Soon the Indians draft Rojas…. who goes on to win 4 Cy Youngs for them before becoming a Yankee
In terms of draft position and consensus rankings, Grindlinger was very much in the Angels’ zone – defensible as “BPA”.

Can’t really say that Grindlinger was a reach in any way. Just a very unconventional pick, and a rather atypical Angels pick, as he’s both young and model-friendly.
@ JJ if you make it to Zoom call can you please ask why they announced Grindlinger as an OF instead of 2-way
Among high schoolers, I liked Rojas and Bolemon over Grindlinger as arms, and Condon, Bowen, maybe even Lawrance over Grindlinger as bats.
But maybe they can draft him on both sides? I really dunno – not much track record of doing that.
Also useful to keep in mind he’s a year younger than those guy. Provides a little developmental leeway.
Yes, and a reason he was model-friendly. But the Angels have one of the worst track records in the past decade of developing young, raw positional players. They used to draft one in the second or third round every year.
It’s a real leap of faith to believe they have system, staff and a plan to develop a raw 17 yo two-way player. But we’ll see.

#11. Jared Grindlinder
Grindlinger is the draft’s best two-way prospect. He’s a left-handed pitcher whose fastball is up to 96 and outfielder with outstanding bat-to-ball skills, and he only turned 17 in April. He reclassified into this draft just before the season started so he wasn’t seen as much last summer and fall as most of the high schoolers in the class. He’s still almost all projection at this point, and the bat speed isn’t great yet, but the ball carries well already and he’s likely to come into real power as he fills out. He has arm strength with a potentially plus slider but the delivery needs work, as he’s off the rubber very quickly and tends to spin off his front heel after he lands. He has all of the risk of a teenaged arm — more, really, as he’s younger than any other pitching prospect in the class. I think he’s a much better prospect in all respects as a hitter, while he also offers the backup option of putting him on the mound if hitting doesn’t work. (Or vice versa.)
My son started playing all stars this year so I spent the summer on the baseball tournament circuit in so cal including the OC… Perry might’ve been the dumbest person on the planet. I found Angels fans and a shit tom of talent all over the OC… you could have a whole powerhouse organization just drafting within a 15 mile radius of Angels stadium. And guys who will commit to the org. Unbelievable I figured that out in a month of observation.
Hank Conger 1st round pick from HB. Love Hank but hopefully this works out better than he did.
Arte is still here. Perry is gone. If Mozeliak really did let the scouting director make the pick, this would seem to indicate the prior picks were more influenced by Perry than the scouting director given who was on the board when the Angels selected in the last few years.
Now we’ll find out if the “winds of change” are blowing strong enough for the Angels to actually develop raw, high school prospect.
Same exact thought. In an alternate universe without Perry, do we take Konnor Griffin over Moore ?
The Angels have sucked his entire part of his life he has memories from.
Moz said he likes to go with best player available. Doesn’t sound like that philosophy was in the room with this pick. Basically someone who will take five years to sniff majors.
