Thought the Detmers article was excellent.

Could tell the comments section was full of Angels fans because they were less analytical than the typical FG community and would just not accept Ryan Blake’s take that ERA is a shitty pitcher’s metric, or that Angels team defense could substantively contribute to the delta between Reid’s ERA and FIP metrics.

Despite the Angels having the worst team defense in the MLB over the span of 2022 to 2026 – basically the totality of Detmers’ career.

Houston is also terrible this year. Likely it’s a 2-1 split. But of the options, since you ask, I’d go with they sweep us….but as I said, I don’t think that’ll happen. What’s sad is that I don’t care either way. I’d like us to sweep so we can see the shufflebot. Hey, just take the first two, that’d be good. But it’s a sad season when the appearance of that shufflebot is more eagerly anticipated than being in contention.

Not sure how I feel about LeBron having seen the amateur/pro batting average correlation data shared here earlier… but that 60/60 power/speed package is surely enticing. If BA’s draft scenario were to play out in real life, when the Halos pick I think I’d root for a prep talent like Condon on a minor discount… just large enough to cover an overslot later. I want a bat this year and nothing on the board screams out at me… unless Ace Reese turns out to be this year’s Kurtz.

Generously, BA usually leaves their mock drafts and draft rankings outside the paywall.

Saw that one this morning – I’ve heard that the Angels have been scouting LeBron at the regionals, but it’s the first time I’ve seen him mocked to the team. It wasn’t clear that Collazo was confident about the match – seemed a rough guess, which included Dietz/Peterson, and a lot of high school names he didn’t divulge. (I imagine Condon and Carson Bolemon among them.)

LeBron is the most divisive first rounder in the draft. On tools, he’s a top five talent. On look, he’s a top five talent, though his defense was more inconsistent than usual early this season. He’s turned on at the right time – really shining for Alabama in the playoffs, and the team punched its ticket to Omaha this weekend.

It all comes down to a single question: can he hit?

He has four of five plus tools – he can play well anywhere on the dirt, was a top 5 shortstop in D1 ball in defensive runs saved, has a cannon, stole 40 bases this season, hit 16 HRs. But even after turning on the jets in the playoffs, he’s hitting .282, and there’s little precedent for first round draftees who hit under .300 in college ball becoming impact players.

Fwiw, while I think Condon would be an exciting pick, I don’t think he would come at much of a discount, if any. He’s a mid-first rounder, regularly mocked in the 11-20 region – and it often takes slot to keep the hot prep bats away from college. I think the Angels could get a discount on an arm like Bolemon though.

He’s been on my “no” list as well, though he does look like a different player in tournament play thus far. But there are so many other names on the board who have been stable performers across multiple seasons, and in different contexts. The Angels are too often lured by short windows of outperformance.

Assuming a guy like Bell or Burress doesn’t slide to them, if you’re willing to tolerate a little whiff, why not a guy like Ace Reese, or one of the balanced OF bats like AJ Gracia or Aiden Robbins?

If the Angels had a supplemental pick, you could contemplate chasing a power-over-hit guy like Jackson, Sorrell or Grahovac between the first and second rounds – but you really want to stick the landing on an early first round pick.

We’re so on the same page. I’m really high on Reese – I think his swing plays. I’m liking Robbins for a high strike out guy, (and I’m not like that with many) simply because he hits. I heard he’s looked good in the Cape – and he just posts numbers. Gracia is really intriguing to me – he’s an on base machine with some pop – but only watched him once. I was really high on Grahovac when he was a Freshman- and he’ll hit long balls – dude is a physical beast- but I’ve soured a little the more I’ve watched him. Just a gut feeling – he looks like a guy that can handle the college guys because of his physicalness- but seems like he’s going to struggle against better arms. I’d absolutely take a shot with Jackson in the second if he’s there.

Gracia is almost boring in a way – so stable and consistent – probably a 20-25 HR guys who hits for solid avg/obp in a corner. A GA type of presence. It’s easy to take those guys for granted, but they provide a lot of value over six years of control.

