I saw some comments re online videos from Angels fans re Ponce signing with the Blue Jays. Ponce took a nice pile of money and a three year deal from a team that was in the WS last year. Angels fans commented that basically we “blew it” or “missed” on the guy.

It made me wonder. Do Cleveland fans do the same? Or Marlins fans? Why do these people think Ponce would pass up THAT contract to come here? He certainly wouldn’t do it for the Royals or Rangers or Rockies. Even if they paid him a couple million extra per year. And those same fans would be pissed at Arte overspending on a risky pitcher if he’d signed here for say 3/39M.

Are there Marlin’s fans saying “Bendix missed on Ponce” today? Is this difference in fan perspective, if it exists in a high enough percentage of Angels Fanatics, the reason that Arte doesn’t rebuild, he reloads?

The whole “GO FER IT” thing last July kinda shook me. I was always of a mind that Arte is a bleary eyed fool who is the ONLY one that can’t see that we have no shot at the post season in any given year and he keeps going against the thinking of the vast majority of Angels fans. But man, it really seems like, even after ten years of suck, a ton of the fans might not realize that we are the Twins, Guardians etc… with better weather (for what that’s worth to an athlete that spends winter where ever he wants) and higher taxes. There is nothing special about playing in Anaheim to most players, but a lot of us seem to think there is and baseball players should act accordingly….

I was willing to believe the guy would be successful, but I knew the Angels have too many holes to fill to be blowing that kind of money on one guy.

The Angels are just going to have to grind their way through 2026 without risking big contracts.

Good comments. Fans need to realize there are other teams — and most of them have a better track record of being well run in recent years. The same might apply to Mullins. He could go to Tampa (and did) which has often been a playoff team and low budget contender. Or he could come here with quality youth behind him and play for a team likely to be out of it by June and looking to trade him. He made a logical choice irrespective of whether the Halos were even in the running.

It’s just a strange thing. It seems like the fans of other teams I follow kind of understand, but a lot of us Honks don’t. If the money is around the same, players will sign with the Red Sox, Dodgers, Yankees. Next, they will sign with other play off teams. Next tier, the Diamondbacks, partly because they seem to contend often and because half the players live in Arizona seemingly.

After that we’re all just a lump of teams. And paying a guy an extra four million doesn’t move you up into the next tier.

Sure, there are outliers like Charlie Morton and Sonny Gray who have specific desires. When they are good it seems like a lot of guys want to play for St Louis. But in general, it seems like Tigers fans, Reds fans, etc aren’t nearly as frustrated when a guy signs with a team with more money or better play off odds.

Side note. Marlins fans seem to have a lot less “I can’t believe this player doesn’t want to live and play in paradise” thinking. And Miami is actually an exciting place to live while Yorba Linda is not.

It just seems like it’s an added personality trait we have that makes us more miserable.

I’m thinking its about 80 (PM)/ 20 (AM). Arte does not get involved with the Stephensons, Lagares, Fowler, Thors, Claudio, Cishek, Moncadas, Hendricks and Newmans etc. of the world, only when the bigger players come along. Perry has a budget to work with and he’s responsible for the roister. I’m sure AM had to sign off on Kikuchi but not a Hendricks or newbie Alex Manoha. Just my thoughts and why I lay the roster construction at the feet of PM.

the main problem is Perry typically has enough budget to add 2-3 good players but needs to add 8 so he’s bargain shopping.

The Stephenson deal when there was still plenty of starting pitching available was stupid. That’s definitely on Perry.

All the other low cost busts are just the risk of signing risky free agents. Moncada was available for $5 million for a reason. But it does seem like Perry has performed spectacularly poorly overall in free agency outside of Kikuchi and Jansen.

Yup. If Trout or Pujols or Hamilton or Upton or Wells or Rendon or any mix of those would ever actually work out our GMs would only need to add a couple mid free agents and a couple depth guys each year. There’s just no way to pay two or three mega contracts at a time and then fill eight plus roster spots well PLUS make up for the Ohtani not being able to pitch or Pujols sucking or what ever.

I for one thought that Ponce was a missed opportunity, but not a fatal one. I mean, the body is pretty much already room temp at this point. I didn’t mourn for the lost opportunity, but it might have been a way to sign a decent pitcher on the sly.

Many Angel fans live in the OC which is a comparatively wealthy area. Thus, the entitlement complex and anger when other teams get nice things and the Angels do not. Its also a fan thing (obviously) but many Angels’ fans do it in a very whiny and entitled manner.

Maybe that’s it. A team like the Mets or Phillies. They have a ton of money. Huge fan bases too. Plenty of wealthy fans. But those wealthy fans are very intermixed with people from Queens and South Philly etc etc. Maybe that over all mix just naturally suppresses some of the bitch tendencies? Sure, they expect their teams to go after guys, but they also understand that other teams are gonna sign good players too.

It’s hard to tell. I’m not on their boards much, but it seems like Philly fan generally has their hair on fire about it being too nice a day out….

Look, I, as many here, have been an Angel fan for 50+ years. I have certainly seen my fair share of heartbreak and disgust with only a modicum of winning seasons over that time.

Blaming our fan’s frustration some theory that OC’s socio economic status has generated some sense of entitlement is the biggest bunch of bullshit I have ever heard.

Good players playing on the field can solve a lot of problems. I actually do trust Mike Maddux to filter our pitchers out. There’s no way and old cagey , legendary “baseball guy” volunteers to come here to be bossed around by Arte . And by volunteer I do mean it because he could go almost anywhere else and still get paid. He’s also not a young guy trying to raise a family or anything . He came here and will do what his expertise leads him to. I mean if he comes here and tries different pitches etc

Of all the plethora of coaching positions these days that team want to fill, I feel the pitching coach is really the only one that matters. Getting a veteran PC with a track record is important. No more stabs at hiring wanna bees. I’ve witnessed Ron Perronoski with the Dodgers turn other teams discards into valuable assets on many occasions.

And agree, good talent can overcome shortfalls.

first days of Ron in Tempe a couple of years I met a young man about 30ish who showed up for the few days in a brand new Angel jersey with 37 Washington on the back. He was from Boston and wasn’t an Angel fan but just a huge admirer of Wash’s and his career in baseball.
