LA Angels Monday News Crash: Torii

Torii Hunter will probably also get his shot at interviewing for the Angels manager position. Perry Minasian discusses the Angels offseason plans. Detmers is going to be a starter next year. They want to move Mike Trout back to a corner outfield spot. The article was mostly about patching holes rather than being competitive.

Boston, Cleveland, Cincinnati, and San Diego are out. And then there were eight.

Another 14 players elected minor league free agency, including Jose Quijada. This is a preview of the major league free agent catchers. Curt Casali just plain retired.

The Rangers hired Skip Schumaker as their manager, so he’s off the table. The Mets Andy Green took himself off the table. The Giants interviewed Kurt Suzuki in their search for a new manager.

Athletics outfielder Lawrence Butler had patellar tendon surgery and also a platelet rich plasma injection in the other knee. Tyler Locklear of the Diamondbacks will have both elbow and shoulder surgery. Luis Garcia of the Astros had Tommy John surgery.

Oof, just catching up on the news that Bremner is not pitching at instructs due to elbow soreness.

I mean, pitchers get injured. But one of the potential upsides of the Bremner pick was that he didn’t have the intense mileage of Doyle and Anderson, who were rode long by aggressive collegiate coaches through the playoffs.

I’ve gotten the sense all along that, while they scouted him a long time, the Angels draft room pivoted to Bremner pretty late, and I wonder how thorough they were in reviewing medicals. Even in interviews with Bremner, he suggests that he only became aware of the Angels serious interest very close to draft time.

his MRI was clean. I really don’t think there’s much to worry about

Maybe he didnt have the “intense” mileage of those two, but of the 3, he’s the only one that pitched for the collegiate national team the summer prior

We’ve seen injuries cascade despite “clean” MRIs on this team. If they’ve shut him down for the time being, 4+ months after his last competitive pitch, I take nothing for granted. His success is going depend a lot on his slider usage and his FB velocity and shape – it’s going to be tough to progress with either if he has recurrent elbow inflammation.

Pitching three innings for Team USA in August of 2024 doesn’t strike me as high mileage by any stretch. And the Gauchos were relatively conservative with Bremner over his career – shutting him down in cold weather, limiting him to 5 IP in many starts. His longest outing in 2025 was seven innings.

What strikes me as high mileage is 130 pitches over 9 IP with Anderson, or Doyle closing games on short rest after starting in the super regionals. It’s long outings and irregular rest that tend to precipitate UCL trouble, per many studies.

I mentioned this yesterday when I read the article. This is what stood out to me

“ Minasian said (as relayed by Sam Blum of The Athletic) that he and owner Arte Moreno “haven’t gotten into” the details about the club’s budget for next year.”

A well run organization would plan everything well in advance. It wouldn’t be this lackadaisical. It sounds like Perry and Arte are doing “whatever” on the fly. By not knowing what the budget will be on October 6th they have no strategy in place for free agency. Aimless.

What they need to do, and have no interest in doing, is plot out their next five years. That would mean they would know well in advance what their budget would be! That would mean there would be a direction.

One more thing, I’m paraphrasing here, saying they’d like to win some games “for the fans” makes me translate that as “we, the front office, don’t care that much but we have to win a few to get people to come to the park.” It’s an admission that attendance is more important than having a good team.

Ok I’ll make some coffee now and calm down

The fact that Minasian is returning and he is a lame duck as well as the manager is all we need to know. It’s very troubling that a rebuild is being deferred yet another year. Aside from a terrible 26 and 40 man, I think the drafting may have been the worst ever where our favorable draft position was completely wasted. The first round pitcher was low ranked and already injured and the second round was a relief pitcher. He just doesn’t have a clue.

