Angels Lose 5-2 Postgame

OK. Zach Neto, Jorge Soler, and Mike Trout had good numbers against Davis Martin in very small sample sizes. How did that play out? Not so great. At the start of the day, the Angels were only a half game out of last place in the AL West and on a four game losing streak. On the plus side, today was Soriano Day.

Now for the dreaded bullpen availability.

On with the recap! Zach Neto got a hit and picked up a stolen base on this bizarre pitch that Gameday called a 39.3 MPH curve ball.

Jose Soriano struck out the side in the first inning but gave up a leadoff homer in the second inning to make it 1-0 White Sox. In the third inning, Mike Trout got hit by another pitch. The Angels get a man on every inning but fail to score. Jose Soriano walked the bases full but got out of the jam unscathed.

For inning number 4, Nolan Schanuel got a one out double. Jo Adell got a base hit up the middle to score Schanuel. 1-1 tie.

Sebastian Rivero got a two out single to send Adell to second. Unfortunately Adam Frazier grounded out. Sam Antonacci singled and then Drew Romo hit a two out homer to make it 3-1 White Sox. Luisangel Acuna single and was gunned down by Rivero trying to steal second.

In the fifth inning, Zach Neto led off with the seventh Angel strikeout. Mike Trout singled. He then stole second.

Jorge Soler walked but Nolan Schanuel grounded out to end the top of the fifth. Soriano got two outs and then Miguel Vargas singled. Colson Montgomery also got a hit to put men at first and third with two outs. Everybody went out to check on Soriano as though he was injured but he stayed in the game. He got Austin Hayes to ground out to end the inning.

In the sixth inning, Sebastian Rivero got a two out hit on a fly ball to center. Sean Newcomb came in to pitch for Davis Martin. Oswald Peraza pinch hit for Adam Frazier. He struck out. Brent Suter came in to pitch for Soriano. Suter retired the first two batters before giving up another two out homer to Drew Romo. 4-1 White Sox. Suter got Acuna to ground into the third out.

In the seventh inning, Zach Neto struck out for the hat trick. Mike Trout walked. Vaughn Grissom pinch hit for Yoan Moncada. He struck out. Jorge Soler got a base hit to advance Trout to second. Nolan Schanuel grounded out. Joey Lucchesi came in to replace Brent Suter. He gave up a hit to Andrew Benintendi who was replaced by pinch runner Derek Hill. Munetaka Murakami singled to send Hill to second base. Lucchesi walked Miguel Vargas to load the bases for Colson Montgomery with no outs. Montgomery almost walked in a run but he was struck out after a crucial challenge by Rivero. Jose Fermin came in to pitch. He got Austin Hayes to hit into a force out at the plate. Fermin hit Sam Antonacci to drive in a run but the Angels challenged. The ball hit his jersey, though. 5-1 White Sox. Chase Meidroth grounded out to end the inning.

In the eighth inning, Jo Adell struck out and Josh Lowe homered. 5-2 White Sox.

Sebastian Rivero grounded out to third. Oswald Peraza struck out and blew the Angels last challenge. Jose Fermin hit Drew Romo to put a man on with no outs. He retired the next three batters in a row.

In the ninth inning, Zach Neto struck out to earn his golden sombrero. Mike Trout walked again. Vaughn Grissom hit into a double play to end the game. The Angels lost 5-2.

No way Neto should be batting lead off at the moment

Has the club called up Nelson Rada?

They should consider moving Peraza to leadoff for a week to see how it goes. Grissom should also be considered. We’re all tired of seeing Neto in this slot.

That would certainly make more sense than any of our line ups so far or you could flip Trout and Peraza.

I saw some pretty harsh comments re: Trout in the game thread. My response would be that the guy who got on base 4 times tonight is not the reason this team sucks. Too many inconsistent hitters and the worst bullpen in living memory.

Kid Trout, reclaiming glory in 2026 to pave the way for a trade to a contender. Soriano and Trout, two best things going for the current regime.

FWIW, Trout is currently:

2nd in Runs (28)
7th in HR (9)
1st in Walks (32)
3rd in OBP (.436)
5th OPS (.988)

He’s also stolen 5 bases without being caught. The batting average is up to .248

The comment I saw wasn’t about his play on the field, but rather that they don’t feel bad for him being stuck on the Angels in light of the fact that the Skaggs trial revealed that he’s kind of a garbage person.

Or at least was a garbage person when he was younger.

Obviously, Arte is to blame for everything but Perry has had 5+ years to fix the bullpen and every year it seems to get worse. If we had a somewhat competent pen we’d be above .500 right now.

Does any other team have a leadoff hitter that strikes out this often? Damn. Leadoff hitters set the tone and boy does Neto set an awful tone most days. Any other team he would hit 6 or 7.

No because Zach leads the league so no other team has any hitter who strikes out as often.

This is the kind of story I hate. The Big A has rats? I’m sure Yankee Stadium and Wrigley are rat free? How about that baseball haven Chaves Ravine? Yeah no rodent issues in downtown LA.

Well, almost the end of April and I would say that they are out of the playoff race. No way they even sniff .500 with this pen.

Way to let down your ace pitcher. Soriano did not have it today so the bats needed to pick him up. That didn’t happen, just poor team baseball all around this past week I guess. Neto sure looking like he wants the Joey Gallo ‘swing and miss’ trophy this year.

Well, The Angels are definitely picking up where they left off last year. Complete Suck! Yeeeesh.

Even though the record is the same they look worse in some ways. I have to give Perry credit for Grissom, Peraza, and Frazier, who we should keep going forward but everything else has been a complete disaster. I don’t think I felt like this about the team until much later in the year.
