our health care system and the local governments close your bars and restaurants anyway.
FYI we have about 130k ventilators in America and current low-end *conservative* estimates are 70 million American can get this disease. And those that recover show signs of reduced lung capacity.
It’s not hard to order take out and watch Netflix. Stop being dumb.
Thank you for your enlightenment and personal insult. Must be nice to be you. I will not live in fear of a virus that has an extremely high survival rate. While I do not wish to ever be sick or under the weather, I will not fear it. I know that one day I am going to die. I don’t know of what or when, that is in God’s hands. I know that now more than ever, I will appreciate a little more the things I normally enjoy doing. Hiking, going to the beach, meeting interesting people and saying hello and getting to know them while grabbing a bite to eat and have a beer. I hope that you are able to find peace brother.
Looks like I picked the wrong week to quit smoking.
And drinking
Not to mention amphetamines and sniffing glue.
Gonna be watching a lot of Airplane! with no sports being played.
Surely you can’t be serious!
I am serious. And stop calling me Shirley.
[voice type=“Terry Smith”] OUTTA HERE!!!![/voice]
[ball is caught by JUpton in front of warning track]
It’s insane to me that even just a week ago the owners thought they’d be starting on time, people in the building.
I feel like anyone who had even casually paid attention to China/Italy/South Korea would know this thing was going to force some tough decisions here. Another reminder that billionaires live in a weird bubble I guess.
I’m curious to see what baseball decides. I suspect the owners will not be willing to wait it out til mid-May when this is expected to tamper down. I could see empty stadiums for a month to at least keep some TV revenue
Going to be a short season, most likely around 135 games as this virus peters itself out. The Game will return soon enough and do it safely and sanely except for where ever the ‘Stros play. Does this mean that Trouty will finish the season strong?
Money talks – at some point. I think they’ll start playing in April to no fans. Some stadiums won’t allow fans until May 1 but I have a hard time believing they wait that long to play unless there is a CRAZY outbreak. I’m sure they will try to squeeze in all 162 games somehow if they can, but yes a shortened season is a very real possibility.
The cancellation of sports is just the first small step down the stairwell of collapse that will lead to my eventual dark overlordship of the world.
Why would you want to rule if government has no effect on anything?
Cause you still get to decide where the taxpayer money goes.
Hookers and cocaine for everyone!
And s’mores!
Ahhh. I see you’ve stolen a peek at my coronation address. It starts there, but I end with free Legos for all the kids and I ban country rap and pajamas on airplanes at the end, so it it’s got a little joy for everyone.
Only for the kids? What about those of us adults that love playing with LEGO?
Proof wedge issues work…I kinda want you to be our new overlord.
Wait until I ban all personal vehicles but issue one of these to every man woman and child on earth…. planet saved? Probably not. Dignity and materialistic pride ruined? You bet!

Hambone, is that you?
It’s time for Bender….
Shit, they are on to me.
Can we work a trade for an ace while the season is delayed?
I have a couple hundred ( at least) books on my kindle app. Maybe I’ll read some of them.
Netflix and wine it is!
Quit complainin’
It’s been nice knowing you all…
I think the lack of baseball has a higher chance of killing us than COVID-19…
We have a goodly number of games we recorded back before DVR days to watch when we got home. I think I’ll dig those up so we can at least see some baseball action.
Mia is a kid. She was born in the DVR era. 😀
“What are these black boxes with the thin brown stuff inside?” 😎
You may now proceed to a location that is not on my lawn
J/k.
And why can’t I leave them in my car on a hot day? If I don’t rewind, am I still kind?
Yes, things have changed a great deal in a short time. Although at least I’m talking about DVDs, and not tapes.
Do you think I didn’t grow up on VHS? Be kind, rewind.
We had a device used specifically for rewinding VHS tapes. I think we had every available Disney movie on VHS. I also remember the case of cassette tapes my mom had in her car when I was little, before we had a car with a CD player.
I remember how jazzed my dad was when he bought a new car and it had a CD player and a cassette player. We were living large.
We still have over 1500 VHS tapes in the basement. I’ve already done all the work to figure out what we’ve already supplanted with DVD or Blu-Ray, but I frankly hate the idea of just throwing a thousand tapes away. You’d think there’d be some way of reclaiming all that plastic, but I haven’t found one.
