LA Angels Thursday News Crash

Who were the minor league standouts for the Angels farm system in 2026? Zach Neto showed some power in Boston to help the Angels take the series win. Reid Detmers did his part. Neto is now getting talked about as an offseason trade candidate.

It’s official. Shohei Ohtani is on the injured list with a couple of injuries. It’s his left knee and right biceps. Jazz Chisholm Jr. is on the injured list with a thumb sprain.

Benches cleared at Pirates-White Sox but there was no fisticuffs.

Catcher Eric Haase got a minor league deal with the Braves. Phil Maton has to have knee surgery this week. The Giants claimed right-hander Duncan Davitt off waivers from the Braves. The Orioles recalled Jeremiah Jackson because of Blaze Alexander going on the injured list. The Diamondbacks activated Zac Gallen and Michael Soroka. The Padres released catcher Blake Hunt.

So now are we all supposed to question Kroenke since he can’t draw an LA Rams crowd in LA so instead they run a home game in Australia?

Arjun Nimmala hit his fifth HR in nine September games today. Jacob Cozart joined him with his seventh since being traded to the Angels.

Really exciting how the farm is doing.

Nimmala seems to be adjusting well to AA. He’s still pretty young for this level right?

Very young. He’s 20, and the average Southern League player is 23-24. He’s hitting about 30% better than the league right now.

He’s showing some pull-side loft but also just launching some towering shots to center. His chase rates are top tenth percentile. He’s starting to hunt his pitch and do serious damage when he finds it.

If Meckler can maintain his current level of play, he is our inexpensive Steven Kwan. For a full season he would be over a 4 WAR player

File this under “Nobody asked you.”

But I think for the next year or so, talking about expensive FAs, though fun, is fool hearty. It makes as much sense as the assistant football coaches talking about whether to “go for 1 or 2 when we score” when it is the 4th quarter and down 4 touchdowns. The team needs to “middle of the road improvements” and then talk about FAs putting the Angels over the top. Not the reverse.

This years’ free agency is pretty poopoo, but there are few names that are intriguing

  • Skubal: obviously expensive and a longshot, but will not cost a draft pick, and is a stud. Pitching being our strength (kind funny typing that out), this would also allow for some trade potential for some bats
  • Sato: triple crown winner, MVP, only 27 years old. Would slot really nicely into LF and be a lefty power bat we need. Strikeouts are a concern (not as much as Murakami was), but is instriguing.
  • Taira: the more I watch this little roly poly, the more i like him. former reliever turned starter, he’s only 5’8 but has a variety of pitches at average fastball velo is 95+
  • Carson Kelly: veteran backup with some offensive upside. Can start if MoBalla is primarily a DH
  • Arraez: never strikes out. Would be nice having a guy like that.
  • Wildcard: Bo Bichette. Not sure he will opt out, but he hasn’t had as bad a season as made out to be. 2nd half has been really good.

I’m not sure that Tarik is a long shot or out of reach anymore:

The best player in this fall’s free-agent class is certain of one thing: Whenever Kroenke takes over, Anaheim instantly becomes a preferred destination for stars across the major leagues, with a new owner not just promising to spend to win but a demonstrated history of doing so.

“Absolutely,” Dodgers pitcher Tarik Skubal told The Times. “Not only an owner that has obvious financial backing, but an owner that has turned the Rams into what the Rams are. I think they’re the Super Bowl favorite this year. There’s an owner that cares about winning.

“The impact he brings to the Angels? You bring an owner that really cares about winning and is willing to do whatever it takes to win and invest, not only with players on the field but all the stuff behind the scenes, like clubhouse renovations. I’m sure there will be a lot of stuff there that changes to make it state-of-the-art, because all that stuff matters.”

Kroenke would be the richest owner in baseball, with a net worth estimated by Forbes at $24 billion.

Skubal said he is focused on helping the Dodgers toward a third consecutive World Series championship and has not thought much about his free agency.
Speaking generally, he said, it is likely that players that might not have considered signing with the Angels might now do so.