It’s almost like he can’t come out and say “We’re pretty fcked. Still suffering the long term effects of chasing the Pujols/Trout window, then chasing Ohtani. I wish they hadn’t given Trout this huge contract, now I have to play with two DHs, a RF and a left fielder. We have no solid TV deal and some dead junky’s wife is suing for half the value of the team, so I have no idea what the payroll will be. Not that it matters because the FA options at CF/3B where I need guys suck and cost a lot. I’m being forced to hire a pile of memberberries for a manager. Other than a few pitching prospects we have no farm. I drafted pitching and hoped to trade at the deadline for position prospects, that got screwed and I had to come out and say some bullshit about competing late into a season because Arte and CtPG Guy wanted to go for it. All that aside the future looks bright, as long as you consider 75 wins good. I took this job knowing that the rest of the MLB knows that if I can work for this owner and fanbase for a few years and not drink myself to death I will succeed anywhere else. I’m gonna go down a six pack of beer and eat an entire large pizza now. Fck you Sam.”

It’s like I always say. If you have been watching baseball for longer than six months and you’re still getting mad when the GMPOBOEIEIO of your team doesn’t come out and say anything of substance YOU are likely the idiot cause that’s his job. Poop out the fluff. Even when they say some sort “We have to do better. Standards. Starts at the top. Me is bad.” it’s just accountability flavored fluff. If they say that stuff and it makes you happy, again, you’re an idiot.

Can you imagine if Nick Krall, who is a POBO and is thus supposed to be able to handle the owners and speak truth to power with his unicorn magic, was actually able to speak his mind about NOT trading for Eugenio Suarez after the Reds offense wimped out against the Doyers? It’s very likely the Castellinis just didn’t want to pay Suarez for 2 months and give up too many cheap kids.

It’s time to reload and get a new GM so we can whine about the same shit with a different guy. My only hope is that they hire a super old GM. A guy who isn’t looking to protect an extended career. Maybe he’ll go all “crazy old man” and give us some sound bites that make me feel potent while nothing much changed because the C Suite is still the same garbage.

Angels are not the only org in this position. TV deals expiring and MLB has not announced what revenue is replacing expiring deals. And of course now would be a great time to have a lockout while trying to get streaming deals.

They plan to have Trout play the OF at least part-time. Same with Soler I believe. They also have Adell and Ward. Importantly, however, the article noted significant interest in a new CF. You can do the math. If they bring in a starting CF, that makes 5 OFs that all expect decent playing time. That doesn’t really work.

They need starting pitching and the secure the bullpen. If you watch these playoff teams, they have 4-6 legitimate retrievers throwing in late innings and can bring solid guys in 2-3 days in a row. The Halos don’t have that. Particularly with no Kenley and Detmers starting. Garcia may be back but he is 38 or older. He might pitch fine but isn’t reliable.

They need to do some serious work.

I wouldn’t be against that idea. They are stuck with Trout and his NTC, but everyone else is fair game, or as in Soler’s case, just DFA him and eat the money. No reason to field a strike out machine who is atrocious at defense.

Actually, Soler is who you keep cause you’re stuck with him. The whole team is scrapped and then you have Trout/Soler as the exciting power duo you still have to pay while the rest of the team is 23 years old.

I would still jettison Soler. He does nothing for team, can’t play defense, strikes out a lot, like a whole lot, and is not part of any future plans. So why waste a year with him, let some other team play where he is a better fit.

If the front office is rostering him as a RF/DH, he’s 100% blocking Rada, as the field manager is going to play Trout, Adell and Ward every day they also play Soler.

If Trout weren’t on the team, I’d say roster Soler. With both of them on the club, no OF prospects will get a chance, absent injury.

(And that includes guys like Moore, who should likely be sniffing more LF innings himself.)

Looked at Soler’s 3 year run prior to becoming an Angel and his K’s were 142, 141, 141 in his full seasons.

That isn’t great, but with a career OBP of .328 isn’t horrible, either.

A typical year from Soler would put him 4th on the team in OBP and 5th in K’s.

The issue with the team is that only 5 guys had an OBP that started with a 3 last season. 5 on the entire roster.

Only 6 had an OPS+ of 100 or greater and Moncada was one of them.

gitchogritchoffmypettis

Yeah. Because we are who we are we bitched like we just got stabbed with a stick when we got Soler. He’s not that bad. Not GOOD either but not bad. If he were the “power only” number six hitter in a line up you’d be doing great. He got hurt. And the team sucks. And Trout sucks and needs to DH. In the land of hind sight, where CtPG Guy has a castle on a hill, Soler is a bummer. In reality he’s a marginally good idea. If he has an above average year he’s an even better idea, especially for a team that had no power in 2024.

