LA Angels Tuesday News Crash: Predictions

Here is the Predictions Thread from the start of the season. I am embarrassingly bad at that stuff but I own it.

Mike Trout says he is excited for what the future holds and he’s looking forward to a good 2027.

You can vote for the 2026 All MLB Team here.

Josh Jung suffered a fractured right hand after being hit by a pitch on Friday. The Rangers didn’t make the playoffs anyway so he has several months to convalesce. Kyle Bradish is having hernia surgery today.

The Mariners have shown four coaches the door in the wake of canning Manager Dan Wilson. The Twins just fired their pitching coach.

The Cardinals claimed right-hander Chase Hampton off waivers from the Nationals.

The Angels team ERA and FIP were 3/4 of run better than last year, which is a lot, and their team OPS+ was nearly identical. They really should have won more games than they did. Even as a bad team, they underachieved.

Haven’t posted in a while but I see you all got exactly what you wanted this season:

Perry = fired
Arte = finally sold the team (who knew shirtless protests worked)
Soler = cut
Moncada = DNP
Maddux = fired
Soriano =traded
O’Hoppe = traded
Adell= traded
kids = playing
100 loses = accomplished (take that Arte)

I’m sure I missed some things. Yeah I know Detmers and Neto (the team’s two best players were not dealt away), and Suzuki wasn’t taken out to the parking lot and left by the dumpster, but hey you don’t get everything you wish for from the baseball gods. Who do you think you are – the Dodgers?

It should feel like Christmas morning around here for the next, I don’t know, couple years? Congrats.

I’m not sure this has been said on this platform but pretty damn disgusting that Dan Wilson was sent out to Sunday’s postgame presser to address the less than stellar season and to announce that he had been fired. He was visibly distraught as he and his family make Seattle their home, back from the time he played for the organization. The job meant a lot to him.

Jerry Dippto is such a fucking clown and I truly hope he’s next. He should be.

Yeah I don’t know that anything that happened this year to Seattle can be blamed on him. Raleigh went from MVP to replacement level.

I don’t blame Derpo for most of the Angels drama, that was Soth and Arte too. But Derpo is such a modern twerp. Just the terms he uses and the way he talks nothingspeak reminds me of a politician. His creepy nervous smile…. ung.

And he’s full of shit. He says their will be a long list of guys who want to manage there cause the city, fans, roster…. well, that roster just bit a huge chunk of ass. The weather sucks. The people kinda suck. Oh, and you can get fired the year after you almost make the WS cause your players fell off a cliff.

Sure. Yeah. Someone will want the job. But they thought they could lure Vogt away from Cleveland? I laugh.

Sorry if this is a repost, but I find this situation a bit odd. Should the wall have been padded? Absolutely. That said, running into walls and fences has always been part of the game of baseball.

From ESPN: A’s player sues Detroit Tigers for on-field injury

Should Taylor Ward have sued the Angels when he faceplanted into the wall at the Big A? Should Mo Vaughn have sued the Angels because there were no dugout railings when he injured himself? Should an NFL player sue after colliding with a bench on the sideline? Or should an NBA player sue if they’re injured by a shattered backboard crashing down during play?

Granted, those are somewhat extreme examples, but they illustrate the same basic point: sports inherently involve risks that can result in unusual or even severe injuries. Just as a player can crash into a wall chasing a fly ball, a player can slide into a fence, collide with sideline equipment, or be injured by other aspects of the playing environment. While reasonable safety measures should certainly be in place, it’s difficult for me to see how every injury resulting from a foreseeable part of the game automatically becomes grounds for a lawsuit.

TrojanBoiler

Yeah, without knowing the details this seems ridiculously petty to me. Especially given that he only missed a month and didn’t sustain any major injuries.

It’s possible that the fence was just egregiously sharp and exposed to a level beyond reason, but hard to determine that from the article.

I was wondering how well Trout’s season stacked up as an “old man” at 34. Stats are from Baseball Reference, and the columns are age, name, WAR and Offensive WAR:
38+ Goldschmidt 1.3 1.0
37 Rojas 0.8 0.7
36 Freeman 2.7 2.6
35 Muncy 4.1 3.9
35 Arenado 3.4 3.9
34 Contreras 4.6 4.5
34 Trout 4.1 4.8
33 Betts 3.9 3.2
33 Harper 3.1 3.7
The list includes the highest WAR by age plus any other player with a WAR of 3 or higher. Trout isn’t an MVP level player anymore, but isn’t useless either.

This is actually pretty eye-opening. So basically he’s playing at an elite level for his age. Highest offensive WAR for any player 33 or older.

Had to look up best WAR for an age 34 season and saw a lot of the expected names with one surprise.

Honus Wagner 11.4
Willie Mays 11.2
Dan Brouthers 8.8
Lou Gehrig 8.2
Eddie Stanky 8.2
Babe Ruth 8.0

1950 was Stanky’s best season by far, leading the NL in WAR, Walks and OBP, finishing 3rd in the MVP vote.

Moz likes analytics and yet Meckler was very seldom higher up in the line-up. Neto was leading off and yet he had the most power and would have done better in the third slot you would think. Suzuki may return but I lean more towards Kurt being gone.

