LA Angels Monday News Crash: Busy Weekend

The Angels have selected the contract of left-hander Nicolo Pinazzi and they turned down a club option on Robert Stephenson. The Mets claimed Kyren Paris off waivers from the Angels. Best of luck “Kyreen.” They outrighted Sammy Peralta and Sebastian Rivero. Both of those guys can elect free agency and they probably will. Sammy Peralta already did.

This is the Angels’ off season outlook according to MLBTR. What do you think about the projected arb salaries? What do you think about the list of non-tender candidates?

Here is MLBs ranking of the top 30 free agents. Here are the gold glove winners.

The KBOs Hanwha Eagles will post third baseman Si Hwan Roh.

The Rays finalized Yandy Diaz’s contract for 2027.

Select Group

The Guardians selected Milan Tolentino.

The Rays declined the mutual option on Cedric Mullins. Joc Pederson declined his mutual option with the Rangers. The Athletics declined their club options on Jeffrey Springs and Jeff McNeil. The Twins declined their mutual option with Josh Bell. The Padres declined their option on Nick Pivetta. Exercised Options

Wandy Peralta exercised his player option with the Padres. The Rays used their option on Drew Rasmussen. Luis Severino will stay with the Athletics. He is exercising his option.

Minor League Deals

The Braves signed Vidal Brujan to a minor league deal. The Cubs hired Gabe Klobosits.

Which Rule 5 prospects do you think we add to the 40? I am guessing Raudi, Rada and Minacci are pretty certain. Any others y’all think?

I think I have to nickname Minacci “Piper” if they are the three. Raudi, Rada, Piper.

Is it me, or are teams hiring pitching and hitting coaching staff without a manager in place? Maybe I just missed some updates…. been busy

It seems that several teams are getting the cart before the horse. However, the loveable L’Astros managed to get the horse manure in front of the cart AND before the horse. (You know your “not the man” if you are offered a job and they are still interviewing.)

OK. Here is an example of the “dumpster dive” free agent line of thinking I have.

Jefferey Springs. Jeff has never been a star, but he’s been solid enough in the past that POBOGMVPOBPOYEAH know his name. He has a 1.29 WHIP over 600+ innings, even with a disaster of a season in west Sacramento last year. He is healthy as far as anyone knows. He is left handed.

Sign him cheap. He can start some games. If we actually have the whole “pitching lab” thing going with an FO and coaching staff that uses it make him one of the test cases. If he goes back to being a pitcher with a 1.20 WHIP we will be happy. More importantly, some team out there will be happy to trade us a couple prospects for him.

You gotta wonder. Was Maddux fired because the angels spent a bunch of money on pitching chirp chirp beep beep and he wasn’t even using it?

Pitching coach matters MORE THAN THE FIELD MANAGER.
As the self proclaimed speaker of the 70% ers of CTPG (usually also wrong about baseball matters too at 70%….LOL) you should know this already. Especially for a bad team (yep, were gonna be really bad for at least till 2028).
PS what ever happened to that Trash Panda team from 2022? They had a winning record and some good players……LOL Don’t worry the 2010 Seattle Mariners had a bunch of good prospects also…..DIDN’T MATTER, DID IT?

Would bringing in a player like Joc Pederson make sense? One year plus option. Power lefty bat. Can he still play some defense? 1B? Might be a solid pick-up?

I’d be in favor of it. He’d improve the roster

We already have Mike Trout in the DH that provides bad defense somewhere mix. So we’d be worse off that way. But if he hits we can trade him.

Thing is, will anyone want him if he doesn’t really solve positional issues? I’m meh on him. He’s basically a white, left handed Jorge Soler (before Soler came to the burial ground). But signing him wouldn’t really HURT anything I don’t think….. accept easily frustrated fanatic’s angina.

Rhett said no Angels have a chance for Silver Slugger?

Mike? Mike. While not a slam dunk, I thought he was fairly close and has a chance.

Trout should win one. I actually wrote a piece stating so.

That MLBTR article is a giant “nothing burger”.

Do better MLBTR.

Well. There was a deadline. And they can’t just say “Team is about 89% need. Wait till new ownerz hire new guyz.”

Josh Lowe – $3.6 million? Is it just me or does that seem way too high?

Senator_John_Blutarsky

Yep – way too high.

It’s not just you. I suppose that MLBTR is using prior year’s raises for their decisions, but a nearly 40% increase for a what was essentially replacement level seems high to me too.

There’s a baseball truism that if you had a skill you own it. JoshLowe was a very good but oft injured player at one point. If they just got a decent hitting coach or sent him to something like Driveline to fix him, he is the left handed power speed OF that could really help us. I’d be inclined to roll the dice on that. All this assumes that the new front office is way smarter than Perry Minasian and his band of unloveable losers.

I’d be careful with Driveline. They got Caleb Durbin trying to pull the ball because that’s what the Exit Velo numbers said and it messed him up. Clearly that was not the thought process in Milwaukee – and Gradum helped fix him after his horrific start. Although Driveline has successfully done work with some other guys, Travis Bazzana for example, their tenure in Boston was short lived and not sure they’re the right choice – although hopefully someone can clean him up and he can regain the early potential he flashed.

This is correct. As a guy who followed the Rays I know he is very talented. I also know his mom got brain cancer, wasted away for three years, and died in Spring Training last march.Lowe was pretty distracted by this pesky little problem because he is an asshole that doesn’t really want to play baseball.

Still, there is an outside shot that he is a slightly different player when his mom isn’t dying. If that’s the case then he is a possible 30/30 guy. Would it help if Angels fanatics shit all over him some more to give him fuel and grit? Almost certainly. We can make him care. We can make him a star.

Realistically, the way I see it, we do not have an outfield prospect that is as talented as Lowe. No. Not Rada. If we look at him as a guy who could “prospectively” get his career on track, then he’s worth retaining and giving coaching and playing time. We also aren’t risking much, unless you really believe Wade Meckler is white Willie McGee.

Lowe’s wRC+ by season:

2023: 130. Studly.
2024: 98 Solid
2025: 79 No bueno
2026: 76 Shitty

His mom’s health and death had to have an impact, but he also has a K rate north of 30% outside of his 2023 breakout year. He hits the ball hard when he hits it but he misses it a ton. That’s a trait that seems to get exploited by modern pitchers.

It doesn’t matter. They will cut him if it’s that high and offer him a lower priced deal to stay if they want.

I really think it will be under $2 million. I’m picturing $1.6 to $1.8. (Let me pull those out of my ass.)

The biggest pay cut an arbitration guy can take is 20% and Lowe earned $2.6 million last year. So the lowest the Angels could legally sign him for is $2.08 million.

Usually players only take a cut because they were hurt all year. Lowe was not hurt, he just sucked.

Lowe will be DFA’d so the projection will not come into play.

Dude is just not MLB caliber. He’ll sign a minors deal somewhere as camps begin.