But we’ll keep the rest of the tapes. I am all about obsolete technologies. I mean, I have three acoustical record players.
When VHS tapes become a form of currency after society breaks down you’ll be set.
Reet. Plus, when the power grid breaks down I’ll have a record player that doesn’t need power!
I’m worried about my own mental health during this period of no baseball
Seriously. I’m dreading being cooped up at home when we start working from home next week. No sports, no social outings…
Gonna be rough.
That’s what pets are for!
I’m even more attached to my dog right now, which is saying a lot.
We should start a pet thread. That might be a nice Interregnum subject.
Pets are the big winner in all of this.
Learn a new language. An hour a day of Spanish on Dualingo and then watch some Telemundo…. you’ll watch the next season of Narcos with no subtitles baby!
Starbucks (assuming they don’t close). I find it really hard to work without conversation in the background.
How can you focus when every cough and sneeze makes you jump? lol
I ride BART to work every day. I found the most effective way to keep people at arms length is to cough and regale them with tales about my recent trip to China and Italy.
This man in Italy has the right idea…
I swore this year that I was going to write a game simulator so this lets me off the hook for now.
No Spring Training, No NBA, No NHL, No NCAA”S in any sport, No Soccer in Europe or North America, No Professional Tennis or Golf, only reruns of Gilligan’s Island and depressing news on the Networks and Cable. Tractor Pulling has been cancelled too, so back to the barn it goes. The Bloomberg channel is depressing as my retirement is seriously hurting, lol. ( Although it is a good time to buy). No Cruise Ships, No Grand Prix Racing, wow it is getting to be no fun. Stay Healthy.
Maybe it’s just the time for the world to slow down GPB.
We can still whine about Billy not signing enough pitching! It filled an entire offseason, what’s a few more months of it?
Is anyone else hungry for a hot dog?
Having fun is cancelled 😥
Time to get out the jigsaw puzzles and carom board!
You have a carom board? Damn, I DO need to get over to your place!
What the heck is a carom board?
Can I google it, or is it NSFW?
Definitely SFW. I played caroms as an elementary school kid.
If you sprinkled salt on the board, the pieces moved a lot faster!
That’s it! although we had a different version, that had two sides, rings instead of pucks, and you could play like 1001 games with it.
I almost added “and this thing that tells time,” but I stopped myself.
And we have Stratego, Twister and Mille Bornes, too!
Mlb right now
apparently, rationality has been cancelled too
If only the US treated this with more caution weeks ago
Voting matters…
This isn’t even a partisan comment, i’d take any of the last 4 administrations handling this over the current one.
Preach it…..
And you’d get the same result or worse with any of the previous 4 Administrations, only with a lot less media hysteria and political jockeying.
I don’t want to delve any further into politics here, so i’ll just respectfully disagree.
I do not care for the smirky Governor of California but he is the one pulling the strings when it comes to dealing with this virus right now and he is making the tough but accurate calls. This should not at all fall into name calling by the political parties as nothing like this has ever happened. I believe the POTUS was not informed about all the facts properly, but as a nation we will come out the other side in tact. The President cannot stop people from spreading this virus, he cannot make more hospitals over night and he could not have stopped ignorant people from returning from over seas are spreading this horrible stuff. Government is just to large to be mobilized to deal with something that spreads this quickly. People must made smart choices on their own and not wait to be told what to do or how to react.
Yawn!
This goes back years, not weeks ago……..don’t get me started.
Yay, politics! Let’s argue about whether the guys in red or blue would do a better job stopping the wind after we figure out who to blame for not stopping another thing that has not and will never be stopped…. an unvaccinated virus. Please share the bullshit from who ever is in your echo chamber that you have learned in 30 second chunks here;

Ah yes, the enlightened everyone sucks argument. You truly are a gentleman and a scholar.
Let’s just burn the fucker down, eh?
What I meant to say, to this entire topic thread, was shut the fuck up. I love a good political dust up more than the next guy, but I thought we were avoiding that here at the new site.
