LA Angels Monday News Crash

Jack Kochanowicz is on the 15 day IL with the dreaded elbow inflammation. Sam Aldegheri has been called up to the majors.

Nolan Schanuel is back from the IL but Jorge Soler went on the IL with an oblique strain. The explanation of why Gustavo Campero was selected and placed on the IL is that he had an opt out clause. The Angels are apparently planning to keep him around. Shaun Anderson was designated for assignment on June 5 and Omar Martinez was designated for assignment on June 6. Reid Detmers is a top 10 starting pitcher in MLB.

Around Baseball

The Pirates just placed Chris Devenski on the 60 day IL. Andrew Wantz just got a minor league deal with the Cubs. The Yankees just placed Austin Wells on the ten day IL with cervical headaches. The Dodgers moved Tyler Glasnow to the 60 day IL. He is suffering from a back injury.

The Brewers acquired right-hander Joel Kuhnel from the Athletics for cash considerations. The Giants released left-hander Ryan Borucki.

I’m really happy the Angels avoided the 6-game retaliation sweep. We don’t have much, but completely sweeping the Dodgers last year and not getting completely swept this year feels good.

Excerpt from plaschke

“Who?” he said, “The Angels won the World Series. We are the No. 1 baseball team in the world. There is no reason for us to look over our shoulders.”
It was the most delightful introductory news conference I’ve ever attended, Moreno saying all the right things, doing all the smart things, and ultimately embracing his new purchase’s greatest asset.
“My responsibility is to take care of the Angel fan,” he said. “My job is to make sure we live up to the tradition. My job is to make people comfortable here.”
Twenty-three years later, those first impressions have long since been replaced by lasting erosions.
On nearly every weighty promise, with the exception of those beer prices, Arte Moreno has failed.
Take care of the Angels fans? Those fans profanely chant at him, loudly protest against him, universally despise him.

Not sure how or why this hasn’t been covered! Wish I know this guy’s Venmo so I could contribute.

Goal is to get to an ACL game this week. Today they play at 1pm – odd to see an afternoon game here in June- wtf? – anyway can’t make it.

Next is Wednesday at 6pm but that looks just as hot as today’s game, both about 100F. Maybe but I’d have to watch the Knicks sweep 🧹 sweep on the phone. Maybe.

Would like to see Slawinski- anyone know when he’s pitching again?

Finally did Haley already move up to RC? Looks that way – did I already miss him in Tempe?

6 outings with 6-7 days between, last pitched 6/6 so this weekend 6/12 or 6/13 looks most likely.

The Angels hosted a free baseball clinic at the Big A on Saturday. The kids had a blast and I really enjoyed covering it. Detmers and Meckler are cool dudes.

Read that yesterday! So cool. My kids just started playing baseball in the backyard randomly (I guess it only took them going to 100 games live with me) this weekend. I’m looking into getting them some lessons to catch & hit.

Hello,

Some of you may remember me from the offseason when I came by to ask for your guys’ advice and lean on your experience in moving a writing staff and reader community from an SBN site to a new independent site like you did. (we were formerly of the Crawfish Boxes but Vox unceremoniously dismissed the entire staff at the end of October)

Thank you guys again for your help in that comment section and also by e-mail from the CTPG staff, especially in regards to solutions for photos. It was tremendously helpful, and we’ve been pretty successful in our first season on the new site (even if the Astros themselves haven’t been successful in the season)

I just wanted to drop by and give you guys an update and say thanks ahead of the Angels-Astros series.

Our new website is The Launch Angle , I wrote a piece on 2026 Mike Trout for today’s Game Preview that some of you might like (or might not, I don’t know)

My account was disapproved? Was it because I tried guessing my password 20 times before conceding I needed to click the “forgot password/send reset link”?

Your links don’t work. Weird a trashy baseball team also has a trashy site.

Circle back with CtPG mastheads (as asked originally) for an Angels/Astros joint website preview instead of just trying to link what you wrote here. I’d much rather read a Jeff Joiner link than one from an opposing fan base.

TLDR: trout is washed, both angels and astros suck.

It’s funny to me that we have so much venom for other fan bases. I understand not being a fan of their team with the history of cheating, etc.
Their fans are just like us…afflicated by fandom. Many times through family, location or simply which team they saw play first. If most of us had to do it again or had 20/20 foresite, we would never choose Angels fandom.

Brandon Marsh is becoming a folk hero in Philadelphia. I wonder if he would have had that success in Anaheim?

As I recall, people weren’t exactly “delighted” when he was traded, but the prospect status of O’Hoppe eased whatever discomfort existed.

HOWEVER…..

Playing for this franchise and losing 60% of the games played would have sucked the joy out of his game, and he would have been another “change of scenery” trade candidate.

Marsh ultimately was lucky to end up in Philly.

Boy do I agree with the losing franchise analysis. I think it wears on young players. Sports is not a perfect science in that players can be affected by external factors. Motivation, excitement, teams gelling and winning – all of it can improve a young player’s focus as well as opportunities to help the team (such as RBI opportunities and playoff excitement). It is just a reality that playing on a bad team can drag on a player and I think you are right that Marsh was lucky to escape. I wonder if O’Hoppe would be better if he was a Philly?

A good friend of mine is in the upper echelon of NFL for analytics. We often talk about human factors that cannot be quantified. It’s a thing.

Not sure about how O’Hoppe would feel, but I’d feel better if he were in Philly.

The games at the ̶S̶E̶C̶ College World Series have been awesome. (Okay – Cal Poly advanced way over their heads – but congrats to coach Lee and his guys). The SEC is looking like they will have 5 of the 8 teams in – and one can argue – there were teams that didn’t get in that could have made noise. They are in a different class. Here’s the rub, I think any team could get hot and win it. Nobody’s pitching looks shut down dominant – but I give the edge to Georgia and Texas. Stankiewicz looked like a buffoon in that game. People talk about the pitching changes – but he had the defense way too far in when you only need an out. You’re very unlikely to throw a guy out at the plate with 2 outs because he’s going on contact- even playing in – so play for an out. That’s an easy play at normal depth. Play to win – not to not lose.

STFD, chicken hawks!

Watched one inning of Freeway Series and four SuperReg games.

Stanky? Why did he pull his closer in the middle of an AB? Asinine I thought. But overall he’s been really good for SC – they haven’t made it this far in over twenty years- he’s a keeper.

Will be rooting for Troy, OU and the remaining Big 12 school, WV.

OU still has to close it out but they should make quick work of it today.

I’m not saying he’s not a keeper – and it’s easy to second guess, but when they said – outfield is in – before it happened, I said “why?” And then I saw how far they were in. Play it like it’s no outs. Get an out. 3-0 switch was bizarre. Sometimes managers over think things. And hey, I would probably too in the heat of such an intense battle. He could have looked like a genius if it worked, but it didn’t and he definitely didn’t.
