LA Angels Weekend News Crash: Out with the Old

Finally some news in Angels land this week, none of it unexpected. But the news did further prove that Stan Kroenke is running the team, not Arte Moreno.

First came news that Kurt Suzuki will no longer manage the team. A truly great guy who was just out of his depth at the helm of the team, Suzuki has an option to stick around in an assistant role. Just who will lead the team next year? My money says it will not be Albert Pujols. Beyond that it is anybody’s guess and here are nine dark horse candidates.

But the real action this off season will happen in the executive suites. When John Mozeliak initially signed on with the Angels he stated he wanted to set up a new baseball operations department and find a long term GM. He doubled down on that Wednesday saying he will step aside once Kroenke’s team is in place.

So now we have some clarity on how the transition will happen and I love what this means for the Angels future.

We have no idea which path Team Kroenke will take, but a winning owner inheriting a very clean payroll ledger is a great combination to start a complete makeover.

And make no mistake, Kroenke is in charge as of now. The press release regarding Suzuki stated the Angels are working with Kroenke to find the new manager. And Mo is clearly handling the transition to Kroenke.

And now for a text break. This kid is impressing me more now than he did at the end of the season. Notice how he shortens his swing a bit and shoots the 99 MPH heater to the opposite field. He was trying to pull that for a bomb last month.

Nimmala was named the AFL’s Hitter of the Week after going on a torrid run with 2 triples, 2 doubles, 12 total bases, an insane 1.091 SLG and 1.758 OPS. He’s giving us reasons to dream. And he’s not alone, the Angels contingent in the AFL is holding its own quite well.

But back to reality. The Angels will hire both a Player of Baseball Operations and a GM. This is the type of setup the big boys run and is a clear sign on how Kroenke will run things. I still think Randy Flores is an ideal candidate for the GM gig even if the Mo connection is no longer in Anaheim.

The future of this team needs to be developed through the draft and trades then supplemented with free agent talent. But make no mistake about it, even Tarik Skubal says free agents view the Angels differently under Kroenke than they did under Arte.

And with lots of digital space to fill, pondering about free agents is a great exercise this time of year.

Should the Angels look to Japanese Triple Crown winner Teruaki Sato as a power bat?

And let’s face it, we need a complete redo on the bullpen. Maybe a trio of Dodgers arms could fix the unit?

Jazz Chisholm Jr. is a name that keeps getting associated with the Angels but there are far more cons than pros to signing him.

I do think the Angels could really speed up the rebuild by signing top of the line pitching. That would free up trades of some young pitching for other players and more prospects. Imagine picking up Peralta and maybe Mize then trading Detmers.

Let’s do another text break. One where somebody somewhat famous agrees with me. Ok, here’s Kevin Pillar on how Kroenke’s ownership changes things.

This will take time, for sure. Steelgolf will probably tell you that the demo work reveals the full scope needed for the rebuild and the demo is just getting started. Signing a new assistant GM is not as sexy as signing a new second baseman, but it is more important. Especially at this time in the franchise’s history.

For once there is an emphasis on homegrown players on the roster. Some of that is desperation by Perry but the farm is moving in the right direction.

And how awesome was it watching Jo Adell have some huge moments in the playoffs? Jo is a truly great guy and I loved seeing it. So far the Adell for Cozart trade looks like it was was win for both clubs.

World Series time:

Two teams I love watching are meeting in the Fall Classic. Both were longshots to make the big dance and sports books are going to lose no matter who wins.

The hand wringing over low ratings might be overblown but there will be a drop off from the NY/LA series of a couple years ago.

You can look at several preview pieces or you can just cut to FanGraphs and read the most comprehensive one.

Enjoy your weekend and link what I missed. I’ll be spending time with my family and watching the World Series (and a really nice fight between Navarratte and Foster tomorrow night.) I’ll get to see my parents and some nephews this weekend which is always a bonus.

Don’t know what to make of this list, or maybe there is nothing to “make” from it. Still a very interesting list.

BTW, in retrospect, it’s no wonder Moreno sold the team. Anaheim won’t renew the stadium lease, partially because of the previous malarkey, and unreasonable add-on/requests. In addition, almost no SoCal city will offer financial assistance to build a new stadium and such.

