Slugfest in Sactown Postgame

Seven runs in one inning! Is that even allowed? The Angels bats woke up in a huge way in the top of the 4th inning and had the best Halo Blitz we’ve seen in a while.

It was great timing as Jose Soriano was not his best tonight. The A’s plated one run in the bottom of the second then put up a three spot in the bottom of the third. That meant the Angels were in a 4-0 hole then all Hades broke loose.

Christian Moore hit a sac fly to punch in Nolan Schanuel then Denzer Guzman absolutely destroyed a baseball to get the Angels to 3-0. The kids are alright!

The train kept a rolling and all with two outs. Logan O’Hoppe and Wade Meckler reached base to extend the inning then Jose Siri roped a ball over the fence to push the Angels to a 6-4 lead.

Siri’s bomb went 444 feet, beating Guzman’s by 11 feet. Both balls were absolutely destroyed. With the Angels offense rolling, Zach Neto took his turn and cracked the third Angels home run of the inning and pushed the Angels lead to 7-4.

Neto had highlights on both sides of the ball tonight. At his best he is an electric player who is a ton of fun to watch. And he flashed his best tonight.

Soriano settled down and kept the A’s off the board in the fourth and fifth innings. After taking a break from bashing the ball, the Angels offense kicked in again in the top of the sixth.

Logan O’Hoppe scored the big blow with his 3 run bomb that plated Jo Adell and Oswald Peraza.

Sacramento was throwing out homers like Oprah used to hand out prizes to the audience. You get a home run! You get a home run! Nolan Schanuel gets a home run!

Normally a 7 run lead in the bottom of the sixth inning is enough to cruise to a win. But not this night and not with this bullpen.

Mitch Farris came in and started giving up base runners. When he gave up a run in the bottom of the 6th it cut the lead to 11-5. Not a big deal. But when he gave up a 2 run bomb in the 7th it suddenly felt like the score was a lot closer than 11-7.

And it was. Chase Silseth gave up a leadoff walk in the bottom of the 8th then a massive home run to Max Muncy and cut the lead to 11-9.

Sam Bachman came in to close out the game and gave up a one out double. But he stranded it to preserve the win.

That’s what I typed as Bachman served up an epic bomb to give up the lead and tie the game at 11. Yes, the Angels bullpen blew a 7 run lead prior to recording 12 outs.

A failure to score the inherited runner in the top of the 10th set up the inevitable: Kirby Yates. Amazingly he did not give up a run. But he did load the bases with one out and bring Nick Kurtz to the plate with a chance to win the game.

Samy Natera Jr. was brought in to face Kurtz. When a 3-1 fastball sailed high, Kurtz walked and won the game 12-11.

When we were up 10-4, I posted “10-4 over but not out”, you just can’t trust this Angels to complete a game for the Win for the last 10 years or when Smith & Street were finally done.

Boston at 30 wins, wow. It is hard to believe that there are so many bad AL teams this season. How many wins does Houston have?

That was such an Angels way to lose a game. Bachman throws a meatball for a 2 run blast to tie the game. At that point, we all know it is game over.

Three games I should have seen

May 17, 1998 – I’m living 3 to 4 miles as the crow flies to Yankee Stadium. A buddy says, “Want to go the game today?” I first say yes, but decide not to go because of a new girlfriend that had just relocated to the area. What happens? David Wells perfect game.

July 18, 1999 – I have great box seats with 3 buddies to the Yankees game. Same girlfriend guilts me into not going. Yep. David Cone’s perfect game. The guy that takes my place, a British guy that goes to his first baseball game. Tells me after – “I didn’t know baseball was so exciting.” (While we were definitely on the brink, actually broke up with the girl the next day – she was bad luck.)

June 19, 2026 – Living in Central Time -watched the Angels game for a while. We went up 11-4 and I decided to get some much needed sleep. I can’t believe I missed an epic tank.

I got to tell that story to Wells on the golf course in San Diego. He was laughing so hard – he calls Cone and asks me to tell him too. They both joke that everyone they meet tells them they were there – I’m the first not there story. They didn’t know if I made up the breaking up with her story – but when I told them I decided right after the British guy told me baseball was exciting. I told him, “No – it’s usually not. You just witnessed history and I have something I have to do.” Broke up with her right after. They were laughing hysterically.

This team It is not semi-bad. It’s really truly bad. It’s good to see all that negative energy we put into this team for years finally blooming into brown flowers that smell like piss. The ju ju was always real and now we have the team to match. It’s fantastic. I can’t wait to see how long our sad sack magic can keep this team this shitty. Two years? Five? Can they get worse? Maybe we can bitch wish our way to having a bunch of top prospects totally fail on us like the White Sox did a few years back. Bad roster, bad owner, bad FO, lame ass fan base… Who knows what we can accomplish together. Malaria? Why not?

At some point stuff’ll start breaking right for this team. Likely it will be when this current lot of stiff necked people are dead in the wilderness. But if I’m still alive it will feel nice to have been here in the burning dumpster when things are good.

Trade everyone we can. Or don’t. Who gives a shit? Get a new manager or GM or POBO. Or don’t. It likely won’t matter because no matter what they do they will be stupid. Get a new owner. Or don’t. Who cares? Unless new owner just buys us a play off team every year they will eventually be an asshole. They should just put a petting zoo in the outfield. Or give out free booze. If you can’t be good, be interesting.

