Angels Fire Perry Minasian

Out of nowhere, the Angels have fired Perry. The platypus in an Angels hat is no more, and will be replaced by John Mozeliak. His tenure has been the entirety of CTPG, and while often ridiculed here and elsewhere, he ultimately was more of a puppet to Arte Moreno than his own platypus man. This is yet another GM change for Arte Moreno, who has gone through more GMs and managers in the last 16 years than winning seasons.

Farewell Perry, and thanks for the memes.

A very great and well written article on the firing, the team, the Org etc. Worth a read!

Great news. Mozeliak is the real deal when I expected us to get an executive from Portillos or LAZ Parking.

Kinda sorta. Reading the link FungoAle supplied I think the deals listed there are quite the mixed bag. More than a couple turkeys in that list. I think you can arguably say that the only great deal is the Freese deal and Freese made it look good by getting hot at the right time.

Outside of Freese it didn’t look like any franchise changing deals.

Arriving late to the party but not the celebration in seeing the proverbial Minasian taillights. A small step for Angels fans and a larger one for Arturo. I hope our new consultant doesn’t have to check in to the top floor before making a move. Putting the bus in drive and moving forward is a start. The timing was good for both the draft and the trade deadline and happening on the typical Friday Firing Day, but it finally happened as we all hoped it would come about and it will be interesting finding out what the final straw was. Next great news in the next two years is hopefully about the in with the new and out with the old ownership. 😀 😃 😆 😉 😋 😍 🙂 🎅 👍

Firing Perry changes nothing. Arte still owns the team and is the stubborn 80 year old billionaire owner. Nothing will change until he is gone – unless he actually listens to Mozeliak (whom I like).

There is no doubt in my mind Mozeliak would have traded Ohtani in 2023 or 2024 if he was the GM and Arte would listen. He would have definitely recommended it. He is a baseball guy.

The reality is Mozeliak is probably just comIng in to guide or advise on this next draft. Without him the team is rudderless going into the draft with no GM. It’s such a joke.

I don’t expect Mozeliak will be the GM or POBO or whatever. He’d be too expensive. He is essentially a consultant. He will likely also be involved in picking the next GM.

The fact that Arte did this when he did this is further evidence he has zero clue that HE is the problem. Perry is just the latest scapegoat.

So, for those of you who wanted Perry’s head on a stake – go out and tip over cars, light fires and celebrate. But this changes nothing in reality. It’s still Arte and his merry bunch of idiot front office who now have a decent high price consultant. If Molly Jolly or Crapino are fired, I’ll begin to take notice and have the faintest bit of hope.

I agree that Arte’s leadership remains core to the problem and that there can’t be meaningful change until he sells the team or relinquishes day to day control.

I respectfully disagree that Perry is the latest “scapegoat”. Perry was responsible for the drafts and interpreting Arte’s direction into actions that shaped baseball operations. As such, Perry has shared responsibility and accountability in the outcomes over the past 5 seasons. Lastly, Perry worked for Arte for four years and still signed the contract extension.

Moz is an experienced baseball executive. He knows what Arte is and isn’t. He didn’t need this job after his success in St. Louis. He comes into this gig with trust to bring change, and I’ll judge his performance on the actions he takes.

I consider it good that his consulting gig with the Angels ends this December 2026. He can provide his recommendations to Molly and Arte and walk away; he’s got no incentive to be stupid purely to keep his job.

John Mozeliak IS NOT THE NEW GM and IS NOT BEING CONSIDERED FOR THE OPENING.

I get the feeling a lot of folks didn’t catch that part of what’s going on. And, because it’s CtPG I also got the sense that some folks were already shit sniffing over John M because… who knows? He has met Arte and didn’t punch him so fk him? Arte derangement syndrome? Dunno.

I’d actually be fairly happy if he ended up our GM, or POBO or what ever bullshit title will make the whiny brigade on this site happy. We could do a lot worse and I doubt the guy takes the job and shows up with his two WS rings on to have Arte tell him who to draft. It is good that he’ll be here to organize the organization, what ever that means, and help hire a GM. He had 35 years of FO work I think? It’ll help.

But we’re still gonna run into a situation where the loud, ignorant and demanding manchildren among the Halo’s faithful will shit on what ever work he does. I just don’t see how he brings in anyone impactful to fix this situation unless Arte wants to change. Hell, I don’t see why he’d change now, just cause PTP is gone. I think PTP would have likely done some very different shit if Arte’d let him, why wait to do that stuff till June of 2026?

Mozeliak is the “real baseball man” so many of you red asses have been asking for and crying over since Joe Maddon left his stupid shit stain all over us. PTP was the young hire from a successful development background so many of us thought we wanted. We should be realistic about how much good a relatively competent guy can do here.

The hands down best drummer I know is in a totally crap band. He made his fortune playing songs I hate. The same holds true of most of the managers and FO guys we shit on around here. We say funny stuff about Turks Teeth doing a better job but honestly, having met plenty of these baseball guys myself, none of the geniuses on this site know half the shit most of the failures our org has run through find mundane. They are all really smart and know baseball. It just doesn’t count for much here. The only constants are the crap owner, the shit sipping fan base and a long string of names who have failed to qualify as “real mans of baseball”.

