LA Angels Tuesday News Crash: Goins, Goins, Gone

The draft is this Saturday.

The Braves designated Carlos Carrasco for assignment. They have also DFAd catcher Jair Camargo. The Tigers traded right-hander Matt Seelinger to the Mets for cash considerations. They also traded Woo-Suk Go to the Twins for cash.

The Pirates released right-hander Yunior Marte over the weekend and he has signed with the Rakuten Golden Eagles. The Pirates released infielder Davis Wendzel. The Blue Jays released both Josh Fleming and Justin Topa.

Former Angels coach Ryan Goins and Manager Craig Stammen were ejected in the first at bat of the Padres game against the Dodgers on Sunday, basically for arguing balls and strikes.

C.B. Bucknor is retiring at the end of the 2026 season. ABS apparently cannot handle fog.

Former big league pitcher Al Holland passed away at the age of 73.

He’s a starter on the AL squad ASG, IIRC. I’d be surprised if he plays much in CF before then. No reason to risk re-injury before then. Not for this org and this season.

He’s being paid over $30 million a season. Even if the team is 0-91, if he’s healthy, he has a contractual duty to play, if he is in the line up.

See, he had super human baseball abilities. Then he got his contract and he got a super human ability to take injuries that “should be OK in a few days” or “the team’s just gonna rest for a couple games and see how things go” and turn them into three to six month absences.

It’s like he’s high up in the SEIU or something. He’s an injury artist.

Josh Lowe in CF today. Still no Trout. I was thinking the other day about past CFs. Gary Pettis, one of my favorites, had no power but we had enough elsewhere. Devon White hit some HRs and was, as I remember, pretty good in the OF. My point here is that we can call up Nelson Rada, maybe next year (if there’s a season) if we’re balanced with some power and decent fielding.

If Trout can’t or won’t play this week on the road trip, why would he be playing in the all star exhibition game?

Los Angeles Angels
First pick: No. 12
Bonus pool: $11,755,400

One big question: The Angels will take another quick-moving college player in the first round, right?

I have to act as if they will keep doing this until they don’t, but there is a line of thinking that recently fired general manager Perry Minasian was behind this draft strategy, so they could change course this season. There has been a strong return from the Angels taking prep pitchers later as overslot options in recent drafts, so I’d expect that to continue. At the 12th pick, they’re looking mostly at college players as the best options most likely available, so I think that’s likely to be their selection, but not necessarily the quickest mover per se. Cameron Flukey, Ryder Helfrick, Justin Lebron, Derek Curiel and Chris Hacopian all make sense.

I’m glad that Perry is gone. I’m expecting Flukey. I imagine that if Perry were still here he’d have a target and if that player was gone he’d be flummoxed. I just wanted to type flummoxed. I don’t know if I ever had before. Anyway, Or maybe Perry’s strategy has been to multiply his pick by 3 then add 6 and then see who;s ranked there. So if he were picking at #2 he’d end up with the 12th rated guy. At 12, like this year, that’d be…3×12=36+6…the 42nd guy. Anyway, glad he’s gone.

6. Reid Detmers, LHP, Los Angeles Angels
Chance of being traded: 20%
Rest-of-season impact: High
Years of control: Two more years after 2026

The buzz: Detmers has the fourth-most strikeouts in the big leagues behind Misiorowski, Cristopher Sanchez and Dylan Cease, isn’t walking hitters or giving up home runs, and is a metric darling on top of that. Complement all that with an additional two years of club control on top of the season and his value has skyrocketed this year, giving the Angels a genuine opportunity to start a long-needed rebuild the proper way. Of course, it’s the Angels, so executives are skeptical that it will happen.

The Angels also fired GM Perry Minasian at the end of June and replaced him with former Cardinals president of baseball operations John Mozeliak, so how much leeway owner Arte Moreno will give Mozeliak to potentially deal Detmers and others with multiple years of club control remains unclear at the moment.

The scouting report: Because it’s the Angels, after taking Detmers with the 10th pick in the 2020 draft and seeming to be on the verge of becoming a strong third-starter type, they moved him to the bullpen for a year in 2025 only to just put him right back where he was in the rotation in 2024. The knock earlier in Detmers’ career was that his breaking stuff wasn’t crisp enough. But to his credit, he has steadily improved the velo/movement of his slider over the years while moving his softer curveball to be more of a sometimes pitch and adding velo to his now plus fastball.

Best fits: Cubs, Padres, A’s, Mets, Cardinals, Orioles, Diamondbacks, Braves, White Sox, Rays, Nationals, Blue Jays.

16. Jose Soriano, RHP, Los Angeles Angels
Chance of being traded: 20%
Rest-of-season impact: Moderate
Years of control: Two more years after 2026

The buzz: Since starting the season by giving up one run in his first 37⅔ innings, Soriano has posted an ERA approaching 5.00. The stuff still really plays, and plenty of organizations believe they can help work out the control kinks that can plague Soriano. Add to that the two years of control and the same pitching-hungry organizations that want Detmers — contenders and teams that intend to contend in the coming years — will be interested in Soriano.