When a team sucks so hard, from the owner all the way down to the fans and the shitty hot dogs and pizza they eat at games maybe we should try something drastic. Like an entire roster of guys that can’t read or speak English. Maybe if they are oblivious to the ju ju it won’t get to them? Just field a Japanese/Korean team and call it a day…. or make a reality show out of the team. Take a dozen of the loudest CtPG Guyz. Let them run the team for a year. If they don’t break .500 they get shot on fan appreciation day.

Nothing needs to change. We can make this situation work.

Great Post – really enjoyed reading it. The reality is that this team is not that much different than it was for the entire 1970s decade. I was there and I know a number of others here were as well. The team and its owner and front office all basically sucked in the 1970s. And that was with Ryan and Tanana. There were some players that I rooted for as a kid but looking back the front office, owner, and general manager, as well as the managers, all basically sucked. The team was awful for the entire 70s decade until the Yes We Can magical year of 1979. So you are likely right, at some point shit will start breaking in the team’s favor. History does have a way of repeating itself.. But it’s probably a long time away – as we are still in the middle of this shit decade it easily could go another 10 years and exceed the 1970s for futility.

Again, I loved your post

This mess is far worse than the 1970s Angels. There were at three good teams in that ten year period: 1970, 1978 and division winner 1979. Unlike the 12 year stretch of stinkeroo that is still ongoing now. The game last night was the icing on this rancid cake. Unfortunately there is much more icing being made.

I generally agree with you that the 70s were better than ’15-’26. However, the “newer” fanbase (ie. since 2000) became generally used to winning. The franchise had quite a run and created a larger fanbase. Few of those newer fans experienced how crappy this franchise was in 70s (with the few exceptions you noted). In many ways the current state of the Angels is much more consistent with the team’s long term history. The younger generation was very spoiled (including my kids who can’t believe the Angels are “so bad” since they were young in the ’95-’09 timeframe)/

Although the epic rants are entertaining, are you really saying “we” created the situation and circumstances that the franchise is in today? We have the ability to “will” a team to win 40% of the games they play just through “negative juju”?

He’s trolling. He knows damn well the people here are die hard fans, not your bandwagon only type. I’d suggest we’re more die hard than most fans around the league if we are still here with this franchise being one of the worst in baseball the last 15 years.

The mlb record for blown saves by a team in a season is 34. Our boys now have 15. With more than half a season to go, perhaps this can the year our boys can become the worst bullpen in mlb history. Outside of Romano’s 4 saves, the entirety of the team total is 3.

They will never get to the 35 blown saves because they would have to have a chance at 35 saves. Most of the time the team is out of it after the 4 th or 5th inning.

So… I was going to watch, but my brother said today was the best time to do father’s day things. His first father’s day, and my dad’s first as a grandpa. So we spent time together and it was nice. Very heartwarming and such.

I check on the Angel game once everyone went home and they blew it. Typical.

Saw the game tying home run live and rolled my eyes.

It was liberating to not think about the team for a while, just enjoying time with my family and being grateful for that. On Sunday I am making breakfast for my dad and we will watch the Angels together, likely with some alcohol.

Sorry you had to catch the end of the game as we all were watching with crossed fingers knowing what was going to happen eventually after Silseth got one pitch blasted, just didn’t expect Bachman to be the guy to blow it. It was fun for 8 innings and then the 9th and 10th. Glad you and your family could be together, that was special, the game wasn’t.

I should have gone out to Hillsboro last week to see Bremner. The good news is that he is stretching out, threw 58 pitches in 2 1/3. 3runs, 2 earned

Meanwhile Kade Anderson is 6-0 in AA, with a 1.13 ERA and a 0.665 whip, 82 Ks, 7 walks in 55 innings

The slugfest extended to the minors tonight with two sweet performances:

2 HRs from Raudi in AA and 2 HR from Juan Flores in High-A. Neither park environment exaggerates offense like all the other Angels parks.

Been trying to convince Angels Twitter that Flores is a top 5 prospect in the Angels system for a few months, but folks haven’t been having it.

A 20 year old catcher with 70 grade defense putting up a .281/.349/.551 slash in cold weather pitcher’s parks? 11 HRs, 23 XBHs in 45 games?

Not many of those around.

Do they know how to take a secondary lead? If yes bring them up.

I mean, there’s a world where Raudi might be a better call-up than Moore. He can competently play all outfield positions, and maybe he wouldn’t press as much under the lights?

I’m still really curious how hard it would be to get the Angels farm teams into more neutral venues. It’s really hard, unless we want them out in Texas somewhere….

So pathetic. Main two problems, the relievers come in throwing balls and non competitive pitches at that. Like every reliever tonight struggled with command. And the play that pissed me the most off is Christian Moore and his baserunning in the 10th. How in the fuck are there 9 year olds in little league with the ability to take better secondary leads than he took. First of all, he was closer to the base than the 3rd baseman. Why is the 3rd base coach not telling him to take a bigger lead? The catcher isn’t even going to want to throw down unless he has you out by 10 feet with a right handed hitter in the box because he doesn’t want to make an errant throw. And he wasn’t even moving towards the plate when the ball was hit. Like this is little league stuff, how do the Angels draft people that are just athletes and not baseball players. A baseball player knows how to take a secondary league. Sure seems like Moore is an athlete whose best sport is baseball.