The Angels production at DH in 2024 was abysmal. Soler was supposed to take it to average or perhaps a bit above.

For a non-prospect and some of Arte’s money it was an OK deal.

I don’t see 4-6 legitimate relievers on Yanks or Doyers. Most teams, even playoff teams, don’t have that many.

Let’s call it as it is. Perry went out there and basically said nothing that was not obvious from a player standpoint. The team needs pitching- no shit Sherlock.

Additionally, he emphasized the importance of getting the manager hire “right” which completely overlooks the overall lack of importance of a field manager.

He blamed this season on injuries (ignoring that the team stayed relatively healthy) and the field manager issue. Sheesh.

How about the mediocre drafts including drafting 20 pitchers and not one is impactful. How about the crappy scouting and player development? How about non-baseball people being in the highest ranks of the Organization and making key baseball decisions. It’s a total and complete shit show.

If he blamed any part of the team’s non-contention in 2025 on injuries, he’s now simply lying, in the most baldfaced way possible. The Angels were one of the most fortunate teams in the MLB on the injury front this season, and only really sustained multiple impactful injuries after they were already out of the playoff hunt.

To translate the drivel: The Angel’s 2026 strategy is to try everything again that didn’t work in 2024 and 2025.

“First and foremost, it’s pitching,” Minasian said. “We’ve got to pitch better. That’s No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3.” (Editorial comment: DUH!)

Minasian added that they will “look at all different avenues to make the rotation significantly better.” (Editorial comment: Every avenue has dumpsters, so Perry can do loads o’ diving)

Minasian also said that Christian Moore will “come into camp and compete in some form or fashion,” which also suggests the Angels consider second base to be an open position.
(Editorial comment: Yes, your top draft pick has looked overmatched thus far)

Minasian also said the Angels will look to upgrade at center field and third base. (Third baseman Anthony Rendon, who had hip surgery this spring, still hasn’t begun baseball activity, Minasian said.) (Editorial comment: DUH!)

Minasian revealed Saturday that left-hander Reid Detmers will join the rotation in 2026.
(Editorial comment: Sure, why not boost the opponent’s batting average)

Minasian didn’t close the door on Jo Adell returning to center field, though. While he acknowledged that center field is “from a defensive makeup standpoint, not the best position for him,” he said the Angels played better when they had Adell in center.

They’d like to have Mike Trout back in right field, instead of limited to designated hitter.

Minasian also acknowledged the Angels need to get better defensively. (Editorial comment: DUH!)

When asked if the Angels are close enough to contend next season, Minasian was noncommittal, as usual.

“I don’t make predictions,” Minasian said. “The goal this offseason is to make the team as good as we can make it. I understand we do this for the fans. This is the reason why we play, and they’re the ones who support us. They come out. We’re going to do everything in our power to build a team that’s capable of going out there and winning night in and night out, and a team that the fans really enjoy watching an exciting brand of baseball.”
(Editorial comment: Completely and utterly full of shit!)

If Adell goes back to CF and Tout plays RF, they have learned absolutely nothing. The team may have had a better recored when Adell was in CF but Adell was much worse defensively in CF than RF. He says this after he says they need to get better defensively. He really has no idea what he’s doing.

We’re going to have Adell in CF, Trout in RF, and Soler DHing. They might trade Adell and get a new CF but then when Trout get’s hurt, Soler will play RF. This is so predictable.

The good news is that after next year, Perry will be gone along with most of the players and they’ll have a clean sheet with yet another new manager to go along with their new GM.

No matter who plays 3B, they will not be an offensive upgrade over Moncada.

They would actually be better off if they just stuck Teodosio in CF. Since their SS can hit, Teodosio can be Mark Belanger in CF if they really want to be better defensively and give Rada another year.

But it’s basically the opposite of what Minasian said – he felt that the team “played better” with that defensive configuration, with Adell’s defense as-is.

It’s abundantly clear to me that really nothing in the early season W-L record is traceable to the Angels atrocious defensive alignment with Adell in center and Trout in RF – they won despite that.