The scouting report: Since the time he entered pro ball in 2016, Soriano was more prospect than finished product until 2024 or 2025, including being a Rule 5 draft pick (and returned!) in 2021. Since late April, he has been roughly that third-/fourth-starter type that he has been in the big leagues. He’s ranked this high because of the flashes, the years of control and the plus stuff grades from scouts and analysts on his pitches. A savvy pitching development team could realize tens of millions in value from acquiring Soriano and unlocking results that match the stuff/potential/flashes.

Best fits: Cubs, Padres, A’s, Mets, Cardinals, Orioles, Diamondbacks, Braves, White Sox, Rays, Nationals, Blue Jays.

28. Jo Adell, RF, Los Angeles Angels

52. Sam Bachman, RHP, Los Angeles Angels

54. Ryan Zeferjahn, RHP, Los Angeles Angels

66. Jorge Soler, OF, Los Angeles Angels

67. Chase Silseth, RHP, Los Angeles Angels

If Moseliak trades Soriano, Adell, Neto and Detmers…. just pulls out the gas can and sets the hovel on fire for the insurance pay out and then walks away at the end of the year…. he will be my hero. That would be a baller move.

If he trades someone to the Braves, Yankees, Cardinals, Rays or Phillies for a prospect or two and a post 1st round draft pick like #32 I’ll name someone’s kid after him.

Baseball America put out their midseason farm rankings…

23. Los Angeles Angels
Preseason Ranking: 28
Top 100 Prospects: RHP Tyler Bremner (No. 35)

Strength of the System: Positive Momentum. The Angels have generally had one of the thinnest farm systems in baseball in the 2020s, in part because their best prospects sped to the majors—whether they were ready or not. The Angels have been more deliberate and conventional in their development plans recently, and it’s paying off in a growing pack of intriguing pitchers with a few potential everyday position prospects (like Hayden Alvarez and Juan Flores) sprouting up, as well. Denzer Guzman’s improvements have provided another boost.
System

Weakness: Position Prospects. The improvements from Alvarez and Guzman are encouraging, but the Angels remain thin on hitting prospects, especially those who have power and defensive value. The trade deadline and the draft could help improve this.

I cannot stress it enough — trading Detmers and Soriano should be seen as mission critical to the health and well being of this organization. The farm is improving and there is a clear avenue to making it better. This deadline has to be the biggest inflection point we’ve faced since holding onto Ohtani with 1.5 years of control.

I so agree. They’ve already lost value on Soriano. Everyone thumbed their nose when I suggested Soriano for Made. Now – Made is now up 30+ over him on BTV. We are losing both these guys in a few years – and if they become someone we want – we can pick them up at market in Free Agency. I don’t think the Brewers would sell Made – they like to develop their guys – but it was fun to play with the ideas. I was infatuated with Neto and wanted him extended early – looking like a good move by Perry not doing that one. I’m so pivoted on Neto, I’m good if we move him too.

The Angels have such a poorly constructed roster that Meckler would be the logical player to bat lead off, unless there is someone in the minors. Neto’s k rate is so horrible, it mostly eliminates any benefits from him being lead off.

While we’re on the subject of getting better, what should we do about Neto? Dropping him down the lineup is obvious. Moving him off SS to a less demanding position would also help. I’d prefer Peraza or Guzman there.

Neto’s brain has been the problem this year, for me anyway. Not sure a less demanding position would help, but maybe throwing Cracker Jacks in the stadium would help.

I can’t help but assume he is the single biggest example of collateral damage from Dirt Suzuki’s “leadership”

I think Neto needs a ball buster like Washington. Someone to keep his ego in check and hold him accountable for making mistakes. Dirt definitely doesn’t do either of those things, and I think Zach’s regression is a direct result of piss poor leadership.

Whatever it is, it doesn’t speak well of Neto’s mental toughness and/or self awareness. At a certain point, you need to look in the mirror and own your shit.

Right, its hard for me to blame Suzuki for Neto taking a step back when Neto is in his 4th MLB season. He’s not a rookie fresh out of college, he’s a grown man, so any blame for his play should land squarely on his shoulders.

For sure! I am not trying to give Neto a pass or say he isn’t in charge of his own development.

But it doesn’t change the reality that people respond to leadership differently, and some need more motivation/direction than others. That’s half the reason why we have coaches, CEOs, managers, therapists, etc.

Suzuki’s job is to get the best out of his players and he doesn’t do that.

If you want to make yourself upset check out the stats of Bremner, Anderson, and Hernandez.

Passing on Seth Hernandez will forever be unforgivable considering he pitched in our own backyard and everything about him screamed immediate star. We had one of the best prospects of a generation fall into our lap and Perry said “Nah, we good”

While I was fixated on Hernandez last year, I was not watching too much of Kade Anderson. What a start to both their careers. in a hitters league, players are batting .160 of Kade with a strikeout to walk ratio of 10-1, WHIP is 0.69. He’s doing this in AA ball which is a stepping stone to the big leagues for talented players. Turks pick last year to go No. 2 last year.

