Elder Statesmen Beat Astros 4-3

Kyle Hendricks may have toed the mound for the final time in his career tonight. Earlier this week reports surfaced that he was retiring. Yesterday he stated that decision had not yet been made.

But, boy did tonight look and feel like a swan song. Overall it was a pretty typical outing for Hendricks, who went 5 innings giving up 3 runs. He did look like his old self for a while, though.

Kyle left after 5 complete innings and received hugs from teammates and coaches. The Orange County native only spent one year with the Angels, but clearly made deep bonds with his teammates. At the time he was pulled, Hendricks was on the hook for a loss with the Angels trailing 3-1.

That 1 came courtesy of Mike Trout’s 402nd career home run.

The Angels managed to score runs without the ball leaving the yard as well. Denzer Guzman was involved in both cases. First the young shortstop doubled in Christian Moore in the bottom of the 5th. Then he scored on a 2 out pinch hit single by Chris Taylor 7th.

Meanwhile, the Angels bullpen held the Astros off the board. So when Guzman touched home the game was tied at 3-3 and Hendricks avoided the loss.

Mike Trout wanted to make sure the Angels won. He cracked another homer in the bottom of the 8th inning to put the Angels ahead 4-3. This was an opposite field rocket reminiscent of his early career and it went several rows into the crowd.

In a season that has been so much about the kids, tonight was one for the graybeards. Kyle Hendricks started it. Mike Trout provided the offense. Kenley Jansen was brought in to get the save. And as he has all season, Jansen delivered.

The Astros loss kept them 1 game back of the Detroit Tigers for the final Wild Card spot. Both Detroit and Cleveland lost tonight, so the AL playoff mix is still very much in flux heading to the final two days of the regular season.

Jahmai Jones delivered the clinching RBI that just sent the Tigers to the playoffs.

159 wRC+ this season.

Now go Guardians, and deliver that final blow to keep Houston out of the postseason!

Looking at the prediction thread…

Closest / Could Still Be Right:

Jeff Joiner, PedroCerrano, frosse → 73–89 (if Angels split)Brent (myself) → 74–88 (if Angels win both)ErSTAN → 72–90 (if Angels lose both)
So crazy how one of us will have nailed it.

MVP wise, here’s the “closest”?
John Henry Weitzel did well with naming Jo Adell as MVP candidate — Adell is among the top power producers.Jeff Joiner nailed the Jose Soriano pick for best pitcher.Jessica got the pitching side right but overestimated Trout’s availability.

interesting stat…well I think it’s interesting. Run differential is -155. Last year when we went 63-99 the run differential was -162 so it’s pretty much a repeat except we had a little, tiny bit more fun this season.

Bring back Wash now. It’s looking bad, the waiting. And wtf is Ray saying about next year? Perry’s not talking to Wash? So he wants to talk to Arte. And he’ll manage elsewhere if not here.

the latest from The Athletic

Ron Washington wants a conversation with Angels owner Arte Moreno, says he can still manageBy NYT Sammy

