LA Angels Monday News Crash

August 24, 2026

The Angels activated Yusei Kikuchi off the 60 day IL on Sunday. They designated Michael Fulmer for assignment. Over the weekend we lost both Nolan Schanuel and Wade Meckler to the injured list. Should the Angels blow big money on Casey Mize or Freddy Peralta when they reach free agency?

The Rangers designated Jarred Kelenic for assignment over the weekend. The Marlins designated left-hander John King for assignment. The Rays designated right-hander Chris Roycroft for assignment. The Tigers DFAd outfielder James Outman.

Yankees left-hander Ryan Weathers went on the 15 day IL with a left forearm flexor strain. Andy Pages will miss 4 to 6 weeks with a fractured hand. The Mariners just placed Brendan Donovan on the 7 day concussion list. Michael Soroka is back on the injured list. What is it this time? Right shoulder inflammation.

JJ Bleday hit for the cycle on Saturday.

Mil vs TB in the World Series would be perfect. MLB is hoping for LA vs NY, but this year the 2 best teams in baseball should meet up. 😀 😃 😆

Yanks due to get Judge and Bellinger back soon, I expect the Yanks will be the team to beat in weak AL. All for the Brew Crew but NL is really packed. Dodgers, Phillies, Cubs and the Brewers all could take the pennant. Padres lurking.

Come September there will be more players changing uniforms and the off season is not far away. There will be more Yuts coming in by promotion too. Just cross fingers that ’81/94 revisited does not stop the flow.

I have no idea how anyone lives on the East Coast and watches West Coast sports.

I’m in Virginia on a work trip and the game doesn’t start until damn near 10pm. My coworkers are getting drunk and I’m trying to stay up for Klassen lol

Yeah, it’s brutal. I remember Monday Night Football starting at 9, even when the game was on the East Coast. Lived across the Meadowlands at a Sheraton for a year and had a challenge consuming my sports teams. No pitch clocks or ghost runner in those days.

I’ve become pals with a guy from the sporting tribune and last week we tried to create an all AL West team that would be on par with the Dodgers, Brewers, or Rays and we failed.

Skipping Trout (34), then d’Arnaud, Heineman, and Frazier are your 30+ in age. I doubt any will be back unless as a player/coach. Next is Siri (30). Kikuchi is 35. Then Saucedo and Weiman are 30+. It is a very young team. A couple gray beards with talent would not upset the mix – provided it is a one or two year deal. And some of the youngsters should be non-tendered.

Totally agree with Jeff’s article. Don’t sign any pitchers. Yesterday’s line up featured maybe 3 players who should be MLB regulars. We are many players short right now.

You know your young pitchers are starting to round in to shape when Kikuchi comes off the IL and you’re like “Oh man. But I want MOAR KIDZ.” I’m getting so chuffed about these guys that I would rather watch Hertado or someone and I think Silent C has a chance to be good when he bounces back… but I have no reason for those thoughts.

I hate the Dodgers because they have totally failed to be transparent and make me, as a fan with unrealistic self esteem, feel informed about what is happening with Will Smith this year.

No. I do not want to sign Mize or Peralta. I don’t want to sign any pitchers accept depth/back end arms like Chris Paddack or something. I want MOARR KIDZZ on the mound. I’d rather just extend Detmers than pay Mize.

Mike Forst and Dana Brown are on the Front Office Exec market. Man, you want to talk about an owner I’d hate to be stuck with, Jim Crane is pretty hard to take. He’s like “extra Arte”. He pretty much hired the guy who built the Atlanta super farm, then started the “early extension” trend for them…. and then didn’t let him do any of that stuff in Houston. Still, the Astros develop hitters pretty dang well…. I’m just saying. Jim Crane and has muscular man friend Jeff Bagwell will be the GM for now. Moz + Ex-Astros GM would be a wild combo, but very good with data.

Remember Raisal Iglesias? We as fans are so good at complaining that we managed to complain about him. An incredible effort by an incredible group. I’d kind of forgotten about him till I watched some Braves games this month. He’s still just trucking along being really good.

When I read Brown was fired, I was thinking the same thing came here to post and read this.

I agree, this is someone Moz might really like for an organizational rebuild. Guy gets saddled down out of the gate losing 2 picks – and has had some bad luck in just a few years – but had a stellar reputation in Atlanta. He’d have the benefit of the culture and initiatives at two well run organizations. Add that to Moz’s Cardinals background – and that’s a lot of philosophies they’ve been exposed to.

I surely don’t know enough about creating this type of team – but he’d definitely be on the list.

That’s the thing. Stupid people think the Astros won because they cheated. They won because they kicked your fkin ass. They were good. And it went well beyond just a couple tank feed 1st round picks. They have developed a lot of players and were a well run org…. that cheated when everyone else was cheating and dared to beat the Red Sox and Doyers and Yankees.

From early 202s Atlanta to the Astros? I’ll hire that experience.

Really interesting. That they are picking up these guys on the cheap is the story. I’m hoping Rays/Brewers this year. That would be so good for baseball.

Even better in this story is the Rays are leading the East with about $425 million a year less in revenue than the Yankees and Dodgers.

There is no immediate need to spend “big money” on free agents.

When the team is one player away from seriously competing for a World Series championship, then perhaps it makes sense.

I agree. One, or even two, big money players aren’t going to push this team into contention so it would be better to invest that money into development and scouting right now.

Agree, but we’re going to have nobody on the books other than Trout after next year. If we finally get a little lucky, and this pitching can continue on the home grown path – and we see development of a few of our young hitters (Moore, Nimalla, etc) – some solid floor spend could be warranted.

I’m not against an early free agent signing to signal to the baseball world that the team is on the way up, but it should make sense. I don’t think the Angels should be signing free agent pitchers to big money deals right now now. They have quite a bit of youthful talented pitchers and they should see how that shakes out. Maybe they could look at position players, but even there, they should wait one more year to get a better sense of the youth movement. About the only thing they should sign this offseason (optimistically assuming there will be something like a normal one) are players that could be flipped at the trade deadline.

I’m pretty much in agreement. I think the big money deals are almost always over pays. Now if you can get some guys with upside on short deals that can be moved at the deadline – or won’t break the bank if they aren’t – that’s the game I’d play.

If I owned the team and it was my money, I would not think about spending any money until the winter of 2028 so I had some idea of what I actually needed. Unfortunately, the pitching is several years ahead of the position players.

I believe the TV deals for Angels and national deals for MLB end in 2028. Not sure if Angels can sign anyone in that off season.

One of the reasons I’m not understanding the owners hard line for this CBA negotiation. Why not extend the current agreement for two years and figure out revenue equality and where revenue comes from after 2028?

Following the rebuilds of Astros and Orioles, both drove me crazy with waiver wire transactions. Luhnow quit waivers when he got a .500 + team. He picked up Josh Reddick (RF) from A’s/Dodgers and Brian McCann (Catcher) from the Yankees – who thought they struck gold with Sanchez until he led the league in passed balls TWICE. Also pitching Charlie Morton, Verlander, and Garrit Cole. Those put the Astros over the top.

Elias is still doing the waiver wire thing, and opted from Tyler O’Neil. And multiple bad luck pitchers with arm injuries.

One worked and looked genius, the other to date has not worked and looks like baseball gods don’t like him.