And Soler and Lowe played constantly because “they are just around the corner”.
No, Kurt, they were not. And if you looked at any data you would have seen that.

Could be an agreement has already been signed that Arte would pay KSE a bunch of bucks if Arte pulls the plug. I’m guessing. Sometimes that happens.

Exactly. “Say what I want you to say! Feel MY FEELZ!” is stupid dickhead fan behavior, unless that fan is a ten year old girl. But if the team actually goes out and signs Kurt on for another season that’s an actual thing that actually happened. THEN it’s time to write a strongly worded letter or something.

cookmeister

It’s just words.

What did we expect him to say? “Kurt was horrible this year and we are definitely not bringing him back”?

Moz’s job is up in the air too.

I have had no direct talks with Mo but as I stated on Friday the team gave Suzuki more autonomy down the stretch and seem to be evaluating him based on that.

Given the fact the Angels will have a young team that will lose plenty, perhaps Mo likes Suzuki’s demeanor. He is optimistic to a fault.

But I also think Mo is giving lip service to a guy he personally likes in the quote above.

I could overlook most of what he did but hitting Neto leadoff and Meckler 3rd is just beyond comprehension. Also, as bad as the team was, and they were really bad, I didn’t see any ways in which he made a positive difference. We just continued to play bad defense, make bad decisions, and play lackadaisically all the way through. He was a nice guy and everybody’s buddy who produced absolutely nothing. Next year is meaningless so I don’t really care, but when it comes time to get serious, they’ll need a real manager.

Neto leading off was almost as bad as having Schanuel hitting behind Trout for most of the year.

His lineups did not change after he had autonomy. Which tells us all we need to know.

It’s almost like by putting Neto in the leadoff position they were trying to induce him to be more selective at the plate. Netos walk rate increased over the previous years.

Seeing Kyle Bradish brings up an interesting thought, in my opinion. Concerning prospects. I was watching the Orioles farm teams in 2020-25. You can see there are some future MLB players and some big time busts on this team. My opinion then was the 3 aces for the Orioles in 2023 and beyond were Bradish, GRod, and Brnovich (with Bautista as closer). All four have suffered injury at some point.

But Brnovich stuck in AA ball at the end. Prospects are just that Prospects. Drafting is important but player development is much more important, again just my opinion. But those guys were unhittable back then – in AA ball.

Exactly. Caden Dana is stuck. Walbert Urena is apparently good. Klassen and Johnson were stuck, then showed some signs of being unstuck and possibly being good. Of those four, Dana and Klassen are the guys who got top prospect attention.

This is why a rebuilding team needs to take advantage of even the slightest possibility of an advantage in gathering together prospective MLB players. Then it needs to have the scouts and coaches to assess those opportunities that are hopefully geeked to the max. Then it needs those coaches and even more coaching to develop those kids. THEN you need to give a lot of these kidz the chance to try, fail, and try some more in the MLB.

Rinse. Repeat. Till about 35-50 prospects produce fifteen useful MLB players and hopefully a couple all star level guys.

Then, to stay successful, you need to keep that process running. Once you are at a high level of success you lose the advantages a loser has, but you gain the perception advantage, where 16 year olds in the Dominican and Japan want to play for you. You also lose the ability to play kidz as much, but you gain the freedom to trade lots of kidz for everyone’s FA to be stars.

But you’ve got to kick it off with as many of the best kidz you can get piled into the pot as possible. If you do it piecemeal you wind up with a couple talented players at a time that you have to trade at the deadline as their arb years wane and you finish with 78 wins.

We kind of have that first part down, since we lost 100 games and secured that second worst record (pick 32, waiver wire superiority over A’s). Still would’ve had that with 99 losses but I digress.

rebuilding team needs to take advantage of even the slightest possibility of an advantage in gathering together prospective MLB players

It’s the everything else part we don’t have. Shit development (remember we’ve been promoting everyone drafted almost straight to MLB). Shit coaching, scouting, etc.

We’ve never truly rebuilt or “reloaded” as owners/GMs like to say even with an organization that is clearly on a downward trajectory. But we made it! Mostly. Now we just have to sit back and watch daddy warbucks come back home with the cigarettes and milk he left to get 24 years ago, buy our love back, and all will be forgiven!!!

What I think is required, and what we may actually get, is a systematic retooling of the Org. Like a break-it-apart to rebuild it better type thing. I would welcome that. From the lowest level of the minors to the highest echelon of the Org – a rebuild on the largest and most comprehensive scale.

I think we will get what we want. At least the mindset seems to be there.

What really stood out to me in Mcllvaine’s draft day meetings was the fact he spoke openly about creating waves of players at the minor league level. The talk was all about creating cores at each level and having them move upwards together.

There was no a single “quick to the Major Leagues” comment in either meeting. He had just drafted the NCAA batting champion and was talking about having him in A ball next year.

Keeping talent on the farm is a big first step. Now for Kroenke to get the facilities, analytics, and coaching system in place.

gitchogritchoffmypettis

Yep. We have “won” the chance to pick up some slightly better lotto tickets and used items than almost all the other teams. Now all we have to do is figure out who to pick up and how to make them good players. Is easy.