Meanwhile, after missing all of May on the IL, Trout actually played virtually every day when kept at DH from June on. They have two plus or plus-plus defensive options in CF with Rada and Teo. And Adell’s comfortable in RF, and has been above-average there in the past.

Reverting to the early 2025 defensive configuration on the premise that the team mysteriously and inexplicably performed better then is one of the more imbecilic propositions I’ve ever heard Minasian float. There’s all sorts of mumblespeak and evasions that tumble out of that dude’s mouth that are entirely sourceable to his role as Arte’s emasculated purse puppy, but putting Adell in center, Trout in right, and benching Rada/Teo seems to be an innovation all his own.

We both know the reality even if Perry won’t say it:

They have 4 outfielders on the roster and they will shoehorn them into the lineup even if the defense suffers.

Adell needs to play somewhere and CF is the only really open position.

I’ve actually wanted them to go with Teo. If he bumps up to just a .220 average he’s a plus value player. It’ll likely happen after Trout gets hurt playing the OF. It was shocking how bad he was in RF.

Rada just has some of the most elite plate decisions in the minor leagues – like, two separate Baseball America features on it elite.

No, he can’t hit the ball hard. But there’s a non-trivial chance that he can pull off a couple seasons like Pierre, Arraez or Jacob Wilson. And I want to see if he can do that….like next year.

So Teo can take a seat, to my mind. But keep him on the bench, and in reserve, in case of injury, which is inevitable.

gitchogritchoffmypettis

I’m all for Rada too. Hell. If they DID SOMETHING and traded both Adell and Ward this off season for some position prospects and then we were stuck with Rada/Teo and some pile of Trout/Soler/Campero I’d actually be fine with that as an OF on a rebuild team.

Rada doesn’t really need another year though – he’s checked every box, and was outperforming every Bee on last year’s team – guys on average 6-7 years older than him.

And as good as Teodosio is, Rada is also a plus defender, and the gap between him and Teo is not significant enough to merit just having Rada spin his wheels in the PCL. IMO, Rada should be the everyday CF, and Teo a bench guy for pinch running and late innings defense.

Under this scenario, the smart thing to do would be trade Ward and/or Adell to fill other needs.

I think the ship has sailed on Ward. He’s making about what he’s worth now.

Adell, however, could be flipped for something useful while creating a more logical roster. Defensively Adell in RF with Rada in CF would be ideal but with the Trout/Soler redundancy that is difficult.

This next year I see Soler as the DH, Trout in RF, Rada in CF, and I don’t know in LF, Although it may be Ward. There just isn’t anyplace for Adell to play.

Ward and Adell have such short runways, it makes sense to move them both. You don’t even have to commit long term, just sign a bunch of one year deals and then other than Trout you have no liability after 2026.

Trout will be on the IL after a month in right field.

The rational thing to do is to put Rada in CF, put Adell in RF, and Trout at DH.

That means trading Soler for whatever you can get, and shopping Ward for pitching or young OF/3B bats. As you say, he’s no longer a discount play.

Personally, I’d make a run at Bellinger (no QO attached) for LF, and if they struck out there, retain Ward in LF until the deadline.

The Angels aren’t going to contend next season, despite the FO lies to the contrary, then 2027 could be a complete mess due to the lockout. Meanwhile, Trout is only getting older, while Adell is gone after 2027.

All true and I agree. I just don’t think that is what they will do.

What they should do and what they will do is always leagues apart.

But have to keep advocating for sanity as a fan, even if it’s in a fantasy universe apart from this muck.

Yes, but this is the Angels. We don’t do the rational thing.

In my off season piece I’m trading Adell for an infielder because no other scenario is realistic.

It’s a bit shocking how much Adell’s value has fallen on the sim, despite a career year for him. I’m sure his arbitration salary bumping up to 5-6 mil is a part of that, as his low OBP.

For most clubs, having depth at a position is a strength to trade from. With the Angels, having depth at a position means force-fitting those players into the lineup by playing them at positions where they are destined to fail.

See, that’s the thing. His answer to the Will We Compete questions is ACTUALLY HONEST. He basically said he’s not gonna make any promises given that long ass list he just laid out but he’ll try to at least make the shitshow as good as he can get it and hopefully make it entertaining.

