LA Angels Tuesday News Crash

The speculation begins about who will be the next Angels General Manager.

Cast your ballots now for the starting lineup at the All Star Game.

Chronic bullpen failure may have led to the Perry Minasian firing.

Drew Pomeranz signed a minor league deal with the Cubs. Patrick Sandoval may finally be getting close to being activated.

The Athletics placed both Tyler Soderstrom and Jacob Wilson on the injured list. The Rangers designated both Jarred Kelenic and Joe Ross for assignment.

Fangraphs explored what real prospects think of MLB’s proposal for the amature draft.

Josh Naylor and Austin Hedges got into an old fashioned shouting match at a Mariners/Guardians game. Hedges protested to an umpire that Naylor intentionally leaned into a pitch in order to reach base and advance runners.

Saw the line up, Suzuki has apparently learned absolutely nothing.

Soler and Lowe, but no Pazuzu.

Suzuki hates winning.

Moreover, Walton has to play 2B to get into the lineup with Soler sponging the DH at bats.

Perry wasn’t holding Suzuki back. Suzuki’s brain holds Suzuki back

I wanted to give Suzuki the benefit of the doubt, instead of immediately following the torch and pitchfork crowd.

Soler has got to play and without Trout, who else can play center other than Lowe?

Break up the White Sox, proving trades and tanking just might make a little difference. Watch them win the Central.

Perry was a mixed bag that was mostly bad. In recent years, he seemed to improve the Latin American effort but his drafting was never really very good and he did a very poor job at spending the money he had at the major league level. Instead of buying lots of bargains and lottery tickets, he should have purchased fewer high quality products.

I was reading the Perry’s bullpen article, thinking whoever wrote this knows his stuff. Same with the GM speculation article.

And that seems to me all Perry ever drafted, bullpen arms

A few days ago Gitch proposed 3 trades involving our largest trade pieces. If anyone is interested, since we have a new GM, where do we go from here. What should we do at the trade deadline this year. The fact is, that if we simply go into next year with the same roster, how does that move us forward from where we are. Even if we draft and develop better, nothing will change at the major league level for a number of years. Looking at the current MLB roster and with the knowledge we have regarding our current prospects, what’s the near term plan to improve and is there one.

The starting pitching is showing promise, even if we trade some. The bullpen needs a lot of work and there a number of position player holes. Who do you want to keep and who do you want to move. What we choose to do is tied with how long we believe it would take for us to be competitive. Considering how far below we are from recent payrolls and the money coming off the books at the end of the season we could have significant money to spend.

At this point, even though there are a few players I would like to keep, if we believe that success is a few years off, it might make sense to go the Gitch route and trade everything not nailed down. If you see a shorter path, who do we keep and who do we trade and where do we need upgrades.

Doing the same thing isn’t going to move the needle. We need to think outside the box.

I think Arte saw this as a reset year. Rendon’s money still counted against the Angels this year and they clear some more payroll this year. I’d address the bullpen with FA. There are lots of arms out there that we can get from FA and the draft. I’d try to acquire an OF and a 1B/DH if I was the GM. Trade Adell actually helps us, the guy just isn’t good. I’d be fine with a Rada/Siri combo in CF next year if they went out and got a legit OF to put in LF with Trout in RF.

I don’t understand why we would have pro-rated out Rendon’s remaining salary if the whole plan was to reset this year. Is Arte that strapped for cash?

If the goal was to clear the books and start fresh, then we should have just paid Rendon and been done with it.

What counts against the salary cap was all taken as a hit this year. At least I think so.

When they made the restructure they had just agreed to pay the Skaggs family and had not TV deal in place.

Arte was definitely in a bad place cash flow wise.

I’m going to do a series of article on this and here’s what I’m thinking:

  1. Extend one of Detmers or Soriano, trade the other. I would prefer to keep Detmers.
  2. Trade Adell for sure. Snag a catcher from Cleveland
  3. Call up Luke Murphy immediately and Chris Cortez in about a month to audition for bullpen gigs. Maybe Klassen as well.
  4. Get Caden Dana a few more looks at the MLB level/time with Maddux.
  5. If possible trade Bachman and Zeferjahn to Pittsburgh for their competitive balance pick.