It is indeed enlightened to wish I could find one spot on the internet where a bunch of doofs who can’t tell a Viracella-Zoster from a Filoviridae on any given day of their lives are not spouting what ever hard take they have arise in their political easy bake oven of a brain. For example, unless YOU COULD HAVE STOPPED THIS means we should have started planning for this back in 2004 with SARS, or maybe 2011 with H1N1 then that’s a dumbshit comment given the way this virus actually works. Even if we had done that, in this political climate, there’s no way any administration would have taken the draconian measures needed to stop the spread back in January. We can’t stop 90-200 lb humans from seeping into the population much less a virus. It’s a bad side effect of a lot of the good things about our country, we will get diseases from other countries easily. We most likely always will unless we make a lot of pretty crazy changes to how we run the country.
So yeah, just about everyone sucks and if I want to hear a bunch of weak shit politically motivated drivel supported by soft fifth hand informational tidbits I’ll just go to CNN or Fox News website and read some comments there. We most likely have another eight weeks of this ahead of us, at least. We’ll need at least some place we can avoid the herpes itch of politicization or folks may start rooting for the virus by the time this is all done.
Ok, thou of the hyper sensitive political BS meter, is it true or not true that the White House dissolved “the White House’s National Security Council Directorate for Global Health Security and Biodefense” in 2018? I don’t know, maybe it wouldn’t have made a difference, maybe this is liberal tarring and feathering (it is from WaPo after all).

And yeah, this is from CNN, but is there anything in here you can dispute? This is the guy you want leading our nation’s response to a health crisis?
https://www.cnn.com/2020/03/11/politics/fact-check-trump-administration-coronavirus-28-dishonest/index.html
Disclosure. I am not on the blue team. Was raised Red. Worked on the Star Wars defense system for the Great Communicator. It is no longer Red vs. Blue, it is non-Science vs. Science.
This administration sucks more than the Red Sox and Yankees combined, or perhaps more appropriately, our current leader is the equivalent of Rob Manfred. (there, back on baseball).
I don’t give a shit. CtPG is refuge from political bull
Take it elsewhere
Like any good politician/pundit from either side I will stick to my talking point no matter what the question is.
So….. shut the fuck up. No politics here.
I dunno about any of that, I don’t watch tv news, I just listened to the man in charge speak…literally anyone else would be better, which is all I said. That’s not even partisan, it’s just an obvious fact to anyone with any sense of how we should be responding,
Unsure how you can possibly get away from politicized talk of the Coronavirus–especially here–considering it is the root cause that none of us can watch Shohei Ohtani hit a tiny leather ball into the stratosphere.
Yeah, can we PLEASE not bring up politics here. We have no control over it. I know most of the writers here are lefty, but where we all get along is our love for the Angels, and that’s all I need.
In the desperate attempt to avoid a quick descent into depression, I have tried to find some good things that may come out of this delay, and I have found one: by the time the season does start, perhaps Ohtani will be ready to pitch.
Let us all hope that the season is not delayed much longer than two weeks!
Possibly Canning too! Optimism in this depressive time is much-needed.
Get your baseball fix here : https://archive.org/details/classicmlbbaseballradio Radio broadcasts going back to 1934 and as far forward as 1973. Some Angel games in there like Dick Enberg announcing the game where Ryan struck out #383. Several all-star games as well as world series games.
Carl Hubbell’s successive strikeouts of Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Jimmie Foxx, Al Simmons and Joe Cronin from the 1934 all-star game is a treat in case you’ve never listened to it.
With more than 500 games available, you can make it until baseball recommences. Even if it’s next year. But let’s hope it doesn’t take that long…
Now you’re talking.
I have tickets (for assorted values of “have” and “tickets” since it’s a blob of bits on my phone) for the home opener. I’m sure there’s some mechanic to get a refund for those.
But, more importantly, they give away a calendar at the home opener. And I like my calendars.
How do I get my calendar?
#askingtheimportantquestions
Ok, now this shit is serious!
And that’s only because no one can find toilet paper!
If your neighborhood store is out, go to CVS and buy one item. You’ll get at least 8 feet of usable receipt.
Ouch.
Only if you don’t mind paper cuts. 😮
Haha, but true!
If one needs 144 rolls of toilet paper to get through a week, perhaps this person should have seen a doctor long before the Coronavirus.
Houston is thanking the flying spaghetti monster since this will prevent them from getting booed for several weeks.
Honestly, by the time the season starts, depending on how everything goes, fans might not have the heart to boo them anymore.
I will
You can pry my trash can lids from my cold dead hands. I shall not forget.
#NeverForget
I’m just so sad right now