Sept. 27, 2025 4:00 am MST
ANAHEIM, Calif. — Standing at second base with a fungo bat in hand, Ron Washington was in a familiar spot — a spot he hopes to be in for years to come: in uniform, overseeing a team he’d like to manage again.
This was Friday afternoon before the Los Angeles Angels’ final series of the season. With just days to go in another lost year, the organization has yet to decide who will manage next year.
Washington, 73, is coming off quadruple bypass heart surgery earlier this summer. He said he’s healthy, improving and, most importantly, wants to push for his job once again.
“I was hoping I’d get to see (Angels owner Arte Moreno) this homestead, but he hasn’t made it here yet to the game,” Washington told The Athletic. “I just want to sit down and talk baseball with him. I’ll let them decide if I’m the guy to lead the club.”
If Moreno doesn’t make it to an Angels game before the season’s end, Washington said he’ll set up a call with the elusive owner. He hasn’t talked with general manager Perry Minasian about his managerial future despite his being around the team in Milwaukee and Colorado and now for the final homestand.
Much about the future of the Angels’ leadership remains in flux, with the coming days potentially serving as an inflection point for major change. Minasian remains on contract for another season, and it’s possible five years without improvement could lead to a change.
Interim manager Ray Montgomery expressed similar uncertainty about his future Thursday. He, too, is a candidate to manage the team next year. With the looming lockout, the Angels’ frugal owner might not want to hire a manager on a multiyear contract.
That could also apply to Washington, who has a one-year option on his contract. He’s in the middle of this awkward situation — physically present but without a role.
“My health is very important,” Washington said. “But I don’t think my health is going to have anything to do with me getting back. I’ll be fully ready to get back. I have no doubt about that. It’s just a matter of Perry and the owner making a decision.”
Health, however, will be a key factor in how the Angels evaluate this decision. He’s an elderly man, just months removed from heart surgery. Placing him in an extremely high-stress position might not be in his own best interest or the team’s.
Then there’s the Angels’ feeble record. Perhaps the on-field failures push Moreno to make sweeping changes that take the organization in a new direction.
Ron Washington is not interested in a front-office type of role. “I’m a hands-on guy,” he said. “And that’s not gonna stop.” (G Fiume / Getty Images)
But there is one other key consideration. The Angels performed better earlier this year under Washington’s guidance, before his season ended in mid-June. And Moreno — who visited Washington in the hospital and followed up with a phone call — might feel inclined to bring back his handpicked skipper.
“I’m gonna be in an organization,” Washington said. “So if I’m not managing here, I’m not saying I’m gonna be managing somewhere else, but I’m gonna be in someone’s organization.”
He made it clear he’s not interested in a front-office, advisor type of role, saying: “I’m a hands-on guy. And that’s not gonna stop. I’m the one that’s gonna decide when I’m not hands-on.”
Washington said he expects his rehab to be completed in December and that he’s been doing 30 minutes of cardiovascular work a day. He acknowledged the challenges of maintaining a healthy diet but said he hasn’t smoked a cigarette since his surgery.
The Angels don’t have the luxury of time to wait out Washington’s recovery process. They’ll need to make a decision on picking up his option by November, and they would probably prefer a clear direction before that.
For much of the early part of the season, there were signs of this whole thing turning under Washington. The young players were performing, and they were at least in the competitive mix for several months.
But the bottom has fallen out yet again. And now, the tone and tenor of their circumstances can best be described as angsty. That upward trajectory that defined much of this year has been replaced by doubt, with rampant speculation about big changes coming.
“We’re close to figuring it out,” Washington said. “And I know I can help get them over the hump. What happened to me shouldn’t stop me from helping them get over the hump. I’m gonna be recovered.”
“But,” he added, “the decision is not mine

Pretty amazing that Wash in showing up at the stadium hoping the owner will show and he has not talked to the GM. The Angels might be moving on but they owe Wash a conversation, not making hope that he runs into Arte.

NOOOOOOO!!!!! Every season Washington has managed here, the team has managed to have a worse record then they even did under Nevin. I don’t get the adoration of Ron Washington as a manager. The results have sucked, And I’m not buying the “Yeah but, injuries, dog ate my homework”, garbage excuses. I don’t care if the players like him, I care about results.

We owe nothing to Washington. We brought him out of oblivion as an old man and can send him right back there with some more cash that he wasn’t expecting.. This team needs young energy..

Great write up, Jeff. Even though our team sucked again this year, it always makes me sad when the season comes to an end. I do not watch the endless rounds of playoffs unless our team is in them. I remember the days when the winners of the AL and NL faced off. Two teams. One winner. That was very cool.

Nevertheless, i enjoyed last night’s win. It reminds me what our team could be but isn’t. I thought we dealt a death blow to the Asstros but hoping it happens today or tomorrow.

If Denzer works out, where do we stick him? We’ve got a pretty good SS already.

That was a satisfying victory over the Astros!
FWIW, Trout raised his WAR from 1.1 to 1.3 with his 2 solo HR

Trout now has 403 homers.
Duke Snider is next with 407.

2 games left. Trout is heating up.
Could tie Snider by season’s end.

Nice win tonight. Let’s be greedy and get two more.

Recently read a piece on the team site where Trout was saying that he’s recently made an adjustment that he believes will solve the hitting problems. Denied it was a vision issue, etc. I realize that athletes saying these types of things is common – and it’s typically just wish casting but, let’s hope it’s at least partially true in this case.

Either way, tonight was nice.