I think, unless something miraculous falls into the team’s lap, I like Dietz or Reese, or one of the well-rounded OFs like Gracia/Robbins. If not one of those four, roll the dice on a HS kid with some real ceiling.

To me, the only tool a position player must have is the hit tool. The others are nice to have (and are the easy one’s to see and judge) – but the warning signs are there in bright neon.

Please no. He has pulled himself out a little – but I’m not taking a position player striking out that much and hitting under .300. I’d rather go under slot and cut some HS deals. Do we really think he’s going to get better with wood. This high – I want a dude that rakes college level pitching. He got shredded in the Cape last summer hitting .111. The Cape starts this weekend – and he’s not scheduled to play. Guys often will at least go play for a few weeks. Looks like fools gold to me.

Also, the comp I’d suggest for Ace Reese is probably last year’s draftee Andrew Fischer. Same power ceiling and same questions about long-term position.

Kurtz was a crazy outlier even in college – carried a 30% (!!) walk rate in his junior year – twice his K rate of 16%. Guys like that just rarely come along.

Even then, if Reese’s ceiling isn’t Kurtz’s, the Angels still have nothing in their system that looks like him at the moment.

I’m excited to see Guzman. This just seems odd – with Madrigal playing well unless he’s very close to being moved. He could be a sweetener for a deal involving Soriano or Detmers. Milwaukee could definitely use him with Rengifo stinking up the place.

The timing on the Guzman call-up is a little surprising, but it makes little sense to give ABs to 32 yo Donovan Walton, and Madrigal is probably preferable at 2B?

I dunno, but I hope the plan is to play Denzer every day, otherwise it’s more player development malfeasance, and the team hasn’t had a good prospect on the leftfield dirt since Neto, so they better not f*ck this kid up.

Assuming and hoping they stick Denzer at 3B and give him starter reps. Kinda funny that our infield could feature 3 shortstops and the worst fielding one is the starting SS.

I’m interested where CMo continues to in SLC. Do they keep shuffling him around 2nd-3rd-LF or stick him in LF for a period of time

I’m a huge fan of versatility. If Moore can move around the diamond and hit doubles, that would be great.

I’m believing in Peraza right now and if Guzman can stick that gives them two flexible players. Grissom does not look bad as a utility option, either.

I just sighed a little when Jeff Fletcher justified the Walton call-up two weeks ago on his X account because he was the “better hitter”, and Denzer still strikes out too much.

Walton has a career OPS+ of 50, and Guzman’s strikeout rates this season are 4+ percentage points below the MLB average and 5+ percentage points below the PCL average.

Angels MSM rarely fails to be behind the curve in service of front office water-carrying.

Goal is to get to an ACL game this week. Today they play at 1pm – odd to see an afternoon game here in June- wtf? – anyway can’t make it.

Haley skipped over Tempe altogether and has been on a regular rotation in Rancho since the start of the season.

It was an aggressive placement, as the results show, but he’s 18+ months older than the other prep signs from last draft. He’s shown big-time strikeout stuff (49 Ks in 35 IP) and an advanced repertoire of pitches, but his command comes and goes, and there’s been a fair amount of traffic in his starts. Good one to leave at Rancho all year, and maybe a bit of next season as well.

It’s funny to me that we have so much venom for other fan bases. I understand not being a fan of their team with the history of cheating, etc.
Their fans are just like us…afflicated by fandom. Many times through family, location or simply which team they saw play first. If most of us had to do it again or had 20/20 foresite, we would never choose Angels fandom.

Well said Pedro. Not sure how I was spitting venom. Also I’m not sure how many times I’ve read Trashtros on here. I was at the first MLB game v Astros post covid. People poking fun of them through words seems fair and lighthearted imo, I definitely had to explain to my then 3 year old what was going on when people were throwing literal trash cans onto the field 4/5/2021. I didn’t think that was the worst thing ever either but comparatively to words, much more venomous.

