LA Angels Tuesday News Crash: QO

Eight players received qualifying offers.

The best free agent starters after Tarik Skubal.

The lockout will not affect the negotiating window for players posted by teams in NPB. The Nippon-Ham Fighters signed Franmil Reyes to a four year $40 Million contract.

The Mets claimed right-hander Jack Anderson off waivers from the Twins. They also signed infielder Christian Cairo. They signed Kyren Paris to a major league contract and then designated him for assignment. They did the same to Christian Cairo. The Red Sox designated Zack Kelly for assignment.

The Tigers declined their option on Kenley Jansen and gave him a $2 Million buyout. Clay Holmes declined his player option with the Cubs. In turn, the Cubs declined their option on Colin Rea. The Blue Jays declined their option on Myles Straw. The Orioles declined their option on Dietrich Enns. The Astros exercised their option on Isaac Paredes. The Brewers exercised their option on William Contreras while declining options on Antonio Senzatela and Gary Sanchez.

The Yankees selected Marco Luciano.

From the net:

the 2026 Arizona Fall League (AFL), Major League Baseball implemented a highly talked-about rule change specifically regulating the position of outfielders (OFs) at Salt River Fields (SRF).
The experimental rules explicitly mandate how outfielders must line up before a pitch is thrown:
• Corner Outfielders (LF & RF): Must play significantly shallower and closer to the foul lines.
• Center Fielders (CF): Must start much shallower than contemporary depth.
• Restricted Movement: Outfielders are restricted to designated zones marked by hash marks painted on the grass and cannot stray from them pre-pitch, with alignment changes shifting based on the handedness of the batter.
The Goal and Results
MLB introduced these restrictions to eliminate extreme defensive positioning, open up massive amounts of space in the left-center and right-center gaps, and boost offensive excitement.
The rule changes have produced dramatic results at Salt River Fields compared to other AFL parks:
• Triples have seen a massive 236% increase.
• Doubles have shot up by 81%.
• Total runs have surged by 34%, making games at SRF average 15.9 runs per game.

Is this a good thing? I’m on the fence. Maybe needs some tweaks.

I’m definitely in favor of more triples.

I can see another round of this next year in the AFL but my hunch is some version can hit MLB by 2030 and it will put a premium on a guy like Teo.

Corner outfieders 1st steps, back and in. CFers back pedal. Warning track power would be premium. Launch angle hitting increases %50. Hit for the fences! Strikeouts increase!

Says goodbye to WS small ball.

Not a good thing. This is like saying a NHL goalie must keep his back no less than 24 inches from net posts, must stay in the middle of the zone and not stray more than 6 inches to either side and cannot lift his glove hand more that 28 inches from the ice and cannot use his stick to block the puck. Will there be lots of scoring? Yes. Will the game be boring? Absolutely.

Besides the probability that averaging 15.9 runs a game makes the game last longer which MLB has been trying not to do, I think that increasing offense to this point will make the game boring. How many awesome outfield grabs will we miss out on, how many HRs robbed will we not see anymore? Once you see a 200% increase in triples, that won’t be exciting anymore.

One element that ties all sports together is strategy. Even MMA & boxing has strategy. Why think about where to hit the ball, just get it somewhere to the outfield and grab two bases. What would be the point of scouting when no one can get you out anyway.

Why does MLB not get that they actually are removing the human from the game? This is about as exciting as the old spinner baseball games we played when we were kids.

The only Manfred rule change I supported was the pitch clock, everything else has stripped away strategy which is a big negative for me. What you described above would remove a need for scouting reports/analysis and dumb down players who possess great tools sets. i.e. guys that can cover better than others. Pitchers should hate this.

Baseball is on the verge of losing me as a fan and honestly, thats not crushing to me as the game already been slowly eroding traditions that made the game great.

Personally, I would like to see 5 seconds added to the clock.

I would not fight that, just something to curtail the Mike Hargrove & Nomar Garcaiparra type of the league

I would modify the pitch clock so much. One – each team would get say 5 to 10 violations for the game before being penalized a pitch. Just mark the violation and move on. No need to stop the game. Most violations would be a second or two, way less than they waste calling the violation and the arguments that follow. (By the way if you argue the violation – that’s a violation too. So you just have to take your medicine.) Once you got to the 7th pitch – you could get another time out – and get another one every three pitches. (Sometimes you need to reset – and that builds great game tension too)

Personally, I think rules like this begin to over regulate the game.

Solely my opinion, but let the game remain a game. Those inclined to tinker with the rules need to find another hobby.

I hate these type of rule changes with a passion. It’s the greatest game in the world and this would be a huge change.

That said, speed would become an even bigger premium at all outfield positions and for batters too. Some can’s of corn would now be extra base hits.

Records will soon need the Manfraud Asterisk.

In looking at the current list of FAs and DFAs, I can understand why the Angels FO, assuming anyone is there, is not bothering to pick up the phone. Talk about two opposite extremes. Too Expensive on one end, and Negative WAR on the other end.

No need for a 100 loss team in good waiver position to make some waiver claims. With some of those claims DFA’d to try and stash them in the minors to better the team when you have Big K buying the team.

No more table scraps for us!

Or maybe we waiting for a new GM. Then we can pick through the bones left over after other teams hold onto their newly claimed bones with meat on them.

After doing nothing for Halloween, Angels Stadium held a Sea of Red event last night. When asked why, the reply was, “Sorry we are late, we’re your period.”
