Angels at Mariners Game 3 Gamethread

I’ll have one TV on this while the rest on on Canelo vs. Crawford. I’m a huge Crawford fan. Seen him fight live 3 times.

Will he be selling peanuts at the stadium? After 2005, he was a miserable manager.

Elimination # is now 2.

This could be the day of the very last meaningful game.

Team is so bad and the game was so bad, nobody even bothered to write up a port mortem, I mean post game write up. Well, the team is tied for last with the A’s , should be able to clinch last place by the end of the week. Remember : They are going to play meaningless-ful games in September!!!

Jeff – The Crawford/Canelo fight went EXACTLY as I expected. Bud perfectly blended his approach by upsetting Canelo’s timing with 2-3 piece quick combos which caused Canelo to methodically “reset” and he would then at times hold his ground and exchange and he would of course circle away when needed. Great fight plan by a much better boxer. Still, very predicable IMO.

Full disclosure, I’ve never been a Canelo fan anyway. Mostly because Triple GGG beat him in their 1st fight (and probably their 2nd as well) and I’ve been salty about it ever since. The co-main was awful and the card pacing was terrible and geez, how f’ing long were the introductory songs for the main event?

All that being said, did you catch the UFC main event? Lopes vs. Silva? OMFG. A beautiful symphony of violence. If you haven’t, make sure you watch it.

After watching both, I know which sport I like more and I came up as huge boxing guy.

16 Ks for The Angels mighty offense. I wonder if they can top that with 17 tomorrow?

I had dinner at a friend’s house. We get the Seattle radio broadcast here so we listened to that. The Mariners announcer sure was excited by all the Woo strikeouts, to the point where it was obvious he didn’t know the Angels do this regularly. Strikeout, that is.

On that 2 run single in the 5th, it became obvious as the at-bat progressed that it would end the way it did. It had to.

How is it not obvious to Arte that Perry is a horrible gm. Seems like every year the Angels have only a few injuries and their lineup turns into a bunch of guys that shouldn’t be anywhere near any teams 26 man active roster. He provides no depth. Sure it’s not all his fault because Arte won’t pay more for scouting or development but man you’d think once in awhile we’d get a player and see him be a success for awhile.

I’ve been saying this for a long time. Five years is long enough. Of course, nothing will truly change until Arturo is gone.

I am not going to argue with your central premise but I do have to challenge a couple of your statements.

1. Angels have had only a few injuries over the seasons while Perry has been GM.

No offense intended but are you kidding me? The Angels roster has been decimated by injuries to the offense and pitching staff season after season. Season ending injuries to Trout, Rendon, Ohtani, Joyce, Neto, O’Hoppe and soooo many others. This season (2025) is the first in about 6 that one could say the team has stayed relatively healthy.

2. The Angels have had no productive free agent signings under Perry.

While I agree the track record on Free Agents under Perry has been questionable at best, one does not need to look past Kikuchi to see that it hasn’t been all bad. Also Moncada is having a 1 WAR season which is decent value for the $5m he cost.

I believe Perry has faced significant head winds from the top of the Org making his difficult job way more challenging.

I agree that Arte Arte’s ownership tenure has been a failure when measured to wins and losses. However he pays over $200m annually just on player salaries. At what point does it become the GMs responsibility to win with the budget available? Other than maybe Steve Cohen, what owner of a professional sports team just tells the GM to spend “without restriction” to win?

There are teams winning with a fraction of the money that Arte provides the GM. I believe that Perry is fully responsible for the construction of the ML roster and the talent (or lack thereof) in the farm system. If he can’t build a viable contender with over $200m to spend, he should find another career to pursue.

Understood and can generally agree but it is balanced by $80m in payments each year to two unproductive players (Trout and Rendon) whose contracts he inherited.

That $200m budget is a bit deceiving under the circumstances. Perry generally has around $35m per year to spend and that is not a lot in MLB.

This is a sound point. To a lesser extent, the team was also hamstrung by Pujols’ contract for many years. You can’t blame it ALL on misbegotten marquee contracts, but they’ve definitely played a major role in the Angels’ anemic decade.

They are still paying Pujols his “personal services” money.

What’s even more horrific is s number of these players will return 2026.
The ones who won’t will be replaced by Michael Conforto, DJ LaMahieu, and Nick Castellanos.
More Ks. More losses.