Anyway, hatter’s links didn’t originally work when I clicked. Poking fun while also trying to draw attention to that was my goal. I also clicked on the previous thread and remember it, JJ literally asked

Let’s do some series preview pieces together when the Angels and Astros face off next year.

Very fair response. Sometimes it’s easy to miss intention on good natured sarcasm in print so my apologies.

I do think the Astro cheating thing was especially awful. It was pointed out by their ex-pitcher who leaked the story, how some young opposing pitchers who got called up for a cup of coffee never got another opportunity. Bad teams (Angels) call up lots of fringy pitchers to see if they translate to MLB. Those guys got lit up because Astros hitters knew what was coming. Imagine pooring your life and passion into that scenario? There are enough vagueries, politics and what ifs to suceed in professional sports without that nonsense.

Couldn’t agree with you more!

I’ve been on record saying something similar about Albert Pujols too. If it’s true he was older than advertised, which is what I personally believe, he was an adult in HS honing his craft against inferior competition. Different but similar to the Astros giving certain players advantages at the expense of the opposing players you mentioned!

As I recall, people weren’t exactly “delighted” when he was traded, but the prospect status of O’Hoppe eased whatever discomfort existed.

HOWEVER…..

Playing for this franchise and losing 60% of the games played would have sucked the joy out of his game, and he would have been another “change of scenery” trade candidate.

Marsh ultimately was lucky to end up in Philly.

Boy do I agree with the losing franchise analysis. I think it wears on young players. Sports is not a perfect science in that players can be affected by external factors. Motivation, excitement, teams gelling and winning – all of it can improve a young player’s focus as well as opportunities to help the team (such as RBI opportunities and playoff excitement). It is just a reality that playing on a bad team can drag on a player and I think you are right that Marsh was lucky to escape. I wonder if O’Hoppe would be better if he was a Philly?

The games at the ̶S̶E̶C̶ College World Series have been awesome. (Okay – Cal Poly advanced way over their heads – but congrats to coach Lee and his guys). The SEC is looking like they will have 5 of the 8 teams in – and one can argue – there were teams that didn’t get in that could have made noise. They are in a different class. Here’s the rub, I think any team could get hot and win it. Nobody’s pitching looks shut down dominant – but I give the edge to Georgia and Texas. Stankiewicz looked like a buffoon in that game. People talk about the pitching changes – but he had the defense way too far in when you only need an out. You’re very unlikely to throw a guy out at the plate with 2 outs because he’s going on contact- even playing in – so play for an out. That’s an easy play at normal depth. Play to win – not to not lose.

Stanky? Why did he pull his closer in the middle of an AB? Asinine I thought. But overall he’s been really good for SC – they haven’t made it this far in over twenty years- he’s a keeper.

Will be rooting for Troy, OU and the remaining Big 12 school, WV.

OU still has to close it out but they should make quick work of it today.

I’m not saying he’s not a keeper – and it’s easy to second guess, but when they said – outfield is in – before it happened, I said “why?” And then I saw how far they were in. Play it like it’s no outs. Get an out. 3-0 switch was bizarre. Sometimes managers over think things. And hey, I would probably too in the heat of such an intense battle. He could have looked like a genius if it worked, but it didn’t and he definitely didn’t.

The USC loss was painful. The foul ball was a tough play but could have been made. Then the final hit landing about a foot away from the center fielder’s glove.

That was the best series of the weekend. Every game was pitched well and had solid fundamental baseball.

Georgia/Miss was a slugfest. But give me a good overall game every time.

I watched a lot of games so far in CWS. I’m not exaggerating to say I’ve seen about 10 foul balls missed. Some were hard, but still plays you expect to be made.

The final two innings of that USC game were just so mismanaged. Starter in too long, relievers not ready, defensive positioning poor. Someone needs to sit that coach down.