“You want to feel wanted,” Skubal said. “And you have an owner that is willing to do whatever it takes to win. Winning is the most important thing in sports. When you get yourself in that environment, I think guys do want to play there.

“Just look around the league: Guys tend to gravitate toward teams that are winning and teams that are in the playoff hunt every single year, with World Series aspirations every single year. I think free agents gravitate toward that in general. I’m sure that will be the

I think we should agree to pay a pitcher close to 50M a year so that we can suck ass for the first two or three years of the contract and then he can start breaking down, while costing a ton of money, while the team is building into a contention window and needs money for FAs to finish of a couple holes in the roster.

Skubal will be 30 next season. Boras is his agent.

Someone will give him an 8 or 9 year contract that averages at least $45m per season.

That contract is guaranteed to be added to the list of “worst contracts since 2000”

I’m always down for NPB signs – good market fit in SoCal, and I appreciate the variation in approach and style, just purely as a baseball fan.

I’ve already mentioned a few times that I’m onboard with making a play for Skubal. That’s unusual for me. Normally, big FA signs are not my jam, but richest owner in the sport + largely clear payroll changes the game.

One, I still believe in the old Oakland A’s three headed monster concept (Hudson, Mulder, Zito) – sign three frontend studs, then have a dozen backend rotation pieces in your pipeline ready to cycle in.

Two, a Skubal sign alongside a Detmers extension would show Kroenke means business, and would be a perceptual re-set for all free agents considering Anaheim, and would likely bring down signing costs for other free agents who would otherwise demand a premium to play for LAA.

If Brandon Lowe isn’t saddled with a QO, I could get behind a Lowe signing.

Wondering who the prospect watchers ’round here would pick for the Halos’ Minor League Player of the Year. Some candidates:

> Jake Munroe: 416 ABs/18 HRs/.291/.404/.902 over two levels… unquestionalby the breakout prospect of 2026.
> Hayden A.: 108 runs(!)/12 HRs/53 SB/.289/.391/.847… dispelled most concerns about his barreling ability in 2026, slugging .456.
> Dylan Jordan: 6-5/4.81 ERA/137 Ks in 97.1 innings… been knocked around a bit in high-A, which has hurt his case.
> Nicolo Pinazzi: 7-2/0.86 ERA/102 Ks in 63 innings over four levels… the Syd Finch cult-hero pick of the bunch… signed out of indie league over the off-season and turned in the minor’s most dominating relief numbers in 2026, on the strength of a hammer slider-cutter hybrid which he sets up with a mid-90s FB. His ERA is the best in baseball among pitchers with 50 IPs.
> Kendry Maduro: 463 ABs/21 HRs/.300./365/.888 over two levels… 22-year-old shortstop bootstrapped himself into Top 30 prospect contention and has an outside shot at starting the 2027 season in Rocket City if they promote Nimmala.

Those are five of the best, IMO. Honorable mention: Christian Moore, with an OPS of .940 in 330+ AAA ABs.

ya it’ll be either Munroe or Alvarez

pitching wise, Pinazzi is kind of a funny choice (being that he’s a reliever) but fits the bill. Every other pitching has had their warts. Jordan has been really bad in High A, TGA wasn’t good first half but great 2nd half. Haley had a streak of stellar starts. Hurtado had his moments. Tough call.

Turk's Teeth

Pinazzi is the sort of Shoemaker type of story you like to celebrate with organizational awards.

On the pitching side, I might give the nod to Nate Snead. While I think his projection is probably fifth starter, just the fact that he shouldered a full season’s workload after two years in the bullpen as a Volunteer is something. Outpitched Shores this season, really. His AA performance has been uneven, but there’s still room for improvement – the control is superb, and that was an issue in college for him.

