Kyle Hendricks may have toed the mound for the final time in his career tonight. Earlier this week reports surfaced that he was retiring. Yesterday he stated that decision had not yet been made.
But, boy did tonight look and feel like a swan song. Overall it was a pretty typical outing for Hendricks, who went 5 innings giving up 3 runs. He did look like his old self for a while, though.
Kyle left after 5 complete innings and received hugs from teammates and coaches. The Orange County native only spent one year with the Angels, but clearly made deep bonds with his teammates. At the time he was pulled, Hendricks was on the hook for a loss with the Angels trailing 3-1.
That 1 came courtesy of Mike Trout’s 402nd career home run.
The Angels managed to score runs without the ball leaving the yard as well. Denzer Guzman was involved in both cases. First the young shortstop doubled in Christian Moore in the bottom of the 5th. Then he scored on a 2 out pinch hit single by Chris Taylor 7th.
Meanwhile, the Angels bullpen held the Astros off the board. So when Guzman touched home the game was tied at 3-3 and Hendricks avoided the loss.
Mike Trout wanted to make sure the Angels won. He cracked another homer in the bottom of the 8th inning to put the Angels ahead 4-3. This was an opposite field rocket reminiscent of his early career and it went several rows into the crowd.
In a season that has been so much about the kids, tonight was one for the graybeards. Kyle Hendricks started it. Mike Trout provided the offense. Kenley Jansen was brought in to get the save. And as he has all season, Jansen delivered.
The Astros loss kept them 1 game back of the Detroit Tigers for the final Wild Card spot. Both Detroit and Cleveland lost tonight, so the AL playoff mix is still very much in flux heading to the final two days of the regular season.