I hope Arte’s realized how bad off things are, panicked, fired his GM at a weird time, and desperately turned to the architect of the last great Cardinals teams and is willing to do what ever he says… but I doubt it.

There’s a lot of luck to this shit unless you are the Dodgers. David Stearns looks like a clown. Dave Forst can’t develop pitching. AJ Preller can’t judge character. Chris Young is now stupid, as is Craig Breslow. Mark Shapiro? Total fool. And don’t get me started on owners… Arte isn’t even close to the worst, not because he’s any good but because it can get REALLY BAD.

I guess what I’m really saying is that the Angels need to get rid of their buns uniforms and make the Strike Force Girls hot again. Maybe that’ll please the gods and we can win in spite of our asshole ownership like the Guardians.

If this new guy starts trading everyone, we know he convinced Arte it’s time to embrace a rebuild. That’s great news except that means Arte is staying on as the owner. Not great news, unless he has finally given up trying to run things and only requires a monthly update while getting massages at his AZ compound.

Or Arte is getting the front office staged in preparation to sell the team once the lockout ends next year. My vote is for this option.

Not sure how you stage a FO more than the GM is in the last year of his contract and the coaching staff on one year contract. Arte won’t give up control until he sells.
And I don’t think he sells until there is an over .500 w/l year.

This feels like Arte setting up for a sale. The only other thing that makes sense to me is if Perry insisted on trading Detmers, Soriano and Neto but Arte was having none of that and they butted heads ala Dipoto.

I’m hoping Jeff can find out if this was Molly’s doing and Arte ok’d it. Arte was already leaning in this direction. Certainly the search for someone with experience has been going on for a while. You don’t announce the interim hire if that wasn’t already in place before firing Perry.
I don’t see this as Arte setting up for a sale.

I’ll do my best. It is interesting the new team president specialized in Human Resources and has now made this move.

He’s the first experienced GM of the Arte era. And he’s going to help find the next long term GM.

I think those two are related. Just my hunch but I think Molly has convinced Arte he needs a real front office and help finding it.

You are giving Jolly and Arte way too much credit Jeff. And Mozeliak is essentially a consultant. The budgetary constraints, terrible front office, crappy farm and dumb organizational problems remain.

But I know – Sports Illustrated, access to stories, free food, happy happy happy.

That’s not it. I still rip the team plenty.

But there are two facts:

Jolly has been hired by good organizations and is better qualified than Carpino.

Mozeliak is better than Perry.

Now let’s see what they do.

Jeff has eviscerated Arte, Perry and Angels management and their moves. Molly has given him access, and perhaps gave him a feel something was going to happen. Which is a step in the right direction. No need to be a dick to him because he might have a bit of optimism or have some positive spin.

It’s not the optimism. It’s not the positive spin. And I’m not being a dick to him. I told him I think he is awesome.

My perception is that since Molly Jolly (I still can’t write that name with any belief she is in the upper echelons of this Org) greeted Jeff in the Diamond Club, things have subtly changed. The tone of articles have changed. Jeff has changed in my opinion.

I think this SI gig was a dream opportunity for him and the access to players and the Org is intoxicating. He doesn’t want it to be threatened with limited access like Sammy the Hat. So I perceive some journalistic independence and reality has been diminished.

It’s my opinion and I’m stating it. I still like and respect Jeff. But I think he is less independent in his analysis than he used to be.

Here’s where I am right now:

https://www.si.com/mlb/angels/onsi/a-new-era-in-anaheim-is-arte-moreno-finally-changing-how-the-angels-are-run-01kw51qy64rz

I’m super happy that Molly is Not Carpino. That’s a big thing. I really disliked Carpino.

I also like the fact she was hired in high level positions by ARCO and Disney and was their Financial guru for the Ducks and Angels including for the 2002 season.

Carpino was only hired by Arte. Huge difference.

The one gnawing thought is “why did she stay all these years?” That’s a legit reason to doubt her.

But, yes, I do think Molly presents a reason for optimism. And I wrote that months before I met her.

I’ve now spoken with her multiple times. She’s sharp and driven to improve the team. I also told her point blank if the team makes a move I think is bad I will say so.

Okay I’ll bite. She is probably great on the finance side of things. Maybe she balks at a long term contract for big dollars because the finances don’t make sense. Okay – got it. But what about the baseball evaluation. You can’t believe she is qualified to analyze players and performance from the baseball side of things?

BruinsAngelsKings

Reply to  Fansince1971

I’d argue she doesn’t need to be qualified to analyze players and performance from a baseball standpoint. What she does need is the ability to hire people who are qualified to do that work and trust them to do it well. Strong leaders understand they aren’t the smartest person in the room; they surround themselves with capable experts and empower them to succeed.

Is Molly that kind of leader? I’ve got no idea. But she should be given more than the 84 days since being named Team President on April 6, 2026, to influence the organization’s direction and reshape perceptions.

Theories:

Clearing house was always the plan, and the trade deadline allows Arte to reduce player payroll (trading vets for prospects)

Arte is going to put the team back on the market soon

Perry double-dog-dared Arte to fire him

Arte’s astrologers told him to do it today.

The timing likely has to do with the upcoming draft and whatever else Arte plans for the rest of the season. No need to allow Perry to undermine anything else going forward. His contributions end now. Someone else can bring perspective for that draft etc.