Munroe, easily. He exceeded every expectation. It’s one thing for a fourth rounder to make it to AA in his first pro season. It’s another for him to thrive there. The power projection is a bit light for a future 3B, but that doesn’t take away from his season.

Alvarez had a very nice year, though in many ways performed to expectation. He’s still a clear top 100 prospect to my mind, and the only OF prospect in the Angels org with any real ceiling. But I’ll give the edge to Munroe here.

Maduro is a fun story, but there are as many things to be concerned about in his profile as things to like. Expands the zone way too much, with sub-70% contact rates, without the loft and boom to compensate. See profile attached.

I’m not a tank advocate… but at this point, why not put ourselves in the best spot for the No. 1 pick in 2027? And if that’s our gospel, the magic number for the Halos right now, I believe, is 11.

As in, that’s the number of losses we need over the final 16 games to guarantee that SF does not usurp us for one of the three worst records in MLB. (Which all have exactly the same odds for securing the No. 1 pick, yes?)

Very soon, our magic number will likely fall within the range that we can both secure a Bottom 3 finish AND avoid 100 losses, FWIW.

San Francisco is not eligible for the lottery. They will pick tenth. Their record does not impact the Angels lottery chances.

We are 8.5 games worse than 4th place Kansas City and a bottom 3 finish is all but assured. So time to root for not losing 100, unless you want keep fighting for better waiver positioning.

I asked this question on here a few weeks ago and someone said that the 3 worst teams that aren’t SF would share the same odds.

BUT I just asked AI and it thinks what you are saying is accurate – if SF finishes bottom 3, then the odds would actually get better for the remaining 2 teams at the bottom. Odds for the fourth team would also get better but not be as good as the bottom 2.

So I think that means that ideally we want to be in the bottom 3 WITH San Francisco also occupying a spot in the bottom 3 for the best possible odds.

More info – this actually happened last year. The White Sox were not eligible and finished in the bottom 3, and this is how it broke down:

3 White Sox – Not elegible
4 Angels (63-99): 17.96%

2 Rockies (61-101): 22.45%
3 Marlins (62-100): 22.45%
4 Angels (63-99): 17.96%

San Francisco isn’t eligible for a top pick. That won’t change anything. Halos are all but locked in to top odds.
I posed this question on Twitter yesterday:

Which would you rather happen?

  1. Angels lose 100 games and get the 1st pick (I know there is a lottery, this is looking down the road)
  2. Angels lose 99 games or less, but get the #2 pick
TrojanBoiler

Easy – lose 100 and get first pick. This shouldn’t even be a debate.

Losing 100+ this year won’t have any outcome ever again going forward for this franchise. Draft slot absolutely will have an impact.

It wasn’t just the start of the season, it was 4 months on defense and 4.5 months on offense. Neto’s wRC+ is 113 and a couple of days ago it was 109. He’s been very consistent for 3 years. He has so far been a good hitter but not exceptional.

Not saying that he’s not a good player, but he is not an organizational cornerstone. On a good team, he would have really solid value as one of the support pieces. We need 3-4 players who are better hitters than anyone we have and then Meckler, Trout and Neto would be awesome additions.

I swear I can recall a point at which there were no (or maybe one?) 50 grade prospects on our list. Now it’s like our top 6 or 7 are 50+. That’s great, and I think that a couple guys like Dylan Jordan, Lugo or Grahovac may up there stock enough to crack that number too.

And maybe we trade for a couple more. Or even a few more.

Put another way, Raudi Rodriguez is pretty far down our list now, and I like him.

Boding even more wellish for us over the next few years is that that top tier of 50+ kids only includes 2 pitchers out of the half dozen players. A good mix.

Bonus. Walbert Urena was never even a factor in any of this. But there he is. Kicking ass.

Much has been made of Trout on here recently. A good comparison can be made for 3 possible Hall of Fame players that all debuted in 2011. One doesn’t know he is aging yet, but all 3 will eventually lose to Father Time. But all 3 have been great stars with career OPS+ of 166, 141, and 126.
