It’ll be interesting to see if Nimmala’s surge will change how he’s perceived in farm rankings, or if he’ll simply hold steady, as he’s already highly ranked.

This current stretch is the best baseball he’s played in his pro career, no?

I wonder if the Jays still do the trade today.

Edit: I just want to add, I know prospect lists are more tier lists than anything. What I’m saying here is, I wonder if prospect evaluators have an up arrow on him big enough to bring him up into the next tier.

I’m excited to read end of season write-ups on him to see if they’ve seen any big/encouraging changes.

One thing I’ve been wondering about with the pending CBA changes: could the Angels somehow be an opportunistic beneficiary of a new salary cap/floor?

Obviously, we have no idea what the final CBA will actually look like, and I’m sure some of the teams currently carrying huge payrolls will have some sort of grandfathering or transition period. But if a cap ultimately forces some of those teams to shed salary, I wonder if there could be an opportunity for the Angels to take on some contracts in exchange for additional prospects. Basically, use our payroll flexibility as an asset and turn it into prospect capital.

I’m not even sure that would necessarily be the best course for the team, just something I’ve been thinking about. I’ve been wanting to “buy” prospects for years lol.

The other interesting wrinkle is free agency. If teams that are above the eventual cap are restricted from adding significant FA money until they get their payrolls down, does that potentially create more room for the Angels to be players in the market? Could that even result in some of these players signing for less than they otherwise would because there are fewer teams able to bid (looking at you, Dodgers)?

Although, the more I think about that last part, the more I have a hard time imagining MLB actually designing the system in a way that meaningfully removes suitors for a guy like Skubal.

And what if a new CBA makes it so that the cheap & smart teams like the Rays, Brewers, Cle, etc start having to buy FA.

Final note: I was always against a salary cap in MLB. I didn’t care that the Yankees or whoever had a huge payroll because the pre-2015 Angels could still compete and beat them. Well-run orgs will find a way. To me, the bigger competitive-balance issue is teams with lackluster ownership (Angels) and/or a lackluster front office (also Angels).

But I think the Dodgers took things too far. They took advantage of the system and shoved their bottomless spending ways in everyone’s faces to the point that it couldn’t be ignored anymore. Unfortunate.

Would the NBA model with a one-time signing of a veteran FA be useful? I agree that there is opportunity (potentially) for the Angels here, and the long-term shedding of salary (mainly due to Arte not wanting to pay people) could mean with have the chance to sign FA that are costed out of elsewhere (or with Kroenke, we could out compete them, with our increased space).

But, yes, there could be some salaries that need to be shed in the event of a cap or luxury tax with teeth (which I think we get). There will also be teams that need to add salary quickly to meet the floor.

Given the Angels low payroll and obvious roster needs there could be a pickup or two made that could help the team in the short term.

I believe they received this when McCourt was on the verge of bankruptcy, so the league was trying to help the franchise. Crazy that it remained intact after the team was sold.

It makes no sense that a deal cut with the previous owner regarding the previous TV deal but somehow they pulled it off.

I believe it was Ken Rosenthal who said at the time that arrangement would create a league of the Dodgers and everybody else.

Yes, and this is exactly why the players are against a cap.

Conversely though, a floor would have a similar but opposite effect in that it will force teams to be in the market that otherwise wouldn’t be.

I’m all for both IF the net gain to the players from the floor is greater than the likely loss due to a cap. And from what I’ve seen the owners proposal would do that.

Ultimately I think we end up with no salary cap but a luxury tax system with some teeth, some modification of the deferral loophole, and a floor that can only happen with increased revenue sharing.

The big difference in owning a MLB franchise and a franchise in other sports is that fans in Baseball like to get into stats and the history of the game than any of the others. If one were to say “714” or to start out referring to 3000 in talking about MLB what would think the conversion is going to be. Ruth, career hits or career strikeouts by pitchers would be very easy to reply in referencing those MLB numbers to. Numbers stayed about equal from 1900 to now in most categories such as hits or runs scored or rbi, only Ruth and Gehrig and Foxx in the twenties and early thirties changed the power numbers and they stayed basically even until the 1990’s and PEDS came along.

Now things are changing because the new owners don’t care about the history of the game and just want to see as many teams as possible in the Playoffs which equates to more money. Having less rounds in the draft saves a lot of money as does in cutting down on the amount of minor league teams to fund. Heck even Arturo found more ways of cutting back to fill his pockets such as cutting down the amount of front office employees and cutting the scouting dept. down.

