Angels Beat Astros Late 4-1

If you looked at the records and ERA’s of tonight’s starting pitchers you probably would have expected a high scoring game. So naturally, the game was tied at 1-1 heading to the 9th inning.

Kyle Hendricks was his normal wiley self. He mixed pitch speeds and locations without lighting up the radar gun. He spun 6 frames of 1 run baseball and gave the Angels a chance to win the game.

The old man was spotted a 1-0 lead in the top of the 3rd inning thanks to a monster shot by Zach Neto. This one bounced off the railroad tracks behind the left field seats.

Hendricks promptly gave that run back in the bottom of the 3rd but limited the damage from that point. His final line was 6 innings, 1 earned run, 2 K’s, and no walks. In short, it was as good of a start as you can expect from Hendricks.

Reid Detmers pitched a scoreless 7th inning after Hendricks was pulled from the game. Jose Fermin blanked the side in the 8th.

With 1 out in the top of the 9th, Luis Rengifo singled. Next up, Logan O’Hoppe singled. Next man up Matthew Lugo singled but Luis Rengifo got a horrible jump from 2nd base and did not score.

That brought up trade acquisition Oswald Peraza with the bases loaded and 1 out. The kid roped a long fly ball to the right field corner that looked like a perfect sacrifice fly, but it tailed away from Cam Smith and smacked off the wall for a 2 run double.

A strikeout by Neto was followed by walks to Moncada and Trout to push in another Angels run and push the lead to 4-1. Ultimately Taylor Ward struck out to end the inning.

The K continues to be a problem for the Angels and they added 14 to their league leading total tonight. Hat tip to Luis Rengifo, who was the only Angel to play the full game without striking out.

Kenley Jansen worked around a leadoff walk and pitched a scoreless bottom of the 9th to secure the win. He was aided by a tremendous play by Jo Adell to get the last out.

Biggest O’Hoppe fan but this year I’ve changed course. He continues chasing.

Seems like early success went to his head and if he is not producing, would be wise to play a better defender to help the pitching staff. Sounds like the Halos have a couple down on the farm but let them progress, sign a cost friendly bridge catcher until these guys are ready and have Logan start at SLC.

Peraza drove in the game winning run? I’m not sure if this is a sign of the apocalypse or an improbable winning streak.

Just another lead in to a buttercup.

I think we should play him along with Moore to see what we’ve got. No more Rengifo other than pinch hitter/injury replacement.

Peraza does not have anything but on board with benching Rengifo.

Sam Aldegheri pitched his best outing of the season tonight – 8 innings of scoreless ball on 101 pitches, no walks, 6 Ks.

It’s been an inconsistent year for Aldegheri, but he’s been turning it on in the second half, and has gone seven innings or better in three of his five outings in August, with a very solid .211 average against this month.

Probably. Whether fourth or sixth depends on the week.

We have a metric-shit-ton of those throughout the ML roster and farm system…..

Yeah, I’m waiting for the No.1 or No. 2 quality pitching prospect. This Italian kid ain’t one of them. Nor Klassen or Dana.

Fwiw, I’m not sure that the Angels do. The Angels have a metric-shit-ton of relievers that the FO is trying to repurpose as any type of conceivable starter.

But Aldegheri is one of the few in the system above low A that – durability and repertoire – actually looks the part of a backend starter. Maybe Farris.

But Klassen, Urena, Cortez, Gordon – these are relievers trying to reinvent themselves to inconsistent and often disappointing effect. Johnson and Hurtado are on the edge, showing more control than the former group, but their durability this season calls into question whether they can ever take on a starter’s workload for even 3-4 months at a stretch. Dana and Koch don’t currently meet the quality bar for backend starter.

What was thought to be an emergent strength end of last season has come crashing down to reality, and it’s really down to the pitching lab now to reorient the picture. The last draft feels like a candid confession that the FO is just really bad at stock picking when it comes to collegiate arms, so they’re acknowledging that they need to create them from within. Dana and Koch are examples of accelerated success with that strategy, but while they can get them to AAA, they haven’t quite succeeded in getting them over the last hurdle.

Shoutout to Aldegheri, man. He’s been a bright spot in a rough year for our AAA + AA starting pitchers.

Peyton Olejnik had a solid outing too, albeit down in Low A.

7 IP, 1 ER, 7 hits, 1 walk, 7 strikeouts.

Olejnik is an interesting arm – I agree with TBW on that. But he also has a long improbable road as a 6’11” late bloomer. He turns 23 this winter and is essentially still learning to pitch with those ridiculously long levera in low-A. One hopes for acceleration, but there are just not a lot of case studies of guys this tall figuring it all out in their mid-20s. But watching him try is what makes it interesting, whatever the outcome.

Re-sign Hendricks already, if he’d take the same pay. Old and fastball is puss, but he pitches smart. So many starts not great, but he kept us in the game. And he grew up a fan and wants to be in Anaheim. We won’t be a good team next year anyways.

For the 2.5M a year he’s making, not a bad idea. Always rooting for this guy.

Pound of pound, best FA acquisition over the past 5 years. I was on board when the signing happened, Kikuchi as well. With Hendricks, veteran, stays even keel and can go 9-innings if forced to. Hell, he was the opening pitcher 2014 Game 7 WS for the Cubs who had the Curse of the Billy Goat on his shoulders that night. Local guy to boot. Watch the Dodgers snag him.

If we can get two FA pitchers who could be better over a whole season than Hendricks we have to sign them. He can come back as pitching coach.

Agreed. He’s an ideal low maintenance 5th starter.

Soriano
Kikuchi
Detmers
[ TBD ]
Hendricks

I’d also look to bring back Moncada and plug him in at 3rd for another season.

When his pitches are moving he reminds me of Greg Maddux towards the end of his career.

we’ve equaled 2024 with 27 games left. But these hitters….a lot of .228 hitters including our “big guns”