Seth is performing well, High A a little more challenging but still doing very well and racking up K’s. 2-years less experience than Kade.

Both should have very bright futures.

I think we’ll know early in 2027 if anything has changed.

Mozeliak has the leverage here with the 6 month contract. He is clearly feeling Arte out.

Mo will present a plan and budget for the baseball operations department. If Arte agrees and actually funds it I’m sure Mo stays on as a POBO or consultant and hires the people he wants.

If Arte does anything less than Mozeliak wants, Mo walks. The dude is already rich, already retired, and already won plenty. The Angels need him a lot more than he needs the Angels.

I have to disagree, Jeff. Mo is obviously in love with the idea of shining on a bigger stage than he ever had in St. Louis. Guys at this level are usually much more interested in the non-financial rewards. Yes, he will walk away if he doesn’t like Arte’s reaction to his plan, but he has no real leverage to force Arte to change his ways.

milehigh

Real leverage? Probably not. But Mo has the pedigree (and I think Molly, too) to tell Arte that if he doesn’t listen to the best advice he has received in the last ten years then any hope for a legacy will officially be flushed down the toilet for the world to see. Legacy is all that Arte has left. The next six months is all that Arte has left to rescue anything resembling a positive ending.

Sad, and sounds overly dramatic, but ultimately, I believe it is a true statement. The new GM will likely be here 5-6 years and if the wrong choice is made and things generally don’t change, the club will continue to look like it does and it will permanently become the Colorado Rockies until it is sold.

The last time Arte was considering selling, he said there were individuals who wanted to invest so there is money available if he is willing to go that route and get a shot in the arm so to speak.

Over the next six months:

A new GM will be hired on a multi year contract
New assistant GMs will be brought in.
New scouting and analytic people will be brought in.
Most likely a new field manager will be named.

If those people are not to Mozeliak’s liking and he does not feel the ability to shine is possible, he has an out. He can simply walk away.

Meckler does everything except hit for power. He should be the current lead off hitter and you could do worse than have Rada and Meckler hitting 1-2 followed by Trout. Get a real clean up hitter and let Neto hit 6th. If they were to get a RF and 1B next season who could hit 4th and 5th, they could have a deep lineup with Neto 6th and Guzman 7th, followed by the catcher and Peraza. With their starting pitching and a rebuilt pen, they would be very competitive. That’s my hopium take.

Angels W/L in 2025 with Trout: 55-75
Without Trout: 17-15
In 2026 with Trout: 30-45
Without Trout: 6-10, including current losing streak.
Combined: ’25 and ’26:
With Trout: 85- 120
Without Trout: 23-25.
At time Trout went on IL on 6/18 this season, he was mired in a 5 for 41 slump.
I don’t disagree Trout may be the Angels best player but the team is terrible with him or without him, arguably “better” when he is not in line up, but terrible either way.
I’ve always been a Trout fan, he is a hall of famer. But the team is what it is. Trout’s presence in the line up does not make a positive difference in the w/l column. One can argue that his obp is excellent, that is true. And that he he still hits homers and scores runs, also true. But, at this stage, he has become very prone to extended batting slumps and sporadic power outputs. Fact, of his home run total this season, 7 of his 18 homers were consolidated in 7 games. Thus, 11 homers spread over the other 69 games he played. His k rate is ghastly. With Neto and Trout at top of line up this season, they have combined for over 200k’s. Ugh. Its not like they are bringing stolen base prowess to the top of the line up. Those days are long gone for Trout. His defense is a liability, as Mark Langston was saying on the radio broadcast during last Sunday’s game: the Angel outfielders (referring to Trout and Adell (as they have been the full timers) play much too deep, all season, and “it’s killed the Angels pitchers who have had way too many bloop hits fall in in front of them (outfielders)”
The Angels have no choice but to play Trout, if anything, his contract demands such.

I know Bill James rejects this, but he’s never been a clutch player so his stats largely amass where they’re not needed. And his K rate really kills his value, as his outs are also non-productive. It’s balanced by how great he was at the beginning of his career, and what an exceptionally nice guy he is, which no longer helps us on the field.

Accurate data but I do not think it is straightforward to draw a conclusion the Angels are better without Trout. W/L data points to this but what is driving that outcome. Yeah, they suck either way.

It might be worth a look to determine how the other 8-guys in the lineup produced when Mike was available and playing. Mike gets on base at a higher percentage than anyone else. That right there tells me, Angels have a better chance to win with the leader in OBP penciled in the lineup.

Mike doesn’t pitch of course so bad pitching outings could very well influence W/L more than one hitter in the lineup.

Anyway, I think it’s just too difficult to say the Angels are better w/o Trout playing, my suspicion is that the other 8 guys are underperforming and are subpar. For those of us that have followed Trout, we can recall when he would go in those unconscious hitting streaks, 7-10 days carrying the team. No longer does that but he is still their most productive player.