The most popular Hall of Fame for a sport is the MLBHOF and it’s not like flying into John Wayne or Orlando to see Disneyland or Disney World, it is in a small burg called Cooperstown and once a year it blows up with tourists who book rooms 50 miles away just for introductions of the new guys because of numbers.

Last but most important to the owners is the return to investment is expansion and getting a piece of the 6-7 billion the two new kids will pay to play. Heck even the Halos sold for 4 billion without a stadium deal in play. (Remember your reaction to when the Dodgers sold for 2 billion without the parking lot!)

Trout will be remembered for a long time, especially in the OC, and statues erected in his honor in Angels history out in front of whatever type of stadium he puts up and someday many will remember his HR totals too.

I really like numbers but am finding myself less and less interested in baseball statistics through the years.

You nailed with the numbers. Any decent baseball fan can tell you Hank Aaron holds the legitimate HR record with 755. But nobody knows how many yards the top RB in the NFL racked up nor the points total for the highest NBA scorer.

Obviously baseball numbers are lower, but they are also more sacred. And baseball has long been considered a thinking person’s sport.

Post season numbers do not factor into records, though.

That is a very good point. I am a huge NFL fan and couldn’t even tell you the record for most TD passes which is a smaller and more reasonable number.

At one point I did know some of the single season records off the top of my head, but I’ve had kids since then and my brain doesn’t work anymore.

I think your posted is “dated.” I had a grandpa who had me read the sports page front to back every day. This was before I was in the first grade. I knew that Mel Off hit 511 home runs and Cy Young won 511 games. But my young’un mind thought, one needs to win another or hit a home run so they are not “tied.”

We knew DiMaggio’s hit streak at 56. We knew every 20 game winner but none who won 19. So we knew Johnny Antonelli for that one reason and Mel Parnell twice. Those were old conversations about who was the best. Nobody talked about WHIP or XFIP. It was batting average, and who won the World Series in how many game. Just a different time period. But if anyone is old enough, they have those same memories. MLB didn’t exist West of St Louis.

There is absolutely no truth to the idea WE MUST get a stud SS in return for Neto in a trade. I’ll take a stud “anything” or two.

I’d say we are lucky he picked up his game because we can have one of two fairly good outcomes. We sign him to be a long term leader type. OK, kind of a stupid waste of money but not the end of the world. Or we trade him and get a pretty good haul of prospects back. Also nice.

Very good hitting and running SS are not easy to find just ask the Padres or the Rays or the Yankees. Trading Neto while is in his prime when we need an experienced leader for all our yuts to see is more important than more youth at this point.

I’m in the trade Neto boat. The Angels are unlikely to be decent again for at least 2 seasons which takes us beyond his control. So if we can get some high ranking and talented youth for him I am all for it. Otherwise he’s a decent player on a crappy team and there is no long term value in that.

A stud SS should not be the return the Angels are looking for in a potential Neto trade. This is a current team that should be looking for upside. Nimmala is the highest rated prospect on the team and plays SS. If Neto is traded, the Angels should be hoping that Nimmala is the long term answer and Denzer could be the stopgap.

With a potentially much improved rotation, the Angels could be better next season. I think there are too many lineup holes to say they could be good.

I’m fine with extending Neto. I’m fine with trading Neto for a good collection of younger players. The Angels are in a situation in which their best position player and their best prospect play the same position. It would be OK to keep both and figure that they might have to move one to an alternate position. It’s also ok to trade one for an improvement.

The free agent market is terrible this offseason for position players, so there could be some really good offers for Neto.

I don’t like the idea of just holding Neto without an extension.

I am happy with Guzman at 3B.

I am happy keeping Neto (the we need a leader on the team somewhere argument is very valid – it isn’t in the pitching staff and Trout, for all his good qualities, is low key).

I like Detmers, Rodriguez, Klassen, Johnson, Urena and I think they could (new pitchers often hit a wall, so with some salt here) be a good rotation – and we still have players in the pipeline. We even have some decent pieces in the pen (if the second half is to be believed).

I don’t know if we have a 2B, I am not convinced about the OF (not that Trout is or should move), or DH. C is a hole to fill, and perhaps 1B too (can Shanuel make it long term – he isn’t a traditional bat first 1B). It would be nice to not have 100 holes to fill.

2027 polls – please answer both questions:

1. how will the lockout’s biggest issue resolve?

A) a salary cap and floor accepted by the union likely in exchange for a sharing of a higher % of overall league revenue from all sources.

B) A higher luxury tax on teams that spend in excess of a certain established amount.

C) More revenue sharing to the smaller market teams and a floor but no cap.

D) No change to the current system (ie no cap, no floor, no higher tax and no increased revenue sharing). In other words status quo.