When you think about it, Moreno did accomplish a first with the Halos, their first 100 loss season.

Here is an example of what to expect by picking 1st or 2nd on the Waiver Wire. Obviously the Angels and 28 others said “No Thanks.” But 5 guys 27-31 off a team that lost 93 will provide no help. There may be a nugget or two but mostly it will be useless pickings.

A buddy of mine just flew on a plane from the DR with Albert. Both were connecting in Miami. I sure hope he’s not headed to Anaheim.

Aside note: If you ever saw Color of Money – the actor who played Grady Seasons was a professional pool player named Keith McCready. In the mid 90’s I lived in Vegas and was a pretty strong one pocket player. Good enough – that I’d play almost anyone for money. Didn’t normally want to play a pro – but he was so sloshed. Must have had 8 to 10 – 40oz tankards by himself along with shots. The drinks just kept coming and he was putting them back so fast. Have never seen someone drink that much. He still played almost perfectly and whooped me up pretty good (I want to say $800). Never seen someone so drunk play so well. I won one game – and barely.

Big $800 lesson – pros are pros for a reason. I honestly thought it was fake beer after a while, but it was my local place, and I intentionally watched them pour one right from the tap. The alcohol didn’t affect his game one single bit. He was making every makable shot and then some. And let me tell you – I didn’t play bad at all. He was just that good. One Pocket is a total strategy game – and he played like a chess master too. It was crazy. We played 10 games and he missed virtually nothing makable.

What is the opposite of ‘hot stove’?
🥶 🥶

since the season ended, nothing has been done by team, and the only note for the Halos:

October 8, 2026 — Jeimer Candelario (3B): Refused his minor-league assignment and elected free agency.

I expect it to be this way till early 2027 and the arrival of KSE.

Perry always used to sign a AAAA outfielder about November 2. I wonder if that tradition will continue.

Angels Top 2026 Draftee producer

Gavin Grahovac, 3B (No. 10)
After missing most of his sophomore year at Texas A&M because of a torn left labrum, Grahovac returned to hit 22 homers and greatly cut down his strikeout rate in 2026, helping him land in the third round. He kept on mashing during a 24-game debut in the Single-A California League, with 14 extra-base hits (eight homers) in 92 at-bats for a 1.043 OPS.

You know at times when you watch a TV show. You look up and there is 20 minutes left and they have to save the hero, get the lady star out of a dungeon, find out what disease another has, etc. (Just way too much to get done in 20 minutes.) That is where I am with the Angels. Set the roster in November, hire a GM, hire a POBO, hire a Manager and staff, get the minor leagues on the same page, rule 5 draft, etc. etc. etc.

Maybe we need to skip 2027 entirely but that can’t happen. I am looking forward to the next 20 minutes/days/weeks/months. EXCITED.

Off topic – why in the hell does Florida have two teams? They should have none. Neither team draws squat. Their stadiums are awful. No one in the baseball universe cares about baseball in that awful state. Move these teams to cities where they can thrive. I would move Arizona as well. Make Florida and Arizona spring training locations only. (Angels spring games in Palm Springs again. And make the LAD go back to Vero Beach – while we are at it.)

About 3.42 million people lived in the Tampa, FL area in 2024. Population estimates of the Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater, FL Metro Area, 2010–2024.

About 6.46 million people lived in the Miami, FL area in 2024.
Population estimates of the Miami-Fort Lauderdale-West Palm Beach, FL Metro Area, 2020–2024.

Above is from USA Facts. Other sources have similar numbers. Feel free to find other areas in the U.S. that do not already have a baseball team in that area that has similar numbers to support a baseball team and who want to support the building of an indoor stadium and will withstand severe hail storms and tornados.

What does population matter? If the people don’t go, who gives a crap about numbers. Green Bay has a football team that thrives. Portland? Salt Lake? Indianapolis? Raleigh? Lots of option including Mexico City. Florida won’t support one team let alone two.
To gitch – it has nothing to do with the past – it has to do with the future.