He was fairly strait up there…. yet no one is clapping.

Perry Minasian sat in front of a small group of reporters Saturday – which in itself answered one of the questions of the winter – and said all the other issues take a back seat to finding a new manager.

“This is a huge hire,” the Angels’ general manager said. “I realize it. We need to nail it. We can’t miss.”

…and “El Hombre Malo” is even a candidate for the managerial position?

No Perry, I don’t think you realize the importance of any of your responsibilities.

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 And this is just more proof after taking a relief pitcher as a 2 nd round pick in the draft. There is a not very fine line between cutting edge pick and being an idiot, in fact, in this case it was more of a chasm, and he kept right over it, defying all laws of gravity and common sense.

Hiring a field manager is “huge” …..😂😂😂😂. Completely hilarious if it was not so sad. How about getting the draft “right”? How about getting the farm system “right”. How about getting your scouting and player development “right”.

In the great scheme of things it matters little who ends up being the field manager.

Perry and the idiots above him in the Org are looking for a field manager who can show the world their clown show way of running a baseball Organization was justified. Yes – all will be fixed with the right field manager. 😂😂😂😢😢😢

What manager can win with your pathetic 26 man, Minasian.

In point of fact, your managerial pick is irrelevant because you are such a crappy GM.

See. THIS is why I’m fine with the platypus being released into the wild. I understand that the owner pretty much insures that the team will make bad decisions and suck. OK. Bummer.

I’d be happy with the GM if he took his perhaps tiny FO and scouting budget and did what he CAN do very well. Can you only afford three scouts? OK, get three REALLY GOOD scouts. Can you only afford to cover three areas of the country? OK, pick three winners and find THE BEST prospects you can. He’s actually kind of done that in Latin America lately, for example. Can’t afford the best coaches for development at five MiLB stops? Then get the best you can possibly get at A Ball and AA and really work the kids over there so we see them on cruise control at A+ and AAA. Etc Etc. Can’t afford good FAs? Get a couple good pro scouts that have been fired from other teams and find yourself a couple Muncies.

I know a GM will fail at some of that stuff to cause it’s really hard. But PTP just hasn’t pulled off enough of this stuff. If he were a pitcher with a shit ERA and win loss record he’d still look like crap when you look at WHIP/FIP too.

I was never, and never will be, one of those purple dick idiots who wants a GM fired after two years. But he’s had time to get the stuff he can control going well, and I DO think there are GMs that can get that stuff right even with CArtePinKuhl blowing the big picture all the time. PTP’s just not doing it.

That is where I have landed as well. I agree Perry has not performed well enough to keep his job despite obvious budgetary and resource limitations.

Does anyone here actually think PERRY decided to get rid of Wash and then PERRY decided not to go look for a real manager and said to himself “You know who’d be great? Albert Pujols….”?

Oh, yeah. This is a site full of guys who actually believe in, and are angry about, Perry walking the empty terraces of the Big A the last week of July, watching the sun peak over the walls, and musing to himself that this team and fanbase deserve the chance to GO FOR IT and play meaningful baseball in September. Then he gave his head a firm nod, cracked a determined smile, and traded for Chafin and Garcia. The plan all along.

So yeah. Someone here believes it. Probably a bunch of someones. Or they believe in the god with no image. The GM/POBO/VPOPA that isn’t a pawn of the owners.

Stay angry my friends. It will only kill you faster.

I fully understand your point, but I don’t think Perry is anywhere near as capable as you give him credit for and I wouldn’t hire him to mow my lawn. I understand he’s a total sell out, but he’s harming himself tremendously by what he’s doing. And I’m not even angry because he just a pathetic loser.

Where is the part of that comment that says Perry is capable? He can suck and we can be totally full of shit to “angry white lady on Insta” levels at the same time.

I’m going to do my 2026 season prediction far, far earlier than I normally would do, even before the winter meetings and any free agent signings …… yes ….. 72 to 76 wins, still under .500 and still not sniffing the playoffs and playing “meaningful baseball” in September. Yes, shocking and I really went out on a limb for this one. There is not enough money in this weak FA market to fix this mess that the lame duck GM has created.