2. When will the Lockout resolve?

A) Prior to the start of regular Spring Training (ie no impact on the season).

B) Just prior to the scheduled start of the 2027 season resulting in an abridged Spring Training but a full season of baseball.

C) Around May/June/July resulting in a shortened 2027 season.

D) No new agreement in time to save MLB games in 2027.

Part One. This time around will be brutally a very tough fight and none of the choices offered are going to be the end all.
Part Two. They may be worth Billions but the payments on the loans to finance the teams is higher than a kite. The owners have always thought they are in the driver’s seat, but they are not. These owners are different than those from 94-95 in that overall, they don’t care about the game (Manfraud?), it is now more than ever not about the fans or players, just about how to make more money than ever. I think we will see a 2020 season or 1981 fiasco land on us and to save the sport a lively baseball and more rule changes. So, I believe “C” is my choice.

I don’t see any scenario where the players reduce their take of the revenue. The only way ownership gets a hard topside cap is to provide another revenue stream for the players to extract value from.

I personally believe the owners’ position is weaker than the players’ position, and the valuation of the San Diego and Angels’ franchises is proof. In addition, MLB ownership stands to reap the benefits of expansion, and they will not want the process slowed.

The Angels haven’t won since 2014, they don’t own the stadium or parking, and Arte has not materially invested in team facilities during his tenure….and the team was valued at $4b. KSE could “change the oil, replace the tires, and detail the interior” on this franchise and add another billion in valuation quickly.

I’m sure KSE will be involved in shaping the owner’s position. They could carry a big stick in making sure the season is not delayed to the degree that games are cancelled.

I am going to be the optimist here, and say A and A.

Cap and Floor keeps run away spending in check, and provides stability. If everyone is money focused, limiting risk means a more predicable bet on the contract side and they can add revenue through marketing and value inflation.

There will be a lot of incentive to get this done soon. Everyone lost in COVID, and everyone loses in a lockout/strike. Again, if they are focused on money losing a season is horrible, and part of a season makes them lose revenue through stadium and fan revenue – and divided media attention is already straining traditional lines of revenue.

If I’m MLBPA I go for a divide the other side strategy. There is revenue some teams receive that doesn’t have to be shared with anyone. I would hammer to the public every day that MLB is not only keeping revenue away from the players but also from other members of MLB. Get out to the public how unbalanced the team revenue situation is.

If the MLBPA pounds on this then maybe C or D occurs in question 1. Then possibly A or B in question 2. If MLBPA just focuses on cap then D in question 1 and D in question 2.

Both sides seem unreasonably entrenched and unwilling to bend. I am not opimistic, but hope to be wrong (again).

It reminds me of the Big Three US automakers versus their unions in the late 70s argueing over mostly trivial issues. The elephant in the room was the need to figure out how to be more competitive and build better cars because the imports were kicking their asses. Baseball’s fanbase is aging out and they don’t want to be 1990s Detroit.

That right there is the key. I question whether either side is taking it as seriously as they should. Improvements have been made, with the pitch clock and ABS coming to mind, but is that enough? I honestly don’t know.

What I do know is what’s truly stupid: the automatic runner in extra innings. It is such a ridiculous way to manufacture an outcome. Instead of letting the game be decided naturally, MLB essentially hands a team a runner in scoring position and hopes someone can push him across the plate. To me, it’s one of the most artificial and misguided rule changes the sport has ever adopted.

58-94 .382 puts us 2 games back of the Rox who are 1-9 in last 10 and stand at 56-96 in ping ball balls for the draft seeding. In our last 10 we have gone 4-6 and continuing that pace means 100 in the W-L column on the wrong side. Fitting that Moreno goes out like that. I am so glad that I went to bed at 2-2. Just watched the condensed game and it was painful for only 5 minutes. It is obvious why both these teams have losing records. It is difficult to “out bone head” the other when you are making “bone heads” yourself

These are two very bad baseball teams. And the AL West has been a joke this year. The Angels and Mariners had two of the easiest schedules in baseball in 2026. The Mariners should have been at least 10 games better to .500. Would be hilarious if the AL West winner suddenly got hot and made it to the WS. Stranger things have happened in baseball!

I attended. My son asked if we could take off at 9pm. I never leave early but chose to listen instead of forcing him through another hour of misery. It was already 7-2 at that point.

No loss for us leaving early as the team rolled over in those last innings.

Total per caps for the night $2.695 per head for the two of us (I got myself an ice cream). Spent $5 each on tickets and $0.00 on parking. Food – we brought in tacos from Poblano Estilo Tijuana and walked from near there to avoid donating to the Arturo fund.
