The Angels wasted no time putting up runs in the first inning against the Orioles, Mike Trout reminded everyone he’s still that guy, launching a 402-foot homer to left to give the Halos an early 2-0 lead. Zach Neto scored after singling earlier in the inning while Taylor Ward added a base hit of his own before Jo Adell chipped in with a single to right.
Tomoyuki Sugano had a rough welcome, surrendering three hits and two runs before recording the second out.
After briefly cutting the lead to 2-1 in the first, the Orioles surged ahead in the third inning. Jackson Holliday doubled, Henderson tied with an RBI single and Rutschman legged out an infield hit that brought in another run. A wild pitch and some small ball later, Baltimore jumped ahead 3-2.
Taylor Ward continued his strong day at the plate, ripping a double to left in the top of the fifth that brought home Zach Neto and tied the game at 3-3.
Just as things had settled, the Orioles struck again. Cedric Mullins launched a two run homer to center, followed immediately by a solo shot from Gary Sanchez. 6-3 Baltimore.
Luis Rengifo tried to answer with a solo homer of his own in the top half of the inning, trimming it to 6-4 and then followed it up with a 419-foot homer to right-center in the eighth inning to bring the Angels within one. Unfortunately, the rest of the inning fizzled out, leaving the tying run stranded.
With Trout and Rengifo powering the offense, the Halo’s showed plenty of fight. But Baltimore’s sixth-inning surge held up, and the Angels couldn’t cash in late. They’ll look to bounce back in Game 6 tomorrow. 6-5 Orioles.