Green Bay is not a good comparison since they have been legend for decades. Tampa and Miami draw 1 to 1.5 million a year. Surprising for Miami since that is a 6 million area but the team constantly sucks. As an owner I want to know the area can support my investment. You have to figure what your ROI is after spending billions on a stadium and creating the organization and then billions more just to enter the MLB club.

Obviously this can be done. There are 30 teams. But if I was the billionaire this is the last thing I’d do with my money. I don’t think the team would be sellable in 10 years.

Kind of interesting. Some time back with nearly 80-82 record like the Angels they drew about 1.5m. Angels drew 3+m with that record.

Florida checks the boxes that the MLB has as “core pillars” for all teams. In addition, many players love Florida. As such MLBPA loves Florida. Why? It’s simple: follow the money.

Florida Individual Income Tax: 0% on wages, salaries, retirement income, Social Security, pensions, and capital gains.

The Three Core Pillars to have an MLB team (expansion)

To be taken seriously by MLB’s expansion committee, a city must have three interlocking components fully solidified:

  1. A Capital-Rich Ownership Group: Bids must be anchored by a prominent billionaire investor or heavy-hitting corporate coalition. This group must have the liquid capital to pay an expansion fee expected to range between $2 billion and $2.5 billion just for the right to join the league—before accounting for any stadium costs or team payroll.
  2. Secured Stadium Funding: The league requires a transparent public-private financing model. Bids that rely purely on “expected” corporate sponsorships or uncertain tax proposals fall behind markets that have secured hundreds of millions of dollars in formal state-backed legislation or development funds.
  3. A Locked-In Stadium Site: The ownership group must control a concrete, viable plot of land. MLB strongly favors central, downtown urban properties with proximity to public transit, high walkability, and potential for lucrative surrounding mixed-use real estate development.

Demographic & Market Requirements

If a city passes the infrastructure hurdles, MLB evaluates its long-term commercial sustainability using the following metrics:

  • Geographic Alignment for scheduling purposes.
  • Media Market Size & TV Territory: The market must be large enough to generate high local television and streaming viewership. Furthermore, the city cannot heavily encroach on the protected broadcast territories of existing clubs without a plan to legally or financially compensate them (e.g., negotiating territory with the Atlanta Braves if expanding to Nashville).
  • Corporate Sponsorship Base: The metropolitan area must have a dense concentration of Fortune 500/1000 companies or large regional enterprises capable of purchasing expensive stadium naming rights, luxury suites, and multi-year corporate sponsorships.

Simplified, it’s (politics) a 50/50 thing. One could agree with one of those 50% and still find any number of reasons to dislike shÅte. It’s literally a take your pick. I imagine most the people who would vouch for him have been/are on his payroll and/or think they’ll receive some sort of benefit by leg wrapping.

Separately, it’s not hard to see how Arte built his empire, got high on his own supply of ego/farts, thought he knew better than everyone else and acted on par.

No matter what, his business investment had some otherworldly ROI while literally doing nothing to leave the team better than he found it. In fact, he did quite the opposite.

We have some brighter days ahead!

There were two teams sold this year, padres and angels unless I’m mistaken.

Seidler’s left the Padres organization in a MUCH better state for Feliciano. Moores did the same for Seidler. Both those owners left it better than they found it. Were good stewards of the team for us fans if you will.

Disney, Arte, Stan K

Of the 3, 2 will have left it better than when they started. We’ve lived it, no need to explain further.

I don’t think arte’s politics matching mine would make me less inclined to be sick of the bad job he was doing. I DO think his politics being different from a fans makes it so that some fans look for EVERY damn reason to keen and wail about the man. Where as if he were a leather daddy who gives his fluids to the fight for social equalness many of these same fans would complain…. differently…. about less things.

But Politics wouldn’t make people complain about Arte much at all if he had five rings.

I assure you it has little to do with politics as most owners are on the same side.

Arte did everything imaginable to destroy this franchise. He inherited a World Series championship team, was gifted 2 of the greatest baseball players ever, and managed to run up one of the longest current playoff droughts in sports.

Fuck (October) Arte