Let Mozeliak really learn what the Angels have and don’t have before tasking him with a huge rebuild. There are some interesting guys like Joel Hurtado and George Klassen on the farm. Let him determine their best use.

I think next year could be a bunch of kids plus a couple of key free agents and fun to watch. Probably still not winning baseball but a team that feels like it is turning a corner.

I’m definitely on board with trading Soriano and keeping Detmers, as well as your other suggestions. If you had your 3 SSs in the IF next year, Guzman, Neto, and Peraza, I think that’s pretty solid, especially defensively. I also think they have some nice bench players in Walton and Grissom. They need to decide what their long term plans are for Meckler and Siri, and they also have Trout and Rada to think about. A lot of parts. I personally would like new middle of the order bats in RF or LF, and 1B, which I think would make huge improvements and balance out the line up. Trout is awful in RF, but he could play LF if you wanted Rada in CF and to lead off. The bullpen is the biggest factor right now keeping us from winning, but the line up still makes too many outs and not enough contact. There is also Raudi to consider. I don’t want to see musical chairs next year, I want to see a pretty set line up with a platoon if needed.

I need to see Peraza play the rest of the year. His hitting has really dropped off and he doesn’t BB.

I don’t know what to do with Trout. He hurts us defensively in CF but insists on playing there and gets his way.

Also, who is the real Lowe? The 1st version or the recent version? I am inclined to believe it’s the 1st.

And we need a catcher. even going back to the 2025 budget, with the payroll coming off would give us a lot to play with and likely make the team good enough to draw enough to make it work.

Not part of trades, but speaking of Maddux, I’m curious if Moz convinces Molly to sign him for the next couple seasons at least if Maddux is willing. If that happens then I will be convinced there is real change afoot.

I’m mostly keyed in on our starting pitching and the rotation is up to 3 good starts in a row. I’d like to see Soriano and Urena keep it going.

Speaking of Ryan Johnson — he has that feel of a reliable backend of the rotation innings eater as his floor. We’ve mishandled his development from day 1, but he’s growing on me

I kind of pegged him as a long reliever right from the jump but this is two decent outings in a row. He keeps the ball on the ground a lot. Just might be a back end guy.

He’s such an excellent strike thrower it would be a shame to limit him to the ‘pen. Gives me Chris Bassit vibes

yeah, it would have been nice to park him in AA for a year and really develop him as a starter but this is the Angels.

OT: Fir all of you 4th of July celebrants who like to purchase your own fireworks, I will be working the Villa Park Football/Band Fireworks booth today from 4 pm to 7 pm. Come and get your “safe and sane” fireworks, if it is legal on your town. We are the booth on the backside of the high school by the football fields. Mrs. steelgolf will be there from 10 am to 1 pm.

I live in Orange and have been buying my fireworks in VP for years. I’m glad that they’re legal in Orange(as of last year). I’ll stop by tomorrow when they officially go on sale, so I can make sure I get the good stuff.

Last year, I spent almost $30 on one fountain that was just insane.

2nd degree black belt and about to be 1st degree in Hopkido. She can hold a 1” thick board in one hand and break it by punching it with her other hand.. I think it makes her a more effective school teacher! 🤪

I’m surprised to learn the Angels have been playing .500 baseball in June, though that will change tonight. And they’ve outscored opponents 133 to 122 runs. Losing 11-12 to the A’s was a gut punch, but they’re not that bad recently. Insert grounds keepers meme for Major League here.

Now that Meckler is no longer on the All Star ballot, I’m done voting. I don’t believe Trout is an All Star this season, just a pretty good player with hamstring issues. May as well have Detmers or Soriano as the lone Angels representative, just don’t have them pitch and risk injury.

Trout is currently the 2nd best hitting CF in the AL by a wide margin, but he is behind Byron Buxton who’s 1st in OPS .898 to .866.

And it’s actually nice to see an Angel voted in by fans, rather than just the obligatory spot because every single team has to have a representative.

It’s a lifetime achievement award for fading stars like Trout. How many times have we seen that happen in the past, our guys being left off.. I don’t begrudge Mike an honorary position this year.
